If anyone is disliking due to that, then it is ridiculous, you did a fantastic job explaining it in a concise way. There's been recent rule changes with the black card being introduced, but you covered the core of the game i feel. Mentioning the tribalism aspect, of people representing their local county only, would be good to touch on next time, or even the ancient history of it being played by warriors.
Cú Chulainn I agree it's a good vid explaining the rules all things considered. The black card btw was only introduced in Gaelic Football, not in hurling. However in hurling the rules on taking a penalty have been changed: A penalty in hurling is now just one on one with the goalkeeper, and the ball must be struck outside 20m. Where before you lifted the ball with your hurl at 20 metres and could steal a couple of yards before hitting the ball.

I was at a summer camp, and my councelor was Irish. He brought 2 hurleys and a sliotar. he taught me how to hit it. We used to play a sort of catch with it. It was very fun.
Great job in explaining Hurling Ninh from an Irish man still playing the game. It is not easy to explain as I have found out many times when trying to explain to foreign friends. One or 2 small things I would advise on is that, a puck is not necessarily a restart in play, it is just hitting the ball with the stick(like the word kick in soccer). However when the goalkeeper restarts the play we say 'puck out'. An important point is that if the ball is hit wide by an attacker the goalkeeper gets a 'puck out' from his hands, not from the ground from the square in front of the goal, not from the 65m line. However, if the ball gets hit wide by a defender(on his own goal side) the attacking team gets a 'free puck' or commonly known as a '65' from the 65m line to try and score (generally a point). Also when the ball goes over the either side line the play is restarted with a 'sideline cut' we wouldn't really ever say 'puck' in this situation. A 'free puck' is not generally called that (however it is correct to say so) we generally say 'free-in' aka for the attacking team or 'free-out' for the defending team. Also in relation to a penalty or 'penalty puck' the rules have now changed. The reason being is that the players' are after developing a way to scoop the ball up and strike it from such close range that it could do serious damage to the defending players, now only the goalkeeper will defend the penalty. Check out videos of the Cork goalkeeper Anthony Nash and you'll see why(incredible power and technique) ua-cam.com/video/Vq3gUOtzSL0/v-deo.html You did a great job Ninh. If the above seems pedantic I just wanted to add a bit of value to it. Not to offend or demean your good work :)
Thanks for the primer. This video was created in 2015 so any changes in the rules will obviously not have been updated. The reason these videos work is because it covers the bare-bones in less than 5 minutes. If I was to go into any great detail like that, it would be unwatchable. Thanks again for the comments! :)
Hi Ninh, yes I understand that and that's why I think it's a great video. Some of my points of terminology are just extras to add value, and the rule change obviously isn't relevant to the video just an FYI to the audience. However, the only obvious equivocation is at 2:27 where it says that 'if the ball is hit wide by an attacker the defending team gets a puck out at the 65m line. This is not the case, if the ball is hit wide by an attacker the defending team's goalkeeper gets a puck out from the small square directly in front of the goal. Keep up the good work buddy. Delighted to see you enjoy our nations games and are spreading the message of such a great and ancient sport :)
In Ireland now and the Irish Nationals are happening today. I am a hurling novice. What a great game!!! thanks for the rules explanation. I'm a new fan.
Awesome, glad you like this Hurling video and that it helped you understand the rules of the game. Check out my other video on Gaelic Football which is also played in Ireland under similar rules ... ua-cam.com/video/vSOe-USZzok/v-deo.html&vl
Hey Nick. Welcome back! Hurling is a hard sport to try and find without subscribing to all the Sky Channels, but I'd love to see an All Ireland Final someday. I think we played shinty once in school and we ended up whacking each other rather than the ball. Thanks for stopping by, sharing this video would help me out a great deal :)
***** Cheers Nick! The Scots would say that about anything - shinty is better than hurling, whisky is better than water, Celtic is better than Real Madrid. The list goes on ...
Odd i've seen the Camanachd final on youtube there seemed to be a paltry crowd at it.Hurlings equivalent gets eighty thousand attending every year.Maybe people are mad about shinty in a part of scotland, but it can't enjoy widespread sport with only 5000 at its showpiece event. Its a fine game though and anyway if your local team plays it its going to better game than hurling ,because they don't play hurling and vice versa in ireland if your local team plays hurling thats a better game than anything else.
Thanks! The sport makes much more sense now. It's nearly a combination of lacrosse and rugby in some ways. Looks like great fun. Now I need to go back to Ireland when the Senior Championship has matches scheduled.
Goalies are savages, LOVE IT! I wouldn’t wanna be hit with that ball in the midsection, ouchie... I played goalie in Field Hockey an had minimal padding, these guys are Beasts...
Truly the most amazing sport in the world! Came here to understand the handling rules. Much like Aussie rules but with a flat bat. Lacrosse, rugby, and baseball...combined.

+lorcan O'Reilly Thanks man, I appreciate the back up! American here. My work colleagues in Cork are stoked about this weekend's championship so I decided I should watch the game too (stateside) and figured I better get a basic understanding of the rules. VERY helpful video! And shout-out to the Denver Regulators for linking it on their website. Google is my friend. 😊
Turned on the TV tonight and there was Hurling. In Canada this is a rare sight. Never new the rules until i hit your great explanation. Thanks for the rules for the rookies.
Noah Shumka Wow, Hurling was on TV in Canada? I don't think I've seen it over there either? Thanks for the kudos on my video explanation on Hurling! Check out my channel for more explanations of weird and wonderful sports. And be sure to share this video and subscribe :)
I understand the rules but was curious about your research. Really enjoyed it. After a player has bounced the ball twice off his hurley instead of passing it if he wishes,he can then bounce it from ground back to stick and start again, being allowed to once again bounce two off his stick. This can be done indefinitely. Thanks for the video. Hope I was a little helpful
My friends got me into this sport. Once a year there is a hurling match at Fenway Park in Boston MA. They went last year so this year I decided to go. I didn't understand any of it but I was fascinated by it. More manlier than American football
Today I heard about this sport for the first time, I've watched a few videos and I loved it. I used to play field hockey, and I see many rules that are similar to hockey. I don't know why soccer/football is such a big deal around the word when there certainly are much interesting and challenging sports out there. One question, do women also play this sport? Are there any women's league in Ireland? Or can this sport be played by men and women all together? That'd be awesome.
They do play a version of this game called 'Camogie' - which is played only by women. It's virtually the same with a few rules changes. Men and women generally don't play together because of this. Glad you like this video, be sure to subscribe and check out my channel for more like this.
+Andrew Dougherty Cool, thanks Andrew, I'm glad that you found this video on Hurling useful in understanding the rules. Just watch a few more games and I'm sure you'll get it down pat. Thanks for stopping by, be sure to share this video and subscribe :)
I was looking up vintage hockey helmets and found my way over here via Cooper Sk100s... And look at this? A sport I'd never heard of. Thanks for the excellent video!
I’m Irish but been living in Australia since I was 12 (I’m 15 now). Probably one of the biggest things I miss about Ireland is hurling. There is a very small hurling league here and my brothers all play but there is no camogie :(

Cool, glad this video helps! I hope you enjoy the games when you come and see them in Ireland. Subscribe and check out my channel for more like this :)
Wow wow wow!!! Great job. Now I know a lot about the rules of Gaelic Football and Hurling. Thank you :) Seems like a great sport and a lot of skills are required to play Hurling. In fact, a lot more skillful a player has to be in Hurling than in Gaelic Football. I think it's a lot more interesting than hockey... And yeah, I hope that all the on field players including the referees wear abdomen guards! :P
Hi Arka Sarkar (again) Believe it or not, the only protection they wear is a helmet with a face cage. They don't wear padding anywhere else and if they get hit - it probably hurts!
Ninh Ly Oops! Is it? Are you sure they don't wear an abdomen guard? In fact in cricket, batsmen, wicket keeper and any fielder while fielding at silly point or short leg (if required) wear abdomen guard. Also in hockey, players wear them too...
Arka Sarkar Check it out: www.gaa.ie/coaching-and-games-development/rules-and-specifications/rules-of-specifications/equipment/ Some people may wear them, but I'm pretty sure most don't as it's not mandatory.
+Nathan Metcalf It's only known in Ireland and Britain - shame really. It's pretty cool. Thanks Nathan, I appreciate the comments. Be sure to share this video and subscribe :)
Amir Fahmi sigh... People always say that about ice hockey as well. Give it time, you'll get used to it eventually, and other games will look like they are going in slow motion.
Thank you for this very helpful video.I have only been watching & following Gaelic Games in the last year, but love both. Not sure I have a favourite but,at the highest level, hurling is brilliant to watch.
this is a great video explaining the sport of hurling clearly. As GAA supporter I thank you for taking the time to create this. P.S As for the few nitpicking, perhaps it all they have!
I'm a kiwi but I'm very much in love with my irish ancestry and found hurling only probably 10 minutes ago and so this helped a lot in understanding and since it's quite a fresh idea I should understand it
Hey this is great. I'm going to see my first hurling match Sunday at Fenway Park in Boston, Massachusetts, USA. We are really excited, and now we get to actually understand the game.
+shawn wheeler That's awesome, I'm sooo jealous! I'd love to watch the AIG Hurling Classic @ Fenway. I hope you guys enjoy the game and let me know how it goes. Be sure to share this video and subscribe :)
Ninh Ly Its the super11s version. Its a version designed to be played on smaller pitches such as soccer pitches and gridiron pitches etc. They changed the rules to much that even irish people didnt understand the rules. The GAA pitch is huge compared to american sports grounds and some modification was needed, but not to this extent. However it was good to see hurling in such an iconic venue though
+shawn wheeler The teams who played also did not play their Senior A players, such as Joe Canning, but instead they played their Senior C almost like 3rd sting players
It looks bloody dangerous. I would not want to be hit with a hurley on any part of my body but particularly not my face. That looks like a distinct possibility.
It can happen, for sure. And it does. But these players know what they're doing and how to avoid being blasted. They also wear helmets so at least something is protected. Overall, it's a pretty cool sport to play and watch.
Helmet's used to not be mandatory up to 2010 (2007 for those 21 and under). I imagine a lot of coaches already enforced them with underage teams though. I had to get one when I played as a kid, pretty sure I was forced to get one by the club.
I should add that I am a Yank, one ,like so many others who saw this sport as a kid for a split second on the ABC Wide Word of Sports and thought."That is a sport I must learn about"And now I have and given that I have a brain.Go Donegal
+Andrew Dougherty I used to watch that too ... they only showed like 30 seconds of an obscure sport and you'd be like ... "whaaaaa?". But yes, my vids explain complex sports like this ... easily! :)
+Andrew Dougherty It take it you have donegal connections.Funny enough hurling is very weak in donegal. So supporting the hurling team will give only grief. However the Gaelic football team is very good they won the all ireland 4 years ago and were in the final last year.Hurling is strong in the southern half of the country and football in the northern half except for kerry in the southwest which are best gaelic football team of alltime. My grandmothers people were dohertys, but from mayo.
Forrest Novak You were lucking all GAA activity which includes hurling has been stopped due to the coronavirus outbreak for two weeks at least ,but will probably much longer
@@unluckyno1352 I imagine so.All sports have stopped even the sports that don't attract crowds ,no training even. We will get back to them most important thing is to stay healthy and safe.
+dminalba Probably not. It's barely played in Scotland anymore and there's no demand to ever justify making the video. Thanks for the suggestion, be sure to share this video and subscribe :)
I first saw a game 12 years ago when I was in a pub in Strathphifer Scotland. And i fell in love with it on the spot. I'm a Queenslander (Aussie). It's a pity that it's not played here.
Yes I watched it on a feed here in the U.S. and in all places South Florida North Miami to be exact I am half Irish and I was immediately transfixed by the play of this game and the announcers were talking at one point in the play of the match about a blood point the gentleman in the video did not say anything about it would you care to elaborate on it or did I just hear something else during the match I am interested in the game and would like to be educated on the nuances of the game. It would be helpful on another point why hasn't the NFL been interested in playing in Ireland once instead of Mexico or the U.K. I think it would be great and it would probably open up Hurling to new fans across the globe I think it should be in the Olympics they have just about every other sport in the world in it personally I would rather watch that than Ice curling
@Oisin Molloy that's a bit sexist I play hurling and I'm a girl and my team is senior and won senior hurling three years in a row now. So no it's not a PROPER MANS game!!!!!

Thanks for the great video. I’m in Kilkenny for the championship between Kilkenny and limerick and it starts in a couple hours and until this video I had no idea what I am about to experience. Great job!!!
thanks a lot for your videos on hurling and gaelic football from austria. it's weird how i didn't even know these 2 existed. hurling especially looks absolutely great. how a sport that seems to demand so much skill from its players and furthermore seems to be that great to watch is known that little in many places around the world is a miracle to me.

Field hockey mixed with Cricket and Rugby ☺️
I am obsessed with these videos. Amazing! So glad I found this channel.
Thanks Aman, much appreciated.
Thank you for making this. It helped me (a Canadian who has never seen or heard of Hurling) get a basic grasp of the game.
Thanks Alex, much appreciated.
Yeah, these videos that I make introduce things to complete beginners who don't know what they are. Hopefully you'll be able to watch a game and know what's going on!

So in a way it's like lacross. I play rugby at the Irish culture centre and I always see them playing in the other field it looks really fun! Thanks for explaining the rules! 👍
Dylan Clifford Kind of, except that it's a lot easier to score points. Give it a go, you'll probably enjoy it! Thanks for stopping by, be sure to share this video and subscribe :)
Check out videos of the Cork goalkeeper Anthony Nash and you'll see why(incredible power and technique) ua-cam.com/video/Vq3gUOtzSL0/v-deo.html
You did a great job Ninh.

I loved watching Hurling when I was in Ireland! I live in Scotland currently, however, and we're mad about our Shinty over here!!!
Ninh Ly Shared! The Scots swear that shinty is the better game... all I can tell so far is that the stick is smaller in shinty!
Sure Shinty derives from Ireland, it is a Gaelic sport.
Thanks! The sport makes much more sense now. It's nearly a combination of lacrosse and rugby in some ways. Looks like great fun. Now I need to go back to Ireland when the Senior Championship has matches scheduled.
Thanks. By the way, the Irish will always argue that their sport was invented first!
I really enjoy your videos. There are a lot of sports I'd either never heard of or knew absolutely nothing about. Thank you, Ninh.
Thanks for the comments Jacob, be sure to share this video and subscribe :)
Cheers! Watching this will help me to enjoy watching Limerick beat Cork at the 2021 GAA Hurling All-Ireland Senior Championship
Nah boi, you mean the other way around ⚪🔴
@@TheRemakersIreland You might be right... Can't find a way to watch it from here in the states anyways... :(
+Ninh Ly The penalty rules have changed since this, only the keeper is allowed to be in the goal during the penalty.

Truly the most amazing sport in the world! Came here to understand the handling rules. Much like Aussie rules but with a flat bat. Lacrosse, rugby, and baseball...combined.
Thanks for a great overview! Gonna watch the All Ireland final tomorrow!

Very straight forward and informative description of Hurling. Thank you!
thank you for this. i remembered watching hurling on abc's wide world of sports when i had to be like 10. it was insane, no other i had seen was anything like it.
+doug marcus Thanks Doug - yes, it's a little insane. But it's a cool sport to watch! Thanks for stopping by, be sure to share this video and subscribe :)
Ninh, fair play to you. This video is a great intro to the sport, and should get the basics across to anyone.
Thanks Sean! :) I tried very hard to explain hurling as simply as possible whilst trying to cover most of the main rules. I got a bit of a hard time with the mispronunciation, but I've explained that to the nth degree. I appreciate your comments! :)
This seems really weird, but not in a stupid way. It actually looks pretty entertaining.
I have recently discovered this support and find it much more exciting than soccer. Thank you for the rule breakdown!
Just a heads up when the ball goes out of bounds it's called a sideline cut but great video!
You summarised it perfectly. Well done.
great video as an irishman I could honestly care less on pronouncing the word. just a few picky lads giving out don't worry buddy. have you ever watched international rules you should consider that for a video
+lorcan O'Reilly Thanks man, I appreciate the back up! And yes, a few people have suggested International Rules, but seeing as though it's mainly an exhibition sport and it's not played at an amateur or professional level anywhere, there seems little point in making a video about it. Nice idea though. Thanks for stopping by. Be sure to share this video and subscribe :)
i got a good laugh out of you mispronouncing it my self if there was any mistake to make this is definitely not the worst
I don't know why anyone would dislike this video cos it's so interesting

The Irish are something incredibly special.
They certainly are, yes.
Thank you. Reading a book set in Ireland and this sport is referenced. Very interesting. I would love to watch a full game - especially live.

Really appreciate you making this video, mate. We can finally watch hurling in the US.
Hey, don't worry about the mispronunciation great explanation. Spread the word.
You'd be surprised how much flak I get for that. But I don't let it get to me.
Geez...people need to relax about the mispronunciation who cares...
Very well explained My grandpa played this game and loved it Don’t see it in the States except occasionally Gaelic Park in the Bronx
Thanks! Hurling is starting to become popular in the US now, so I think it's just going to take a while.

I’m Irish but been living in Australia since I was 12 (I’m 15 now). Probably one of the biggest things I miss about Ireland is hurling. There is a very small hurling league here and my brothers all play but there is no camogie :(
Shame. It's a great sport - too bad it's not really played anywhere other than Ireland.

Outstanding! Adding a match to my bucket list...
Yeah, that makes two of us. If you ever get tickets to the All Ireland Final, apparently that's the best.

Wow wow wow!!!
Great job. Now I know a lot about the rules of Gaelic Football and Hurling. Thank you :)
Seems like a great sport and a lot of skills are required to play Hurling. In fact, a lot more skillful a player has to be in Hurling than in Gaelic Football. I think it's a lot more interesting than hockey...
And yeah, I hope that all the on field players including the referees wear abdomen guards! :P
Hi Arka Sarkar (again)
Believe it or not, the only protection they wear is a helmet with a face cage.
Arka Sarkar Check it out:
www.gaa.ie/coaching-and-games-development/rules-and-specifications/rules-of-specifications/equipment/
Some people may wear them, but I'm pretty sure most don't as it's not mandatory.
Seán Leahy Wow that's good, I hope it is the tradition and pride of this great old game :)
I read in Wiki that it predates even Christianity!
Seán Leahy Is rugby bigger than Gaelic football and Hurling in Ireland? And are these two games also big in Northern Ireland?

Hey this is great. I'm going to see my first hurling match Sunday at Fenway Park in Boston, Massachusetts, USA. We are really excited, and now we get to actually understand the game.
+shawn wheeler That's awesome, I'm sooo jealous! I'd love to watch the AIG Hurling Classic @ Fenway. I hope you guys enjoy the game and let me know how it goes. Be sure to share this video and subscribe :)
+shawn wheeler Unfortunately that game was watered down version, because of the field size.Consequently they were huge rule changes,
stoney71 It was. I watched it and thought ... this ain't right!
I was thinking similarly that I would fear being hit by a ball that had just been struck hard, intended for a long distance.
In Ireland adults and children get hit all the time but we just get up and get in with the game.
Most hits are on hand or shin
Helmet's used to not be mandatory up to 2010 (2007 for those 21 and under). I imagine a lot of coaches already enforced them with underage teams though. I had to get one when I played as a kid, pretty sure I was forced to get one by the club.
I'm going May 11 to see my first hurling match in Jackson, TN. Can't wait.
Sweet! Have a cool time!
Andrew Dougherty boi you can't have much of a brain if you follow Donegal in hurling

U mean Polo?
Oisin Molloy lol Oisin u go to scoil na mainstreach
