You are correct, Nick. My daughter (15) has been recently introduced to twisted metal 2,3,4,SB and Black. She can't stand tm2. She prefers tm4 and tmblack.
TM2 is the best game in the series because at the time there was nothing like it. It was dark like RE. This was the first game in which you got to drive different types of vehicles unlike other games where you were only allowed to use a different version of the same car. The game didn't age well because the physics were broken beyond belief. However, if this game gets a remake there is no doubt it will be great.
I prefer TM4 because the controls were more refined and the maps were better. There were also a wider array of cool weapons. The endings sucked, but they are such a small part of the game anyways so it literally doesn't matter.
@@itsame9647 You don't understand my point. Games like RE and Twisted Metal took a huge gamble. People back then weren't ready for this level of violence. It was so bad that the stories were removed in some places. TM2 was revolutionary. It sold more copies than all the twisted metal games combined. this was back in the day when Piracy was at its highest, so we don't really know how many copies this game really sold. TM3 and TM4 are more playable than TM2, but remember those games came later when the technology was only getting better. TM2 came out early in the days when people were still trying to figure out how a game should look like. It would be like compering RE 1 to RE 4 and be like I Think RE 4 is the best in the series because the controls are better. RE1 is the best game in the series because it was the beginning of the horror genre in video games. The creators took a huge risk and it paid off.

I would personally say Twisted Metal Black was my favorite for its pace and darker tone. However I greatly enjoy TM 2 even nowadays. Second favorite in the series.
That Gameshark code that allows you to face Minion as a regular enemy on every tournament level turns the game into a nightmare... He is so relentless, especially in Paris and Hong Kong.
Playing as him however, you're unstoppable (unless Slam or Grimm freeze you to death...).
I remember my Uncle scaring the piss out of me with Minion when I was 8. Then he became one of my favorites in the series, strange isn't it?
Can't wait to release my Twisted Metal videos, damn shame the first video is taking so damn long with my nightly work schedule!
I can tell you had some fun with this game like half the time. I still can’t understand giving someone Black that’s new to TM. They would be stuck on the first level and get pissed off at it.
From first hand experience my IRL friends all preferred Black compared to TM2, 3, and 4 when I let them try them out for the first time!

Just wanted to say thank you for the content!
At first I was confused why you don't like TM2. I'm from Russia. Me and my friends discovered this game in the first half of 00's. It was tough times, few people had PS1 but TM2 was one of those games from childhood. We simply didn't know better and had a blast playing it. Now I know that it was broken but then we just had fun. Hell It's been years since I discovered that TM2 wasn't the last game in the series, it just went off my radar.
Fast forward to now when I discovered your channel. Despite me "being blind with nostalgia" (lol) Im so happy that there are people who still play this game despite it being what it is with all it's flaws.
Anyway thank you again, I'm going through your videos right now catching up to what I've missed in this great franchise.

Conclusion: TM2 is not Nick's favorite TM game
Minion was very fun to play as in here, his special would recharge rather quickly, and if you ran out you could just use the full special bar for an extra one (anyone can perform this). his handling is amazing, ram damage is amazing, yet still not as good as Axel's somehow lmao, speed is great, and very durable lol.
i have to agree, TM2 was by far my least favorite, i started off with 3 and 4, but doing a playthrough with TM1 and 2, i can say i actually had fun with TM1. yea, TM1 had its problems, but it wasn't anywhere as bad as TM2. TM2 does have great characters and a great OST, but good lord, the glitches and Ai make it unbearable lmao.

If the original team worked with 989 and didn’t just let them do whatever, 3 and 4 could have had the best gameplay and worlds. The 989 studios games are definitely better playing experience than 1 and 2…even if 3 is clunky, it’s still easier than 2 lol
Putting my two cents out there even though nobody asked for it; TM2 has the best endings of any of the TM games. Calypso is at his peak of 'grinning charlatan' here. The idea of the 'monkey paw' that he goes with just has never been the same since. Some of the endings are a little odd, sure, but look at TM2 and then look at TM3 where Calypso is a cartoon villain and all of the characters wish for completely inane things that don't make sense.
Speed & handling of Grimm, armour of Slamm, ram damage of Axel. Dude is a menace.

If a new TM game ever happens, they should make minion a secret/unlockable char with the worst handling, but to be able to move the turret and aim with the right stick. Could be broken but would be a completely different gameplay to add variety.

3:30 I mean, I never grew up with these games and TM2 is one of my favs personally, it's very flawed and lacks some polish but still I find it to be very fun, all the PSX TMs are very flawed in different ways but do other things so well that depending on what you're able to overlook / get used to you'll love and hate the others
TM2 - unfair A.I., fast cars with sluggish / slippery handling, super bouncy physics, hard to hit enemies but very satisfying, cars have smooth suspension kinda, they feel almost like boats on wheels but not handling so bad it's unplayable, using combos (freeze, rear attack, shields etc) seem more important in this game than in others
TM4 - really stupid A.I. that goes for health too often (imo), slower cars with twitchy handling (cars will snap left and right, which feels hard to control for me, it's even worse with analog sticks enabled [disabled by default normally]), cars flip around and get fucked up by driving off edges a lot, flipping over is not nearly as bad as people make it out to be but is still out of place in a TM game, cars have no suspension (like hotwheels toys kinda), TM3 seems to have similar but worse problems
Both games suffer from vehicles not being able to navigate bumpy terrain or ramps imo (TM2 cars bounce around too much and TM4 flip and twitch around a lot), I like using the handbreak to turn 180 in both games (TM2 cars slide and drift in a satisfying way, TM4 spins around pretty nice and smooth feeling compared to normal turning, but TM2 lets you turn while sitting still but 4 doesn't seem to as far as I can remember), I think both these have some of the best maps in the PSX TMs, I prefer the tone and presentation in TM2 but TM4's lack of groundedness allows for more creative maps
TL;DR: Rogue Trip 2012 is the best TM game
5:50 as a newcomer, all the PSX games kinda sucked for me my first time playing except Small Brawl (TMB and HO were the ones that got me into the games), I hated the bouncy slippery physics of 2 and the handling of 3 and 4, but after playing them more I got used to them, 3 and 4 were easier but I don't like how they feel, even tho TM2 has completely unfair moments that do drag the game down for me, I just find it more fun feeling ig, everything feels like it has weight, but I might totally be in the minority

Would you be interested in playing other TM-inspired/adjacent games for PSX/PS2/XBox/etc? I always loved Star Wars: Demolition as a child, and there are other games like Critical Depth that use a similar formula, but for instance that game is set underwater in submarines. I have no idea how many of these games there are out there, but it might be something to look into to give you broader horizons to explore.

And so this series comes to an end. Shame you didn't end up liking this game a bit more but it's understandable. I have nostalgia for it since its one of the first games I ever played as a whole, but going back to it now as an adult I can agree that aspects of it are odd at best and bad at worst.
Hopefully something happens to really revitalize the series. The show was a great start but we need something more. I don't think they would do it but maybe we can get 3, 4 and Small Brawl onto the ps4/5 via ps plus.

Yeah I hear you on twisted metal being quite busted and flawed and many ways, even now I love the game, but tm head on really is like tm2 but better in some ways, and a bit more balanced, so I'll say it I like tm head on a bit more.

PS1 version is garbage. PC version is actually controllable.
