It has to prove itself against Taco when it comes to reliability. That is the only thing that may prevent people from buying it.
Most of my miles were on highway, and all of my on-road observations apply to highway driving. It's too dangerous and busy on the highway to shoot there.
The interior space, rear seat flip up cargo space, rear in-bed trunk space and overall seat comfort of the Ridgeline are hard to beat. If you need to tow more than 5,000lbs or really do plan to venture far off road then the Ridgeline won't apply otherwise I think it's still the midsize truck to beat and is worth the jump in price to get into even a Ridgeline Sport.

Thanks Tom! Great looking truck, reliability should be good as it's the prior gen motor/ transmission(late model year) and chassis. Interior is very truck like, which is a good thing! Reminds me of the old Hardbody pickups...
Tacomas are OK trucks. Nothing special. Owned two of them (bought new) a 2nd gen and 3rd gen. Tacomas have the reputation for sure, but frankly, the reputation is from 20 years ago and applies to their simple 4 cylinder pool-cleaner/pest applicator 2wd model. New ones are just as good/bad as anything else out there. They are about a generation behind in engine/transmission technology and get the same mileage (with half the power) of any modern full-size truck. The social media deluge of "overlanding" hasn't hurt Tacoma's image, which is what most of the 25 to 35 year old owners (target demographic) really care about ;-)
Curious as to the turning radius is improved. Truly was the only thing about my 2019 I didn't like. It made a midsized drive like a full size, and that is what I have liked about midsize/compact trucks. The Nissan gal was spot on about what's important to me in a truck.
_"The frame is proven and is very reliable. So why change or start from the ground-up?"_ A sec later. _"We've made several modifications. So, it's a very heavily modified frame."_
Had their patience tested...I hate auto media's mentality towards models that last more than 5 or 6 years. The frontiers success is due in part to the platform not being changed...not growing larger and becoming more expensive as its competitors did. Frontier sales figures hardly changed over it's whole life, proving that buyers didn't care about it being new or having all the newest features. Many guys just need a solid, capable pickup. My 05 frontier is still nicer than some cars I've owned. It is a far cry from my dad's fully loaded 2015 dodge ram...but I don't need or want a luxury truck. When every auto maker goes "up market " with their models, in order to increase profit margins, people buy them partially because it's what's being offered. When the time comes to replace my frontier...I won't look for a 2022 model...I will look for a 2020 model with low miles and proven tech.

Nissan is in the midst of a huge re-alignement of their product portfolio. I believe they have come out with a new updated and redesigned model almost every 6 months for the last year or more. Each and every one has been a significant improvement over the previous model. As such, they may not have had the funds and means to complete a full reengineering of the Frontier. Leaf springs are typically not great for handling but they are more compact than some independent configurations that can intrude into the bed. Nissan is in the game again, putting out competent products that are truly competitive in their class. The new Z is the only disappointment. No model has ever captured the impact of the first generation of that car. The designers need to go back to the drawing board on that one.
@@czar2321 why the attitude? I said leaf springs date from horse and buggy days. If they are still used in many trucks, so be it; doesn't change anything; it is still 200 or more year old technology.

@@DrivenCarReviews oh, I didn’t realize they were using the same platform. No wonder so many people complain about the driving position in both generations. Thanks!
Hearing that this is just a tilt steering wheel potentially kills this for me. I'm actively looking for a nice midsized truck. Honestly Ridgeline is my number one pick at the moment and I was holding out for this. Hopefully it'll pop up in dealership soon and I can drive one. Worst case I can hopefully save a few grand and buy an outgoing Pro-4X on a liquidation sale lol
We have a 2019 with the six speed. Ridgeline does almost everything right except for infotainment. It is a hot mess. Our year did not even have the volume knobs, at least Honda added it now but they lost the good transmission lever. Our six speed has been reliable. Whatever you do if you get the Ridgeline get it with all wheel drive which i think now is standard. That all wheel drive system is really really good. Overall, I recommend Ridgeline to everybody. Not a thing wrong in almost 40,000 miles and almost 3 years. It had one recall for not taking it to car wash that i am sure it is fixed now.
@@MrMannyhw Taco is a great truck. I can not fit in it (I 6' 3). To me the seating position is just strange, i think it is because of it being so high off the ground but I can't fit into it comfortably.
@@paulm6481 I guess it's hard to imagine. I am more of small built, so I can fit in everything. So, the Taco's floor to roof is shorter than other trucks? That's so interesting.
I'm wondering about the comfort and quality of the interior. It still looks to be full of cheap, black, textured plastics. The seats look pretty nice though. This seems like a pretty good value but if the interior feels cheap that's a deal breaker.
I personally thought they were smart leaving the truck alone all those years. It wasn't fancy, but very reliable if not the latest, greatest, most up to datest. In general, I'm not a Nissan fan especially since Renault bought them. Too much French DNA and bad quality, but the Frontier was still good. We'll see about the new one.
@@DrivenCarReviews Kinda do... They are both small pickup options. Santa Cruz has more comfort, Frontier has more bed. For those of us who need a truck for bikes (surfboards, snowboards, camping gear, etc) - they are both worth looking at.
I did a 700 mile to Boise in the previous generation (brand new truck). It too was quiet, powerful and thirsty. Comfortable enough cruising down the highway. Now, while all the other manufacturers crow about an all new architecture with reduced weight Nissan raves about a 20 year old architecture that weighs hundreds more than its outgoing model. Obviously Nissan just doesn’t have the funds to bring out all new product. They’re hurting.
Nissan is growing massive tho lol. Their Rogue is the best selling SUV of the year, the Friontier beats everything in it class in every aspect, the pathfinder is gorgeous, the Sentra is a game changer. You sound like a taco guy let's hook up a chain so I can pull your taco across the lot with my 40 more horses lol.
Was hoping for a little more, such as a tilting steering wheel (it's 2021), fuel economy not worse than full size trucks, and a more enticing price point (the pro 4X base is priced the same as a Tacoma Offroad) and Toyotas have proven to hold their value. Wasn't a fan of the ranger; too much body roll, squishy breaks, and super sensitive gas pedal, not to mention their history of the the 2.3l turbo having a history of head gasket failures. Maybe ford will fix the now almost 10 year old current ranger design with the updated model coming out next year. I like what I'm hearing from frontier reviews about the ride quality so will definitely be test driving while I'm looking for a new truck next month.

I would drive them back to back before you think saving a couple grand is a good idea.
Not getting a Tacoma?
I agree...the interior looks kind of cheap.
I suggest looking at the interior in person. Personally, I think only Ridgeline beats it.
The interior is the main reason I like it. It's more modern and techy than the tacoma.
Hold off for the Navara, with ultra Trim for 50-60K
I personally thought they were smart leaving the truck alone all those years. It wasn't fancy, but very reliable if not the latest, greatest, most up to datest. In general, I'm not a Nissan fan especially since Renault bought them. Too much French DNA and bad quality, but the Frontier was still good. We'll see about the new one.
Do owners of smaller trucks tow less or are their trucks just unable to
Tom your money: Frontier or Santa Cruz???
Not biting on that. Vehicles are very personal choices and I can see both of them working very well for the right person.
@@DrivenCarReviews Awwwwwww.......
@@bikebudha01 These two don't compete head-to-head.
Yes they are... and this isn't the answer to my truck needs.
@@johng.4959 Could always just spend $100K on a diesel rig from one of the big three. That's the cost of fulfilling your truck needs.
Nissan is growing massive tho lol. Their Rogue is the best selling SUV of the year, the Friontier beats everything in it class in every aspect, the pathfinder is gorgeous, the Sentra is a game changer. You sound like a taco guy let's hook up a chain so I can pull your taco across the lot with my 40 more horses lol.
this has a more modern engine and transmission than the tacoma and colorado
@@rodneyscribner8552 lol i choked on air reading this comment
Great engine plenty strong. For the price a lot of truck.
Lots of excuses for no rear coils but, the new Tacoma will have them. Nissan needs to step it up. Need the Z car TTV6 option.
It has a tilt wheel. Not telescopic.
Did you ask about the X-Terra?
Yes. "We don't comment on future products".
Frontier hit a home run?
