For those who don't know, This is called an *inertial starter.* That pole would be connected to a gear inside that hole, which would be connected to a few other gears in a step-up fashion. (Gear reduction but the opposite way). The other end of that gear train would be a *heavy* gear that connects to the engine's flywheel (connected to the crankshaft). Now that gear is heavy for a reason. When you got that last gear up to a high enough rotational speed, the momentum, the driver would use whatever mechanisms to connect that gear to the flywheel. Then, the energy of the _inertia_ of that gear's fast rotation would go into the flywheel, turning it. It wouldn't turn it for long. But it would be just long enough to get the engine started. Which is why i love german engines. They barely make a full revolution before starting up. Which, even by modern standards, is damn impressive. Even as old as this big heavy Maybach engine is, it started up in no time at all! And in my book, the mark of a well-designed engine is the quick fidelity of it's starting process. EDIT: Maybach engine, NOT porsche. I always thought it was a porsche engine. Thanks for the correction!
Yes but how hard would it be to mount a similar system as a backup starter on my old Ford. I've asked on countless automotive forums and nobody can give a concrete answer. They used to put inertials on old semi trucks too it can't be that hard right? Some fabrication work maybe but surely not as hard as totally rebuilding the engine
I remember a time when my grandpa’s friend (who was much older then my grandfather) told me about his time in the army in WW2, he was a tanker and one night when there 3 tank platoon had set up camp, they were getting ready to sleep when they heard a group of tigers starting up in the night. I got to say it's so nice to see your "former enemy" working on a German tank and just enjoying the same passion about technic together. Besides its basically build for the opposite.
From what I understand the clutch and gear change from 1 to 2 has a massive amount of torque used mainly for climbing hills or over all the smoldering wrecks of Allied tanks. Then the gearbox breaks ofc.
In synchronized transmission....even with the clutch in the transmission must be moving at same speed as crank....this is why he revved it up before changing gears....some big rigs are the same way
The driver only uses the clutch when starting out from a dead stop. From there, the clutch and shifting is semi-automatic. The driver pre-selects the next gear then pushes the lever to actuate the shift. Clutch actuation and gear shifting is done by a hydraulic system. It appears 131 needs some adjusting. Gearbox issues were a common problem for Tigers.
Its not actually a hand crank, no human would be strong enough to crank over a Tiger I's engine, no way in hell. This is an inertia starter, used on planes and tanks for ages, its a big old heavy flywheel that is slowly accelerated by an electric motor or human power, and once it is spinning fast enough it is engaged with the crankshaft and cranks the engine.
+Adrien Perié Still - people are strong enough to crank over this engine, though not powerful enough to do it directly, without accumulating the power in spinning flywheel :)
Valdas Valintėlis Yes and also with use of leverage and mechanical advantage, but the puny human's power output is never enough at any one time to crank over the engine, not close either, try and crank over a diesel engine, any diesel engine, and you'll see. Gasmoline engines are more forgiving because of the lower compression ratios. But yeah in theory if you accumulated all the kinetic energy you produced and liberated in the environment after it was brought to you by the sun more or less directly through organic chemistry in chemical form, you might have quite a bang, someone must have estimated that number somewhere.

there is no upside to war gaming this thing against a leopard, you'll just end up exciting all the neonazis and that is not worth the issues it'd cause just to suck the army's dick more than the masses already do.
Yes that is true, but their manufacturing methods where sadly lacking, no mass production on the scale the allies used. It's been said by the Germans themselves that they produced each Panzer of all Marks pretty much by hand, one at a time. Only a little over 1500 Tigers were ever build, their best all-round Tank was the Panther too few of them.(about 7000 I think) And it was the excellent Russian KV-1 Heavy and T34 Medium Tanks that spurred the Germans to build the Tiger-E and Panther-D.
M.r. Moon It's almost like every G.I was issued a Sherman when he was sent to Europe. We had the numbers. We could afford to sacrifice the two or three it would take to take out, or try to take out, one Tiger. Awesome tank. Even by todays standards.

While in command of a single Panzerkampfwagen VI Tiger he destroyed up to 14 tanks and 15 personnel carriers along with 2 anti-tank guns within the space of 15 minutes."
Indy7272 Yes I would, because my whimsy, concerning a bunch of old geezers who should grow up, in 2013 has little to do with 1944. You should stop living in the past.
+Kowalski Indeed it was rushed to the front way before development was completed. My grandfather was a tank commander in WW2 and he has left me memoirs stating his division commander even protested against the assignment of a Tiger group to his division because he regarded them as a useless burden. They suffered heavily from the harsh climate in Russia and later were mostly relocated to France
Despite the tank with the highest fire-power at the time is came into front operation (late 1942) is was notorious for being underpowered. The Maybach V12 engine was rated 700 hp but the weight was also tremendous, hardly less than a modern tank of the 21st century. So most Tigers were not lost by enemy fire but ended up with engine failures due to overheating and piston jamming.
WOW!!!! that is truly a beast, its kinda eerie watching it move knowing its history, what it must of been like to see a bunch of these heading towards u. amazing restoration - a credit to those who keep it alive
The shift from first to second was brutal. Let go of the gas, double clutch, then shift. Man he just jammed it in!! It's not like you can find spare parts.
the tiger 1 had a hydraulically operated gearbox with "Dog Clutches". these are not friction coefficient clutches like a car one but physically need to be bashed together to click into place. just like a racecar gearbox with Dogs instead of synchro's. there's a cool read here www.alanhamby.com/transmission.shtml
Engine and transmission are cold. Also rad in earlier post Tiger was late foe display due to the starting problems and they didnt have time to let it properly warm up.
It has a pre selector gearbox. No clutch pedal on this. I really think you should watch the tank museums videos to learn about how they preserve these vehicles. They are experts on the tiger and know exactly what they are doing.
Terry,I been told the first time some soldiers heard a group of Tigers they fled. Tiger Porsche version that was rejected in favor of this Tiger variant actually had hybrid engine. In 2016 we still don´t have that many hybrid cars, you would think they would be driven by everyone already, but they are still quite rare. And during muddy and freezing invasion of Soviet Union, Germans believed time had come for hybrid tank. Germans are just so notorious for making something way too complicated. Russians put together tractor, engine and gun and they call it T34 and destroy many German tanks with those, while Germans were over-engineering before they even had cars. Respect for sure. Those Porsche tanks did really work too. And it was not puny car, or light tank, or medium tank, but heaviest tank Germans had! There is just something seriouselly wrong with Germans. They conguered Rome, they were major political power in Europe long before German nation was born. Holy Roman Empire was basically European Union with Emperor. Prussia decided they did not need army for their nation, so instead their army had a nation - state budjet was 7 million thalers, 5 million went to military. And Prussia, tiny nation of 8 million men, fought off multiple world powers with tens of times their population, and won the war. In Napoleonic wars Germans did half the fighting of the war (if all Germans are put together), and at Waterloo big portion of Wellington`s army were Germans - and then came Prussians. Then Germans decided to fight each other a little and Prussian went on to fight France and form German Empire while Austria formed Austro-Hungarian Empire. Then Germany had to help their allies all the time and did most of the fighting in WW1, and fought off the world for 4 years. Came close to victory too. In WW2 Germany did far better, first fought off 2 front war and defeated Poland in a month, and France in bit longer time - where as in WW1 it took millions of casualties and 4 years and France was not defeated. Then Germans visited Balkans as they again had to help their allies, and invaded Soviet Union. There there were single battles with more losses than in entire western front. After fighting entire world and helping their allies for 6 years, Germany was divided in 2. And in 2016, 2 world wars were fought against Germany and here Germany is leading European Union, is major economical power, and despite being pacifist nation has one of the strongest armies in the world. Somebody should tell Germans what word "impossible" means. But i guess that would be impossible.
Three of us got VIP tickets to tank day one year - during the day we had a 45 minute lecture about "how to start a tiger that's not been run for more than a couple of days"! Putting oil directly into places, removing plugs and manually turning it over - the whole thing would take hours (if you knew what you were doing). Or... you could restart the engine every couple of hours - so Oddball from Kelly's Heroes was dead right - restarting them every so often WAS standard procedure (and that "To a New Yorker like you, a hero is some type of weird sandwich, not some nut who takes on three tigers."!)
Nazi Germany attacked Poland on september 1st 1939, then on september 17 Soviet union attacked Poland from other side. (read Molotov-Ribbentrop pact - Poland was partitioned between nazis and soviets)
@Николай Полякова i just thought that this "joke" aint no joke and need to be straightened. Hitler wanted Poland to be his ally and attack ZSRR together but Poland refused, so Hitler atacked Poland. That joke bout Poland telling nazis that ZSRR not home.. Whats funny in this? I just think that people need to know the things the way they are, either way we end up believing in lies.
@@albik3016 You forget that before that, Poland and Germany divided Czechoslovakia. If you know about the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact, you know about this historical fact.
Unfortunately there is no way not to do that. It isn't like the gearbox on a car, as it has no syncro. To shift, you have to rev-match it all the time. I suppose with time and practice, a driver would reach a point where he would be able to perform this smoothly. Other tanks of the time had crash boxes where every gear change was like this, but they were more resilient and simple to build.

If the Tiger was in their hands, then they'd have no problem with it starting up. And they did manage to salvage a damaged but still operational Tiger during WW2 from Africa, so its not like it was a ghost or anything. But yeah the Tiger was a horrifying sight for the allies, I wont deny that.
Justin Haas the panther tanks had also been struck by the misfortion of being made by Germany, the tank was built then deployed without proper testing and half of them broke down before they could even start combat, the Russians built the sturdy T34s wich did not run on gas like most of the German armor and did a good job at countering German armor.

Big Joe: That's about 65 million Marks. Kelly: And Sergeant, all you have to do to have an equal share of this money, is to crank this turret around and blow a hole in that door.
Lt Robo There was once a modern tank stolen by a mad man. Police vans crowded the tank, forcing the criminal to stop. They then used a blowtorch to open the tank. Sometimes even a tank can't push through something. =)
Skraith then that was not a modern tank nor an experienced driver. a tank is built to take shots from large caliber guns. a blow torch will not do anything to the armor. a tank is built to go over and through much more difficult terrain that makes a police van look like cheese. Dont believe me? Ask a track hoe operator or someone who drives a bulldozer.

They have that Maybach V12 absolutely singing. Makes me wonder what that thing sounds like at full chat in top gear.
Someone find Bovington a big enough field for them to let the Tiger stretch its legs! Also wouldn't mind seeing a war game between this thing and a Leo 2, just to demonstrate how far tank tech has come in the past 60 or 70 years.
there is no upside to war gaming this thing against a leopard, you'll just end up exciting all the neonazis and that is not worth the issues it'd cause just to suck the army's dick more than the masses already do.
Thats what you call Beauty and the best in heavy metal .. as freighting as it is beautiful what a gorgeous tank this Tiger was and is ...
you can say what you want about hitler and WWII Germany, but their technologies were pretty damn good compared to other countries.
Yes that is true, but their manufacturing methods where sadly lacking, no mass production on the scale the allies used.
It's been said by the Germans themselves that they produced each Panzer of all Marks pretty much by hand, one at a time.
Only a little over 1500 Tigers were ever build, their best all-round Tank was the Panther too few of them.(about 7000 I think)
And it was the excellent Russian KV-1 Heavy and T34 Medium Tanks that spurred the Germans to build the Tiger-E and Panther-D.
well todays products explain why mass production isn't alwasy good. i prefer things that are handbuild. nonetheless im happy how the war turned out :P
M.r. Moon It's almost like every G.I was issued a Sherman when he was sent to Europe. We had the numbers. We could afford to sacrifice the two or three it would take to take out, or try to take out, one Tiger. Awesome tank. Even by todays standards.

interesting representation of history this tank
The attack was a total surprise, the Allies never heard them coming.
You wouldnt joke after reading this: "Michael Wittmann is most famous for his ambush of elements of the British 7th Armoured Division, during the Battle of Villers-Bocage on 13 June 1944.

After almost 100 years, this wonderful war machine is still impressive.
I don't think they were around in WWI 😅
Oh my god the sound of that thing starting gave me goosbumps and made me smile and giggle like a child
WOW!!!! that is truly a beast, its kinda eerie watching it move knowing its history, what it must of been like to see a bunch of these heading towards u. amazing restoration - a credit to those who keep it alive
I always forget just how massive these tanks were until I see this video pop up every now and then
The shift from first to second was brutal.
I'm not sure if a Tiger works like that...
They had no idea how to operate it. Even the engine start was a failure, it wasn't spinning fast enough compared to other videos I've seen.

The VK 45.01P had an engine system that was deemed "too complex." Plus, its counterpart (the VK 45.01H) was easier to maneuver.
Судя по некоторым восторженным комментариям, некоторым в жизни просто не повезло сгореть за германских нацистов в их хваленом Тигре.
Jesus! Starting one of the worlds most feared armored death machines like it's a music box........love it!
The Germans just used the electric starter, the hand crank was a backup.
There are some sounds that truly leave the feeling of horror in a soul. The sounds of war machines coming to life, in order to end life. Pure terror.

We're talking about the Germans not the Russians lol. Every 6 hours my ass.
