I've had treatment resistant major depressive disorder for a very long time. I also suffer from insomnia. Ice baths have made a huge difference in my mood and sleep. It's not a silver bullet, but anything that can help you feel better about yourself, more self control, confidence and better sleep is huge. It's a weird thing. I have to talk myself into doing it every time. I don't enjoy the build up, or the bath itself, but I sure feel so much better afterwards.

For those who also haven't heard of brown fat:
"Brown fat breaks down blood sugar (glucose) and fat molecules to create heat and help maintain body temperature. Cold temperatures activate brown fat, which leads to various metabolic changes in the body. Most of our fat, however, is white fat, which stores extra energy. Too much white fat builds up in obesity." National Institute of Health

After 30 minutes my leg was useless until it warmed back up but, I definitely did not feel the cold weather as much while playing.

It worked for me, I didn't get into an ice bath, but for August to December of 2021 and part of January 2022, I was without gas because I couldn't afford the bill. So I went without hot water during those months, I started out with 5 minute cold showers 4-5 times a week, after a month I was taking 25 minute cold showers 4-5 times a week. I felt energized after each shower, and I kick started my fat loss combined with 3-4 workouts (progressive weight lifting) at 1 hour a session, I went from 278 lbs. to 232 and kept it off most of 2022.

No one is talking about the benefits of hot cold cycling! Hot as you can stand shower for 2 minutes then cold as possible water for 2 minutes then back to heat and then cold again. The 2nd 2 cycles are easy. The heat forces the blood to the skin surface and the cold forces blood back into the core. This back and forth movement really helps heal diseases and helps recovery after hard workouts. It may not be the right thing to do after an injury! But it’s great for systemic sickness such as cold or flu etc.

I've started with cold showers this summer. The coolest water that I had was 25 deg Celsius. It was damn cold freezing temperature for me. A couple of months later, now I'm showering with 10 deg Celsius and I'm pretty comfortable when I'm doing it. Start With something that you could tolerate for a week, and start gradually to lower the temperature in the further seasons. And you will see that you can do this. 😉 And relax when you are doing it. After the sessions look into the mirror and smile to yourself. It helps

@@quasa0 so as I’ve gotten older I’ve started to develop ptsd from some car accidents and it opened up a worm hole of emotions where I stated to dwell on my past when I was younger out in the streets messing around with drugs and gangs. I’m clean now but just remembering those crazy times in my life would lead me into a a massive panic attack. Sometimes I would feel on edge for days at a time. I couldn’t turn it off. No matter what I would do. I tried everything from group therapy, to mens groups about anxiety, therapist, counselors, doctors. It even started messing with my appetite. Then covid hit and everything just got worse. I’ve always been a very social person. I never had problems making friends or talking to women. Covid opened up another can of worms for me and all of sudden I have social anxiety now to. I remember my buddy had a lil kickback at his new apt and when more people started showing up that I didn’t know. A huge panic attack came on and I thought it was a heart attack man it was so damn scary. My heart rate was like 150 and I was sitting down not moving at all. I had to leave I didn’t even tell anyone I just texted my buddy like hey man I had to go something came up.
Anyway sorry for the long comment but one day at a therapist appt. She taught me some breathing techniques to help me slow my heart down when a panic attack happened. It helped when the panic attacks where small but it did nothing to the big ones. But I started doing more research into it cause i knew I was on to something now that I knew I could do something to help the small ones. That’s when I came across wim hof! Downloaded his app he has and I couldn’t believe how well his breathing techniques have helped me. I’m able to interact socially again with other people. I can go out feeling more confident now that I have something to defend myself from these massive panic attacks. Just knowing that simple fact as helped me so much that I rarely get panic attacks anymore! And when I do get one, which still happens on occasion, I immediately do 3-4 rounds of his breathing techniques and it almost goes away instantly.
I highly recommend this for everybody! What’s even crazier is I’m a smoker 🚬 (yeah I know I need to quit 🤮 trying to!) and the first time I tried his technique. I was gasping for air after like 30 seconds of holding my breath lol 🤦‍♂️ after 3 days of doing 3-5 rounds in the morning and night. I could my breathe 🧘‍♂️ for up to 3 minutes!
I definitely suggest doing beginner rounds first so you can get used to it. Wim hof has some UA-cam videos where you can follow along. But I suggest downloading the app! It’s an amazing application.
Again sorry for the long comment lol! Much love!

I just finished eight months of chemo, 25 radiation, 4 surgeries all in the past nine months. and now immunotherapy . My body felt totally destroyed. I started taking ice showers. We're on well water and the ground is frozen so we truly have extremely cold water. Now I can handle it longer and longer. I can't believe the difference. I have much less joint pain, more energy and far less depression. I had terrible sciatica from the radiation and chemo and it's almost all gone since ice showers. I tried an ice bath but I'm not quite there yet. That really was hard and something I need to work up to . However, I have one of these same black tubs in my backyard. I'm going to scrub and bleach it all out and see if I can use it for an ice bath at some point

I’ve done ice baths for years. Especially after hard training while military. Just recently bought an actual ice tub for the back porch. Been working up in time and I feel after about 2-3 min it’s easy to stay in. For recovery there is literally nothing as good, as far as I know. I can barely be walking from training and take an ice bath and feel like I haven’t done anything hard the next day. It’s insane.
