At this point, discussing politics in any form of art is inescapable. Thanks to the internet, anyone can find any information they need, and just choose which band they're going to listen to due their political views. But it also gives the opportunity for anyone to troll, get angry, and try to ruin your reputation for whatever stupid reason, or feeling the need to put anyone into an agenda, even if they have no idea how to back up their reasoning for anything they say.
Negativity and hatred can be impactful for someone who doesn't know how to handle it, whether the attacks are intentional or not. We need more mature and level headed response videos like this!

It doesn’t help that there’s a whole culture of people on the internet who’s soul purpose is to ruin metal musicians lives over their political ideology. It makes me sick

    • @zachhall8043

And that’s honestly why I don’t even associate with people I know that are into the music, because I can’t discuss any band and the quality of their art without having to listen to what their ideologies are and how stupid they are and why I should listen to them and blah blah blah.

This is where it comes on how to handle situations like this, and just accept that eventually you'll come across people that try to cause harm. It really sucks though if it's out of your control, and haters and trolls end up winning.

That is a simpletons argument. We are not talking about how someone "thinks", we are talking about bands actively encouraging violence towards others and festivals like that shit in Ukraine that is literally used to get people to join their movement, as well as labels like WTC ran by actual Nazis. Enjoying music because you enjoy it is one thing, actively supporting people you KNOW are involved in some heinous shit is another. And before you even think about it, I use to rock a Thunderbolt shirt and still listen to Veles when the liberals get me riled up enough.
Enjoy what you want, but I can guarantee most of you as you get older will start to think twice about what bands/labels you support. I'm going to go listen to some GG now...

    Does no one remember motorhead?
What about the sex pistols? The Ramones? Napalm death? Black flag? D.R.I.? DEAD KENNEDYS?
Metal is supposed to be the antithesis of society, and the rules and laws they use to govern us with. Since the very inception of heavy music it's been that way. Hell it's been this way since goddamn Muddy Waters and fucking Elvis.
Just a few years ago jungle rot was stopped by the US government from releasing a music video because it would "incite dissention". Cannibal corpse is still banned from countries. Fucking TIPPER GORE.
Politics absolutely belongs in metal. It needs to be examined, and ridiculed as only this genre can do.

    “Metal is so political nowadays!”
Didn’t Black Sabbath make a Anti Vietnam/Antiwar song in early 70s?
With politics, I feel you really should enjoy media with different political messages, I can listen to a Billie Eilish song, then a Burzum song, watch an episode of Doctor Who and later read 12 rules for life of Jordan Peterson.
By not sticking to one political viewpoint, you can gain better understanding of the world.
And both Right and Left wingers are right on some points in my eyes.
Though sure, I may seek out bands with similar political messages to mine and enjoy them, but I don’t see myself stopping to listen to bands that have opposing messages, if I like their songs, find this close minded.

A lot of people like to cry about "keeping politics out of metal," only when an artist has political views they disagree with.
Freedom of expression is important, and everyone should be able to express their viewpoints as they wish in their artwork. Any sort of censorship in art always opens up a slippery-slope to more and more censorship in the long run.

I think one of the aspects of blackmetal music that makes it so magic is that blackmetal is not just music to be "entertained". (as you said it) Ask Jon Nodtvëit if he maked some music just to put it on your recordplayer to listen and be well "entertained". It is not just music, at least not for the artist. That is when the word "trve" get some sense. Black metal was about that from the beginning (at least of the second wave)

tbh I sometimes am made most uncomfortable by the politics I agree with in muisc. Whenever I listen to a song that is really really heavily preaching a political message I agree with, I feel like I am being pandered to and that makes me feel uncomfortable, I don't want the music I listen to to just reiterate things I already believe, but add to those ideas. Hearing a song that is all about how wars are bad because bleeeh is just kind of lame, I'd rather listen to something that provided a new perspective

I really dislike it when non political bands start suddenly pushing out their politics through their band name
For example, the dude behind violet cold just out of nowhere posted a extreme left antifa political post on his band page and also threw shit at the whole black metal genre (even though his music is blackgaze, a genre heavily inspired by black metal, funnily enough)
And the band Stallion who had a killer debut album chose to release a anti fascist album filled with your standard “we’re the good guys, we hate fascists!” type of shit as their next album
My opinion is that if your band isn’t politically focused, then don’t push out your political views through your band. I don’t care if they post their political shit on their private pages, as it’s their right to do so.

I personally love it when politics slip in different forms of art, not as serious activism, but as a provocation and way to experiment with different concepts and aesthetics, and the best is that you can be totally extreme in these experimental/provocative views from any side and not just from the right as people think it's the only place where a reaction can come from. The way some metal genres use politics as a gimmick and creative drive is one of the big reasons I enjoy them so much.

I'm of the opinion that art must express a philosophy. I think of philosophy as the thought process if that makes sense, and it manifests in things like art, politics, your way of life, etc. These "manifestations" all overlap from time to time, just as they're supposed to.
To create metal you need some thought, if that makes sense. Without that thought, nothing can be created.
But I agree, it's absolutely stupid when it becomes very preachy.

    I'm in two minds.
Metal should be about saying what you want. Thats the draw of it right? It has no boundaries.
However, I think certain genres in metal can lend themselves more to politics than others. I don't want to hear a black metal band writing albums about politics, because to me, Black metal should be about escapism and fantasy.
Death metal can lend itself more to politics and has, bands like Sepultura and Gorefest and Napalm death, but no-one listens to death metal for escapism, unless you want to go back into Roman times and listen to ADE.
What annoys me though is this new politically correct trend sweeping through metal. Metal was made to be offensive. I don't see how you can support political correctness, and then supporting a scene that has bands that sing about murder, rape, killing Christians, and then getting banned from certain countries.
Which leads me onto my next annoyance. I've had politically correct metal friends have a go at me , defriend me for when I condemned Islam, and Islamists during the terror attacks .
They didn't say a thing against the attacks on social media. I spoke about it, and got ganged up on. But I asked them, why is it you condemn me for saying stuff against Islam, or supporting some of the views from People like Tommy Robinson, yet you're quite happy to listen to and support bands that sing about killing Christians ? Its two faced.

Personally for me, I've always been very indifferent to the lyrics of a band _unless_ it really peeks my interest (Alcest, DsO, ect ect). And yeah, there are times where a band has shitty lyrics (GBK or Order of the Death's Head), but I tend to focus squarely on the music than anything else. I do at best consider myself apolitical, or at least center point and I'll admit I got shat on by leftists for disareeing with their obsessive posting on how the world sucks and shit like that, and I can guess you say I got shit on by right-wingers being center or simply disagreeing on _their_ high political soapboxes. Honestly I just wanna enjoy my entertainment in peace.
Also I found _all_ the metal skits to be so damn hilarious, also the last part over you pointing out how people can't even look at a silly metal skit and laugh at their own political side due to their (unironically) political views is similar to how things have gotten in the fandoms I'm in (seriously, for a fandom founded on 4chan, it's gotten borderline cringy over assuming everything is right-wing...).

My opinion on politics in metal lyrics is: Don't tell me what I should think, but make me think. And I guess your skits kind of accomplish that in a way. Life's to short to not be able to laugh at yourself.
I think you might have taken it a step too far with the racism in metal skits, however, I was not personally offended by it because I knew where you were coming from. • @RanterInShades
    @RanterInShades 4 роки тому +12

I'm with you on enjoying music for what it is. The way I see it, it should be less about a political message existing in the music, but rather about how well the idea is executed. That's why I'm able to enjoy artists like Rage Against the Machine, Rise Against, System of a Down, etc. despite being center-left. I only really draw the line when you're being preachy and/or dickish with your PR like what we saw with Chris Taylor Brown of Trapt (right) and Buddy Nielsen of Senses Fail (left), or if the music itself is just straight cringe like War On Women and the far-right equivalents that I'm sure exist. But other than that, I really don't think it's any use placing such hard emphasis on politics. Otherwise, you'll find yourself being black & white on everything and becoming super miserable as a result.

Even if you don’t support someone’s political views if you buy the merch and music of a fascist band you support them financially and give them a platform they‘ll most likely use to spread their ideology. Also I think it’s very weird that Antifa bands are being equated to straight up fascists. Yeah Antifa is annoying but at most they‘ll call you out for something online while fascists would beat your ass if they catch you alone. To me there will be always a difference in being frustrated with society and straight up hating other humans for something they can’t change like their skin color. That being said I’m not the guy to call someone a Nazi for listening to Burzum but I’d always advocate for streaming it illegally so at least you don’t support somebody with hateful views

Metal grew out of the 60s, so of course it's always been political (though interestingly, metal pioneers Blue Cheer sang a lot about being baked on psychedelics, but not politics). Anyway, I remember buying a GBK CD back in the 90s, and looking in the liner notes at the band photos, I laughed and thought, "Yeah, these guys would last 5 minutes in South-Central L.A.!" The music was cool, though. Metal's fair game when it comes to lyrics, so if somebody really offends you don't have to listen. Wow, that was easy!

I think overall that left leaning metal tends to turn out better than right leaning metal, not because of my own views, but because the viewpoint of "current society sucks so we should replace it with a better one" is just kinda more metal than "society is just fine as it is and we wouldn't have any problems if people stopped trying to change it."

I could go to a BLM function of Trump rally and know half the people in both camps, the sad thing is both sides are us as a whole. Our brothers and sisters, sons and daughters, uncle's, nephews and neighbors, co-workers, etc... The bottom line is destructive forces are intentionally creating false division between the masses and I won't be part of it. I won't give views, money or my attention to anything that goes against my beliefs. In the end I hope truth and justice prevails and I am falling back waiting patiently for the rest to see the light.

i think that it is a rhetorical tactic to describe racist or anti-racist music as "political" because racism is not a political ideology. one does not just have a difference of opinion with a racist; one does not try to sway a racist in the "marketplace of ideas" like you would an independent voter. Bands referenced in this video and otherwise that promote/support/lyrically endorse racism or other types of subjugation of a group of people or even genocide should not be the subject of a reasoned debate, because it is not a reasonable position to defend racism. A broader debate about whether their speech is protected? sure, we can have that, but even then there is no absolute right to speech so it's not like it should be taken as a given that, say, Arghoslent has a right for their music to be published by anyone. it is just as exhausting, if not more, to see someone twist themselves into knots to defend categorically unacceptable racism as it is to see Kim Kelly scrounge the bottom of the Bandcamp barrel for a shitty crust band because they happen to be anarcho-syndicalists.

Racism is political pretty much by definition. You can say that it's not something to be considered acceptable, reasonable, or debatable, and sure, I mostly agree, but whether something is political or not isn't defined by whether it's a reasonable or acceptable position - for something to be political it has to be something that is significant in having an effect on societal and/or interpersonal power relations, and racism fits within that so well I can't see how it wouldn't be political. On a more practical field, racism has been a core part of many political actions, positions and ideology over at least the last few centuries.

@@romanticegotist1 I understand, but if we say that racism isn't a part of politics, we risk letting racist, but well-established political forces get away with racism - that was what I meant, at least. I think we can argue against its acceptability and legitimacy without saying that it isn't political, when anyone could pick from a wide list of political racism and use that as a basis to say we don't know what we're talking about.

    Great video!
I very much agree that politics have been entwined with metal from the start, but not in the way it is now.
It used to be that bands would put politics into their music as an art form as you said, now musicians are using their bands as a platform to spout off about their politics without regard to the music. I can’t tell you how tiring it is to see otherwise talented bands preaching online about shit that doesn’t involve their art in any way only because they can get more attention than on their personal pages.
And it’s not only the bands, it’s the labels and venues too.
The ratio of “sides” is also absurdly tilted, I’m going to NSBM to get away from politics because they talk about it less at this point.
If it’s just in the music I don’t mind that much, I stand opposed to almost all modern left wing ideology but I can still jam out to old megadeth or something, I’ll just cringe at the lyrics.
On a personal note I think music is a spiritual pursuit so if a band can make something I find spiritually fulfilling I don’t care what politics are involved. A good example is that I’m “right wing” although I dislike the label yet I love Cascadian BM even though they’re all leftists.
Also please keep making these politic/music skits, I’m sure you’ll eventually piss me off but I look forward to it.

I don’t take offense to the critical jokes that go after my politics (from you, or anyone else) for various reasons, but particularly because they’re just caricature based on stereotypes and, well, there are people who agree with my politics that fit those tropes, and it’s meant to be a comedic caricature. Also, they’re going after certain individuals, or types of individuals, that have a certain ideology, rather than going after the actual ideology itself, and attacking any chore tenets of this or that aspect of it, so I really don’t get why people would take offense on these things…
Except.. unless… people who might actually kinda just fit the trope, and obviously think they’re correct to act as they do, so they’re naturally offended, because they feel personally attacked. I think it’s dumb, but that’s my guess.
Anyway, it’s unfortunate so many people are so soft about it (right wing, left wing, chicken wing), but not surprising..

Good points. Both far-left and far-right are two sides on the same coin. It seems like in this current landscape, there's less room for having civil discourse, and both sides are quick to go at each others' jugular. Rather than try to understand people with views that contradict their own, they adhere to these echo chambers -- especially in the social media age (this can also lead to impressionable people getting manipulated, and viewing the world through a black and white lens -- that goes for either side).
Also, it seems like people who go out of their way to cancel bands, want to have it both ways. If one believes in free speech (yes, I know not having freedom from criticism is a whole other thing 🙃), then surely it's better that anyone who's in the arts gets into some disciplined activity, instead of creating real life violence.
