Thanks for the video. I share Kevin Gray's affection for classical music. Chabrier: Espana - Ansermet with the Suisse Romande Orchestra, London/ Decca (1965). That was the classical album Kevin was holding up. The other "Espana" he was referring to, I think, was Espana - Agenta with the LSO, Decca/London {1958). Ironically, Analogue Productions released the LSO version a few years ago, on Vinyl and SACD. I have the SACD version. The front booklet features the original Decca artwork. If you flip over the front booklet, it features the orignal London label version, which has different illustrated artwork, that Kevin was suggesting. For anyone who cares about this stuff, besides me.

Please ask him about his time at DCC! Always wanted more info about that time period, he mastered legendary albums for that label such as Madman Across the Water, Van Halen S/T, A Night at the Opera, Hotel California, and the Doors S/T. All of which are CRAZY expensive. Mainly want to hear stories about how he got to handle and cut them, their conditions (especially since the DCC Doors is the final AAA pressing that used the original master tape), and his favorite experience there
I'm with Kevin on hot stampers. Some records sound better than others but there is such a multitude of factors that contribute to that. I'm guessing most hot stampers are just records in really good condition.
It has nothing to do with the condition of the records, in fact some even have issues as they are used records. Tom Port does shootouts (in depth listening) with lots of records of the same title and picks the ones that sound better than the average LP. No two copies of a record sound the same.
@@anton88ist So not only will you be paying an inflated price but you could be buying a noisy record based on one man's opinion? Whatever floats your boat.
@@adamhunt4462 That is correct. But that noisy record (usually) sounds better than the rest. Try it for yourself, there is a 30 day Money back guarantee. Then you will really know whether it is worth it or not.
Kevin Gray has excellent taste in jazz. 'The Blues and the Abstract Truth' by Oliver Nelson is my favourite jazz album too. My preferred sleeve is the other sleeve though.

@@michaeltrochalakis6526 Yeah, I have a nice, pristine japanese pressing of that album, but it does sound a tad thin. I wonder what these new remasters by kevin Gray would sound like...? If anyone has heard them, I would love to hear your opinion. I wonder where you can get the damn things?

Yes the 1940s monk BN recordings were released in 1956 on 2 LPs as “Genius of Modern Music Vol 1/Vol 2” after Rudy made those tape compilations from the acetates. Before that most of the songs were put out as 10 inches with 8 songs each in 1951.
If you interview Kevin again I'd love to know if the Martin Denny reissues that Jackpot did are AAA.
Although by the standards of prestige (major artists, sales) it was one of Kevin's more minor projects, his cut of Sparklehorse's "It's A Wonderful Life" is one of my most treasured records. Not least, when Capitol - I guess, not much interested in the vinyl format in 2001 - licensed the LP release to a small label (Devil In The Woods), not many can have been pressed or sold.
The running time is over 67 minutes, Kevin cut it DMM to a single disc. Taking on-board Kevin's own methodology: it's in my top 5 favourite records on the grounds of being beautiful musically and sonically. Lovely gatefold jacket, too.
I’ve got the HOLLAND BC13 set so I’ve always been glad to hear that the DUTCH BB is the best. I got one in 2016 for $100 mint
Truth be told though: they combined whatever pressings they had available back then. So sometimes also Swedish pressings next to Dutch etc. Quality was/is fine.
Mofi records from the master to DSD256 but they master in Analog. The Pyramix system allows for editing and mastering in DSD. DSD can only be edited in any form by Pyramix, Sonoma, or converted to something else like analog or PCM.

Yeah they never said, Id like to know too. I think its Thelonious Monk - Genius Of Modern Music though.

You can see on Kevin’s face, that he is uncomfortable you trying to defend the prices by AP.
It offers a good product but recent prices are ridiculous.
From the look on Kevins face.. it seemed like Kevin thought records are overpriced as he shrugged off that discussion.
Vinyl is VERY expensive to manufacture.

The solution is not to buy them, its the only way these conmen will learn.
The AP price hike has nothing to do with MoFi. Prices have gone up across the board, due to inflation. It is what it is.

If Kevin doesn't like his work criticized by Tom Port and yet still feels entitled to criticize what Better Records is offering, maybe he should put his money where his mouth is and arrange with the companies he's cutting records for to offer a 100% money back guarantee on the records he cuts for them. Just a thought!
