BEST TARP AND BIVY SETUP? STONE GLACIER ULTRALIGHT TARP

- A few years ago, I did a video about my tarp and bivy setup for backpacking. It really is my favorite setup on an adventure. In that video I used a lightweight tarp and my Paria Breezy Mesh Bivy. The setup works well. But, I have always wanted to find a tarp that fits my needs more for this particular setup. I think I may have found the perfect tarp for this setup. It is the SkyAir ULT tarp. It only weighs 8 ounces and is a true minimalist setup.
Stone Glacier also created a modular design in this tarp. You can purchase the inner netting with a floor, a footprint, and a full vestibule addition to the tarp. With the modular additions, you can carry only the pieces of the tent/tarp that you need for your particular adventure outdoors. Check out this gear review of Stone Glacier’s SkyAir ultralight tarp. #tarp #bivy #backpacking #backpackingadventures #hike #hiking #ultralightbackpacking #ultralightgear #ultralight #outside #best #besttarp #gearreview #gear

fun fact: stone glaciers tents are rebranded, sling fin tent. geared to hunters, I've been using the slingfin split wing (same exact shelter just orange) for the past 2 years and absolutely love it.
a mod I did to the back was add a tent pole cup from mountain laurel designs to make set up easier and faster
Great idea!
@ASTHECROWFLIESHIKING you'll want the vestibule in rain, if you carry an umbrella that can substitute almost perfectly
@stonedapeadventures - I have used my umbrella with my tarp. Great multi use gear hack. 👍🏻
Very cool! I always enjoy your reviews and support for good companies, thanks.
Appreciate ya! Yeah, great tarp. Crow✌️
Great review, thx for sharing!
We do something similar with the modular Durston Gear X-Mid. Since the fly, net inner, and groundsheet are available separately, we can have full bug protection or opt for just the fly in "tarp mode". We think it's a great way to dabble in tarps while still having the option for full protection.
See you at Pinhoti Fest 2024!
That is a great tent and I think that is a good selling point of the Durston to do that . I have liked this so far. Great little tarp. Crow✌️
I almost picked up the Slingfin Splitwing when I was looking into tarp & bivy. I like all-in-one modular design. Looks great for beginners who want a tarp system with less of a learning curve. I ended up wanting more pitching options. With the cat cut, you can only pitch it with an A frame configuration. I ended up going with a made to order Borah Gear 7x9 flat tarp & ultralight bivy in wide. Love them. I find that I mostly go with modified flying diamond pitch for better views.
Great comment Rod! I like the Borah Gear stuff. Thanks for watching it. Crow✌️
Awesome Review!!! I normally hammock camp I do have a couple of ground setups. My back usually gives me more problems when I go to the ground.
Lots of my friends say the same thing. I’m going to try a hammock again. Years ago I tried one and couldn’t get comfortable. I think it was Becuase I had a 10 ft hammock. I am going to try an 11 ft hamkock.
I have almost the exact same designed tarp/tent that I got from one of the Chinese shopping aps 3 years ago for $35.00. I love it. I use the same bivy you have and I put my back pack up against the front trekking pole to block the front in case of rain. It's awesome.
Awesome! I have really liked this so far. Great design and super light. Great comment. Crow✌️
Another great gear review, Crow.
Appreciate it John. ✌️
I mostly hammock camp, but I do have a Paria Arches 1P that I use when tenting. I also enjoy cowboy camping when the conditions are right. I've thought about doing a bivy with one of my smaller hammock tarps.
I’m about to get into hammock camping. I thought I would try it. Paria makes some good stuff. ✌️
Brad, that is the way I started out camping. Super lightweight, but it is not for me anymore. I will take the weight penalty and carry my hammock and tarp! Much easier to get in and out of when you are as old as me. Happy Hiking
Excellent comment my friend! I hear ya. Appreciate ya! Crow✌️
Cool design! Looks kind of similar to my tarptent protrail, but just a standalone tarp. Tough to beat the ventilation of a tarp style shelter over a sealed in tent.
Thanks for watching it Matty! Yeah, this is a great ultralight setup. I really like it. Crow✌️
@ASTHECROWFLIESHIKING ive always loved tarp shelters, but have never been able to find a bivy setup that didnt make me feel like i was in a coffin.. Being a little claustrophobic sucks, lol.
@MattyOutdoors - I hear ya!
Neat, kind of looks a bit like my old Mountain Hardwear Stingray 11.5 catenary tarp (2lbs though with a sectioned pole and stakes) I picked up privately. Except mine doesn't have the closed back. Can be cinched down though.. I bought the Sea to Summit pyramid nano mosquito net bivy I guess you'd call it. It wraps around the edges of the sleeping pad. Nice description. Cool stuff.
Thanks for watching it. Yeah, I really like this setup. Crow✌️
Pretty slick little setup!
Yeah, I love it. Great little tarp. Crow✌️
I'd definitely need to have the inner tent. The thought of a snake, spider or skunk trying to snuggle with me during the night would keep me wide awake. I think it's a really neat tarp, though. I like that it's modular. I'd also have to have full coverage from peepers because I'm so paranoid of prying eyes. 😂 Looks like it has a significant amount of room inside. Pretty cool!
I hear ya. Yeah, I typically use the bivy inside. It is a great tarp. I like the modular design too. Thanks for watching it. Crow✌️
I was just researching UL tarps yesterday. Thanks for the info and tips
Appreciate you watching it. Crow✌️
Nice to see more vendors using tarps
Me too! I love a tarp and bivy setup. Crow✌️
I like the netting. I don’t like the creepy crawlers down here in the south. 😂😂😂. Thanks for sharing. Safe Adventures 👍😀✝️
Thanks my friend! ✌️
Neat setup
Thanks for watching it. I really like it. Crow✌️
Looks like a pretty sweet set up. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks Brad. Yeah, this is a great little ultralight tarp. ✌️
Looks like JBen was in charge of your wardrobe for this video!
Facts!!! 😂😂😂
I like the bivy and tarp set up. I think I might try one again. 🦑
Me too. Especially in the winter or long days on the trail. ✌️
My setup is a tarp and net tent from a pyramid tent I had. But I’m in Texas now so considering going to a free standing tent to keep the snakes out.
That is a good option sometimes when there are no places for stakes. Thanks for watching it. Crow✌️
Smart looking setup.
Thanks John. It’s a nice little tarp. Crow✌️
That looks really awesome!
It is a super light setup. ✌️
That is a nice tarp design
Thanks for watching it Mark. ✌️
I flip flop between hammock camping & tarp camping (bivy less) I just use a head net
Both are awesome. I am starting to get into hammock camping again. Appreciate you watching it. Crow✌️
Thanks for sharing. Can you please share more about your footprint. You made a video 2 years ago about that but I see you're using something else here so I'm curious 😉
This is a piece of Rhino “guard” I think is the name. It is what I use under my Zpacks Plex Solo. It is a roofing sheet, like Tyvek, but, it has a texture that doesn’t slide. I love it. I guess they have it at Home Depot or Lowe’s
@@ASTHECROWFLIESHIKING Thanks. The only problem is that I'm in Belgium, so no Home Depot. I didn't even found where to buy Tyvek 🫤
Anyway, I should be able to find some waterproof barrier material.
@ppolleunus - My bad. I wasn’t even thinking about you being outside the U.S. so happy to have someone from Belgium watching my videos. Yeah, whatever home wrap material they have there will work for this. Appreciate you very much! 🇧🇪
@@ASTHECROWFLIESHIKING Yeah, I know, Americans tend to believe everybody is in/from the US 😜😂 That's OK but the units of measurement is 🤯 Well, maybe one day we'll have standards all around the world 🙏
@ppolleunus 😂😂😂✌️
Hey brother been a while but I’m still watching your videos I just haven’t been commenting much lately. Great setup my friend I really like the tarp setup idea and I’m working on a setup for my lightweight kit. Do you have a recommendation for a good lightweight pack…..that is affordable 😂😂😂 that would help me get a little lighter than my old mountain smith? My DD travel hammock is a Bivvy and would work great for a setup like this 👍👍😃👊
What size pack are you looking for? It is hard to make a recommendation on a pack. They are so personal. I use a HMG Junction. But, they are kind of expensive. But, I think they are some of the best on the market. As far as affordable, I think REI makes some good packs that are light, not ultralight, but comfortable. What are you looking for? There are a lot of options. Hope all is well my friend. ✌️
@@ASTHECROWFLIESHIKING gonna try to stay below 50 liters so maybe it will help with my overpacking affliction 😂🤣 I’m not sure if we have an REI close by and from prior experience I think it would be better if I tried it on before I buy it. Don’t get me wrong my old Mountain Smith frost fire 2 is a great pack but it’s big and it’s easy to overload and I’m working on that habit!! Lol thanks for the info brother 🙏
Gatewood Cape less hassle less weight one Pole does it all
I’ll check it out. That is Six Moon Design?
This looks like the splitwing
Yeah, very closely designed. ✌️
