This is the second home in which ua-cam.com/users/postUgkx0jZ_lGlDVJhDnmagEU8gn47cmfPNlLQU we've replaced our "regular" doorbell with a Ring video doorbell and we really enjoy it. It is very easy to install and it works very well, with a clear picture through the app and good in-home use (we added the chime, which is also easy to install and doesn't require another thought to use).
Great video. Thank you so much for not adding music and splash screens, to pretend that you are a Hollywood movie star, like so many other UA-cam tutorials. Just good info, given to us plain and simple, like we need it.
Great !! thanks for the Big help, I saw like 20 videos and they are all confusing, but yours was very simple and understandable, now I installed the dorbell in my house, Thanks again.
Excellent and easy to understand video! That is the kind of video we need on UA-cam, simple, easy, and straight to the point. Thank you for making the video.
Great video. I did the same thing but using an existing intercom system from a 1960s home, that wire which is doorbell gauge wiring , I put in place of the intercom speaker at the front door with the ring doorbell in its place.
@@gasparma2316 the only way this video would have been better is if Tim Allen did it and even than he would have burnt the house down (though in a funny manner)
Thank you for this video, just bought a house, the previous homeowners had wires crossed, nothing worked. Your very simple explanation guided me through, door chime works perfect. 👍
Want to thank you sir for the easy and clear explanation, I've looked reviews on you tube on how to install a doorbell using wires and you video is the most clear and easy to understand.
I liked the video. I would suggest at the end that you review or summarize or and overview of what was shown.\or depicted. Thank you for the instruction. I hope when we replace ours it will be as easy as you made it seem.
Thank you sir so much. My parents wanted to add a Ring doorbell hardwire and this helped them put it on a lot easier. The house didn’t even had a doorbell system.
Hey man thanks for the video!! Couldn't have done it without it. Detailed yet simple instructions, I did my house that had no pre existing doorbell, I have very minimal experience with electrical but I knew enough to hook it up into my electrical box, thanks again!
Can you split the wire to make 2 separate chime connections? My chime burnt out when contractor was working on front door install (but he has no idea what could have caused it; LOL) I wanted to put double chimes side by side to replace old one (increasing DBs in same location); took the wire that was existing that was connected to burnt chime and spliced 2 new wires in (all 3 reds in one wire nut and all 3 blacks in the other). I already had 30amp transformer bc I wanted to this originally but never did. Thanx in advance for the help!
Is there a negative and positive coming off the transformer on the 24 volt side. And would it matter if you put the negative on where it says trans on the chime or the positive on the trans. Or does it matter
I originally wired two blue to left and two white to right. Yes, two short circuits which get interrupted by someone buzzing! 😂 I drew a diagram based on your demo, I connected Chime (second wire on left terminal, and connected both blue wires together and twisted and out electric tape atop. Left white wire went to Transformer terminal on Chime, and blue wire went to front terminal. Short circuit gone! Now it works beautifully! Thank you!!!!!
Is the transformer supposed to be inside of the junction box? My understanding is that it can overheat inside that box, so you're supposed mount the transformer on the outside of the junction box using the punchout hole on the side of the box.
Get a fish tape or some kind or instrument to slide through the walls. You most likely going to have to cut open drywall. Every situation is different depending on where you pull power from and where you bell is located. If you have a basement and attic access makes it much easier.
Hey buddy, you have to find the easiest way through your house. If you are doing it for yourself. If you hire an electrician , then it's his problem because he's getting paid, okay?
In the original video you had the white neutral wire in the middle of the transformer and in this video it’s switched with the red(hot) wire. I’m a bit confused does it matter?
How about connecting the new smart doorbells that they come with a wireless chime? Just conect the 2 terminals from the transformer to the unit itself? I'm not sure
It should all be wired exactly the same way if it requires a transformer. They just take off the old doorbell button and put the newer smart doorbells back on, hook the same wires up.
@@33electric33 I understand but what I meant is if I install a smart doorbell for the first time and there is no previous bell, and since let's say the eufy brand doorbell comes with a wireless chime that just plugs to a regular outlet, do I just conect the 2 terminals doorbell to the transformer?
@@MarioR23 If its a wireless chime, then it would have to just make a loop from the camera/button to the transformer, back to the button. It's going to come with a wiring diagram, make sure to check that. If there are no other components, that's the only possible way.
A couple questions: 1. Does this have to be on its own circuit or can I splice into an existing 120 circuit. 2. What gauge wire should I use? 3. Is this a 12 volt transformer? Thanks in advance to who ever can help me :)
ring uses the voltage from the transformer. You can bypass the chime and it will still work as long as both wires are going directly to the transformer.
I noticed you did all that while the power was on I know you have to know what your doing but touching the transformer like that won’t shock you ? Bc I wanna turn the power off but if it’s that simple and safe I might just leave it on . Let me know what to do
If your talking about the chime, yes you can but you may need to get a bit higher voltage transformer so it will work. I did 3 once and think I found a 36volt transformer. same hook up
And that’s not how you install a transformer, not inside a box like that 🤦♂️. Needs a metal cover with a 1/2 knockout to support. Armatures, great way to start a fire.
Great job on the installation steps. You made it a snap to install a new doorbell that I never had before. You were extremely helpful and taught me something new.
Helpful but next time show all your work on a table and stop the camera from moving so much it was shaking bad and it was hard see everything you were doing. Thanks
The transformer goes from 120 to low voltage, it can be 16, 18 or 24 volts really no chance of getting shocked from the low voltage to the chime but I always recommend shutting off the breaker until you’re ready to test your doorbell. Good luck
By the way the 120 volt doesn’t have to be on its own circuit you can spice it into any junction box just make sure you shut off the breaker. He didn’t mention that.
the blatantly obvious hard part is hooking up from breaker box and where to run the wires, neither discussed, the easy part is hooking up what u described

yes you can have 2 chimes, just jump the wiring from the same terminals over to the new chime. you will want a bit bigger transformer for that

Yes, you got it. Metal boxes also have holes in the cover you can buy.
This is the easy part. Need to find a video on how to do the actual wire run (how to handle scenarios like running it through different walls)
Get a fish tape or some kind or instrument to slide through the walls. You most likely going to have to cut open drywall. Every situation is different depending on where you pull power from and where you bell is located. If you have a basement and attic access makes it much easier.
Just found a few videos on something called a “magnepull” that look promising (coming from an attic scenario)

The transformer needs to be outside the box not inside.

Color of wire doesn't matter only where they go... it's not a neutral

1. Either. You can do whatever is easiest. Amperage is so low it will not affect anything.
2. 18 or 20 works well
3. I believe it's 16 or 18 volts.

I don't see a transformer but I see 2 blacks and 2 whites then the small door bell wire...couldd it be Im missing my doorbell?
You only need 2 wires that loop through the system. Sounds like you are going to have to troubleshoot where those wires go.
Very clear explanation
The AC wiring needs to be in a j box but the transformer itself shouldn’t be enclosed. It generates heat and needs air circulation.
Would this process work for the ring doorbell? (Minus the door chime)
I have honestly never installed a ring doorbell, so I couldn't give you proper info on that.
Yes
ring uses the voltage from the transformer. You can bypass the chime and it will still work as long as both wires are going directly to the transformer.
Does Doorbell Terminal need to be on its own breaker or can I jump from a Bedroom plug to terminal?
It's very low amperage so it shouldn't be a problem to share with your bed circuit if it's easier. I would do whatever is easiest.
Great explanation..way to go

I know transformers get hot from reducing the voltage, would that be a fire risk in that plastic housing?
The transformer has a thread on power wire side, so you can stick it through a 1/2inch KO on a metal box. That would be the best way to mount it.
