Mr. Chris Craft, I just want to say thank you for this clearly explained how to wire a doorbell video. My wired doorbell stopped working about 10 years ago. At the time, I tried but couldn't fix it. So, I got a wireless doorbell. It worked for a while but not reliable. After several years I got another wireless doorbell. Same result. After listened to my wife's harping on me to fix the doorbell I went to UA-cam and found your video. The simplicity of your explanation was perfect. I was able to follow your diagram and sort out the mess which was my existing doorbell wiring. Look, I just want to say thanks. Do more videos like this.

Why is it that wives can complain about things for years but not even attempt to fix it themselves? Wouldn’t it be a treat if they did? I help around the house with vacuuming, washing dishes, laundry, cook some, but the help never seems to go the other way. “I cant do that stuff” is the response. Yet, women want equal pay in the workplace? Non sequitur I say. 😂😂🤦‍♂️

After spending countless hours wiring and rewiring, I am so glad I ran across your video. A diode was the reason my chime would not work. Thank you a million times over for posting your video and mentioning that tiny diode. I purchased the one I needed and the chime works like it should!

Attaching the doorbell to the mount is a little difficult but once it locks into place it seems extremely sturdy. ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxxHZwMa8CsRjYhf9s4W8w0Dwm47uytWOp I replaced my regular doorbell with this and hard wired it in, using my existing wires and mechanical chime. It works perfect so far and integrates perfectly with my blink camera system. It also works seamlessly with Alexa

Good point about the diode, this is a life long issue with people putting in doorbells. They think "Ahh, I don't need that, it's a pain. It works.." then complain about it. A company would not spend the money to include it if not needed. It's only a few cents but, over the course of a million units, it's a lot of money.
I like the seasonal ring tones for Christmas, new year (Auld lang syne) and your birthday... lol. Bethoven is cool, too.
Mostly, I appreciate your straightforward, lay out and test the unit first approach because it ensures the product, your doing it right and removes confusion when you start stringing wire. Common sense stuff, which isn't too common, anymore. Thanks!
(P.S. You'll enjoy your ring doorbell. I recommend them to anyone.)

I love these straight-ahead DYI type videos. Working out the details and bugs as you go through the install. Which is how I tend to do these things. I need to get power to my Ring doorbell because I am tired of removing it and putting it on the charger. I saw the Ring doorbell in your video, got excited for a second until you said that was for another day. bummer. Anyway, thanks for the wiring help.

Thank you for this. I just bought a nest video doorbell thinking it would solve my problem on not having a doorbell connected, but apparently, you still need a full doorbell before installing the Nest. Argh...I will have to figure out how to get that done and how to pass the wires. At the very least this gives me a good idea of how to do so.

In this particular case, the direction of the diode doesn't matter because it's an A/C system. The electric is always switching directions, back and forth; 60 times per second here in the States. The diode keeps the power going in one direction flowing so it can keep the chime playing. So, it's basically using only half the power to play the tune. If the diode is not there, then all the power disappears when you release the button, and the tune stops.

@@chriscraft77022 Hey Chris...the Nest Doorbell has just a plethora of neat options that were too hard to pass up. First, I got the Ring Pro and an Echo 5 for my wife for Christmas ( a killer deal at $140 for both). I got the Ring installed but hadn't got the Echo setup, then my son got me a whole bunch of Google Home items for Christmas, which we celebrated with him on New Years Day. I was sold on GH from that point, even though I had invested in a few Echo products and had the whole home setup (with my Insteon system), I ordered a Google Hub (the 7" screen), and researched the Nest Hello on various reviews. Ordered the Hello Doorbell on eBay for $179, then sent back the Ring and Echo 5 to Amazon, and now easily got everything setup correctly (definitely had to replace the transformer with a 16 volt, 30VA transformer from Amazon, so now even my home address sign on the front shines better!). I LOVE the ability set the Activity Zones for different notifications, and as I've always used Google Photos for all my pics, the ability to have Familiar Faces setup was key (GH will announce WHO is at the door if you've set this up). PLUS....the announcement feature (that many seem to forget to set in Nest)) announces someone at the door - at every Google speaker you've setup, and we've got one in almost every room of the house (more to come with the work shed, backyard, and few more Google displays)! Also, the 2-way sound is MUCH clearer with Nest Hello. Video is as good as my 2k Lorex cameras (12 of them). I've got the 30 day trial, as as much as I'm against any re-occuring fees, I'll probably wind up forking out the $50 per year for the Nest subscription. I just like the way that Google has integrated everything much better and easier. Oh...and no battery with Hello to worry about...it's all hardwired. And it all runs on the 5G band of my home network. My point about the existing doorbell was that: 1) I'm not quite sure I need to replace it, since GH announces everywhere, and 2) in wiring it might have got screwed up between a Ring installation and the Hello installation (and I can't even find a manufacturer's name on the unit, so you know it's a contractor special, so it's junk). But soon to be selling the home, I'll probably get a new chime because the Hello Doorbell is moving with us (unless a buyer wants to pay for the whole GH system!).

Pretty cool. I used a wireless doorbell for the longest time but I've recently upgraded my system to a ring doorbell and I couldn't remember how to wire up a doorbell. I was thinking the new ones had the transformers built into the chimes. Anyway I am using the battery for now but I want to be able to use more features and not have to waist batteries. I already have a roll of wire so I just need the transformer and chime. It would be easier if they just included the transformer in the chime but I guess it will be cheaper to replace that way. It seems like my old house I had to replace the transfomer a few times lol.

I wish mine was this simple to set up.
Whoever wired the last door bell used 5 regular stranded 14 gauge wires. what a cluster.
Nothing is marked and all the wires are black, so I had my wife push the doorbell button so I could figure out what wires were what and crimped some different color spade lugs on them for now.
I figured out the transformer wires and after trial error, seem to have it set up for the front door OK. I left the existing button on the front door and it seems to be ok without the diode
I plan to splice the crazy wires together to bell wire and shove everything into the battery bay.
    I WILL TAME THIS MESS!!!

Never get wireless doorbells. A lot of them are built cheaply and crappily and the elements like rain, heat, and snow will destroy them. And too much radio interference can cause the Bluetooth ones to de-pair as well. Just stick with a hard wired doorbell and you will never have an issue. Fishing wiring behind walls when you cannot cut open the walls is the hardest part.

Not sure anyone answered this yet regarding mounting the transformer to the box. The screw gets removed, and you insert the wires and the plate through the outside of the box, then replace the screw and tighten it against the inside of the box to hold it in place. Saves you from having to add the clamp you used at 3:50.

The black band on a diode is called the cathode and it should be wired to the negative side of the circuit. To check if a diode is good, put the black meter lead on the banded side of the diode and the red lead on the bandless side of the diode. In resistance mode, if the diode conducts9 shows low resistance), the diode is good. If you reverse the leads, a good diode will show infinite resistance and it should not conduct.
