@@surrealtastic Actually, that's a good point. What about modified SE games, like Titanfall 2 or Apex Legends? What about Source 2? What about games BASED on Source engine titles? There's a lot they can explore. Here's what I think could be the results of each test: Postal 3: For a generative AI, Postal 3 is, somehow, one of the BEST for them to use, with positive and negative reinforcement states. A lot of demos would probably play with that, potentially reaching a climax with a full game run with either ending. Titanfall 2: Demos featuring more mobile DNPCs, with hands and stuff, operating titans and other machinery. Probably would have a DNPC try to fight an umbrella man with the Titan, only for him to phase through it. Apex: similar to the TF2 gameplay, probably a lot of crashers present. HLA: Probably the climax or ending of the series, if its ever used. Probably going to reveal a twist about what how the DNPCs actually operate in tests, probably relating to HLA's VR.
I don't understand why people say the "vr" parts ruined it. I think those parts greatly enhanced this arg. This has got to be my second favorite Source ARG
Kind of a stretch, but I wonder then if this indicates that the DNPC tech has been in development since long before Source. Source is directly related to the original Doom engine, albeit a few generations removed. The progression goes Doom > Quake > GoldSrc > Source. According to John Carmack, lead developer for the Quake engine, there are still bits of early Quake code in HL2. Could be something, could not be, but it could be worth looking into.
The Eidamona story made me so sad. It seems to be just someone who lost a loved one and tried to bring them back when they found a way, only for it all to fail.
1:03:00 i think mona was his imaginary gf from the very beginning and not a real person. after using a citizen model for a while he switched to using an early AI gf model

Something hidden in episode 2: turning on subtitles reveals that Anomi was actually talking to someone called “L” during their Portal type 5 discovery. The hidden dialog I don’t think reveals much, but it appears Anomi wasn’t looking into Interloper alone during Nov 2022.
@@ltjp6611 What's so funny? It's just the Sauce Council. The real funny business is with the "antelope" command; just type "antelope" into the Sauce Council.
Probably the best concept to come out honestly, and with how A.I. and liminal space started to pick up, it makes this feel like the perfect culmination of everything.
Horrifying creepypasta that stalks you and has mystic powers: Me: 😐 A game breaks past your controls and runs without your input: Me: THATS NOT HOW THE GAME IS PLAYED! OUT OF THIS HOUSE! OUT OF THIS HOUSE!
Honestly, only when the sections recorded in VR appeared did I realize this wasn't actually real. And that says a lot about how well-made this series is!
Valve has worked with VR for years though, and motion capture itself is not out of the question. They used motion capture for the development of TF2 in 2007, long before they started work on any sort of VR hardware! Its not outside the realm of possibility.
Really? Not the fact that they thought that you can add text to a texture file, not destroy the original file, and still show up fine? Or the dumb idea to hide a message in a *texture file* which is the stupidest idea?
@@SCP-tn2lnbut you can, it's been done in other much earlier ARGs with similar results to the texture in the video (all the pixels encoded after the text being distorted and off-colour)
Recently I've gotten into the habit of bringing an umbrella around with me everywhere because it's easier protection from the sun than using sunscreen, so every time The Umbrella Man is brought up as this terrifying, ominous, powerful entity, all I can think about is me and my gay little parasol striking fear into the hearts of men in the same way Slender Man did for the previous generation of internet horror enthusiasts.
I had to double check but on spooky coast (25:55) right before the umbrella civ guy lunges at the camera the npc we're seeing through has his right hand broken.
I love the subtle detail of the heavy slolwy turning his head the other way when the spy bangs on the 4th wall for help, like he knows what's going to happen to him and doesn't want to witness it or be associated with it.
if you look at the original(the not arg one) called "spy is sandvich" the spy is supposed to be behind heavy, and the heavy supposed to slowly look at the spy behind him
This is one of the most realistic takes on an arg. You can tell the creators truly know the source engine and thus know how to make cool explanations for everything. Also having the videos be in the form of long form UA-cam mystery videos that people interact with is awesome since those videos are common, especially with half life 2
I now have the headcanon that Half-Life VR AI takes place in the same alternate universe and Wayne somehow manged to get his hands on a version of Half-Life Source that contains dynamic NPCs but is free from the Umbrella Men.
Surprisingly, gunslingerpro2009 was able to creep me out with the character's genuine fear, how they have sentience, and specially spy try to get us to help him.
The Interloper ARG has been one of my favorites. It's not like those ARGs where you need to look every pixel of a video to figure something out. The Interloper ARG can be interacted physically (Like the CS Source and TF2 demo) and how it involves A.I learning the game then gets targeted by the Interloper if it gets too self-aware.
1:25:57 I am watching this in the breakroom of my workplace, I am doing an overnight cleaning shift where I am basically the only person in a massive supermarket with the doors locked. I cannot fucking tell you the level of fear that went through my body when I heard this part of the soundtrack come in. I genuinely thought I was about to get murdered by a ghost.
As a network specialist my first thought as to "what is anomi connecting to" was use wireshark to see which tcp connections are established, or use a netstat -a in powershell to see all listening ports and corresponding applications
As well as the "Lan" category in the server browser, it probalby is looking for a hosted game in the local subnet using a broadcast and seeing if one client responds to it, limiting it to only the subnet the server is in
I think portal rtx was the server he connected to. I'm not a network engineer but I set up Silly Tavern with Kobold AI and Automatic1111 and it works the same(ish) way as what we see in the video.@@GeorgZoller1306
This ARG is perfect. It represents what I think it’s the most realistic and terrifying form of supernatural occurrence on a digital plane of existence, and it also engages the viewers on highly detailed investigation that covers the programming world in a way those who understand about it may get even more spooked than I do. It’s the first time I see those uncanny and “wrong” moments transplanted to a world only those familiar with the source engine can understand. And your narrative compilation of this is really good. Keep it up ❤
1:02:25 Not sure if someone has pointed it out yet, but going with the whole “Eida and Mona were two different people” theory, it’s actually more likely that “Jan” is Eida. Considering his accent, the fact he’d likely have easier access to Fsky with actual geographic relativity, and the fact that “Jan” is actually supposed to be pronounced “Yan” (since it’s dutch, plus it’s masculine), It feels a little more accurate.
My memory is kinda shit but is Eida's location even confirmed? Because if not, I want to point out Jan is also a Fairly common name in Norway, which makes sense with Fsky as well
FINALLY! Sagan Hawkes made a vid partially talking about Interloper but I was waiting for someone to make a full fledged analysis dedicated to the series. Thank you Mr. TheWhat Show.
@@jamesrosewell9081arg suggest that series progression is locked behind arg games (viewers should break the puzzles, find secret information, etc.) but this video seems like recap of what happend
Usually I don’t like these arg things because it requires me to use my small little brain, but I genuinely enjoy watching you make sense of it, it’s like I’m sitting in a room watching it with you and making guesses about it!
The existence and death of "Mona" brings me to tears out of both fear and sadness. She is lacking half a torso, twitching around, staring blankly ahead. I think she was *tortured* by Eida. A fully sentient AI *broken* out of malice. It terrifies me more than any of the eerie appearances of the Umbrella Men.
Something really terrifying I noticed was when I tried the interloper, a graffiti appeared. It wasn't the man in full black. Just a normal one. But when I came back to the game launching it once again, it wasn't there. That thing literally scared the ever-living hell out of me. It also freaks up your game; for example removing the G-Man TV appearance.
Liminal spaces trigger something in me because my family, for a time, worked in installing blinds and painting. Sometimes it would be during the summer or spring break and I would be forced to sit in an office chair and wait out the whole day. It was lonely, and it often lead to be having to use my imagination to find something to do. Look down an empty hallway to a classroom or an empty office with a patch of wall open for wiring, you get that same vibe with liminal spaces.
What I love about these source engine horror things is because it uses old urban legends about source engine and weird questions we’ve always thought playing alone on Gmod or reading theories about half life.
The coordinates Eida sent his associate could refer to somewhere inside the source engine. As established, the source engine is a gigantic "plane" or "universe" that Valve has contained where all of these games take place. These coordinates could likely be the location of something Eida has placed between maps in the abyss. If I had to guess, that mysterious blob/human shaped thing we see in the CSS incident could be another Mona hes been trying to make, and thats where the coordinates lead.
30:29 In some ways, it's like someone is wearing a full motion capture suit and recording these. Which I guess could be the case outside of the world of this 'ARG' in what ever stuff the creator does behind the scenes to make this stuff. Really hope the guy shows a behind the scenes when the series is done running its course because I'm very curious.
I like to imagine that this whole thing only exists because the creator figured out that you can use mocap in source demos and they thought to just make an arg about it
I remember when i saw this the first time i thought it was real and spent a long ass time trying to get this to work myself, this really shows how well this all is done
It's real, my friend has the gmod mod and got a type 5 demo, it lasted 3 seconds and crashed. He didn't save it but he was streaming it on discord and all we had was a screenshot.
I think the part of Edia having a more paranormal approach to the dynamic npcs is what actually sells this the most for me, if this was real and people were looking into it of course there would be at least a few people who would think of it as paranormal and look into it as such
The uncanny piano in portal 2 is a modified version of a song present in game files, it was a possible candidate for the contaner ride music and the most popular use of it is from a workshop map called "Real procedural generation" by lavashik which utilizes an a unused entity that allows to procedurally generate laser puzzles
Man, the map generation feature with the command in interlope reminds me of the Personalization A.I that blew up a few years ago with SM64. Just something about your childhood game having this dark history behind it's development with tools unheard of, and finding that unnerving explanation to why something felt off.

I used to open G mod maps, especially huge custom maps, and wander around to check them out and I swear the paranoia that there was going to be an unexplainable person or creature in there always happened.
You explained that liminal feeling perfectly in the intro. When i was screwing around in a private server on TF2 l literally had to close the game because I was freaking myself out too much
For the Eidamona bit: I think when he was asking the questions, if your theory is true, questions like 'Are you in pain' was to make sure Mona wasn't hurt during the process, making Eida the only person to bring a loved one back from the dead and have an IQ of at least 70.
Courage was and still is a very weird show. Ironically I didn’t get scared by most of the spooks like the weird “you’re not perfect” fetus, i got scared as a kid and had an existential crisis from a time travel episode i hardly remember now
Happy Appy, the creepypasta intended to be seen as a joke which the internet took way too seriously for so many years until the creator had to come out and say themself that it was satire.
If you pay attention, the shadow of N when he was in the portal demo after leaving the NPC looks very similar to the mannequin. And in the coast, the charecters thumb was broken before she was pushed in
I am SO glad Interloper is getting some attention. It's one of the best ARG's/creepypastas in a long while and it's clear Anomidae has put a lot of work, creativity and dedication into it. I am so happy he is getting more attention, especially after the latest videos are declining in views. I adore thia series and wish to see it to its end, so anything that shows Anomidae some support is very welcome 😁
I love when i watch a video and for 8 minutes you go into detail about an episode from a kids show from the 90s and a creepypasta about a fake kids show from the 70s, analog horror, as well as explaining how liminal spaces can trick your brain into feeling like you've been somewhere you haven't just to help illustrate how nostalgia can be used as a tool for horror, then i realise this is about a gmod arg and i think "ah yes, a true video essay"
32:03 Error 405 in the Portal 1 demo means "Method Not Allowed" (Source: MDN). As it is the last demo before the time limit runs out I personally think that the method part of the error is interesting, maybe signifying that the way that anomidae connected before is no longer allowed by the hoster of these DNPCs, but the server for the DNPCs and the demos is still up (which I think is how anomidae connected with the Portal RTX method)
If 405 means that Anomidae is maintaining a connection 'illegally' thanks to some kind of loophole... Maybe the real Interloper is Anomidae, and by continuing to meddle with demo gen, he's delving deeper and deeper into the core of what ever FSKY is hosting on their servers. If exploring the new voids are the next step in the process, then I can really see an aspect of Eldritch Horror to evolve. Especially as more and more power is taken from both, us as viewers, and Anomidae as the Interloper.

@@surrealtastic Actually, that's a good point. What about modified SE games, like Titanfall 2 or Apex Legends? What about Source 2? What about games BASED on Source engine titles? There's a lot they can explore.
Here's what I think could be the results of each test:
Postal 3: For a generative AI, Postal 3 is, somehow, one of the BEST for them to use, with positive and negative reinforcement states.

Because if not, I want to point out Jan is also a Fairly common name in Norway, which makes sense with Fsky as well
There's something so realistically charming about him just humming along to the radio during the type 5 exploration
