11/22/63 is my favourite Stephen King “science fiction” novel. I’ll never forget his description of how a root-beer float tasted in 1963. Heavy on nostalgia and a great take on a JFK what if. Published in 2011 but I couldn’t help think of it when you discussed Under the Dome. Love Children of Time. One of my rare audiobook listens for a long trip. Grabbed and held my attention. On some stops had to wait before getting out of the car just to find a suitable stopping point. Spiders!!
Interesting list. Someone gave me The Algebraist a few years ago, and as i never saw a review for it, i didn´t know where to put it in my TBR. Another coincidence is that i started reading Children of Time yesterday. Everybody seems to love this book
Alan Dean Foster is a much underrated writer , his original works are fantastic . He does more character building and world building in 200 pages then most writers do in 600 pages . His imagination of new worlds and aliens society's is incredible. A good place to start with him is Sentenced to Prism. It show what an great writer he is.
His book MIDWORLD is one of the very first sf novels I read. He, Heinlein and Andre (Alice) Norton were almost the entire genre of YA SF novels before there were such things.
Have read Ancillary Justice and Children of Time. Loved the latter and still not sure of the former. You obviously got more out Ancillary Justice than I did and I just thought it was marginally good. Children of Time I absolutely loved. One of my all time favorite SF reads.
Thank you for this video. I love Hamilton and Banks , I'm also getting into Ann Lekie and loving it. Alan Dean Foster and Connie Willis sound very interesting they will definitely go on my list😊
I’m always hesitant to click on these videos for fear of wanting to buy more books when I already have so many still unread. Great video, as always, thanks!
"The Children of Time" series is excellent. I have Fallen Dragon, Under the Dome and The Algegraist on my shelf so they have moved up my very lenghty TBR. First up is the omnibus edition of The Endymion i found last week.
Wow thats definitely a statement. I think for me it'd be Judas Unchained and Player of Games (or maybe use of weapons...I need to do a culture re read)
Some great books... loved the wind up girl, children of time is one of my favorites and I've just finished the last in the series children of memory... the series doesn't drop off as a lot do... it kept me engaged the whole way... love the algerbaist and the way iain m banks book ended the story ... Lutherius has to be one of my all time bad guys Need to read fallen dragon... it's on the shelf and one of the few Peter f Hamilton I haven't read Thanks for another great video Mike .. love your channel
All of those sound pretty interesting. I loved Children of Time. I read that when I had covid, so I had nothing to do but sit around and read, which, of course, was pretty great.
Children of Time is the only one I've read of these. Really want to read The Windup Girl. Controversially I don't really get on with PFH or IMB, but friends have said I may prefer the Algebraist to the Culture books.
@@FIT2BREAD will give the Algebraist a go for sure. Not sure if I will be revisiting the Culture though. Of the 4 I read I like Player of Games, but DNF Excession and Consider Phlebas and didn't like Use of Weapons.
@@FIT2BREAD yes! I bailed half way through season 2, kind of wished it had ended up on HBO or something. Couldn’t go as dark on basic cable, and I think it suffered for that reason.
I loved Passage, The Relic, Ancillary Justice and Children of Time. I have sworn off Iain Banks for good but I might give Fallen Dragon a go. Thanks as usual for interesting content and suggestions for new books.
The Windup Girl was one of the books that got me back into SF. I read it while living in Bangkok and could easily picture the city becoming like the way it is depicted in the book. Another book I recommend from the 2000s is River of Gods by Ian McDonald, which is set in a future India. Can anyone recommend another SF novel that takes place in Asia? (Aside from Remembrance of Earth's Past trilogy)
Awesome that must have been a great reading experience. River of Gods is another favorite. McDonalds' The Dervish House has time spent in Turkey. Three Body problem: China. I also have a translated works video also and u can find it on my video page.
Great video. I'm trying to get more 21st-century works into my tbr. For any Kindle readers, Fallen Dragon is only $2.99 (and is now part of my ever-growing digital tbr).
Like Lincolns Dream this is a great read with referances and easter eggs . Ever saw the movie Flatliners ? . And there is Wills humor . I am always interested in books about and dealing with death, sans the supernatural . This is a sweet/ bitter/ sweet read . See how much info you can identify .😉
I really enjoyed Children of time I have listened to 3 of his books cage of souls and dogs of War all so different but great story I really would have loved more of cage of souls but it ment to end with bit of a mystery
I got the wind-up girl but haven't read it yet glad you like it and found it a fast read don't plan to read the connie willis one always thought NDEs are really just dreams but recently saw funny vid of willis at a sci-fi-fi award show where harlan ellison actually grabbed her breast she just laughed it off sure wouldn't happen like that today

Yeah children of time is great. I read it and also recently listened to the audio book. I was surprised how much I liked atudiobook format for it
I love The Algebraist. Also just bought Relic on your recommendation. Thanks. 😎
let me know how relic goes for you. i think its very underrated
"the Windup Girl" I picked up at a library sale last year because of your solo review video you had done on it. Haven't read it yet though
I hope u like it when u eventually read it. I think u will

Great call. Thanks for sharing Gary.
His book MIDWORLD is one of the very first sf novels I read. He, Heinlein and Andre (Alice) Norton were almost the entire genre of YA SF novels before there were such things.
Foster's short story, 'With Friends Like These', which was available in a collection of the same name, has stuck in my mind since I read it in 1977!
Have read Ancillary Justice and Children of Time. Loved the latter and still not sure of the former. You obviously got more out Ancillary Justice than I did and I just thought it was marginally good. Children of Time I absolutely loved. One of my all time favorite SF reads.

Haha, can never have too many book
Great video! Pleased to say I've read most of those, but I didn't realise ADF was still writing, I'll watch out for that.
Thanks much

Nice. Endymion and Hyperion are so amazing
The Algebraist and Fallen Dragon are my favourite books from the respective authors.

It's a good audio book too... read by Mel Hudson

Loved Under the Dome! Found it impossible to put down, and probably the last book that he’s published that I’ve truly loved.
Def a page turner. Did u watch the TV series?
@@FIT2BREAD The Under the Dome TV show was very different than the book, not in a good way. I do not recommend it.
@jen m very different and no where near as good...I did enjoy it though (the 1st half)

Thanks Robert. I was frustrated at how poor the audio came out..
Cool
Thanks Shemiah
@@FIT2BREAD no biggie
I need to learn to read faster. LOL I think "Relic" is moving to the top of the list. That sounds fascinating.
