Hello!I live in russia,i was going to herping sometimes, this is so cool snake! Some people in russia have morf "super yellow",thats this snake, but REALLY yellow+dark black colors, really beautiful. But in forests they looks like your snake - black and some lines like white,yellow-white in them body.. Lovw this snakes
This video helped me to make up my mind in choosing my 2nd snake. It may not be super colorful like my corn snake, but I like simple elegance just as much. I bought a hatchling last August of 2020. He is now 3 feet long and looks very much like this one in the video. What I wasn't ready for was the beautiful blue luster the snake takes on when in natural sunlight. What a beauty! This animal is very much beauty and beast. He's a big bruiser compared to my also beautiful corn snake. Much larger head, much thicker overall. Can't wait for another year or so when he's up to 5 feet or so. Thank you for the wonderful video.
Great video. These guys are said to be almost unkillable. Experienced breeders say that Schrenckii's endure not even colder but also hotter conditions when many local (and even tropical) species just die. We do have a harsh climate in Primorye. This makes them a good choce as the first pet snake for beginners.
What a beautiful snake! It was fun to see how much she was exploring (especially as you talked about them doing just that). It was also really interesting to see the comparison to the baby!
Just picked up a female hatchling at an expo this weekend after looking for over a year. I'd pretty much given up and figured I'd have to just get lucky finding a breeder online while they happened to have some available, but one table had three! So excited to see how she grows and what shade of yellow she ends up with. And apparently whether I got a true Russian or an Amur lol
Man you are appreciated, one of the most knowledgeable herp enthusiasts I’ve come across. Thank you for all your research for this and please please keep these species introductions coming!
Beautiful snake - great info. I kept trying to see the belly better - looks like an interesting patterning there, too. Honestly, it's the first time ever that I've seen a non-native (in USA Midwest) species that I really felt I wanted. Thanks!
A fantastic species and the one snake I am most sad that I jad to let go all those years ago. He was a skittish baby but never bitey. I am very tempted to get a pair to eventually keep outdoors. cheers
Hey Chas....IM SOLD !!!!! Where can I get one? Seriously. One of my top three snakes is our Eastern kingsnake. I've said to my snake friends many times that I just wished they get more girth and longer. I'm going to look out for breeders. Gotta have one. Great video, much information and I enjoy your way with him. I just can't believe any snake could live in typical Russia. I hunt and fish. What I think you'll find interesting as an animal person is did you know that the whitetail deer covers ALL of Canada and the U.S. and yet the heaviest, largest, biggest horn bucks come from British Columbia,Alberta,Manitoba,Saskatchewan? Where it's coldest, little food, longest winters....that's where the biggest bucks are.The state of Maine and upper Minnesota and Wisconsin. There is a scientific term for this,I forgot it but I'll look it up. It's where the deer have a specialized metabolism of converting food to fat/muscle. But that's a warm blooded mammal......is it possible this incredible process works for a cold blooded reptile too? Very interesting. I can tell you that our Black Ratsnake, Elaphe obsoleta, has a huge range here in the States, but the longest and girthiest black ratsnakes I've caught were from here in Pennsylvania in the mountains where the winters are harsh. I've heard New Englanders say the same. One would think that down south with hotter weather and sustainable winters, these snakes would easily outgrow our Northern black ratsnakes but that is not the case.
Perfect timing! Im about to get one of these, very few videos on them. Love it! One question I havn't found an answer for yet though: as pets (not for breeding) should they still be brumated? For how long/how cold?
I've brumated mine down to about 7° for 2.5 - 3.5 months, but my incubator/snake fridge doesn't really get below 9° anymore, they don't lose much weight. I could leave them longer, but I miss them! Also I had my first clutch after not brumating the male, even if this is not ideal.
I got a pr of adults after watching this video. They are super defensive and strike at the glass every time I walk past their cages. Both of them hate to be handled. Any advice? Bad breeder?
I am considering getting my first per snake and it is between a cornsnake or the Russian ratsnake. I can't pick! The Russian seems to fit me very well but the size is something to consider.
Very intersting video for me. I am getting 3 Elephe Schrenckii in summer hope. I do not have any breeding intentions. So is it still necessary to get them into a radical cooldown in winter then?
Simon,I have questions about wild caught snakes versus captive raised and that's one of my questions too. I can certainly understand that a wild caught specimen sold would be kept in accordance with its surroundings. However a Russian ratsnake raised from the egg here in the U.S. doesn't know the cruel Russian winters. Not having owned this species, the next question is if they are kept at regular room temps, 68 degrees or 70 throughout the winter, would they hibernate at all? That being said, would they refuse food or not? Good questions for some of those here or Chas.
Hi I'm not sure which snake would fit with the climate, here in Shanghai China, my coolest room is about 28-31 (with out AC on) during the summer, night time doesn't drop much below the day temps , outside temps can peak over 38 , could you recommend a species of rat snake /snake ,( I think rat snakes seem to be quite common here in China), I have a young corn snake but I think it maybe a little hot for it, any advice would be much appreciated, thanks
I purchased a Russian Rat from and online breeder, but it looks so close to an Eastern King snake. Is there a way I can determine which snake I actually purchased?
They always remind me of chain kingsnakes. The lampropeltis getula getula
Thank you for this species intro. series. It's great how you're so affectionate and gentle with your snakes. 😊

You will love this snake. I've had them in the past. Enjoy. This is your 2nd snake. Wot is or was your 3rd.

Thanks for sharing this video. I just got my first Russian Rat and am absolutely in love with it.
Hi....I'm sold.
Have 4 Eastern kingsnakes and 2 Outer Banks kings.
May I ask from whom did you get your little guy?
Are they readily available?
A real beauty. They’ll sure be hardy animals coming from such an extreme climate!
What a beautiful snake! It was fun to see how much she was exploring (especially as you talked about them doing just that). It was also really interesting to see the comparison to the baby!
Just wanted to say thanks for this.
Your enthusiasm has helped us decide that our second snake will be one of these.

Thanks for the advise guys! The little dude is all set up now, and wow no kidding what a friendly baby snake, practically climbs right into my hand.
excellent vid, awesome animal. however I have banned Cath from watching it.

Now that is a gorgeous snake, I think that should go on my list. This or woma python, or honduran milk? I can't decide, can you give me your thoughts?
I am considering getting my first per snake and it is between a cornsnake or the Russian ratsnake. I can't pick! The Russian seems to fit me very well but the size is something to consider.

your beard looks fuckin awesome
Have any suggestions on breeder of them in the states?
Can they live in a vertical enclosure?
I know this a bit older video, but I have a question. Is it necessary to brumate if you're not planning to breed?
Question for anyone. Do you HAVE to hibernate these beauties even if you don't plan on breeding??🙁

Seen your video on corn snakes, really fab should have seen it sooner,,, still interested in getting a rat snake , thanks
What’s the average size for a male assuming they’re smaller?
How difficult is it to get hold of one of these? Also, are they really expensive?
I'm a Chinese. It's very cheap in our country. It's only about 100 RMB. I don't know if it's expensive outside China
