I like when he "They're not scary. They've done scary things, but they deserve homes and they deserve good home." Truer words were never spoken. Soldiers have also done 'scary things', so dogs should be treated the same as soldiers...like heros.
When you say "Dogs" it's basically means that ALL dogs should be treated like heroes. Ex: Random Street dog with rabbies bites innocent child, better treat the dog like a hero.
They do something that 99% of us wouldn’t want to do, never a truer word spoken! This dog and all service dogs deserve this level of happiness and love!
For a moment, I'm speechless... after watching this video. Sgt. Julian McDonald, I SALUTE you both, RESPECT. Thanks National Geographic for sharing, great video.
Great story of amazing love and gratitude of an injured dog who struggled to stay alive to save the life of others. What an amazing love of the Father manifested through this beautiful dog !
I am a police lieutenant and dog handler with the Berlin police in Berlin-Germany. My dog is a colleague, friend, family member, loved by my wife and sons and will immediately enjoy permanent retirement with the family when he retires. He is a great creature and deserves the utmost respect. May he stay healthy for a long, long time.
This vet salutes Layka. A fine soldier she is. Thank you to all who played a part in saving this fine animal. She deserves a family and the sense of being a part of it. That's the least that one could do, but the most is adopting and loving her as you have done. Thanks and a salute to you, also.
ANYONE who says these animals are excess equipment are fools, including top brass military "leaders" These animals are beyond hero's and for military brass to speak of them with such low respect sickens me!
They do. But not all dogs get it sadly. Especially in Law enforcement. Dogs deserve just as much respect as our men and women. What they do and endure is far greater than what any human can do. And has done.
at 2:56 I was actually really shocked when he said this fact which had never even crossed my mind. I had always viewed animals in the military as soldiers themselves. True, they may not even know that their fighting for a certain country but what we do know is that they are fighting for the survival of their comrades. I have respect for animals in the military like I have respect for the men and women in the military.
I needed to see this today, my cat's facing recovery from a broken leg surgery and I was feeling so helpless, like he wouldn't make it and just worried about how much pain he's been through. This made me realize I gotta do my job as his owner and give all of me to make him better and it will all work out eventually. To the guy in the video: There's a special place in heaven for people who *care* about animals and children, and my friend... there's a seat in there with your name on it.
Thanks for serving Julian, beautiful Belgian Malinois. A law needs to be passed to stop viewing military dogs as equipment, they put their life on the line just as the soldiers do. They deserve better.
greekatso Look They don't put their lives on the line for us We sacrifice these dogs because their less important than a humans life. The dogs don't really have a say in it I do agree these dogs deserve much better than they get. They do their job way better then must people do.
They are family and have saved so many lives. Thank you to all animals, service men and women for your service in Australia, USA, UK, CANADA, New Zealand and every other country 💞🙏🏼
I feel so bad for this dog, and this soldier. They should never have had to go through such traumatizing things, but they did. The dog, despite missing one leg, seems to still have an amazing family, and life, and so does the soldier, despite having being through whatever hardship he had endured.God bless this dog, this soldier and all their friends and loved ones.
diablo09090909 well partially but one of the requirements before they spend the time and money training the dog is they make sure the dog is at least above the normal aggression levels.
First, thank you for your service. Second, thank you for being so kind. What a great dog and a great family. It breaks my heart when service animals are abandoned or euthanized after their job is done. You are so fortunate to have what you have and that dog is so lucky to have you. Very touching and heart warming. I have 4 dogs myself and they are my family.
You said it: We owe them so much. These inocent lovely creatures are more big hearted than we can ever imagine. God bless you for adopting this magnificent specimen.
She is a perfect example of why I love/don't recommend Malinois. High energy, high drive, need a job, so if you can provide that you're golden. But they are not for the casual pet owner. I'm glad he was able to save her, and I'm glad she's at home with a family. I'm glad they both came home mostly whole. Best wishes and thoughts to them both.
I think you really got the right idea here, people are way too quick to blame a dog for behaviors that are the owners fault. Always research breed before you get an animal.
theRFPbros First he woke me up with his growling and i found he had jump on the kitchen counter.Place himself in front of the window making this creepy low growl. I realise a man was trying to get through my window at 2-3am ...Second time, i was in this small elevator with my dog. This HUGE guy cut in front of me to get in the elevator and smell like he bath in alcohol stood behind me . I tries to ignore him but notice he was quietly sneaking closer to me. The second time in glance discretely, i realize his hand was about to touch my hair. I swear my heart stop , just as he was millimeter from touching my hair. I heard this low scary growl and realize it was my dog (never bark.growl before those 2 incident). My dog started snaps his jaw in a threatening way to make the guy back up in the corner and hold him in place till we got to my floor which is the 10th floor. My dog held him in place till i walked out. ONCE i was out, he slowly back up to my side keeping eye contact with him....till the door shut. Then acted like nothing happen wagging tail. I spoiled him with steak those 2 week. :) Never trained him, he just knew what to do when i was in distress :)
My company had a bomb dog named Buster. He was an awesome dog, and probably saved us more times than we realized. These dogs are members of the unit, no discussion. But he would, without fail, snatch your water bottles and chew them to shit. Haha.
I love this video, the only thing that broke my heart was when he was sitting there at the door excited his master was coming in then they just walked right past him. He is like wait here I am! ! Lol. . I'm sure they do everything in line all the time. My dog owns me I don't own him. Lol
Karen Maxwell even with a dog bought from a breeder, the door threshold can become a "thing". It's important not to make the door threshold a big deal. With greetings, and jump ups, and pets. That leads to the dog getting anxious at the threshold, it holds importance, so you have to struggle to keep him from bolting, from being overly aggressive to guests at the door. And this would apply triply to a dog brought home from war service. You want the dog to feel at ease in it's own home, to trust the ones in charge of the territory. If the humans make a big deal of the door threshold, it becomes a bad thing.
Great story. So happy Layka got the treatment and loving home she deserves. I would gladly and proudly adopt an incredible animal like this. Can't believe they leave the dogs over where they have operations. That's disgusting treating a soldier like that, leaving a man behind in a foreign land. This needs to change asap.
Anthony Raw Aw does the baby boy has feeling. Does that little baby boy have to comment on how emotional and saddened he got. That tears came gushing out of his eyes when he saw a dog being saved. Pathetic, people like that should get blown to shreds in the army.
The dog is a hero, she deserves a good life with a family for the rest of her life. I pray no more wars that can put the life of the military working dogs and their handlers in danger.
Dogs deserve more than a treat. They do things we don't do. They are beautiful creatures god made and respect dogs and give them love they should recieve
Such a wonderful story about how far Dogs will go to protect the ones they are either working with, as in this case, or an everyday dog with its family. They don't think, just act. If it wasn't for this dog more funerals would've been required.
+jack smith This is a Belgian Malinois. Jessica is right, although Germans were used more so about 20 years ago. Mals are the primary military breed as of today.

i agree
+Briana M Agreed why treat animals any different
I agree.
too true
When you say "Dogs" it's basically means that ALL dogs should be treated like heroes. Ex:
Random Street dog with rabbies bites innocent child, better treat the dog like a hero.
I have major respect for military dogs.
It's not like they have a choice.
And how is that an excuse?
+BurnRoddy That's like saying "I have major respect for slaves for working so hard" it's kinda forced.
Capn_Wreckz
So you don't have respect for slaves? What a heartless person you are sir.
+BurnRoddy God, you just don't see me point. They're being forced to do their job. Its not like they chose it.
They do something that 99% of us wouldn’t want to do, never a truer word spoken! This dog and all service dogs deserve this level of happiness and love!
I love how that dog can just adapt to only having 3 legs, it's amazing.
I know right
there is a dog that can walk on two legs
Average Alien
Quiet foo'
no there isnt
And even more Amazing, thé animals just take thé challenge in stride. They don't sit around feeling Sorry for themselves. It IS truly awesome.
That dog is beautiful
It's is
true that
It's so beautiful
Yes it is
That's True buddy
thank you for not leaving him behind
linda boyce her btw
SHE! Sheesh...
You guys literally corrected this guy from 4 years ago
IcognitoDude31 girl*
melina ugh don’t guess genders
The dog served its country, it deserves to be treated with honor like any other veteran.
Dogs are NOT equipment! They are just as important as those of us that have served. They deserve to be treated with the same respect.
For a moment, I'm speechless... after watching this video. Sgt. Julian McDonald, I SALUTE you both, RESPECT. Thanks National Geographic for sharing, great video.
repent and turn to Jesus and live holy obey him no him no him no him no him
@@A-Ylover0FtheLordJesus Wut?
Your only supposed to Salute to Officers and above. But he deserves it. Lol
Great story of amazing love and gratitude of an injured dog who struggled to stay alive to save the life of others. What an amazing love of the Father manifested through this beautiful dog !
Even with just 3 legs, I'm sure that dog would take another bullet for him. Dogs truly are the noblest of creatures.
You certainly owe your life to that dog. YOU FOUND A REAL FRIEND.
I am a police lieutenant and dog handler with the Berlin police in Berlin-Germany.
My dog is a colleague, friend, family member, loved by my wife and sons and will immediately enjoy permanent retirement with the family when he retires.

A-Y truth 🙏🏼
Top brass have always been disconnected from reality. Just look at the ones who want to take the a10 out of service.
They need to make armor for dogs so they are protected
No use. They need the mobility and they already have some "armor" on there backs
***** Awesome
I Mattz they use titanium teeth as replcement for sick or broken teeth for some dogs
They do. But not all dogs get it sadly. Especially in Law enforcement. Dogs deserve just as much respect as our men and women. What they do and endure is far greater than what any human can do. And has done.
+Ryan Belsha Stupid humans need to stop fighting stupid wars because of their stupid greed
Amen America owes veteran dogs.

Brilliant, absolutely brilliant. Soldiers should not have to fight to bring dogs home, ever.
Here i am mad at my dog because she peed on my bed but this Makes me wanna hold my dog and cherish every second I have with her.

Lashay M sure this dog did not choose to be a military dog. But he chose to saved the guy’s life. He could just run away and save his own life.
Stop sending to the ME they don’t like them in their embassy’s forget to feed them.
They are family and have saved so many lives. Thank you to all animals, service men and women for your service in Australia, USA, UK, CANADA, New Zealand and every other country 💞🙏🏼
I'm glad this beautiful and amazing dog found a family and a forever home. God bless her and her human family too.
The unconditional love you get from a dog cannot be compared to just about anything else..
I feel so bad for this dog, and this soldier. They should never have had to go through such traumatizing things, but they did. Layka served her country with valor and bravery.
Layka deserves a Congressional Medal of Honor for her service and sacrifice.
How it should be. Dogs like these should be given to the people they served with. Not abandoned, not killed given a proper life.
"too aggressive"... isn't it us who make them like that in the first place? That's a lame excuse... I am glad he adopted her :-)
diablo09090909 they train them to be aggressive against enemies on *COMMAND* otherwise they should be disciplined and obedient
diablo09090909 well partially but one of the requirements before they spend the time and money training the dog is they make sure the dog is at least above the normal aggression levels.
*Friends gotta stick together.*

Dogs are wonderful animals, they are loyal, loving and smart. Their bond with humans is truely unique.
You said it: We owe them so much. These inocent lovely creatures are more big hearted than we can ever imagine. God bless you for adopting this magnificent specimen.
Wounded and still perfectly willing to attack bad guys and work. Also filled the family guard position. So loyal and loving. Sweet.

Yeah, and like this if you agree whoever dislikes this video has NO LIFE
God Bless all the K9s who serve and those who take care of them.
My dog was not in the army but he saved my life twice. So i understand what he means, they will protect you even if it kills them.
How did it save your life twice if you don't mind me asking?

Karen Maxwell I thought the same thing. They needed to acknowledge him. He had this look on his face........
♡ thank you! ♡♡
I thought poor thing because it looked like he just wanted a pat on the head but instead of an happy smile he got a sad disappointed frown 😭💔💔💔

Pathetic, people like that should get blown to shreds in the army.

Jessica is right, although Germans were used more so about 20 years ago. Mals are the primary military breed as of today.
Unreal story, to adopt your mate a dog, just awesome and a reflection of the pride of the military spirit.
Both the guy and the dog are grateful for each other.

I wonder if are there service medals for these dogs. This one deserves minimum of the Silver Star!
