i dont know about where you live felix but here in the states you can buy hexagon stock cheap so you would not have to cannibalize your drill bits or hexagon wrenches are cheap too. and maybe try some jb weld in the hole to lock it in place. and if that works you could probably cut off those protruding sides to make it more compact as well.

I enjoyed the video and thought it was really nice of you to show how it failed. This is why I showed my fails on video so many times. Some people who watch youtube videos get demotivated seeing that they can't do it on the first try and somehow it always works "for the guy on the screen"(and his editing team) 🤣
I think, if you wanted to you could make it work. Drill a hole thru the body of the bit and insert a pin thru that hole and the ones which are already there in the ratchet, where the rivet was. that might not be a permanet solution as it would still move but if the sides of the pin rest on the margins of the larger hole...it might...
I am sure I am not telling you something you haven't thought about...and maybe thought: when is drilling too many holes too much?😏

    • @FelixImmler
      @FelixImmler  7 місяців тому

I didn't wanted use tool what no one have in his workshop. It has to be a full hart metall drill to drill such a hole for a pin.

And it never failed on me
I use it at work on a daily basis.
And it held up longer than some higher end 6mm ratchets that i owned. It’s so light. It’s the only one i end up using

Great first attempt. If you can find something with a quarter-inch socket on one end and an oversized bit at the other end - then grind the oversized end down on two opposite sides so you have a long, flat quarter-inch piece of metal to fit right into the ratchet, similar to the Leatherman.

Great video, yet again, Felix. I wonder if this would work if you had access to a few more tools. Perhaps the cross hole, where the rivet was originally placed, could be tapped from each side and each could be fitted with a set screw/grub screw, whatever you call them over there, and they could be tightened against the hex shaft to help prevent it from turning. Along with that, maybe you could coat all the contact points on the hex bit with a good two part slow epoxy. That would take some of the strain off of the two side walls that you are depending on now to be the only driving surface for the hex bit.
Maybe surrounding the hex shaft with epoxy would be enough. Fill in the entire area between those plates that held the rivet so that you would be creating a long, two thirds epoxy and one third metal hex hole that is now contacting more of the bit.
One other idea would be to cut off the screwdriver tips of the bit, grind one end with a small amount of chamfer and simply drive it down into the 6MM hole and let the 6 corners cut as much of a hex hole as it can. That would grip at the corners a little bit, at least. I actually have some Allen socket sets that are clearly made by forcing the hex key stock into a round hole and forcing the hole to become hex shaped and grip the hex bit. That is probably done with great hydraulic force, but you would be dealing with softer metal, probably aluminum or zinc, so less force should be required.
Just some ideas. I know you can make this work. Too good of an idea to just give up on. Ciao!

Yup, stuff happens.. but it was a good idea and might lead on to other solutions. That Leatherman device is just too expensive though, and I dare to say the Victorianox one is pricy too (I’ll take a look in a minute). And thanks for showing a ‘fail’ now and again - that keeps the channel ‘honest’ at least. If the ratchet body is steel then a touch of weld would fix it of course, but I presume it isn’t steel so that won’t work. Hey! I still enjoyed watching you working it out. Thank you. Les in UK 🇬🇧

Great that you show what doesn't work as well as what does! A roll pin through the hex bit, like a little wing, would keep it from turning all of the way. You'd still have a tiny bit of slack movement. I've had the Leatherman ratcheting bit for several years, so not an issue for me. It's very useful in the Leatherman tool.

I love your attitude, Felix! And we learn more from our failures than our successes! I am sitting here thinking of ways to make your project work, which is a lot better than if it had worked the first time. Perhaps something as simple as a hose clamp around the assembly to hold pressure on the walls? Epoxy around the bit? A lot of food for thought here, thanks for the project! (Btw I have the Victorinox ratchet, and love it- extremely well made, and precise- but not sure I'd use it on something as big as the wood bit.)

You are on the correct way, choose a smaller drill, a shorter bit, and as a bonus, use a philips no 2 to be "up" then You could reverse the bit holder and use the ph2. And to strengthen the bit, use epoxi/jb weld/plastic padding/soldering/welding the contraption, but beware of to much heat.

I wonder if the Titan Micro Swivel-Head Ratcheting Bit Driver might make a suitable donor? There are aluminum and steel handle versions (I assume steel would be better for this). Maybe you could chop the handle down and drill out the center slight undersize, then pound a bit into it. The Titan MSRP is a bit high for a DIY project, but I often see it for sale for about $12-15.

It would be hard to drill through a hardened (presumably S2 tool steel) hex bit unless you also bought a carbide drill bit. Problem is, those aren't cheap and are easily broken if you attempt to use a hand drill.

So the task is the next: Victorinox must produce a ratchet less expensive than Leatherman, and also compatible with the Swisstool toolkit.

I wondered if that was going to happen. I also wondered if you were going to epoxy it in.

I use for mtbiking the Topeak Ratchet...nice piece of equipment and I never had an issue with it. Not sure how it will hold up if you drill 20mm holes with it.

Hi Felix, I have an adapter set for sockets to use in an impact driver and it includes 0.25 inch for small sockets, it's square drive. Maybe you could use something like that to drive a ratchet via the hex hole in the Venture? Good luck!

good video Felix, not everything goes perfect everytime ahaha it's not a problem and make it interesting.
How the Victorinox ratchet mecanism stand with all the pressure when the drill bit is deep in the wood?

      Yes... it is strong enough!

Maybe use a 1/4” hex to a 1/4” square drive to start then epoxy it in place.

Take off the plastic handle of the screwdriver the metal shank inside might be the right size 🤔 just a suggestion. Good idea all the same. Best regards 👍

We usually learn as much or more from failures as successes. Good idea though.

You can allways driñl a hole across the drill bit and push a bar/pin that locks itself in the 2 "ears"...or Just cement it in the hole before pushing it in (there are phat resins, or "cold weldings" this days)...OR BOTH !!

I had a ratcheting thumb driver that I got from amazon Titan 11218 it was1/4 inch on one end and hex head on the other it comes with a phillips flathead and 1/4 inch extension. I took the bottle opener and saw off of an offbrand multitool and replaced them with a 1/4 inch driver to go on it. It works great. 3 for 11.00

I'm very sorry I thought they were ratcheting but they are just thumb drivers with a female hex one end and 1/4 inch square.female

Fellix, why not to fix the bit, by drilling cross hole through the bit and bit holder and sticking there a steel rod of small diameter (1,5-2 mm)?! The position of the hole is near the big hole. Hope you understand my idea.
