Tyranids are kinda the worst enemy the Tau have to face. Close Melee specialist that are so cheap and numerous they overwhelm the ranged mastery of the Tau. Basically 'Zerg 'em to death. "They're everywhere. Then shoot everywhere. It's not enough!"
I think on the contrary, tau are one of the best counter to nids.
To fight nids most effectively you have to do several things :
1) Adopt your weapons and tactics to shifting battlefield. Nids will shift their own tactics and switch units constantly, and even have capacity to increase defense against certain attacks (at the expanse of more biomass or weakness against other type of attacks).
The Tau definitely are the most flexible race when it comes to switching tactics and weaponry on the fly, even during a single battle.
2) Stay mobile, never engage in melee, retreat in orderly manner when you are about to be overwhelmed and get to a preplanned position to shoot from. The Tau are extremely mobile, they never entrench to fight to the last man on a single position unlike say the imperial guard. Instead, they constantly retreat (but rarely rout) and takes minimum casualties as a result. The only thing that really threaten them is getting encircled with no way out, in which case the Tau would be slaughtered much faster than any other faction, but that's the thing : Tau retreat before encirclement is even possible. And while they do, they keep shooting.
It's true, nids are fast and mobile so they can counter some of Tau's own mobility and it happend in the lore, but they've got an harder time doing it, not to mention for nids it's harder to produce specialist unit that can fly or go at high speed than it is to mass produce simple gaunts, so its always a cost analysis.

They generally counter the Tau as one point 4 Riptide suits incinerated a hive ship in orbit and just straight up deleting it, plus Tau use mobility and a fuck ton of drones and air support.
