in the whoop community the progress seems to be - buy one, then do a very minor repair (swap props?), then finally solder something, then dive into the full custybuild. Then your identity is locked as a pilot, you're part of the fam: you had a mentor, made some new friends in person and online, and you're stoked to teach the next homie. Love your channel man.

I have done the buy a BNF and fix it until i have damn near have made my drone 3x over. I don't regret it at all. It got me up in the air fast and now that i've been flying for about 5 months now i've been exposed to a bunch of trouble shooting and repairs that i now feel the want to finally build my own drone. Its been a slow burn but i now have all the tools/space needed to fix/build my own without spending all that money in one go and feeling like I'm in over my head.

Yeah but at a certain point I'd imagine you're essentially just building the drone from scratch if enough parts have broken, but I can see the benefits of having a fully functioning quad without having to figure out what uarts go were.

  • @lemonsquareFPV

    Option 3 is chill.
Especially with ELRSs model match and a switched VTX (in case either survives the crash). I can just crash and send up another quad immediately, without a care in the world. Just make sure to label the quads with model match numbers.
All you need is to have a crate of 168 quads automatically delivered biweekly, and you get a dozen a day to play with.
It's pretty chill. Whoever picks up what's left keeps it. Good way to keep the poor homies in the hobby for cheap.

When I do action shots, especially when I'm on a bike or snowmobile. I can't wear a backpack and just have 4 quads strapped to my chest rig. That way people don't have to wait for me and I can crash/abandon a quad and send the next one up within seconds using the technique described in the original post. The crew retrieves the crashed/landed quads after me, and brings me fresh ones.

I've only been flying for a few months. I came into the hobby through a BNF kit. It was amazing to be able to put sim time to real time quickly, but just like you said, first non-prop issue, I had to send it in for repairs. I thought they were doing me a favor by setting everything up for me, but I had no understanding of rates, modes, anything. BNF packs are great to get the flame lit, but I also imagine it's how a lot of new pilots burn out...paying someone else to do repairs or just buying a new quad.
Thanks man. You've been part of my entire journey

  • @AtradiesInc

It's so much cheaper to buy a bnf and mod it out.
I build bnf bind and fly drones. I have to say it's a whole lot easier and more appealing to break a drone and modify it to be on another frame. When you can repair it and work your way up to a build. You have a platform to go off of. My first modification was a dji fpv on a Armattan Rooster frame. It looked like a terminator drone. You know how much it is to buy all the parts to a rocket drone. Waaaay more than buying a geprc mark 4 10 in and modifying it to a rocket drone.

Learning to walk before you run is important, when I was first starting with my bnf I didn't take it to places that would break it. As parts break you learn in smaller steps to fix it until you feel comfortable enough to build one which could be a huge hurtle from the start not knowing if you even like flying

I think it’s a lot easier to fix a BNF than try to build your very first quad. At least getting a BNF you get to experience what a good quad flies like. Trying to build a well tuned drone without ever flying one is near impossible. Learn to build by rebuilding! I did.

One of my favorite drones is my THF2 with 3s... hits that magic spot of rippability and covertness. But to add to your points BNFs tend to cheap out in one way or another and also try to squeak in irritating attempts at proprietaryness. But it's all good, people should really just learn to solder. I fixed some leds yesterday that only stopped working because the power leads were soldered on too long, from the factory, so that when the usb twisted they touched each other. I'd change the title(not really) to, If you build your own drones you'll save money all over the place.

  • @oziumentisis
    @oziumentisis День тому

I would bet that at least 95% of FPV Pilots today wouldn't be in the hobby if it wasn't for BNF and Bardwell, at least initially. You watch it for the first time and go "Fuck, I wanna do that" so you go on a obsessive learning spree on how. Most start with a BNF whoop kit or an equivalent small quad and one of two things happen after their drone first breaks and they feel sick to their stomach when the dopamine turns into cortisol. They first look at it and go "Can I fix this?" after hitting the UA-cam, you quickly find out you have to buy all this prerequisite equipment in order to even diagnose it, it can be daunting so this is the first point we loose people. Like you said, if money isn't a thing then "fuck it, why not buy a shit ton". The ones who invest in the tools, the understanding, the community, they normally last. I've noticed too, that pilots who come out of nowhere and learn fast and hard and are killing it, tend to get bored of the hobby and quit earlier then the average pilot. I'm the guy you describe who does barrel rolls, god awful power loops, and drunken orbits with shitty throttle control all amongst parks, trees and fields (only because of my geography). I really wish the closest City worth flying (architecture. bandos) wasn't a 3 hours drive. It seriously blows but it is what it is. What matters to me is when I pull the goggles off with a huge smile and go "God motherfuckin dam that was fun!". Great video as always!

I bought a used BNF 3.5" cinewhoop first, then built my second. That was a good way for me - it got me in the air quickly to keep the stoke up, but made it apparent that I wanted to fly a 5" eventually. Maybe that'd be different if I flew more freestyle from the start.
Building is so intimidating for newbies. There's so many ways to mess up (including buying incompatible parts), and it's hard to find the right questions to ask. While at some point you just have to rip that bandaid off, it can definitely be demotivating at the start.

If repairing or building, or tinkering isn't your thing, and you don't have infinite money, then drones are going to be kinda frustrating. BNF is nice to get you started but yes, you're going to be working on your drone and no BNF can help someone avoid that. At least building your own you know the drone inside and out and can better diagnose the inevitable problems.
