-- note from future me: I think, in some ways, I was a little naïve when I made this video, about differences in culture. I just wanted to make a video about things that I had been surprised about, but I think in many cases, I did not understand the entire picture. Please grant me grace.
-- side note: MANY APOLOGIES about the music choice. many, many, numerous apologies. I thought it was fine, but some people have been getting annoyed by it. I acknowledge this & will be mindful of such things in the future, but there is nothing I can do about it at this point. Elle est choqué parce que la caissière ne range pas ses courses mdr, j'ai l'impression de vivre dans un pays d'assisté mais là bas sa a l'air pire.

Essayez plutôt d'inverser le problème. Vous arrivez à la caisse, et la caissière met les affaires dans les sacs. Je suis prête à parier que beaucoup (moi y compris) penseraient "Hein?! pourquoi elle fait ça ? Merci, c'est gentil mais je sais ranger un sac de courses", en d'autres termes vous seriez choqué. Petit choc, ça n'a blessé personne, mais choc quand même.

Aux US ce qui m'a le plus choqué c'est que les articles sont mis dans pleins de sacs en plastique!! Genre 3 articles max par sac! A la fin tu te retrouves avec 15 sacs!! Ç'est pas très ecolo je trouves
Les actus : il fallait en profiter pour demander pourquoi dans les séries/films US ont voit toujours de beaux sacs en papier marron, comme nous pour les fruits ;-)
Ben sinon, pour la petite etudiante, j'espère qu'on l'a pas trop choquée avec nos bises ! Dans certains coins, c'est 3 ou 4 ! Et la bise allemande claque bien plus fort que la notre, nous, limite, on effleure les joues
lol moi je suis aveyronnais et chez moi c'est 3 bises du coup quand je suis allé dans ma famille vers nice et que mon cousin me présentait des amis à lui j'allais faire la bise sauf que là-bas c'est 2 je me sentais trop mal à l'aise lorsque j'allais pour faire la troisième
It's crazy that american people think everybody in France is smoking... I'm french and i hate smoke too... Yes its sometimes easier to meet people when you smoke... You just have to go out , where all smokers are and ask for a fire, and bingo, you can begin a talk... But, personnaly i never smoked and i never felt like isolated...
Hmmm but you're right a lot of people smoke... That's sad and annoying... However, thanks to the policy against tobaco, prices are growing up, and more and more persons are quiting... for the best...
AlX6S Ahah , for "la bise" , you're absolutely right ^^... I would not even think that it could cause a trouble ^^... That's a bit strange if im wondering a bit ... lol Yes... When we're like 10-13 years, there is a period of time where we're a bit awckward and unconfortable with it... But you know it's not rude to do " la bise" to only your friends and do a general "hello" with your hand... Some people only check hands ... But you're right between people of the same age , it's better to do "the bise"...

About smiling.. You're right , and its not because of the city where you're living... In France, it's pretty rare that people smile to a unknown person when they speak with it... Mostly in a shop! In the "real life", particularly if you're foreigner, people will answser you with a great smile in general... We like american, english speakers... But its better if the person you speak with know the tanguage ^^

+AlX6S Le cliché est quand-même basé sur un fait, les français sont les plus gros fumeurs d'Europe, assez loin devant les deuxièmes. Tu as un peu d'une personne sur trois qui fume en France, ce qui est énorme ! Et étant donné qu'ils n'ont plus le droit de fumer à l'intérieur (et merci pour ça), quand tu marches dans la rue, et bien évidemment, tu as cette impression que tout le monde fume. En tout cas, trop de monde, ça c'est un fait.
Ce que je n'aime pas trop avec les américains, c'est qu'en plus de n'avoir aucune culture générale sur les autres pays les entourant, ils sont choqués d'un rien. Comment tu peux être stressée d'aller faire les courses ? Je suis allée à Londres récemment, bhein tu t'adaptes à la culture et tu fais pas ta sainte nitouche à chaque coin de rue...

Ce que je dis est parfaitement fondé et je ne suis pas la seule à le pense, c'est pas "typiquement" français. Je pars du principe que lorsque tu pars dans un pays en échange, tu t'adaptes et tu fais pas ton choqué devant tout ce que tu vois de différent, c'est très malpoli la façon dont elle a de dire genre "c'est pas normal ce qu'ils font"
Non non t'es typiquement dans le commentaire useless a la française... Assume toi il y a rien de mal c'est ce qui fait qu'on est detesté sur la terre entiere. Elle fait une putin de video difference between son pays et la france, pays où elle a etudié, bordel il y a rien de mal j'aurais fait la meme a sa place. Et le mot choqué est plus a prendre en terme de culture shock. Bref ça sert a rien de parler avc toi, je supporte plus les gens comme toi ... Je supporte plus ce pays en regle general j'espere vite me casser d'ici pendant que j'ai encore 21 ans. Gros bisoux, et pete un bon gros coup... Pck au final c'est ton premier commentaire qui etait insultant.

Les français sont loin d'être détesté par le monde entier, si tu sortais de chez toi et que t'allais visiter le monde tu le saurais. J'emploie le mot "choquer" parce que c'est ce qu'elle est, elle est choquée pour rien du tout. Si tu ne supporte plus ton pays et bien vas-t'en, personne ne te regretteras vu ton attitude ;)

Tu prends le plus grand Leclerc que tu as vu dans ta vie, tu peux te dire que c'est environ 1/8 d'un vrai supermarché au US x)

Alors que vue qu'ils ont beaucoup plus de place, ils en ont un peu partout aux US.
Après c'est que par rapport à son expérience, elle n'est pas allez partout en france non plus.
Hello, I'm french and I want to correct some things.
Firstable, grouping of people behind the entrance of a university is probably particular to your university, it's not something frequent.
Then, smoke is very spread in university by young people but not much by adults. Be careful of generalities, for example I've never smoke and my life, my family too, a lot of my friends too... it's depend of socials middles and socials educations.
The act of "faire la bise" is a french specificity but you are not forced to do, you easily can shaking hands.
Moreover, the brand "Monoprix" is famous to sell expensive products, if you want to buy prolo product, it's better to go LIDL, Netto or Leclerc.
To conclude, I don't think cases you present are really cultural shocks.

VlamonZob ce n'est pas à vous de dire si ce sont des chocs culturels. Elles les a vécus ainsi, et, même si ça vous a paru étrange, vous pouvez au moins respecter ses sentiments.
Demandez aux japonais qui font des crises de panique quand ils comprennent que tout n'est pas rose dans la ville lumière s'ils ne vivent pas un choc culturel ...

c'est comme ça devant bcp d'universités... et que tu le veuilles ou non les français fument, c'est ce que tous les étrangers remarquent donc prend pas ton cas pour une généralité, surtout que le fait de fumer n'a rien à voir avec le milieu social dont on provient.
+VlamonZob Franchement? Ce qu'elle dit sur sa fac, c'est vrai. Dans toutes les facs que j'ai été c'est pareil. Faire la bise aux gens, comme vous dites, c'est spécifique à la France, donc c'est la culture française, donc c'et un choc pour un étranger. Même moi quand suis arrivé en France j'avais pas l'habitude, même de juste serrer la main avec mes potes c'était bizarre. Et Monoprix est plus cher habituellement parce qu'ils se situent dans les villes, et ce sont des plus petits magasins que les grands supermarchés type Inter ou Auchan.

I'm french, so there is my opinions about the various subjets you talked about :
- Smoking : I thought it was a social thing in America too ? oo I'm surprised.
- La bise : Don't worry, there are also french people who are inconfortable with the bise ! I only do the bise with people I really like and a little bit with friends of a friend, otherwise, I shake hand. It's surprising for a girl, because it's mostly a "man" thing but I don't care. I don't like doing the bise to people I don't really know so...
When you talked about the supermarket and french not smiling... Ok I'm assume you are in Paris right ? ;b Parisians don't smile, for sure, but in the tiny city, or in the village, people smile too. Ok, maybe not as much as the american who always looks like really cheerful, but still ;)
About the supermarket : I hate that moment when you have to bring your basket back, it's really uncomfortable in little supermarket, but well... There is no other choice right ?

+Resosphere it's true. (Parisians are bitches but she was in Aix) I need to say that not everyone goes to monoprix for groceries shopping, it's small and expensive as said in your video. BIG supermarkets are outside the centre town so it isnt easy without a car :) Glad you liked France tho ! Experienced the culture shock in the USA as well ;)

+Resosphere Kisses when greeting is quite usual across the world, although it depends on where you are how many kisses you need to do. I'm from the Netherlands and we do three kisses when we greet someone. However, in my experience the most kisses trumps the lesser kisses. Like, every time I go to Paris I always do three kisses even though I believe they normally do two in Paris and that region but I also met someone from Corsica and she did five kisses so everyone just went along with that. I think it is because it's easier to just go alon with another kiss than to be awkward and go "NOPE!" and refuse another kiss.

Ah ah yeah totally ! In France, we usually do 2 kiss but there is part of France where you do only 1, or 3, and even 4 ! I can't tell wich region, but I've meet people doing thoses many times. It's always a little awkward but funny moment like "Oh 3 ? Ok" and we kiss X3
The bags are not free since few years in supermarket.Before it was like majority of countries,it was free.They changed because of pollution,but im not sure

Y'a juste les magasins de vêtements, de nourriture (où ils te servent) ou des trucs qui sont pas français comme Hema où ils rangent tes affaires dans des sacs qu'ils fournissent. Du moins c'est comme ça en Ile-de-France, ça peut être différent suivant où t'habites.

Ha ha it must be so awkward to do the "bise" for non-French people! I can realize that now. But you don't want to do it "everytime", for example if you are meeting someone for a job interview, and even when you are hired, you should wait a few days before doing it with your co-workers, an maybe NEVER with your boss. But yeah, when meeting friends of your friends or things like that, it's the bise.
***** Also we do not do the bise to people we don't know unless they are accompanied by someone you know (not in a formal situation though). In that case you only say "bonjour" or make an handshake. Concerning the bise from men to men it is quite rare and you only do that to close friends, but that is not systematic, it depends on the person.
Indeed you can do a handshake and maybe someone will say: "Oh, we can do the bise!" so you know this person is OK with that. But you must avoid it if you are not sure, and you really want to do a handshake if you are not sure, because it can be very poorly looked upon if you attempt doing a bise to someone you shouldn't (as I said your boss, some of your co-workers, your doctor, your boyfriend's parents depending on how strict they are with the "not the bise the first times" thing...).
A handshake instead of bise is never a mistake, maybe someone will say "oh you don't do the bise?" then you just say "oh sorry I wasn't sure I could", and that's OK. But a bise instead of a handshake can be considered impolite (I mean like if you said "Hi bro!" to your teacher).
Plus if you are sick, you must not do the bise and even not a handshake, just say "hi, sorry I'm sick!" and do a sign.
And one more thing... Sometimes even a handshake is too much. I suppose it's the same in the US, but you want to wait for the other person to give you them hand so you know they're OK. Some bosses don't want to shake hands, and you don't want to give a handshake when you go to a doctor, depending on the doctor (once again wait for them to give you a clue).
Yup he's right, I didn't mention that but man-to-man bise is only with family or very close friends (I do it with only one friend guy that I know for twenty years, and it's still a bit strange to me). Wait, when we are drunk, we do it too.
Tchongy so it's a very formal ritual, nothing erotical contrary to what some americans imagine!

C'est pas vraiment des stéréotypes... Les français fument en effet plus qu'aux US ou au Canada, ce qu'elle raconte sur les supermarchés est en effet vrai, ici, la plupart du temps, tu as quelqu'un qui emballe tes affaires etc. La bise est également typiquement française, ça ne se fait pas en amérique. Donc tu peux appeler ça des stéréotypes si tu veux, mais ça n'en demeure pas moins des choses que tu ne retrouves pas sur d'autres continents...
Tu a parler (justifier) 3 chose sur tout ce quel a décrit... bon jpense que ton résonnement est un peu périmé

Really nice to see people speaking the real french. I try to do the same for english. You shouldn't go ib my class, because they have an awful accent. Some of us are too scared, because of the assholes who laugh at you.

Super vidéo, au passage je suis française et je ne fume pas ! et je ne fumerais jamais car je ne supporte pas la fumée de cigarette ^^. C'est très étrange de regarder ta vision de ce que tu as pu voir en France, à force on ne s'en rend pas compte mais c'était cool de voir les différences entre la France et les Etats-Unis.

+Mélissa Snow Rah oui, ce jour béni où la clope à été interdite dans les bars et restos! j'avais l'impression de bouffer des cendres sérieux! Pis moi si je passe 2 min dans un endroit où ça fume c'est mort mes cheveux puent et j'ai plus qu'à les laver. L'horreur. Si demain ça redevenait autorisé, je le sentirais passer!

+Mary P. En fait, si la loi avait été respectée avant, on n'aurait pas eu besoin de faire chier les fumeurs (dont je fais partie) en interdisant la clope. On aurait obligé les établissements à respecter la loi et à autoriser de fumer uniquement dans les salles fumeurs, qui devaient selon la loi être fermées, et ventilées. C'était ça, qui était choquant. Pas le fait de pouvoir fumer.
***** Oui clairement :( Mais je me souviens d'un restaurant où on allait avec la famille quand j'étais petite. Une seule pièce. Et pourtant, coin fumeur obligatoire. Les restaurateurs avaient mis un filet de pècheur pour faire une démarcation, faute de mieux... Tout le monde n'avait pas la possibilité de le faire. Enfin après c'est un détail ça, un cas particulier, parce que je suis d'accord avec toi :)

La bise est aussi quelque chose que nous faisons ici, au Québec (Canada). Nous n'avons pas seulement la même langue que nos cousins français, mais aussi les mêmes habitudes haha ;)
Auchan and Carrefour are WAY bigger than the biggest Walmart I have seen here
They have everything from groceries like a lot of groceries to books, tires, clothes

Les étudiants étrangers restent cantonnés en ville et ne vont pas trop dans les gros centres en dehors des villes.

I studied abroad in Aix this past Spring semester! I actually freaked out a little when I saw that you studied there because the windows in my bedroom at my homestay looked a lot like the ones behind you!
i'm french and when i was student, i used to have american erasmus students as good friends. when i was listening to you and your explanations, i was thinking of them very hard and all our good moments, and i tried to remember if they said something about your culture shock experiences... i really laughed because i just remembered how they do the "bise" in the first moments and made me feelling something strange but never really got what ! x) then, i didn't read anything on your page, and as you were talking on my screen, lot of images of our student town came in my mind and... "your monoprix" appeared !!! cours mirabeau !!! i recognized it immediatly and i laughed so hard !!! it was mine also there was 10-15 years ago (it doesn't change as i can see in your video !!! rez de chaussée was the same !!!). what a coincidence ! all your words make me create images of my past in this place and it is also the place you are talking about ! thank you for sharing your experience, and thank you for those good past moments with my american friends i was able to rememeber listening to you ! i click on "s'abonner" to your channel and i ll follow your adventures in Aix now ;) and your explanations are very interesting in a "sociological way" too !! (i learnt sociology in aix "lettres, arts et sciences humaines" university ^^)
Hi ! You are right, Monoprix isn't really a supermarket, it's more like a convenience store, a really small overpriced one. It's very practical when you live nearby and you just need something real quick, but people don't actually shop there.... which explains the tiny baskets. However, we do have actual supermarkets, Carrefour, Auchan, Cora, Leclerc... which are much bigger, but still very small compared to what you are used to, I guess

most french supermarkets are ridiculously large, there are supermarché (smaller) and hypermarché (massive). I guess you've been going to a smaller in town shop,where most french people will go to Auchan/ Carrefour etc. for their main shop, they are usually at the edge of town

Je suis française et je me sens un peu insultée par la vidéo. En fait, c'est pas que je me sente insultée, c'est juste que cette fille est un peu une chochotte quand même. Elle parle de "choc des cultures" pour un contact entre joues et parce qu'elle doit mettre elle même les produits qu'elle achète dans un sac plastique PAYANT en plus ?! Hi Rachel, just came across this video of yours, it's great. I've lived almost 8 years in Canada, and Quebec sounds a lot more like what you described (the bise, smoke, charged bags, less smiley and stuff like that) while the rest of Canada is much more like the U.S. in many ways. I'm Mexican so it didn't quite feel the cultural shock as you did, but I'm just so thankful to hear your impressions. I wouldn't have felt the same way as you did, yet I so loved hearing you. "Monoprix" is a brand of supermakets you can find in city-centers only, that's why it's more expensive and smaller (they don't have big stocks). If you want to find some bigger and cheaper supermakets, you have to go outside the town, and then you have Leclerc, Auchan, Carrefour, Casino etc... :)
Yeah that's the problem with France: you can't easily get cheap prices unless you have a way to move outside ahah (yeah don't buy stuff in small Casinos, you can only find those shitty triangle sandwiches ahah)
***** the supermarkets inside Paris borders are small because big ones are not legal. There is a special law for Paris about that topic to not hurt the small shops. You will find big ones (hyper-market, much bigger than supermakets) on the city border, at Bercy for exemple.
C'est très intéressant d'avoir ton avis là dessus ! C'est des choses qu'on fait par habitude et on ne se rend pas compte à quel point ça peut être étrange vu de l’extérieur (le pire ça doit être pour la "bise", c'est effectivement assez bizarre quand on y réfléchit). Pour le fait de sourire, c'est dommage qu'on ne le fasse pas assez en France. Il faut qu'on travaille là dessus =D

Pretty nice video ! I'm french and I can tell you that I went on exchange in Canada (not the same as america but almost) and I had the most akward situation greeting the students at school for the first time because I had no idea what to do XD
And also I find french people really don't smile enough... I've always been a smiley person, always smiling so I think it's sad that french people don't smile back at me when I smile to them :(

I've been living in Paris for 5 years and having to bag everything in the super market by myself is always so pressuring!
The cashiers only take 5 secs to scan everything and you'll be there fumbling trying to put everything in a bag which take longer time

I'm French and I don't "do the bise" with strangers it's weird xD I don't know why American people think that we "do the bise" with everyone ^^ I just do that with my friends and family! And sometimes I don't even do it with my friends xD And if I'm in a place where there are 20 people I don't do the bise with everyone it would take me 1 hour xD I just smile and they smile me back, it's okay

People that I met where so happy to see me (I joined my boyfriend who already knew these people) that hug me a lot and I never knew how to react in front of this
The same thing for supermarkets I was so impressed it's so huge and when I was looking for something to eat it was really difficult
American and Canadian people are really welcoming and smiling I have great souvenirs from my vacations

For the basket I don't understand : usually I put my basket anywhere and I don't care (maybe because I'm not very civil). For the paying plastic bag, this is quite new. And soon they will disappear. Agree with you, we have to much smokers here, I hate smoke, I hate cigarette, I'll never smoke too and here smokers don't respect non-smokers at all.
About Monoprix, yes it's a bit expensive and it's not a real supermarket. Real supermarket are usually outside of towns and much biggers, with "Caddies" (huge things to buy stuff). We also have larger ones, called "Hypermarket". :)

About the supermarket, I think the basket are that small because most of people used to go shopping, once in the week for exemple, in bigger supermarkets witch are on the outskirts of town. Also, you're totally right about the checking out process, it's also making me feel really unconfortable too.

Je suis d'accord avec le commentaire précédent et j'ajouterais que les plus grands chocs culturel se trouvent dans les détails.
ex: En Corée la quasi totalité des gens n'ont pas d'odeur corporelle lorsqu'elles transpirent, par conséquent il sera extrêmement compliqué de trouver un déodorant efficace.
Toujours en Corée, le geste pour dire à quelqu'un de venir (en France, la main vers le haut) est une insulte.
Ce sont des détails, certes, mais auxquels il n'est pas forcément facile de s'adapter.
De plus, parler d'expérience sans recul est incorrecte puisqu'elle le dit elle-même, elle s'adapte, elle est moins gênée, elle voit le charme dans ces habitudes, chose qu'il est impossible de faire sans recul

And about smiling, yes it depend where u are ;), but it has never been a problem for me to smile ahah, it also depend of who is in front of u, but yes in California everybodies was smiling, its transmit the good mood ^^.
But it really depend about with who are u talking and where u are.

Monoprix is overpriced ^^ Casino, carrefour, lidl, leader price and franprix are less expensive (especially lidl and leader price)

I'm going to France this January and I have zero clues about what to do there. like, I'll be studying but I mean life. like... when you got there, what was the first thing you did? did somebody pick you up at the airport or did you have to get home by yourself? also, what about the first grocery shopping? like, how much do things like shampoo or soap cost there? did you find the brands you used at home? everybody keeps talking about the grading and educative system, and tho that's important nobody tells me anything about real life

Une vidéo assez amusante, bon en ce qui concerne les supermarchés on a beaucoup plus grand que les monoprix. Pour la bise, ce n'est pas systématique ce n'est pas vrai, lorsque l'on rencontre une femme pour la 1ere fois on se serre la main, apres tout dépend du contexte, si quelqu'un te présente sa copine souvent celle ci te fera la bise, si une femme ne veut pas faire la bise elle va le faire savoir en tendant la main directement...c'est un peu compliqué c'est vrai, il m'est arrivé de serrer la main et faire la bise dans la foulée, mais ici ça n'a rien de génant. Ce qui me dérange en revanche c'est quand des hommes se font la bise, pour moi à un autre homme je lui serre la main à part si c'est quelqu'un de ma famille...!
Quand aux fumeurs, il y en a mais tout le monde ne fume pas loin de la, personnellement je ne fume pas et je n'aime pas ça !
