I just remember how ahead of their time they were and I don't think the group were appreciated for what became a wave of what was then being called "Alternative". When "Stay" was on radio it was on the charts with Vanilla Ice and thought God help us...I hope the Music Historians give "Sister's" the credit due...👍💯❤️

    • @johntonelli5930
      @johntonelli5930 3 роки тому +5

Hmmm. When you look at them they really only wrote one classic hit and then delivered alot of more formulaic forgettable singles. The Bananarama connection didn't give them much alternative cred at the time - and they looked like posers. Consider Concrete Blonde and Siouxsie Sioux were already doing this exact thing - only better. All of that doesn't matter now, but back then it might have really prevented them from being more of a staple of the era.

    • @Hellwyck

I don't believe Shakespears Sister was considered alternative when bands like Faith No More and Mazzy Star did it much more obviously.

Walking through the rooms in my head
    I came across your image
You looked at me with that sweet smile and said
Something they won't let me repeat
We hurt the ones we love the most
It's a subtle form of compliment
I don't care if you talk about me
I don't care if you write it out in stone
Whenever I fall I land on my feet
    I don't care, I just don't care
Mark the spot you hate with an x
Then shoot your bow and arrow
Do your worst get it all off your chest
I'll hold my breath and swallow
We hurt the ones we love the most
It's a subtle form of discipline
I don't care if you talk about me
I don't care if you write it out in stone
Whenever I fall I land on my feet
    I don't care, I just don't care
I don't care if you act like a queen
I don't care if you take it out on me
I've got 9 lives and I land on my feet
    I don't care, I just don't care
Out of the alley, I spoke came Victoria
Queen Victoria sitting shocked upon the rocking horse
Of a wave said to the laureate
This minx a course as sharp as any lynx
And blacker deeper than the drinks
    As any hottentot without remorse
For the lynx said she and the drinks you can see
Are hot as any hottentot and not the goods for me
Hot as any hottentot and not the goods for me
I don't care if you talk about me
I don't care if you write it out in stone
Whenever I fall I land on my feet
    I don't care, I just don't care
I don't care if you act like a queen
I don't care if you take it out on me
I've got 9 lives and I land on my feet

I've been obsessed with the quoting of Edith Sitwell's "Hornpipe." How did this wind up in your hands, how long have you been smitten with her work and who brought it to the song ... and how did you decide to incorporate it? I learned a lot about etymology of the word just from this song. I learned a lot just from this song, actually.

This is from the early 90s when music was still good.

      Basically you've just said
"I'm too lazy to listen to anything except mainstream autotuned pop stations so I assume all modern music is the same".
      Well done.

@@Hellwyck Wrong, starting around 1986 I used to listen on Sunday mornings on 91FM's Rick D's top 40 countdown and the music was good. Fast-forward to 1993 I noticed that the music being played was turning to crap and by 1995 it was ALL rubbish so I stopped listening regularly. There have of course been a few good singers since then with some good songs but most of what I've is mass-produced commercial rubbish by talentless "Singers" recruited by record companies to sing mass-produced nonsense to fill a niche identified by their marketing departments.

I hated it if when she left Bananarama, but their voices together in Shakespeare's was uniquely awesome.

Their vocals compliment each other so much, such a shame they broke up, imagine where they would be now.

Clearly Marcella Detroit's voice is off the chain great in everything she does, but I think people sleep on Siobhan Fahey, whose voice is a perfect counterpoint to Marcella. They complement each other so well.
