Introducing Series : Episode 30
Berber Skinks (Eumeces schneideri)
NOW TO TRY AND DO JUSTICE TO ONE OF THE MOST UNDERRATED BEGINNER LIZARDS OUT THERE. HERE IS MY LOVE AFFAIR LAID BARE WITH BERBERS!!
Video notes.
BERBER SKINK OR SCHNEIDER’S SKINK
(EUMECES SCHNEIDERI ) BUT ALSO LISTED AS
NOVOEUMECES SCHNEIDERI
first described by Daudin in 1802 as SCINCUS SCHNEIDERI
in honor of German Zoologist Johann Gottleb Theaenus Schneider
was subsequently reclassified:
by Isodore St Hilaire in 1827 to EUMECES PAVIMENTATUS
by AMC Dumeril & Bibron in 1839 to PLESTIODON ALDROVANDI
back to EUMECES SCHNEIDERI by Boulenger in 1890
then to NOVOEUMECES SCHNEIDERI by Griffith in 2000
5 Subspecies are recognised but are essentially invisible to the hobby.
E.S. barani - (2007) - Turkey (Anatolia)
E.S. pavimentatus - (1827) - Jordan, Lebanon, Syria
E.S. princeps - (1839) - Armenia, Azebaijan Caucasus
E.S. zarudnyi - (1900) - Iran, Helmand Province Afghanistan, Mekran Coastal region of Pakistan
Eumeces has been under major taxonomic review. Many species once thought to be Eumeces have subsequently been reclassififed:
Plestiodon - Mexico, USA, Canada and Japan
Eurylepis - (Thal Skinks) - India
Mesoscincus - Mexico
Only animals remain in Eumeces are Skinks or African origin in the Schneideri ‘group’
algeriensis - Morocco & Algeria (super cool!) - very rarely seen
blythianus - Afrghanistan & Punjab
cholistanensis - ?
persicus - Not given but must be Persia (Iraq and Iran)
The listed geographic range is extensive and indludes:
Algeria, Tunisia, Libya, Egypt, Israel, Cyprus, Turtkey, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Dagestan, Russia, Turcmenistan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan. Azerbaijan, Georgia, N Pakistan and NW India.
Adult size is given as 45cm (18inches) - larger males are impressive. Very heavy set, large heads.
There lies the rub
Sexual identifiers on older larger animals are relatively straight forward. The issue lies with younger animals WHERE DIMORPHISM IS STILL TO MANIFEST. Also fed on a soley insectivorous diet they can be chronically slow to mature.
Males generally have a larger head in all dimensions, and a supposedly brighter flank or side striping. The striping forget about, its not accurate enough. The head is however, but you will need a mature male to accurately identify. Females, particularly in breeding condition will develop jowels in the throat giving the head somewhat of a triangular aspect.
My Breeding trials
Ryan and Rachels Breeding success and subsequent frustrations.
WILD STUDIES conducted by STEPHEN GOLDBERG of Whittler California suggest sexual synchrony in Spring with examples peaking in March April and May.
They are discussed as being MONOESTROUS or only single clutch producers per year.
may go some way to explain the frustrations as so many other common lizards are POLYESTROUS in habit.
DIET:
Livefoods, eggs, snails, worms, cat food, salad (true omnivore)
ENCLOSURE / BASKING TEMPS / RANGE / HUMIDITY (NOT NEEDED) / THERMOSTATS UV EXPOSURE. - Домашні улюбленці та дикі тварини
Awesome 👌
Awesome channel. Lovin the detailed and scientific knowledge.
My mate managed to breed them last year. He's keeping all the baby's
I had seen these about 20years ago when i had looked at the hobby. I got a leopard gecko instead. Now 20years on i have just picked up a berber skink at last. Still have that same gecko mind u. This vid was a great help. Cheers
Fell in love with these guys, got a group of 4 adults last year. Got 3 eggs of one of my females and hatched them all out. All 3 babies are still doing well.
SUPERB NEWS!!!! - WELL DONE!!! XXXX = LET US KNOW IF YOU REPEAT THE FEAT AS THAT SEEMS TO BE THE CHALLENGE.
How do you sex them I impulse bought one and I don’t know it’s gender
Man Im so jealous with your specimen its chill af lol. Mine absolutely hates being picked up, but loves being pet alongside his body and especially his head. One thing Ive discovered about them is that the metallic scale they have can actually change colours depending on the substrate. At first I was using a white sand (the same when I picked him up from the shop) and the colour was silver /then/. Few months after, I switched to black sand and his colour changed from silver to goldish bronze (and metallic at that), much like the one youre handling there, if not darker. Save for the few hours when its day and hot, he burrows throughout the rest of the day until the sun's out again.
Just got my first one!
First video of yours I've watched, but I have to chime in and say that I love that these little guys are finally starting to get the attention they deserve! I had one when I was a teenager and she was by far the most interesting, trustworthy lizard I have ever had the pleasure of caring for. I was able to hand feed her from my fingers and she never nabbed my skin. Her burrowing instincts also made it so that if I wore a hat on my head, she would crawl from my shoulder to underneath my hat, and just fall asleep. I can't go on enough about how much I loved that little skink, and how very glad I am to have had her in my life! Over all, they are great companions and I can't wait until I'm in a place in my life where I can get a captive bred little one to care for.
hello chaz. great video. amazing looking lil lizards. maybe need to look in too some lizards.
Very helpful video! Thanks for sharing.
Great vid, very informative. I have had one for almost 20 years now and am afraid he will die soon. He is not showing signs of death approching but it's been roughly 18 years and I am pretty sure he came from the wild so who knows how old he is.
Information on them is hard to come by and he is an incredable lizard, so cute and lovely. I will miss him when he is gone. I have never bread any animal but do wish more of theses where in the hobby and hope breeding becomes successful but I feel the babies would be quite expensive in comparison to the wild caught, that would be the hard part to get people possibly to purchase captive-bred when you can find the wild caught for $20😐.
I guess it would just be that few who would want to support captive-bred in the hobby and support the breeders and try to saturate the hobby with captive bread ones.
Thanks so much for video! Tons of great info! How deep should substrate be for egg laying?
I’m having a hard time getting mine to get fruits and veggies, any tips?
hi mate, would you do or consider a shop tour someday?
NOT MUCH TO SEE BRO - WE ARE ONLY A LITTLE REPTILE CENTRE IN NORTH OF uk. nOT ONE OF THESE SUPER CENTRES.
Is it ok to use ground walnut shells as substrate for Berbers
yes fine
Hey i had mine for a couple of months but 2 weeks ago he stoped eating and is trying to escape do you know anything that can help
We’re you able to figure this out and have a solution? Thats what my skink is doing now
Well done Chaz another great one, could you be a little more enthusiastic 😁.Can’t condone wild caught, captive bred no excuse.
I RECOGNISE THE SENTIMENT, BUT SIMPLY AN IMPOSSIBILITY WITH THIS SPECIES.
I just rescued a skink that I am sure is a Schneiders skink. Could I send you a photo to confirm? I want to be sure the husbandry is correct. It was kept in poor condition and not fed properly.
