My father served in WWII, though he was in the navy. But he had friends who were in the army, and they told him that in France, the German tanks would lay low during the day because of Allied air power. But every evening at dusk once it got too dark to fly combat patrols, these engines would start up as the Germans moved their tanks into position for the next day's fighting, and the Allied soldiers would hear the sound. It must have been a chilling experience.

My grandfather drove One of these in the Ardennes and later in Poland, last time he stepped off One of these he left the whole crew dead due to a mine explosion shockwave, he was the only with the hatch open while maneuvering through a forest, and that probably saved his life. He did a 25km run back with the whole crew dead inside the tank from the front line somewhere in Poland and ended the war in a field hospital

The Tiger II, although it’s armour was almost invincible and it’s firepower was almost unmatched on the battlefield, it was a rare sight, even rarer than the Tiger tank. And that was because of several reasons. One, the Tiger II was a very expensive machine to mass produce, and Germany could not afford to build more than a few hundred of these, while the Allies were building thousands of tanks, Germany was building only hundreds because of their limited resources. Two, many of the few Tiger IIs had mechanical failures, or their tracks got clogged in the mud before they even got to the action. And three, fuel. Fuel shortages had always plagued the German army, and the Tiger II did not improve the fuel situation at all, if anything it consumed even more and more fuel even faster than the Tiger I and Panther tanks did, not to mention it wasn’t even that fast, and many King tigers were outmanoeuvred by their Allied counterparts, or got to the front too late and the battle was already lost because of their fuel shortage and low speed.

You need to learn a lot more about the "King Tiger" (thats the first point: it was never officially named "king tiger" or "königstiger" during war. this came after the war)
The deeper you dig, the more interesting the Tiger 2 becomes.
      1:
Yes, they were expensive, but money wasnt as important as you may think, even at the war end phase.
Mainly it was the way germany built those tanks: they didnt used assembly line production, because the thought you get bad quality with mass production.
+ The Tiger 2 final assembly was in Kassel, side info: in Kassel they also made the Tiger 2 towers. but they had over 37 locations throughout germany where they produced parts for the Tiger 2 and they had a lot forced labourers, which were slower etc.(for example to install the tower equpiment germany workers need 7 days MAX. the forced labourers needed between 12 to 14 days and so on)
Also when you have long transport routes means time aswell or produciton stop when train tracks and roads were destroyed.
      No parts - no tanks
      2:
Never heard that "clogged tracks" was a issue for the Tiger 2. (IMO every tank which drives through mud gets "clogged" tracks...) and getting stuck wasnt really a problem, cause the Tiger 2's ground pressure was 1,02kg/cm² (for example: Merkava has 0,97kg/cm² and Challenger as 0,95kg/cm², which came years later)
bigger problem was bridges... basically every bridge was a dead end
Yes, he had technical failures, but not extremely more like every other tank on the battlefields during this time.
      3:
The goal for a heavy or super heavy tank clearly is NOT to drive fast as hell. Keep in mind, the max speed is only achievable on street, which makes this argument pretty useless. I mean: tanks drive mostly offroad and offroad you dont need to be fast. the truth is, the Tiger 2 wasnt crazy slow, and not realy fast, but in his category of (super) heavy tanks the Tiger 2 have the same speeds like any other (super) heavy tanks from other nations and was in the lower mids with his max speed.
Oh, and the background of the Tiger 2: He was the "true Tiger", the Tiger 1 was just a intermediate step. The first plans for the Tiger 2 was made back in 1940/1941.
But problems in planning and testing have pushed back the production of the Tiger 2 more and more,
thats why he came so late on the battlefields and to make matters worse: he came to the wrong war. The Tiger 2 wasnt designed for the type of war they had in 1944/45.
Hitler knew that the war had changed in 1943/44, thats why he adjusted the production numbers of the individual tanks. For example the Tiger 2 was in the lower double digit range per month and from the Jagdpanzer 38(t) (who got mistakenly the name "Hetzer") should be around 2500 per month.
(no, Hitler wasnt that dumb like 1sonyzz think he was "bigger is better").

    • @CrankPointZero
      @CrankPointZero 2 роки тому +5

@@revoulse8359 Completely wrong. they had 2 issues with the steel:
      1:
They ran out of tungsten and molybdenum, so the reduced the portion down to around 0,12%. (normaly it should be at 0,25%)
They tried to make the best the could with the ressources they had.
      2:
The process to make armor steel wasnt that easy back in the days.
The steel need a certain temperature, quenching the steel shouldnt need to long or to short (the time also varies with the liquid you use for quenching: oil, water,..)if you make something worng the steel doesnt get hard enough or get "glasshard" (thats what u said hard AF but brittle).
Then after that you need to temper the steel because you need some of the toughness back. same here if you do it wrong you get a brittle piece of steel ...
      3:
Like you saw getting good quality armor steel isnt easy at all:
The Tiger 2 was special: because the front armor got changed from 120mm up to 150mm and because of this thickness they couldn't use oil to quench and HAD to use water. My info I know: Quenching with water is something like the masterclass. You always have to be careful, because water cools down the steel extremely quickly, too quickly, then afterwards you have the problem that you have to heat the thick steel plate evenly again (tempering)
So you need skilled people to do that! People who know exactly what they have to do and how they have to do it - well, professionals!
But those skilled professionals wasnt in the factories anymore, they were need on the front.
This is the biggest quality impact. even bigger than missing ressources

It looks so massive because only way to get more protection back then was to add more steel. If you built something as resilient as an Abrams turret just from steel, you'd be looking at armor thickness similar to a battleship...
Basically a modern MBT has better protection and firepower than what was planned for the Maus, with mobility better than a WW2 armored scout car.

    • @lightbluewaves5526

Late comment but the tiger 2 wouldn't last a minute even if receiving modern equipment. Because especially compared to an abrams or leopard, the tiger 2 is both huge and slow, making it a very easy target compared to said modern mbts who at least got mobility

The Finnish Stug 3's took out many bigger soviet tanks, but it was probably thanks to the Finnish soldiers themselves cause they managed to take out soviet vehicles with Molotoff cocktails
