    I don't have a bandsaw but I do have the large 3" casters on my Mk510. When I installed them ten years ago I stupidly decided to protect the nice soft urethane(?) tires with Gorilla Tape to keep them from scuffing on my rough concrete driveway. Big mistake. The glue gummed up horribly and, like the residue on your bandsaw wheels, is very difficult to remove. I discovered today that enamel thinner does a good job of dissolving the dried-up glue crud. It might also work on your bandsaw wheels.
    Also, while I had the SS upside down I decided to return my caster mounts to their original holes thereby giving me another inch + of height and enough clearance to negotiate the ramp at the end of my driveway without scraping the ground. But now the casters won't retract enough for the steel leg panels to touch the floor. No problem, a 2 x 4 under each side panel fills the space perfectly and allows full retraction while gripping the floor enough for most operations. If vibration becomes a problem then a bit of rubber sheet from an old bicycle inner tube glued under the 2 x 4s should dampen it and improve the grip. Bruce, Japan

    My experience:
    1. Take the wheels off the saw. It is well worth the effort involved.
    2.Clamp it in your vise and heat the rim with a propane torch. When the gunk starts to bubble, wipe it off with a rag.

    Hi Scott. I replaced my tires with the blue ones about 6 months back. I noticed their width was a little narrow as well. I contacted to supplier and they told me they made lots of these for ShopSmith bandsaws and over the years the wheel width was not consistent. So they make them now to fit the more narrow ones and so you don't have trouble trimming them when they are too wide. That would be a painful task.

    The GooGone has to get to the adhesive to soften it. I don't think it will penetrate the rubber very well. I might remove the adhesive residue after the rubber is gone. It is perfect for removing uncoated paper labels. There is also a residue left behind that has to be removed. It smells good.

    Thanks Scott for another helpful video on the Shopsmith Bandsaw. You're saving us time and reducing frustration! A side question... Do you have a source for zero clearance inserts for the aluminum table? On scroll-type cuts I have used tape on the wide throat opening to avoid chip-out, but would prefer a dedicated insert. Thanks in advance for your thoughts

      Actually I don't. I have been in touch with a guy who is 3D printing them on eBay and noted that he pictures a modern SS BS with an aluminum table, but the insert seems to be for the older cast iron table. • @MyGrowthRings
      @MyGrowthRings  3 роки тому

      Not really. You could add the double tilt parts that would put the headstock under the table, but the 500 table wound allow the quill to pass through the table. And, add to that the fact that the top speed of a non-PowerPro headstock is 5200rpm, while router bits are made to spin 20,000+. Even with a PowerPro the top speed is 10,000 rpms, so really it is much better as a shaper than a router. Scott

    Did anyone comment on what is wrong with the regular tires? I have used them forever and they do need replacing now and then, they are less expensive. I use the rubber tire on my shop smith and my Delta.

    • @MyGrowthRings
      @MyGrowthRings  3 роки тому

      Nope, no one has made that comment and it’s a fair observation. My dry rotted tires worked just fine for over 30 years, and had I replaced them with rubber that pair would likely outlive me. The biggest advantage to the urethane tires is that they don’t require the complete removal of the old adhesive (though I removed all of mine) and they don’t require the application of new adhesive. They are also a bit more forgiving and durable, but I never had a durability issue with the rubber tires. In other words, it’s a little like Coke vs iced tea. Scott
