Ray had Inner/Outer height set to 2 meters/5 meters respectively. I would have set 1.5 meters, and 2 meters in those tree canopies. Every time it went outer circle it was trying for 5 meter height, in spite of selecting "Allow Low Ground Height, you have to actually set the number you want separately in inner/outer circle height. Ray should know all this, I was hoping he would realize it. They have gotten MUCH better at subject re-acquisition, so we DO have some NEO code here.
@@BlairAir Thsoe are default settings, thus, typically how I test things. That said, the problem with changing inner/outer height is you've gotta constantly change it for difference scenarios. So basically, setting 1.5/2 for the first tree tunnel might work (though frankly, 2 meters should have been more than fine, the bottoms of those trees behind me was 3+ meters, easily another 1-2 meters above my head). But then, a moment later I need to change settings again because I've cleared trees. It just shouldn't be like that, I shouldn't have to constantly change those values. I appreciate the option for them, but I shouldn't *NEED* to change them to get viable stability.
@@DcrainmakerPoint taken, and I agree. A possible compromise would be a low inner circle height (2 meters?) and 5 meters for outer. Then just use inner, closer circle for the really tight stuff? Point is, 360 is cool, but it's far from perfect, and definitely prone to issues. Maybe add some presets, like manual cameras offer. Then you could set up a few scenarios, and quickly switch? I'm thinking, I'm thinking! 😂
As an avid cyclist and drone pilot, I was just waiting for the release of your video and I was not disappointed! Understandable, practical and honest as usual.
I respect anyone who spends a thousand bucks then actively tries to lose it as quickly as possible. Thanks for doing the tests we daren’t. Ps I received the my X1 Pro very early. Its amazing.
Well, I don’t care about the drone! I find it extremely entertaining you talk to the drone.. Have you thought about a stand-up comedy in front of an audience with a few drones flying around?
Cool video! One tip; besides enabling the near-ground flight option, all you had to do was reduce the Inner Height and Outer Height values right above it. They were set to 2m to 5m respectively. That is why the drone kept rising up.
Amazingly true reality Air3s field test! I enjoy that you're unfluffed experiences with the drone with your personality, putting the latest technology to the test. Great for the average drone enthusiasts consideration on whether it's a worthy purchase or drone upgrade endeavor.🎉 Well done, keep them reviews coming! Have ordered my Air3s, u/g from my ancient Mavic Pro, much appreciated. 👏
I flew my Air2S through a forest on active track almost 3 years ago and it never crashed. Avoided branches and everything perfectly. Fewer sensors, yet it still did amazing. Surprise by how this is doing.
Yours was the first review I looked for with this new drone. I’ve been checking your videos since I first got my Skydio. Unfortunately I’m very unimpressed by this 3s. I thought it would be hands above previous models and it seems to really struggle. Still doesn’t seem to be any better that the old Skydio, even after all these years. I have one coming tomorrow. I’m not sure I’m even going to open it. I’m thinking it’s going back and I’ll simply use a Neo for tight spaces and save my money. Thanks for helping me make my decision!
Can’t understand why on bigger drones DJI won’t simply switch to rear follow at low height and short distance when environment becomes too complex. If the subject is able to manage the route, then the drone can do it as well without issues. They did an amazing job from this point of view with the NEO with the only limitation of just 20km/h following speed . Among the drones I tested (mini 4, air3, mini3 pro), the NEO is by far the ‘smartest’. Of course it can’t do lateral or front tracking, but the results on the others are so disappointing it’s not worth the risk…
It looks like after 3 years there is not any improvement to the obstacle avoidance. I watched your videos of other DJI models, and it looks just like it. 😂
That was actually very impressive. Probably not really a real-world use case flying through dense undergrowth 🙂 but nevertheless, the new 3s did a great job. Thanks for the video 🤜
As always an excellent presentation, I even did a rewind to see that crash recovery part. You know if I had the money I’d head to the store tomorrow, I’ll just keep enjoying my Mini 4 Pro, which I swore I would not buy, but your video on that convinced me, no regrets, thanks for sharing
Awesome video, but i wish you did a less tree-focused night test. To really test the LIDAR in more urban scenarios. Of course they have trouble with tiny branches, but it would be nice to see if the LIDAR means it can do flawless building dodging at night as advertised.
I like your videos ! That is a really good test!! You will definitely more happier with a quad lock mount, get the universal sticky for the controller and the stand mount for the bike so nice and clean!! 😊😊
That was a lot of fun to watch. Some of the abilities it has are Skydio-like. Impressive to say the least. I need to upgrade from my First Gen Mavic Pro to this little Doll. Thanks for the in depth exercises in it's uses. I don't think I'd ever take it through thickets like this so mine would stand a better chance at survival! Enjoy your commentary too! An American in Holland? I'm of Dutch ancestry. Cool.
My favorite drone reviewer. Still a bit disappointed I didn’t see your review of the Avata 2-it was a big upgrade. But oh well, I got the Avata 2 anyway! 😄
I don't understand why DJI drones gain altitude when tracking. I start mine at an altitude that I know the drone will remain clear of the overgrowth and it invariably climbs until it crashes. DJI needs to fix the logic and use a way to constrain the altitude to a max of where you started it.
I think it's worth mentioning that when you're flying in the open field at 16:21, the screen recording UI indicates you're still in Normal Mode. Sport Mode would disable obstacle avoidance but increase the max speed to 75 km/h.
Thank you for sharing this video with us! The DJI Air 3S looks incredibly impressive, and I always enjoy watching your reviews. Really looking forward to seeing the wind test!
Comparing this to my original Mavic Air is night and day of course, but Active Track has work to do yet! I'd love a follow up mid-day with less wind as a best case but this is more impressive as you said!
Yeah, its really only slightly better than like the Mini 3 Pro.. I couldn't believe how bad some of the "better" more expensive drones like the Mavic 3 Pro do on these tests in the videos.. I have an Air 2s and it does the same thing as this Air 3s in this video, where it always wants to shoot up into the sky and be at like 40-50ft and maybe have you zoom-in on the subject instead idk. You can start it out low and hold the Throttle stick down while riding to keep it low, but no matter what you do it always ends up eventually up high in the ski if you let it do regular Active Track. Meanwhile my Mini 3 Pro isn't great or perfect either, but it at least works normally and how you would expect it to work. It gets great shots and i can just leave the RC1 controller in my sweatshirt as im riding. I have some videos on my UA-cam actually of me using the Mini 3 Pro to follow me on my EBike in a grass field and where it can keep up and/or continue tracking, as well as Tracking in Sport Mode to try and get it as fast as possible so it doesnt lose me so easily if i go faster or take off really fast. The reason i started trying the ActiveTrack on my Air 2s is because it has the same version of Activetrack and i figured with the almost 50mph top speed for tracking it would be a much better option, but it didnt work out so well and the footage was unusable.. I have to update the Drone and try it again to make sure but its not on an old FW version or anything.. Seems like the DJI Neo and a Mini 3 Pro are the best choices still lol. Just get the DJI Care refresh for them and thats all you would need realistically.. The Mini 3 Pro is now pretty cheap on DJI's refurbished section..
@@mxracingunlimitedltd7784 I think the object tracking should use the frequency signal system between the object and the drone because the object tracking by capturing the image of the object The camera angle may be obscured by other objects, causing the object to be unable to be tracked, and the response to movement commands will be slow.
IMHO the only drone to pass your gauntlet test is the Skydio. I think it's sad DJI still can't even come close to it's tracking capibilities. I do think the hover will perform better than the DJI drones for tracking, but not for image quality. Thank you for these gauntlet videos, i always check them out!
4:30 to be fair you didnt set it to go below 2m, the activetrack settings were still at 2m-7m, you just disabled the 2m lower limit but without setting the desired altitude lower.
But there was no reason to go above 2m to begin with. 2m was still the floor, and 2m would have put it at/below my head (on a bicycle). With plenty of space above still.
Surprised because Ray knows these drones. He had Inner/Outer height set to 2 meters/5 meters respectively. Even with "allow low ground flight - yoi still have to SET the height. He did not.
Fantastic video thank you! Do you believe that the camera quality video overall can be used for professional cinematic videography? Or the Mavic 3 pro is still too far, because I have heard that in certain circumntances this drone can be a better option.
Clearly fluid tracking at "normal" bike speeds is still a long way off. Looking forward to the Hover Pro reviews to see if they have upped their game...I've seen a couple of early vids that suggest their new optical tracking has improved quite a lot even if the beacon tech is still problematic. Thanks Ray :)
Well ive seen enough, sadly the ''Follow me drone'' is not that much improved with the lidar. (not that 3s IS a follow me drone, but i had more hope of follow me). Now I hope the neo 2 or pro will be good for tracking and sports one day
After a lot of videos with people just sitting and reading the specs of the Air 3S that I already know it’s great to see a proper test. But what is going on with the many interference messages? Will the drone perform even better away from windmills or whatever is causing the interference?

The final shot, how the video ends is superb!
Well, I don’t care about the drone!

Thanks for mentioning the beacon, everyone else left that out of their videos.

After a lot of videos with people just sitting and reading the specs of the Air 3S that I already know it’s great to see a proper test. But what is going on with the many interference messages? Will the drone perform even better away from windmills or whatever is causing the interference?
A DJI Insider needs to explain what 'environmental interference" is first. Is it electomagnetic? Obstacles? Environmental? what?
