    There's always someone saying that practicing something will ruin your voice or injure you, or at least be bad for you. Don't listen to them. It's not about what you practice. It is about HOW you practice! If you want to learn how to sing a certain way, don't let fear keep you from your pursuit. Press in mindfully, carefully and with the long view in sight!

    "Don't let fear keep you from unlocking things and having new experiences with your voice, and embracing possibility as you make mistakes" Some of the best advice I've ever heard

    I was told by my vocal coach that you actually can damage your voice so hard it becomes irreparable.

    • @repit5014
      @repit5014 2 роки тому +29

      You can. If you record a metal album then go on tour for a month screaming every other day for two hours pushing through the pain, without slowly building technique and stamina before
      But probably not by trying stuff and taking a break when it feels uncomfortable.

    • @emkstr
      @emkstr 11 місяців тому +7

      Generally it requires a lot of repetition of bad technique to do that. Your vocal apparatus is fairly resilient and heals with rest (and sometimes anti-inflammatories depending on the injury), but it's like any other body part in that it can get overuse/repetition injuries. If you continue to practice poor technique, then yeah, you may lose it for good.

      Only if you overdo bad things. I did a really dumb method to get some gritty vocals two days in a row. My voice was out for a week, falsetto and cord closure on false cord screams were... Not good for that week. So I gave it a rest.
      Voice came back and I went from a C#5 to an E5 now.

    Inhaling constantly wrecked my voice for AGES. I lost so much range from both ends. You can achieve the same sound without inhaling. Sure, you can get higher inhales, but it isn't worth it.

    • @chrisliepe
      @chrisliepe  2 роки тому

      Moderation :) Inhales are like hard liquor. Easy does it... A little is enough :)

    • @mikejenkins4924
      @mikejenkins4924 2 роки тому

      @@chrisliepe That is the thing. There was no moderation. The inhale screams just sounded a lot more powerful and I could go lower or higher with little effort. This is why it is dangerous, because it becomes a crutch. Doing hour to two hour shows every weekend for a few years...yeah. I had to quit the band and have only now just got my voice back to how it was years later.
      This is why I say that it is better to just learn how to exhale scream.

    Great advice. I'm going through exactly the process you describe and I'm quite worried whether I'm doing it right. The fear of damaging one's voice is real but you have to find out what you can do with your voice.

    After attempting to learn how to false cord scream my mixed voice range has become very scratchy, weak and breathy. After realizing this I’ve taken it very easy on my voice the past few weeks just doing warm ups and singing within my baritone range, which feels fine, however it feels as if I’ve now lost that mixed range part of my voice.
    Kinda scared since I finally just began to sing again after mostly recovering from long term diagnosed Muscle Tension Dysphonia. 🙁

    • @TDefHipHop
      @TDefHipHop 2 роки тому

      @@chrisliepe Yes I’ve been seeing a speech therapist bi-weekly and doing recommended exercises. She told me to incorporate singing, but maybe I got too excited. I just hope I didn’t overdo it with the false cord practice…

    When you're first learning you're definitely gonna cause your voice some (hopefully minor) damage, just make sure you're trying new approaches and taking breaks when you start to feel strain.

    Here, here! Well said!
    There are particularly well loved singers of great renown whose voices went through dodgy patches. Everybody talks about them singing too hard, or using the wrong technique, but those who have payed attention to interviews, and the timelines of careers, will have noticed that most dodgy patches seem to come after periods of professional inactivity, and are also frequently associated with alcohol/substance abuse.
    The worst thing you can do for your voice as a singer, is to not sing.

  • @nisem0no
    @nisem0no 2 роки тому +1

    Agreed. So many people say not to do breathy singing, for example, but it's safe if done correctly and without discomfort.

    Real talk dude like anyone can be the one to find a better way to do a technique. Starting out techniques had to be created and perfected by somehow. And for inhale screams? Dude I've been doing those since I was 14 and I'm 28 and they sound just as demonic as they did if not more than when i started. Honestly i just learned to think of it as a hiccup where you assign certain areas to clench at different levels. And my high inhales can go full banshee shriek. As far as those specifically? Ive got all sorts of tricks. But most importantly? Your mind is your limit.

      well i can give you an example: Matt Heafy of Trivium lost his voice from screaming in a manner that was overly taxing. instead of giving up on screaming entirely, he learned a better way to achieve the sound live without overworking his voice. he took a break from scream vocals but then he eventually brought it back no big deal
