I never get tired of watching you make handles for tools. There is something so simple and spiritual about it. I'm not there yet, but thanks to you I have re-hung an old hammer I got from my father on a store-bought handle. At least I was able to hand pick the grain orientation, and it felt good to put an old tool that predates me back into service. Thanks.
Got my axeroon last week. Mounted it on a sledgehammer handle, cut down to 30 inch. What a fantastic tool. Makes hand splitting a breeze. No more bending over to retrieve splits, and the axe is spot on for cutting fibers that don't quite split entirely. I have done a couple of cords of eucalypt hardwood so far, and wouldn't be with out it. Great tool.
Cody...Brother, of course we'd love to see the axe-a-roon in use. :) And, I've got to tell you, Brother, that you my friend, ROCK! Thanks so much!!! I've been watching you and Fresh P for a while...and forgive me for not being articulate enough...but y'all are the kind of neighbors we'd all love to have...and the kind of friends we try to be, but it seems to come so easily to you. It's people like y'all that make life a beautiful experience. Brother Cody, you and yours are welcome at my fire anytime!!! May you continue to be blessed!!! -tom
Cody, please continue to point out "amateur" tips like the fence for the saw. These are jewels of info for people like myself who are not very familiar with tools and their proper or improper use. An example is when you showed how to use the speed square as a quick fence. I use it all the time. Keep them coming.
Nice looking Axearoon! More tool and handle videos please! My favourites are the tools you completely make from scratch. From scrap metal to custom handle
I love seeing the way you care for your tools! I am currently growing my collection, it is full of my grandfathers, great grandfathers, and my wifes grandfathers tools! There is nothing like using at tool that has so much history and tradition behind it! Keep up the good work!
Looking good. I really enjoy seeing you in the wood shop. It is nice to see what you can get out of a block of wood. Yes, I would like to see the axearoon in action. Thanks for the videos, they are truly enjoyable.
DEFINITELY want to see it in use please. These are by far my favourite sorts of your videos. Both a pleasure to watch and incredibly informative for me.
I definitely want to see the axe-aroon at work. The shape and size of your roughed up handle reminded me of the old movie "Walking Tall". Funny what comes back to mind after so many years. At any rate, thank you much for your videos. All the best.
absolutely I would love to see it in use. I have my grandpa's old pickaroon and it is very handy to use. I would like to see what kind of chopping it can do as well as how well the pick works because it looks different than mine.
It looks excellent there cody. I make knives and other hand blades, so I can definitely understand not having a perfect handle, but that's the sort of ruggedness that gives something custom character (as long as it's not too out there). All the best.
I had hoped to see your lathe being used for shaping the middle of the handle, producing a pickeroon similar to your sthil. Looks like the oval profile will work out much better though in the end, well done.
Of course let's see the tool employed - it doesn't have to be a separate video. Just a mention in a video of it being used while engaged in another task....Thanks
Did you use the new time-lapse feature? It seemed that way at around 1:39 I have been trying out the new iPhone time lapse feature, but I stick with the app 'hyperlapse' which is really nice
I love the tool videos, keep them coming. If I cannot get hold of Hickery, what other wood could I use? I am based in the U.K. and our choice of wood is limited.
tartredarrow I've never noticed the difference between types of Birch. That said, I don't know to a certainty what kinds of birch are in my area, nor do I keep track what kind I use for different projects.
Oak can work, white more than red but it's more on the brittle side. Good quality maple will work, they floor bowling alleys with the stuff so it's very shock resistant.
looking at some old ax heads we had laying around Pa found one that has a shorter spike than the pickaroon with a long tapered cutting edge. the cutting edge like the sager chemical rounded but even more so. any ideas what this was used for? estimated to be 100 years old or better
A traditional curved palm swell facing the same direction as the Pickeroon at the end of the handle and a palm swell facing the opposite direction halfway down the handle. If you're having a hard time imagining what I'm describing here, you can message me and I will send you a sketch. It should absolutely be made of Hickory.
Do you ever burn fit heads/handles? Heat the metal with a torch and force it down onto roughly shape wood to make a perfect fit? I've seen blacksmiths use that technique before.
Cody, it would be interesting to see how this one compares to the other pickaroons you have. The tool videos are fun to watch and I'm sure give your viewers ideas of what to make and what to look for when they are out and about at yard sales and such

After all that work I know we are all looking forward to seeing a 5 minute clip of the Axearoon in use. Thank you for all your work.

I'd love to see a video of you using this tool. I would like to see just how useful it has turned out to be. Thanks for sharing :)
Really reminds me of a dolabra. I'd love to see you get a hold of one and compare the two. Love the videos, sirs. Thank you.
I had hoped to see your lathe being used for shaping the middle of the handle, producing a pickeroon similar to your sthil. Looks like the oval profile will work out much better though in the end, well done.

If I cannot get hold of Hickery, what other wood could I use? I am based in the U.K. and our choice of wood is limited.
I suggest ash or elm if hickory isn't available.
Birch.
tartredarrow
I've never noticed the difference between types of Birch. That said, I don't know to a certainty what kinds of birch are in my area, nor do I keep track what kind I use for different projects.

Yes it´s good. In germany we call it "Wiedehopfhacke" (hoopoe pickax xD) to cut the roots from a treestump or plants new trees.
Nice work!

Any word on the plans for the ax handle you got from your trip to the forestry museum Cody?

PongoXBongo too much risk of ruining the temper. Knifemakers use that technique for hidden tang knives.
Of course we'd like to see it in use :D
Great videos buddy

Make the palm swell round like a bell. Instead of a fawns foot.
great video. Actually I was hoping to see the design in use. To see if theory met usefulness.
Great quote by Michelangelo.
could you sharpen up the spike on a firefighters axe and use that?
well you can but the tip might brake but you can try :)
