This dude just materialized out of thin air after barely touching UA-cam and then uploading nothing for four years, then dropped this absolute banger out of nowhere
The percentage of the survivors to dead ratio puts your chances of survival in black mesa to about 20-30% which is considerably higher than what I was expecting.
That may be the survival rate for the initial incident, but the place still gets nuked afterwards. And those who made it out of Black Mesa still had to survive the 7 hour war and the combine rule.
@@dylanzlol7293 That would be like standing under a bridge in Hiroshima, the marginal gains in your mightily textured Blast Shadow outweighed by the whole Apocalyptic Death Sphere thing.
@@_Beamish maybe, but if you are the security guard guarding the entrance of Black Mesa, escaping would be easy, and maybe you'd be able to some of your nearby colleagues if you'd like.
I found 2 more scientists you can save in anomalous materials/unforeseen consequences. During anomalous materials, push one of the scientists into the doorway of the test chamber, holding the door open. Then, just when the resonance cascade occurs, stand in the entrance room with them. They don't die if you do this.
Update: It's really annoying and finnicky but you can bait the third scientist at the other end of the hallway leading to the test chamber into walking into the airlock, allowing him to be saved the same way as these two. I don't think it's possible to get any NPCs down the elevator, meaning these three are likely the only ones we can save.
Update again: Apparently sometimes there's a second scientist in that hallway. You can push both, but in my test run he wasn't there. I think he vanishes when you load the next map unless he's near the door or something?
always tried to protect/save as many guards and scientists as i could as a kid, mainly cuz seeing the scientist giving the guard cpr at the start really hit me back then
On my second playthrough I tried to get as many as I could and group them. The first grouping had 5 scientists and 4 security officers, and was in office complex just before the stairs to Van Buren's room. I left them a few grenades (since I hit the limit) and shot down the tripmine and grenaded the turret in "We've Got Hostiles", and I think it broke his AI. When I started shooting at the "12 dumbass scientists" guy and his buddy, their first reaction was to shoot the scientist, so I had to finish them off quickly. Unfortunately, in the second climb-up room, one of the grunts threw a grenade and killed one of the two scientists. I left the silo door scientist a shotgun (because I was full already) I failed to group them in Questionable Ethics because more HECU arrived and presumably shot some while I was missing, which was the reason why I always try to pair security guards with scientists.
In Office Complex, it's also possible to save Dr. Newell, the scientist dangling from the ceiling (just like the scientist at 8:30) in the flooded and electrified office. Easiest way to do this is, from outside the flooded office, throw a grenade inside the room such that the explosion will be close enough to damage the dangling scientist but _not_ kill him, quickly turn around and move away so that he's not rendered before the explosive detonates, and then simply wait for the grenade explosion to injure him. If done right, when you return, you'll find him alive and responsive, i.e. you can ask him to follow you. However, he'll still be partially embedded in the ceiling, which is just as well since you couldn't lead him past the office's locked door regardless. However, you'll likely want to turn off the light switch anyway to stop the water from being electrified and provide him with a safe escape whenever he decides to climb down.
Dude, I have to say: 1. It is incredible how you used your fantasy to create such a challenge and story behind and after your actions in the game; 2. This is almost a freaking study, because you put so much labor in it!
I'm so ashamed of myself to not watching this masterpiece before. You really cheered me up with the final message, I'm going through some tough stuff, and hearing something as motivational as the importance of living and hope even in the worst scenario, really helped me. Thank you

@@Saint_Jam Man, I love you for saying all this, a lot of people say "don't give up", etc. And it's being said so much, it just sounds like a cliché. But you managed to talk about it correctly, I'm filled with determination and emotions. You said "even if they die, it doesn't matter, because as long as they live at least a few hours longer, that gives humanity a tiny bit bigger chance to survive". I like this quote so much. Even if there is a 99% chance to die, as long as there is even the smallest chance to survive I must fight for it! No matter what it takes. As long as it's physically possible to try to survive, I will. I've got great respect for you.
Be it a marine from Halo, a random soldier from Call of Duty, or a simple security guard from Half-Life, they mean something to me. This is something I’ve wanted to do myself for a long while but I lacked the time and drive to do it. Pretty good. Now you gotta do the Black Mesa remake.
But in the black mesa remake i think that some of these saved people will be doomed to die since yknow the game has a different engine and some bugs from hl1 cant be done in black mesa remake.
My exact idealisms. I play Titanfall 2 and The Division a lot. Any time I see JTF or fellow agents in a jam, I’ll drop whatever I’m doing and run over and help them out. I’ll fend off the enemies and then fix them up all proper and such.
@@dominicesquivel3901 Personally I respect people in your line of work *more* than police. When's the last time you heard of a corrupt security guard? Like, I'm sure there's been and still are some real assholes, but not nearly on the same scale. So yeah, to you, Calhoun, and anybody else working security and actually protecting people, y'all got my respect.
Me as a little kid just couldn't bare leaving any of the scientists or security behind and would spend hours and hours trying to save as many of them as possible. I did the same thing when Black Mesa came out and am so happy to see positively how many could definitely be rescued. Amazing video man!
i have a question, in black mesa is it possible to save the guy at the end of on a rail? he'll ride the tram with you and hold off the marines while you raise the missile (i think thats what you do i forgot) but when you get back to him he's scripted to bleed out
This video was fun as hell. I love that you didn't stop with just _technically_ saving the guards and scientists, but also left behind lots of guns and ammo, and even made paths through dangerous places for them - like those boxes across the electrified pool of water, lol. You went the full mile. The whole thing is extremely silly, but in a good way.
Amazing work! I also like how you didn't just prevent the people's deaths but also made sure they had a route out and were armed too, and that ending part was amazingly written and really put into perspective why Gordon is so revered. I hope to see more videos like this soon!
This video really put into perspective just how much TRAUMA Gordon went through in such a short amount of time. This physicist who's probably never even been in a fight before witnesses so much death in such a short period of time... Since the entirety of HL1 and HL2 take place over the span of a few sleepless days for Freeman, I presume the only reason he's able to keep going is because he hasn't had time to stop and process any of it. He's basically still in shock.
Imagine how terrifying it must be for the scientist, all of a sudden, the power turns off and monster come in, one of your fates is a zombie while still being conscious and you ask for any help, and if you’re still alive, you would hear that soldiers are coming and when you see the H.E.C.U, You are almost relieved that help has arrived only to turn into horror, when you realise that they’re here to kill the scientist and if you couldn’t escape, you would just die from the Nuke
I think this is what we all felt when playing games when kid, I felt the exact same thing when playing Halo CE. There was lots of friendly marines you can save
I actually didn't realize how torn apart and even more chaotic Black Mesa had gotten until Surface Tension, I just played through it like, "Oh, yeah, so the military is trying to kill me. I'll fight back." I played Opposing Force again and saw all the damage left behind and finally realized just how destroyed the entire facility got.
That ending was immaculate! For the first time in years, I've felt the gravity of the situation in Black Mesa, and the actual, literal epicness of Half-Life, again! Sent chills down my spine, man, straight up. Just an absolute banger of a video.
Thank you so much! Honestly I'm glad people loved the ending! I honestly thought it might have been too much, but I'm glad it hit just the right spot 😋
29:10 For those who have not played Half-Life, it legitimately is not an option. The screen will fade to black and give you a game over if you explode a single thing. (Although it would explode everything anyway regardless)
@@dylanzlol7293 while some games just give you a scripted scene, or a cutscene where you cant save the npc (not that im saying it as a bad thing) i think it still might apply
this is canon freeman, imo i don't think they would be talking about gordon as highly as they do in hl2 if he didn't destroy like 10 helicopters to save the scientists
Tbf, the praise mostly comes from the fact that gordon freeman defeated the Nihilanth and freed the vortigaunts than from gordon freeman saving some random guys 20 in-universe years ago
It makes sense you save almost 70 personnel (it's my head canon anyway). Since "white forest"/ "black mesa east" was formed almost exclusively by survivors of the incident. With how built up both bases are (in hl2, etc.), and we see at least 60 ex-scientist and security in hl2 ep2 alone.
9:10 Even shooting the zombie once with the glock is enough to save the guard, since the moment you shoot that zombie, it forgets about the guard and tries to get you. This allows the security guard to take care of the zombie himself.
16:01 In the catwalk section with barnacles, you can use one of said barnacles to pull you up to the second floor. From there, you can clear the room of soldiers without having to snipe them since the scientists won't run to them until you hit the trigger which you would have to TRY to hit if you came in this way.
Insanely well-made video. Honestly it's so easy to get lost in the mechanics of the game that I've hardly even thought about the way the incident progressed beyond the simple "soldiers get pushed out eventually" thing.
This is one of my favourite videos, not only because you actually took the time to save as many scientists as possible, but because you actually had them in consideration did some minor things such as leaving the unused guns for them. That's so wholesome, and what I liked to do when playing it as a kid because I thought they would like to live too!
i absolutely love that the game has so many optional folks you can save without any bs morality systems to guide you. it's just so much more immersive and having the gaurds help you fight is often incentive enough to keep them alive. or you could just kill everyone and it be seen as killing them for ammo to survive yourself. but the game will never judge you for it, they're just other folks in the same boat as you. it's both more immersive and adds to the horror since they're often used to telegraph threats without having you die and need to backtrack. honestly playing the game for the first time i was surprised how much of a horror game it felt like in its opening chapters.
That kind of logistics with linking up all the different survivors into groups is what I always find my self doing at the end of the day when I'm replaying half-life. Also wow, I didn't know you can save the bleeding security guard reaching for the med station. Good to see someone summarise all the ways of saving and connecting everyone possible in a single video
36:25 - at the very least, 2 of them escaped. That one scientist alongside Eli in that room was Isaac Kleiner. Dr. Magnusson also was in sector C but we didn't get to save him, he just escaped even earlier. Also, the video is great! Love your determination and effort!
I like how you didn't just technically fulfill the challenge, but also went out of your way to increase the fighting odds of the saved Black Mesa employees after you've left. Fantastic video! By the way, are you planning to do similar videos for Opposing Force and Blue Shift?
i dont remember if i've left a comment here but just in case here's another one. i really respect the commitment to the rp in this video, i sometimes feel like speedrunners lose sight of the story in favor of the mechanics(this is my own implicit bias and i know im wrong esp with the evidence of ut speedrunners ruining a run by hugging asriel) but the fact that you leave guns for scientists and guards and remove obstacles just really makes this video. it becomes an actual story being told through gameplay and i love it so much
Clean editing, good audio, fun idea, great execution, excellent pacing, and a message of sincere hope in a world where nihilism is the norm and sincerity & hope are seen as cheesy. 10/10 Awesome video! Glad the algorithm picked it up, you deserve it.
As a person with an inherently nihilistic view on life, I completely agree with your sentiment. We should be hopeful and care for our fellow human beings; We are all we have. Peace and love.
Love the idea of saving as many friendly NPCs in games as possible. I've seen challenges for the Halo games for this, nice to see Half Life get the same treatment too. I also appreciate you adding lore or logical reasoning as to why you leave or bring NPCs to certain areas, like mentioning everybody groups together or gathers ammo and whatnot. Hope there's more series getting challenges like this.
I love how you make note that, despite everything possible going wrong, the Black Mesa personnel did everything in their power to resist the Xenian onslaught, the Marine incursion, the Race X intervention, and Black Ops interference, all while being severely outmanned, outgunned, and out of time. Like, seriously, none of the Security Guards we meet in the base game or expansions ever backed down from a fight, and were all still level-headed, and, despite everything, many of the Science Team members were surprisingly brave given the situation they were stuck in. Really gives perspective on why HL2's Resistance had so many Black Mesa personnel in leadership positions, despite very few of them likely having any sort of military or high executive experience.
Utterly unrelated, but the fanfic _Temporal Paradox, Or A Helping Hand?_ does a great job of portraying the Black Mesa personnel as nothing short of capable under crush-depth pressure.
Ya barney battled against xen head on at one point and some officers can be wrecking balls, that one guy in the opposing force stayed level headed even after getting shock and that one security guard promised to to cover him and died bravely, as for the scientist, I gotta say some are badass, that one scientist risk his life going into the center of a crash site and rescuing shepherd, or how lamda held their ground and secure an area in the facility
28:56 You can save the guard by throwing a grenade and running back, make sure the guard is not rendered 23:55 You can save him if you throw a grenade from start, he will stand up but he cant leave the room 14:57 You can also kill the "fking thing" by throwing a grenade into the vent and running away where the zombie wont render 13:26 You can also break the ladder guys animation with throwing a grenade and running away but he will just float And you can "save" the two scientists opening the test chambers doors by pushing one of them between the door Awesome work btw Also 22:30 what the scientist doin
0:18 I did this exact thing in a playthrough! Took some time but was worth it in the end. So many scientists, so many guards. 😅 I didn't realize there were more to save! I think I missed a few that you saved in different ways, either by animation canceling or bypassing death animations altogether. Really clever!
In Anomalous Materials, you can push the two retinal scanner scientists into the doorway of the test chamber, they will prevent the door from being closed and continue to exist after the resonance cascade effectively saving those two as well.
If I recall correctly, the scientist at 10:00 is supposed to run into the room he's next to and shut off the lights to hide as vorts hang out the doorway to ambush him and what you experienced may be an AI bug, but I also may be wrong and am just remembering key details incorrectly.
There are two scientists in that scene -- one of them always runs in and turns off the light as you're describing, but while it happens you can hear the other guy being killed by Vorts outside
Doing quick math with the 6 people who directly survived the incident compared to the natural 38 survivors it gives a ~16% survivor rate, putting those same odds with the 31 you saved means theres like 5 more survivors who couldve contributed to the rebellion, nearly doubling the BM staff for the rebellion, pretty cool
Gotta say, the editing here is amazing and the clips you showed were perfect. Especially the Demoman ones at the beginning and the clip of Gordan punching G-man, those were cool. And it's great to see just how far you will go to save everyone you can, especially on Blast Pit. That one was a roller-coaster and a half trying to save absolutely everyone there.
The amount of heart you put into saving every scientist and guard is so sweet, even clearing up any dangers and setting up safe areas. It reminds me of how I used to play and imagine the depth of the story. You are amazing at edits, and the passion for the game is really great.
Honestly: This is a shockingly well put together video for a rookie UA-camr! The editing jokes, and how silly they are, almost make me a little jealous honestly. Love it - Keep up the good work!
In case anyone's curious most of the tricks Jam uses to save folk still seem to work with the anniversary update. Rapidly spamming e on scientists to break their animation, entering office complex by activating the elevator from the outside, the whole quick save/load trick. The exception may be anything that requires grenade jumping since the update made grenade mechanics much more like 2 and black mesa.
This was a *very* interesting vid for me to watch because back in the late 90's I started writing a guide for saving the scientists myself (think a gamefaq style guide with screenshots - this was years before youtube remember). I didn't finish it because the content dropped off pretty hard in the latter part of the game (I stopped at Residue Processing I think) which would've made a written guide pretty boring, especially if someone were actually going to try follow it (which I started to feel was unrealistic). Still it was really nice to see someone run with the same idea and make an entertaining video out of it. Well done.
Fantastic work! Hope that more people watch this video because it's extremely underrated. And now you can officially call yourself *average scientist savior*
Dude i loved doing this kind of things as a kid! Making my own rules to play the game and sticking with them. Always coming up with little stories and lore to tie this together... Man, i still do this time to time, for me it's where the fun in games is! Anyone feels relatable? =D Great vid, man!
I would love a free-roam Black Mesa where everything is running properly and you can go everywhere you go in HL (with the scientists and guards alive of course) and see how it all operated before the resonance cascade
I really like your lore justifications for things sometimes - I love doing this even when I'm doing a bit of a gamey way to save people. Sure it's a video game and all, and they're all just numbers, but what's a bit of fun without imagining some of your own headcanons while playing?
This is how i've always played the game since day 1. I cant explain the ammount of quickloads i've done trying to save the scripted deaths, only to feel defeated and guilty that i couldnt pull it through. This video brings me new hope for future runs. Thank you.
As someone who's never played Half-Life but always feels bad for the friendly mooks that get killed in battle or scripted sequences, this is cathartic. Would be amazing if this could be done for other games.
I found the channel through the Dawn of War video, and seeing how many people were already dead or impossible for you to save made me realise how awful the situation actually is for black mesa. Therefore, it truly showed me how legendary Gordon is.
I really love Gordon Freeman's character. He wasn't born from some prophecy or bloodline, but was an ordinary man who rose to the occasion; and he became a legend and a hero
I watch lore videos, challenge videos, hidden facts videos, original artsy and meme sfm entertainment videos. Never thought I'd see all of that in one, guised as a "save the npc's" video. Bravo!

Goddamn. That was one of the best videos I have EVER seen. The ending hits deep and everything is a masterclass of effort. I salute you for making something my ADHD-riddled brain could watch all the way through without ever losing attention.
This is one of the best Half Life videos I’ve ever seen and I love how you went the extra mile in headcanoning escapes and justifying this whole challenge by bringing up how useful each Black Mesa survivor was in HL2.
You kinda answered few questions that bothered me as a kid and actually took this "knight in shining armor" approach that I was imagining back then. So thank you as well. )
Even after 9 months this is still one of the best Half-Life achievements ever let alone even on hard difficulty. The attention to detail by trying to save everyone is incredible and priceless. GG
Amazing work, this video. And what you said at the beginning actually got me thinking: Yeah, survivors of this incident do seem to pop up as important later. Maybe they had a lead on something that gave a huge advantage to the resistance. It would explain a lot, including how more people leaving that facility could only benefit people.
This is an excellent video! I love how much care you put into saving the NPCs in a way where they'll have escape routes and resources. I hope you get way more subscribers because of this video. Keep up the great work! :D
This was actually the best video I could have seen! I’ve been playing a blind play through recently, and I found it to be very exhilarating that you can actually save a few scientists
Seeing people play and talk about half life 1 brings me joy to my heart, and the fact that I see someone try their absolute best to save everyone is a an achievement on its own. You're a hero.
I'm surprised that there's only 7 videos on this channel. Seeing the Saving Every _____ series is neat, and it's making me think up other games where it'd be feasible to Save Every _____, like Company of Heroes 1 or Command & Conquer, because it's not quite enough for a simple deathless run, but also to save every ally possible. Looking forward to even more.

Really good find!
That makes 33 savable people in total

Same here, except I didn’t play the game for the first time until 2022.
Same here.
Same, that cpr moment game me a sense of life and responsibility
Same here
On my second playthrough I tried to get as many as I could and group them. I left the silo door scientist a shotgun (because I was full already)
I failed to group them in Questionable Ethics because more HECU arrived and presumably shot some while I was missing, which was the reason why I always try to pair security guards with scientists.
Thank you MarphitimusBlackimus.

9:10
Even shooting the zombie once with the glock is enough to save the guard, since the moment you shoot that zombie, it forgets about the guard and tries to get you. This allows the security guard to take care of the zombie himself.
16:01
In the catwalk section with barnacles, you can use one of said barnacles to pull you up to the second floor. From there, you can clear the room of soldiers without having to snipe them since the scientists won't run to them until you hit the trigger which you would have to TRY to hit if you came in this way.

YOU'RE THE DUDE WHO DOES VIDEOS

He did it. He achieved the dream we all had when first playing.
28:56 You can save the guard by throwing a grenade and running back, make sure the guard is not rendered
23:55 You can save him if you throw a grenade from start, he will stand up but he cant leave the room
14:57 You can also kill the "fking thing" by throwing a grenade into the vent and running away where the zombie wont render
13:26 You can also break the ladder guys animation with throwing a grenade and running away but he will just float
And you can "save" the two scientists opening the test chambers doors by pushing one of them between the door
Awesome work btw
Also 22:30 what the scientist doin
Even after 25 years and millions of videos I still find someone making a Half Life video worth watching.
0:18 I did this exact thing in a playthrough! Took some time but was worth it in the end. So many scientists, so many guards. 😅
I didn't realize there were more to save!
There are two scientists in that scene -- one of them always runs in and turns off the light as you're describing, but while it happens you can hear the other guy being killed by Vorts outside
hearing the casualty count throughout the game really puts into perspective just how much death there is in HL
