- That thing we all strived to do. Halo is one of, if not the best game created by the hands of man. An absolute classic from Bungie, playing as the green man slapping aliens in space.

I love this. I knew players would want to save marines. I remember watching a friend play T&R on a beta version and he felt so guilty when his marines died he kept starting the level over and over. It didn’t matter to him that the same marines would keep re-spawning, he took it seriously.
It wasn’t a game.
Oh damn, cheers Marty! The legend himself, thank you. Honestly I'm pleased to hear that even in the days of Halo's development, people would go to lengths to save the marines. But hey honestly, cheers for the comment Marty, I really appreciate it. I have great respect for you and the team for creating one of the best experiences in gaming.
I swear every big halo video, no matter what it is covering, has a comment by Marty O'Donnel. No one at 343 cares this much.
Marty! Now that Scumgie fired Salvatori you guys need to collaborate again!!
I feel like I lose apart of my soul each time someone kills the marines
Called it xD
Did you know Marty's the reason Johnson dies, too? If there's one thing the original dev team understood, it's that the only story that never ends is the infinite game we're all players in right now. All others must end. Like SaintJam monologues about at the end of this video. That's the paradox of corporate ownership of works of literature. Economics is an infinite game. But books, movies and video games by necessity need to have endings. These two forces are in constant tension.

You can actually find Marvin Mobuto's body. Right after getting off the elevator to the fourth floor, if you look left instead of right, there's a dead marine tucked in a corner, lying in a mixture of human and flood blood. 30:00 it's possible to save the 5 marines that are dropped by the pelican. It's just very hard and takes a long time. You need to do the skip where you safely jump off the bridge and get inside the Worthog and push the marines to the other side to the dirt path coming from the door. Then find a banshee and go back up to the bridge and play the level like normal. What makes you unqualified, exactly? Anyone can look through the games, scour them for information. See the old bungie vidocs, and read the old novels. After that, it's just colating the data, and then desgining a website, something easier than ever before these days with assistance to do it.
@Destroyer_V0 I struggle greatly due to mental illness as well as extreme executive disfunction. I literally cannot get my brain to function on that level long enough to even read a book, no matter how hard I try. Even audio books are a struggle.
Your way of handling the pillar of autumn is exactly the way Spartans would actually best work, Spartans are pretty much immune to small arms fire, and their notable strength and mass means them acting as a shield to the friendlies on board while being a scalpel against their enemies
Mechanized infantry are just better light-heavy tanks, this includes anything from Spartans to mechs.
@@trutwhut6550 there are tons of problems irl with the idea of using mechs/heavy infantry the same way tanks are used, but I mean, they are still cool as hell so why not?
Immune is quite a strong word here.
@@gustavoaraujopenha8463 not really, you can just use a large shield to protect smaller troops as a Gundam/titan for example, as a spartan or space marine you're able to move in first and repeatedly take light arms fire in place of your allies, they all can use far stronger weapons compared to normal soldiers while being just as mobile.
@@trutwhut6550 A shield would barelly cover any infantrymen behind it, only being usefull in buildings and maybe to move to one cover to other (Specially because the mech can bring it's own cover fire).
Small arms protection is much overvalued, a very small % of casualtyes in warfare scenarios are because of small arms, even during WWII only some 20% of casualties where from small arms and it was in an era where infantry did most of the jobs in battles, and the things that actually cause casualties nowadays probably would still disable a power armor/small mech. Most of the work in modern day for infantry is scouting and ambushing vehicles with HEAT projectiles (which does not need a big firing plataform to work), both don't have a big need for more armor and can even be rindered with the use of a complex machinery that would decrease stealth and reability while incresing operation costs.
More armor is always nice but the cost eficiency for power armor is debateble, we can already block most small arms with kevlar and ceramic armor but just don't invest a ton in armor because it's not that usefull. I think that maybe in smaller scale conflicts like ant-terrorism and other civilian security and law enforcement pratical uses for heavy infantry can appear if the cost is low enough, but till then it's most a cool sci fi concept with little expected real life use.

As a long time Halo fan from the beginning, this was truly a joy to watch. I loved your storytelling and how you mixed the lore into the gameplay, this is seriously one of the best halo related videos I've seen on UA-cam. Please do one for halo 2 next!
My favorite part was when Jimmy Rings looked directly at the camera and said "these are my master cheeks" and then slapped his own ham hocks for forty five uninterrupted minutes
This was phenomenal from start to end. I've never seen deeper lore of a universe so intertwined with gameplay commentary. It made it so much more interesting if you had just done a basic guide on saving every marine in CE with some shitposting sprinkled in there.
Read all the novels(till first 343 trilogy) and been a Halo fan for 20 year and never seen a video mesh the deep lore and a gameplay video so well. The insane challenge is just icing on the cake
its extremely refreshing to see a youtuber who has such a genuine love for what he does and to put in so many hours of hard work to provide entertainment for likeminded people.
he could have easily just made a guide on how to save all marines, cold, calculated and only there to achieve results but his combination of the lore, his love for the franchise and his drive to make high quality entertainment is truly astonishing for someone with such a low sub count. His work deserves far more than he currently has and I'd predict that in the next 12 months his channel is going to sky rocket to the level of TheActMan and others. Its less about saving halo and more of accepting its funeral.
that wiki line you quoted said the tv series was not part of core cannon with only certain elements being included
"with only certain elements being included", is silvertongue legalese for "we'll include TV series stuff into the wiki's core canon if we FEEL it's appropriate...or if Microsoft give$ u$ a rea$on to add certain element$ to the core canon".
I'm not buying it, this is obviously a bunk policy by design.
I firmly believe these writers/showrunners were never Halo fans and possibly never even played the games. All they had to do was retell the story of the games/add in backstory for side characters as they see fit.
The Halo show gave me the same sleazy vibes that Rings of Power did…though, I honestly am still more angry about Rings of Power (you just don’t do that sh*t to Tolkien’s world man). Made by people who think they can tell a better story than the source material.
@@I_enjoy_some_things Not only are you correct about that, not only did Microsoft intentionally looked for people who weren't fans of Halo to make the show, but the show runners and writers openly said how much they did not care about the games or the story of Halo and didn't so much as play a single game or read a single one of its books.
This isn't a secret, it was practically advertised as a 'good thing' that the people making the show didn't care about Halo in practically every news site that covered the TV show being released.
But even despite how everyone shat all over that tv show and how universally hated it was... it's still getting a season 2! Because god they need to kill Halo faster some how and I guess the first bullet to the back of the head wasn't enough so they decided to double tap the corpse.
@@I_enjoy_some_thingsthis is why i reject the legal/corporate owner theory of canonicity. Canon is determined by internal consistency, realism (eg lore that makes physical sense supersedes lore end that violates physics) and coherence with preexisting lore.
Oh my god saving those marines on truth and reconciliation is so nostalgic. I remember when i was a wee lad spending dozens of hours trying to save them. I found an area on one of the lower levels you could leave them at, rather than the closer one you found. Doing that or just playing co-op and leaving the chief they were following behind when you trigger the cut scene so they arent in the death room. There is also a way to save all the marines on silent cartographer. Dont remember how off the top of my head as its been well over a decade, but its definitely possible i remember encountering the same issue you did. I remember leaving the warthogs with marines in them all around the map looking for spots where they wouldnt die and what not. There is a place where they can be out of the hog and not die I no longer own halo or an xbox so i cant open it to refresh my memory. In guilty spark, there is also i think 2 marines you missed on a box somewhere that you can save through some means i dont remember.

And well done on saving the marines :)
Im suprised you didnt mention that the marines you save in "assault on the control room" are the same group of marines in "two betrayals" that you find infected without weapons one room just before you exit to the cold again 😮

Clicked on it thinking it will be a gameplay challenge but the way you presented it was incredible. Hats Off Soldier.
For all that 343 has done with Halo: within the constraints of the 343 canon, I feel that Creative Assembly did everything they could reasonably be expected to with regard to respecting both the series and the game they were following when they made Halo Wars 2. Especially with the threat they made of the Flood in Awakening the Nightmare.
And to be honest, while I also feel it's good that Bungie stopped at Reach... I think I might feel that for a different reason to you.
If Bungie as it was had felt that they had somewhere to go with the series, I'd welcome it.
But what Bungie is now... I don't know if they'd do much better than 343. I know Destiny is an apples to oranges comparison, but when you consider the state of it: showing content in pre-release trailers that was only released over a year later as DLC that people who bought the game at launch had to buy separately for the same price again, removing content such that new people can't experience several years' worth of the game and key characters are reduced to irrelevant footnotes...
I didn't grow up with Halo, the games of my childhood were games people ten to twenty years older than me grew up with, and the over-hyping Master Chief fanboys of my age group drove me away from any interest I might have had even if I'd ever had the opportunity to play one. But based on my eventual introduction to the series with Reach, and my experience these past few years with Halo Wars, and watching people's Halo content on youtube: I think I'd like games made by the *old* Bungie. I know I like games made and stories written by people honestly inspired by them.
I´m pretty sure that Bungie´s Halo 4 would include time travel - after all, in the 2009 encyclopedia it´s said that after decades no one ever found Master Chief after the events of Halo 3, and it looks like Bungie liked the idea of time travel.
i grew up with Halo 3 but only fully played until Halo 5G that got hate for no reason basicaly (well excluding scuffes launch and REQs but you get what meant) and i feel like he obliterated 343 for basicaly no reason at all
32:07 Fireteam Zulu probably never got that evac. In the very next room, when you come back through the area in Two Betrayals, you get ambushed by a group of exclusively human Flood combat forms. Sounds like they took cover inside and were watching the doors, not the vents.
Stop being such a blackpilled doomer. They got saved because uuuh beause I said so.
Wow... this brings me back to my childhood... I loaded checkpoints each time I lost a Marine, leaving them behind so they don't die. Staying alone on missions after giving them my best weapons so they can defend themselves waiting for evac. And all these details... added to the lore... you did an awesome and original work here. I watched all the serie in one day.
Keep this up ! You can''t imagine how badly I wanted to see someone doing this masterpiece.

The way you tell the story with the extended lore added in makes me want a Halo CE movie all the more
During the Pillar of Autumn section, I'm surprised you didn't mention the heroic efforts of Fireteam Raven, who managed to reactivate a section of point defence guns and destroy a significant amount of Covenant spacecraft, while also keeping the drop pod bays secure from the alien assault. They even run into the Master Chief as he boards the lifepod to escape to Halo.
Unfortunately, Fireteam Raven would not survive the Battle of Installation 04, making a desperate last stand against Covenant and Flood forces to buy the Chief as much time as possible to detonate the Pillar's reactor.
Edit: I seem to have caused a war in the reply section. I wouldn't go in there without a sealed combat suit, and I also wash my hands of that entire argument.
NOOOO!!!1!!1! That doesn't count. It was made under the evil 343 industries! 343 literally killed my wife and infant daughter
They completed their challenge of saving every Spartan they could. John, Avery, and Linda are (or were) alive thanks to them.
He's a bungie fanboy so he hates everything made after Reach
@@goombah8771you're obsessed
@@goombah8771I think Infinite singlehandely made this attitude completely reasonable because it strangled any goodwill peoplr had left for 343.
Love the deep cut lore mixed with a challenge run, it works so well
Quality edits, good long format videos, awesome roleplaying aspects such as taking their lives seriously. Unique fresh challenge run style AND funny memes/edit timing. All around perfect content in my opinion.
Love the video. I thought it was just going to be an interesting challenge video, but the way you weave in the lore and tie it in to why the challenge is important made the whole thing so much more enjoyable to watch. Truly appreciate the research and effort that went into this.
I love this series, like Pavlov and his dogs, I hear the background theme and I am conditioned to know that somewhere a man is being saved, enemy forces are being held back and the world will be a better place.
Your ending monologue on the state of Halo really hit home and was worded far better than what I could ever hope to express so thanks for including that
To me it just seemed like pointless, generic, hatred-fueled "Only my opinion matters, I deem this not real (insert here) because I don't tolerate those with different opinions." Junk I see everywhere these days.
"These are the only things that are canon" ok lmao
@@philosotree5876 i agree with you because if you dont like it dont fucking obliterate it to others
Tell that to most of the internet these days.@@ValuableBlueberry
@@philosotree5876I agree
This is hands-down one of the best halo videos I've ever seen. Keep up the good work! I would love to see a version of this for Halo 2 and 3.
This was a great video!
The storytelling mixed with the gameplay made this a lot of fun to watch and an impressive feat as well to save all you did!
Watching your content is identical to the feeling of sipping tea while wrapped in a blanket.
F for marine.
I love finding small channels with inexplicable production quality and enough memes slipped in to keep me on me toes. I look forward to this series continuing!
Man, hearing the recap at the intro reminds me why Halo was such a titan of the industry for a decade straight.
I love the extra lore attached to what you do. Makes everything so much more interesting and immersive
So glad you’re into this lil’ niche you’ve stumbled into.
It’s genuinely fantastic work. Hope it’s as fulfilling to make as it is to watch.
Saving those 3 marines in 343 Guilty Spark is one of the best feelings ever, especially when you're late and the Flood are already swarming them. Great video.
It was always painstakingly time-consuming because they had a single hp, but I leave no man behind
Your narration was genuinely top tier and the lore background expositions were amazing. Could've brought a tear to my eye
It's honestly criminal that this guy doesn't have more subscribers. The content you've been making is of incredibly high quality and I can't wait to see more of it
I love this series so much. It has a kind of good feeling that i rarely find on the internet
talking about the "untainted bungie lore" is really funny considering how much bungie DESPISED the books lmao.
They only didn’t like people who weren’t Bungie working on Halo but they did accept at least Nylund’s 3 as canon plus Contact Harvest written by Staten and in fact the reason why the Fall of Reach was so heavily retconned (other than the parts that were simply miscommunications between Bungie and Nylund like Elites and Hunters not showing up until 2552) by Halo Reach is because Frank O’Connor wrote most of the plot, also we can see that Bungie’s writers saved it from being Halo 5 tier
Greatest video I’ve ever seen.. when I played halo as a kid, I felt so sincere for the other teammates and tried to bound with them literally. Love this
Playing Halo at the tender age of 8 will be a moment I will never forget. I appreciate you taking the time to make this video. I enjoyed the whole hour. Have a new sub.
I have to say, because of your saving every scientist video I specifically decided to create a system about rewarding saving all characters in my game that I am currently working on because of your awesome videos!
YOOO Nice! Yeah I think that would be a wonderful idea, people get attached to characters and friendlies in games all the time, I think it would be really worth it. But hey, no matter what Good luck with your game man!
The TV show isn't canon. On a 343 blog it literally says it is a different timeline altogether. Called the Silver Timeline.
Doesn’t excuse the fact that it’s shit and still relies on prior knowledge from the “main” (only) timeline.
@@Slender_Man_186 of course it would? It is a Halo game so it would need to use knowledge from previous games. What are you saying?
@@Knight1029 since when tf is the Halo TV show a game? What?
@@Slender_Man_186 oh. I get you know. Your comment was confusing. I thought you were referring to Halo 4 and 5.
To answer your original question. The TV show isn't going to be as good in my eyes because it is inherently non-canon. I would have much preferred it if it was a well done canon TV show. But it doesn't mean it can't be good. The best way you can view it is thinking of it more as a show inspired by Halo and not Halo.
Halo: Combat Evolved. My first Halo game ever, this one fills me with nostalgia everytime I play it and your video bring that same vibe.
This game is such a masterpiece and a revolution in gaming history! Great video!!
Can’t understate how great this is, I always try to save as many marine as possible. Especially when infinite came out but always give up when the game starts getting hard and I keep dying. The amount of work you must have put in to this is insane. Can’t thank you enough Fr Fr.
Glad this is continuing. The marines will be remembered and saved. However Johnson is so badass he doesn't need to be saved until the books or Halo 3.
an interesting detail: in the Pillar of Autum, in the 2011 graphical overhaul (originally done by Bungie), some of the marines leading up the bridge who are dead and propped up against walls, are in fact animated as alive and injured. That adds about 5-7 more survivors.
Only three Marines in that armory were wounded, and thats been the case since the CE days.
I watched this with two friends today, we've all played the Halo games and read the books (a portion of them), and enjoyed it. One friend in particular who laments 343's bastardization the most of us said out loud "Its rare to find someone who ACTUALLY understands the series" and I could tell it meant a lot to see someone who really GETS it. Subbed!
Amen. Forerunners are ancient humans
I love how you play the game with lore in mind. Like eliminating as many enemies as possible even on missions where there's no marines to save. The idea being that this somehow helps the war effort even though it almost certainly has no effect on gameplay. I play games with that same mindset.
Honestly the commitment to the narrative of WHY you save everyone made this video. Incredible work!
3:25 "Helmed by the best officer in the navy" At the time, yes, but the best UNSC officer _ever_ was gigachad vice admiral Preston Cole - you know, the guy who made the Cole Protocol that Keyes references at the beginning of Halo: CE. Story with spoilers for Halo: Evolutions and Halo Wars: Genesis below:
For those unfamiliar with his story, he basically defeated the Covenant on every single sortie, often vastly outnumbered. The best is the one involving his disappearance, in which he led a battle group against a massively superior force (162 ships vs over 300 - sHiPmAstEr, tHeY OuTnumBeR us ThReE to oNe!). He split his force into two and hid behind a planet, attacking the Covenant from both sides as they approached. As they tried to regroup, a goddamn _Insurrectionist_ battle group led by gigachadette Lyrenne Castilla (technically his WIFE, a really epic story in its own right; she fought him 3 times, escaping twice and reaching a stalemate once; she was also the first ever to execute an in-atmosphere slipspace jump) arrived to reinforce and assblast the Covenant from the rear. They then withdrew into slipspace, presumably to avoid possible UNSC fire.
However, ANOTHER Covenant fleet numbering over 200 then entered from slipspace to reinforce. Cole ordered the rest of his fleet to fall back, while he went full speed towards the gas giant, Viperidae, TAUNTING the Covenant the entire way, saying how he kicked their ass and calling their religion dumb. The Covie fleet, enraged by his taunts, ignored the rest of his ships and chased after him alone. He flew so close to Viperidae that the electromagnetic field made the Covenant plasma-based weapons unable to accurately hit his ship. As he circled in orbit, he fired all of his nukes (a hundred) into the planet, causing all of the gas to spontaneously undergo nuclear fusion. The Covenant fleet was utterly obliterated.
But it doesn't end there. The best part is he ALMOST CERTAINLY SURVIVED. An ONI investigation after the battle believes he planned a stunt of this kind the whole time: before the battle he had requested a total transfer of personnel on board his ship, the Everest, presumably to ensure he had only his best and most trustworthly loyalists on board; he had consulted the Reach super-AI network on how to make a slipspace jump from a gas giant identical to Viperidae; and he probably used a derelict ship he requisitioned, the Io, as a decoy that he detonated to disguise his slipspace jump (the second-ever in-atmosphere jump) after he nuked the planet. The ONI report concludes that he is probably now living retired as a farmer with his wife and their child on a remote colony planet. You can't not be happy for them.
Though they also got pretty lucky - Capt. Keyes, Miranda and Johnson were all really badass in their own right, but didn't get nearly as fortunate an ending. The writers of Halo really knew how to tug at the heartstrings...
Oh 100%, I think Preston Cole is actually the real hero and legend within Halo. I'd honestly say he's the equal with Master Chief, both of them have been instrumental in saving Mankind. Just yeah by the end of the 27 year war, Captain Keyes was the last, best officer they had on hand
@@Saint_Jam For sure! But it's honestly hard to measure after a point because everyone is so interconnected. Halsey and Cortana are up there too (though not officers as such?), but there are for sure situations where they wouldn't have made it without more help, like obviously getting off of Reach without the assistance of Noble team. Same for Johnson and Arbiter helping Chief, or Ms Castilla/Mrs Cole helping Preston. It's hard to quantify, and probably shouldn't be, at least not too much!
One of the things that is most awesome about Halo's storytelling is how the odds are always stacked against humanity, but time and time again you get to see small acts of heroism and moments of genius that make a huge difference. Keyes had many of such moments, and went down incredibly bravely.
Anyway great video dude, really inspired stuff, can't wait to see your Halo 2 playthrough!
Cole didnt defeat the covenant while outnumbered very often. In halo evolutions it says that cole averaged 3 UNSC ships for every covenant ship destroyed. He also preferred to retreat whenever his forces had similar or less ships than the covenant.
Wonderful message at the end there. It's a perspective that I haven't heard often enough, and it's the same situation with Star Wars, Dragonball, Call of Duty, etc. Where I dont consider any of the new stuff canon. When the original writers and creators are gone, and the characters we know and love are gone, re-written to the point we wouldn't even recognize them anymore if not for their name and appearance, the soul of it is dead. Reviving any of these franchises, Halo included, is nothing more than necromancy with our childhoods. Greed has no grace, no respect. Even for the dead.
This was just perfect! I hope you keep doing it for the next 2!
How in the world did you make a challenge run into a full on lore video? You're amazing!
The way this video is presented is very very unique and special, it’s not just an entertaining challenge video it’s a lore lesson as well. And the ending speech was masterful, it put into words what Halo fans from the beginning have been feeling for years
Me and my dad played Halo a ton when I was younger, and we actually triggered some of the glitches that kept Marines alive. Of course we had no idea at all how we did it, but every so often we would spend an upwards of 20 minutes on missions trying to get the Marines stuck in the right spots to avoid them dying. We weren't always successful but when we were we were estatic.
Love your recaps of the lore around the game, and the editing you have put into the video. Awesome work man. Can't wait to see more!
Truly a beautiful video, and loved your speech about the series at the end. You put into words what I've felt for so long. These games and books will always hold a special place in my heart and I doubt I will ever stop coming back to replay the originals on MCC. Thank you for this
Halo 2 is going to be an interesting one! I used to do something like this when I was younger trying to save everyone. Brought back so much memories!
It’s crazy because I imagine half the episode will just be. “So hang back in this room and let the enemies come to you.” Or: “Rush forward in front of your ally’s and kill all the enemies as soon as possible.” But I know it’ll be even more than that. Especially the setup of saving all the non-heretical Covenant on the Arbiter’s missions, telling their side of the story. Only to finally merge in Halo 3. What a lovely way to experience Halo all over again.
Halo 2 will absolutely be the hardest
A true hero.
Your channel is the pinnacle of Humanity.
Bro, I can't explain how much I love this video. It isn't just some list explaining how you did it with some loud voice. It's a very thorough walk through, along side lore and tidbits one wouldn't get without reading the books. This is an amazing format.
Lovley video, love the memes dropped in and the lore in between missions.
