Being almost 50 yrs old I've got to really explore all the great 70s bands I heard as a kid, and IMO one thing is for certain, and that is that a hell of a lot of unbelievably great music came out between the years 1967-1980, and 2 these guy's are bad ass!

Actually 3 guys, most people forget about Frank Beard, the Drummer. If you like ZZ Top, try listening to these bands as well, Lynyrd Skynyrd, .38 Special, Molly Hatchet, just to name a few.

1975 im in the second grade North Carolina. My uncle picked me up one day in his 1969 Plymouth roadrunner. He cut this song on and my life literally changed from that moment. Up until then i heard nothing that i can remember but country music and gospel. Needless to say if i heard country music again it wasnt me playing it. 😮

Anyone remember KXRX in the late eighties? One time we were drivin down I5 and we were toasted and the radio started sayin "X" in all the speakers in the car like a ball bouncing around faster and faster until this song started. It was fuckin AWESOME.

Saw them for the first time back in the mid 70's. First time I can remember seeing a drummer wearing headphones. And he needed them, the crowd about 30,000 was absolutely out of their minds.
If you've never gone, you just gotta catch 'em live!

A great song from the "Texas history" period of ZZ Top's song catalog. It tells the story about the "X" radio stations started by Dr. John Brinkley across the Mexican border as a medium to promote his, umm, "interesting" therapy for male impotence. Stringing multiple copies together demonstrates how the tempo speeds up over the course of the song.

I was four years old in 1966, and when my mom and dad would travel from Houston to San Antone, the radio reception gave out less than halfway, which is at Flatonia,Texas. My mom was more liberal on her musical taste than the ol' man.He was strictly country back then.Anyway, ma' would dial in Xerp or Xerf.Don't recall exactly the correct lettering, but they did play a big variety of music, and had some bizarre commercials. The '60s&early '70s were good times until the first oil embargo of 1973.lt seems like the world changed for the worst after that.

One of my favorite things about their catalog of tunes are the references to places around Texas that meant something to them. La Grange, Balinese, Houston, etc. Also, blowtorch outlaw radio stations just across the Mexican border.

Definitely appreciate the beardless wonder..certainly the earlier
albums. Before the generic 80s drum sound everyone and their pet turtle had. All bombast and no nuance. Balinese is killer but got zero airplay. Didn't matter. Skipped school to listen to
Tres Hombres, Fandango and Rio Grande Mud and drink beer that didn't belong to me. Until I drank it. This stuff is classic

Watched an interview with Billy Gibbons recently. He told a story very similar to this during said interview. When Dan Rather asked him if what he said is the real story, Billy smiled & said, "Well, that's the version I'm telling today." He puts different slants on the origins of their name according to whatever mood strikes him.

Actually the band was going to call itself ZZ King, to honor B.B. King, but thought the name would just get lost in the possible confusion, so they went with ZZ Top, feeling B.B. King was at the Top of the Blues World. www.todayifoundout.com/index.php/2011/01/where-the-band-name-zz-top-came-from/

3rd Verse same as the 1st! Henry the Eighth I am, I am.. Wait Fer, It!...
How does THAT go again? Oh yeah! Lyrics
I'm Henry the eighth I am
Henry the eighth I am, I am
I got married to the widow next door
She's been married seven times before
And every one was an Henry (Henry)
She wouldn't have a Willy or a Sam (no Sam)
I'm her eighth old man, I'm Henry
    Henry the eighth I am
Second verse same as the first
I'm Henry the eighth I am
Henry the eighth I am, I am
I got married to the widow next door
She's been married seven times before
And every one was an Henry (Henry)
She wouldn't have a Willy or a Sam (no Sam)
I'm her eighth old man, I'm Henry
    Henry the eighth I am
I'm Henry the eighth I am
Henry the eighth I am, I am
I got married to the widow next door
She's been married seven times before
And every one was an Henry (Henry)
She wouldn't have a Willy or a Sam (no Sam)
I'm her eighth old man, I'm Henry
    Henry the eighth I am

The " X" was a border blaster radio station in Mexico. They would crank up the power to a million or more watts and broadcast world wide at night so the illegal brothers up here in the states could hear their own music.
