  • Today I'll be exploring three different way of making coffee: Korea's morning coffee that contains an egg yolk; Senegal's café Touba, spiced with Grains of Paradise; and Rhode Island's own beloved coffee cabinet. 🥳

When I was younger if my grandmother had left over coffee she would keep it in a jar in the fridge & the next day she’d make us a special treat, She’d whisk sugar & a fresh egg until it lightly peaked & then she’d slowly add the little bit of leftover coffee & give it to me & my sisters & brother. She called it Italian egg nog.

Laurelie It really is! My Nanny said it has to be a very fresh egg. She did it with one of those old mixers that you cranked by hand. I do it in my stand mixer.
If you try it let me know how you like it. Just crack the egg in a bowl, add sugar to taste ( I like it sweet). Then slowly add the coffee. It doesn’t take a lot of coffee. You want it to be foamy & frothy

italian here, it sounds like a simplified version of Zabaione! we usually enjoy Marsala with it (fortified wine) but my dad does it with coffee too. He also used to give it to us as a treat on weekends, such a sweet memory.

That coffee syrup looked lethal......and delicious.
50 years ago when I was a little kid, my sister and I used to drink coffee milk all the time. It was just black coffee and plain old milk. Our biggest treat was when our parents would get us a delivered pizza and we would have cold pizza and coffee milk for breakfast on a Sunday morning. You have no idea what a treat that was.

xSteamPunk why? THIS is why people don’t feel like they can express themselves naturally, there’s always someone who gets BUTTHURT and claims arrogance, pretension or condescension and the truth is anyone can speak with eloquence should they so desire but the fear of being maligned as some sort of dilettante becomes a prohibitive factor.
I’ve been told, for darn near my 42 years that I speak well and it SHOULD be a compliment, but there is always a naysayer who weighs in with their pittance and acts like being cerebral or articulate is somehow a character flaw?
Utterly bizarre and antithetical to how it should be.

I mean, if you don't grow up somewhere, you're not from there. You're just not. You can be a citizen of a different country, but you still aren't that Nationality. I have spent all my life in Kansas. If I were to ever move to a different state, I would still be from Kansas. I would love to move to New England (preferably Maine), but I wouldn't be a Mainer if I did ever get to move there. Just as moving to England wouldn't suddenly make me English. That's not how it works.

Hi Emmy, I grew up in Senegal but live in San Francisco now. Café Touba is very popular in Senegal and the smell is absolutely delicious. But a little fun fact, people very rarely make it at home. There’s usually a coffee guy that comes around the neighborhood and will sell you a cup. Kinda like the ice cream truck here in the USA.
    Im glad you enjoyed it.

I remember adding slightly salted margarine on sweetened instant coffee when I was little. I dont think i was good but it was something. lol I just want to see the "magic" of margarine melting. It added richness to the coffee that some might think gross since it came pre-salted. I did not find it gross though but not amazing either. I did that until the day we're out of margarine for a while and forgot about that weird food combo.

I'm a big creamer-in-my-coffee person, and I ran out once right at the beginning of quarantine and didn't wanna go out till I had to, so I took an egg and beat it with some sugar till it was combined and poured that into hot coffee while stirring (didn't wanna scramble it) and it tasted JUST like I put cream in my coffee! Definitely gonna try it again, my folks got chickens and they just laid their first eggs yesterday!!!! I'm so excited haha, farm fresh eggs would be great I think :)

For the coffee syrup I'd probably use cold-brewed coffee. (Basically steep your coffee in cold water, in the fridge, for like 12 hours, and then strain out the grounds. Easy to do in a French press, but you could do it in literally anything.) Cold-brewed coffee is so much sweeter and less bitter than hot brew, so would probably make for a better syrup. (Or just as coffee. On a hot summer day, drop in some ice cubes and drink cold coffee.)

Gevalia is a Swedish coffee brand. The name is latin for Gävle, a town some distance north of Stockholm.
They used to have the slogan "For unexpected guests" ("När du får oväntat besök") and their commercials had stuff like someone skydiving into someone's livingroom or crashing their car through someone's hedge and then having Gevalia with the owner of the house/garden/whatever, which always amused me as a kid.

I think the ‘coffee with an egg yolk’ you’re talking about might be ‘Ssangh-hwa-cha’. It’s actually not made with coffee but usually with various medicinal ingredients, but you are right about the last few finishing touches - egg yolk and pine nuts. So technically, it’s not a coffee but a tea.

Amazing! Just amazing! Another greatway to enjoy coffee is to add some condensed milk to it aa a creamer, or you can make coffee ice cream by mixing heavy cream, condensed milk, and some good brewed coffee - mix it in a whisk and even a blender works fine too! Then freeze it overnight.

You should try Scandinavian Egg Coffee. They mix eggs (shell and all!) with the coffee grounds, then bring water to a boil in a porcelain coffee pot. They put the whole egg/coffee ground mix into the boiling water and then turn off the heat. The mixture settles to the bottom of the coffee pot and what remains is the clearest, yummiest coffee ever. I hope I got this right. I first had this in Minnesota at a Lutheran Church. Delicious!!
