My great-grandfather was a Puerto Rican who served directly under TR in the rough riders, what a great honor it was to have someone like him in my family.

Henry Nash a member of the Rough Riders was also a Thomasite (From USS Thomas). They improved the the education system established by the Spanish in the Philippines. He taught in Macabebe and became the superintendent of schools in his district.

I would expect NG to do their homework. The 1st Volunteer Cav was not founded by Teddy Roosevelt, but by Leonard Wood, who was Teddy's commanding officer. And Teddy was not the first to believe we should assist the Cuban in getting ride of the Spanish. John Quitman, while serving as Governor of Mississippi, was forced to resign and face charges of violating US neutrality laws over 40 years before the Rough Riders were formed. Quitman had offered to assist Cuban rebels in fighting the Spanish. Charges were later dropped.
According to Edmund Morris in the rise of Theodore Roosevelt’s, TR was offered command but deferred to his good friend wood who had more military leadership experience.

I was very surprised and disappointed to see that National Geographic chose Glen Beck to be in one of their programs.
Why?

I will say that an organization like national geographic should stear clear of politically controversial people for use in their shows as beck was used. He has spewed so much nonsense over the years that I don't find him a credible contributor when what is required is an honest objective account. Let him stick to what has made him worth. $200 million dollars net worth: conservative talk radio and tv. There are many great historians, most much more qualified than Beck, but more importantly less controversial.

I'm not the issue. He is. I'm writing a cooment of little significance. Beck has been chosen by national geo to speak to tens of thousands of people via one of their TV shows. It's wrong.
Not because of his politics. Because he is dead wrong. Spanish American war was never about spreading Americanism. It was about the Monroe Doctrine and getting the Spanish out of our hemisphere.
