APC Smart-UPS 1500 New Batteries & Re-calibration - New Home Network Backup Power Supply, Yuasa NP18

- In this video I test and repair an APC Smart UPS 1500 battery backup unit I purchased from Facebook marketplace as faulty. I already owned another of these units from some years ago with a functional battery pack. This allowed me to test the new unit worked before ordering some cells for it.
I purchased this uninterruptible power supply unit because it was cheap and included the APC AP9630 Network Management add-in card that none of my other units have.
I hope to use this to run my entire home network including the modems, WiFi access points, pfSense firewall, home server, game server, NAS devices and more to keep them online for even longer when the power goes out.
The battery pack included with the new UPS is not an original APC model, but instead a third party replacement that had Yuasa cells. These are actually my go-to brand from previous good experiences with them. I'd never seen any acid leaks or major bulges occur on this brand until this video.
I replaced the batteries with the same, brand new Yuasa NP18-12B (12V 17.2Ah) cells and rebuilt the battery pack. They cost a bit more than other brands to purchase initially, but the extra bit of investment pays off in the long run in my opinion as they seem to live longer.
When you replace the batteries in these APC battery backup units you must also re-calibrate them with an appropriate load attached to ensure that the low battery alarm only goes off when it should. If you don't re-calibrate the unit then you will find the alarm keeps beeping constantly even when the batteries aren't actually running low!.
I plan to make a video on the APC AP9630 network management card setup and re-configuring my network rack in the near future so keep an eye out for that.

Just found your channel - Excellent content on UPC batteries, especially showing how the UPC works!
I have one like this UPS and I use it for my Photo flash when I do photo shoot outside in the nature with some model :) Very good and I get about 300 photo flashes from one charging.
Interesting - I like the recalibration method that you used. I use the application recalibration routine, but I think that your approach is better - I'll do that instead, as I just so happen to have a light like that available... thanks for sharing... 🙂
One tip to others: it is safer to connect the fuse last, in case you accidentally short the packs with your tools when connecting the UPS cables.
Came here to say this lol the pliers on the connector side first had me cringing waiting for the pop!
AND for when re-assembling - Fuse connects last!
@@k0nanick Due to my inattention, something sparked today. Does this affect the battery? I hope nothing happened to the batteries? After installing the APC SUA1500i in the UPS, they work, so maybe it will be ok.
Anyone know the model and specs of the battery
Thanks for the tutorial done. Please do a video on how to use or connect 1500watts APC UPS to a 100A solar battery.
Thank you very much!!!!!
Would the calibration method still work if I used something with a heavier load than 1/3 capacity? I have an RS1500-G, and run entire PC system off of it. The PC itself has a 1200W power supply. If I ran the PC and drained the UPS, after a 100% charge, would that calibrate the battery. My replacement battery pack is only 15 months old, and I just ordered a replacement, but prefer to get the full life out of it before installing a new one.
I personally would've wore gloves but great video
Very useful video and thanks for sharing, have 3 of these beasts and red light (change battery) on one unit has just turned on. I see there are 17.2AH or 20.0AH available, what is the standard?

Hi… what is the battery output voltage under load? Once power is disconnected
Do you think the APC back-ups pro 1000s performs a similar recalibration in the same way? I tried with a 100w load (on a 600w max unit) and it did nothing. Thanks
Dude, just a recommendation, get your self some small spanners 6/8/10 should and a baby set of sockets. Very hands on the links etc
What is the safest way to discharge the internal capacitors after turning off, unplugging from mains and unplugging the batteries? Does pressing the "0" button for 10 seconds accomplish this?
Have you thought about doing a video on the AP9630 NMC Mgmt. card?
I have and do indeed plan to make a video on the setup of the network management card and facilities. I've just not got around to deploying the unit yet but I know assigning an IP address can be tricky in some cases.

What if it over charges the battery before putting the load to start calibration.
Just picked up one of these, do you happen to have a user guide or owner's manual??
Have you got the service manual for this in english. APC Smart-UPS 1500.
Hello Sir, All good wishes from me, I am facing a problem with my APC smart UPS 1000U, batteries connected externally (12v +12v in series 80Ah and100Ah respectively.) when putting it to test and recharge the battery, it turns on, gives AC output for a while, (1 minute) and then turns Off and gives continuos long beep, stops charging and no AC output. How can I fix this? It does not give backup when disconnected from Mains. Please give me a solution to this if any. Thanks.
Hi, I got a question. Is that possible to set up these models to be off when the battery discharges to a specific voltage level, such as 24.5V?
I don't believe that is possible, but I've never had to try to set that up. They do automatically switch off when the battery is what it deems dead / low enough though. But I don't know what the threshold is for that to happen.
Sorry I can't be of more help.

I believe that is possible with the PowerChute software and a USB cable or with the Network Management Card via ethernet and a web browser.
I have an APC of 5000 rt smart ups it's indicate a led of red colour on the panel at first on two days ago i changes all batteries i removed all old and put a new batteries it's use battery 16 pcs of 5N,so when i switch on after changeng all batteries the ups it switch correct and use it for two day but yesterday morning the ups failed to work and indicates an red LED on the pannel until now
I found one of these in a skip and I’ll be honest I had no idea what it was and it doesn’t turn on so yeah I did find the video helpful and does anybody have any idea how it works and how do use it I reckon it’s been out of order a couple months because of the testing sticker on it
Thank you. May we use 12 volt 12ah or 12volt 7ah instead of 12volt 17.2ah
You probably could (although the current capacity of such a battery might be a concern at high loads), but you'd lose runtime in doing so. The best option for this UPS model is a pair of 22Ah cells. Higher runtime, and will last longer. They're also typically AGM type, which are better than FLA/VRLA types. Cross-reference UB12220
well i have ups 350 and i have 12 volt deep cycle battery 75A 900WATTS run much longer with 40A FUSED
Set your float charge down one click and you'll never have another bulged battery. Will also extend battery life
just change battery used deep cycle battery get much better life 12Volt 100A Deep cycle battery
@@jacksmith3951 thats true but deep cycles vent and in an enclosed area that's dangerous
the old battery had a date of 2013 stamped on it.
Very well spotted! I'm not sure how I managed to miss it. That makes them around 8 years old in that case.

When the batteries go bad do they get real real hot? like Very hot to the hold or handle? Or is it something wrong with the unit. I was going to replace the Batteries but not sure the unit is good with it as hot as it was.
My experience most bad batteries that will not take a charge Do Not get hot when attempted to charge, unless there is damage somewhere. To sort out the issue assuming the batteries get real hot when they are charging in the UPS, then something is wrong. The first action is to stop charging in the UPS as continue charging could cause a battery fire, and the fire can spread. Take the batteries out and try to charge them with a external charger, one at a time. Monitor the charging constantly, do not leave them over night. If they still get hot then there is a short in the battery and it should be disposed off to a recycling facility. If the battery charges fine without getting hot then your UPS has a short. If the UPS is out of warranty which I suspect, turn it into a recycling facility.
@@michaelmlee2964 I choose to replace, it was not worth my house burning down over a UPS.
So help me how can i solve this problem on my ups
What are this used for? I have no idea of what they are good for?
This is an uninterruptible power supply. It will protect computer and server equipment from power outages and bad power conditions like (limited) surges, and too low/too high voltages. It comes with driver software that can shut down a server gracefully when the battery gets low during a power outage.
This is a professional unit, quite expensive when new but it comes with quality pure sine wave output.
¿Que dice harry que, que dice?
that's not how you calibrate the batteries, i believe. You're supposed to console in and change some values.
This is a pure sine wave ups?
Yes it is!
I have ups 350 and I hack it get run more 7 hours I have 4 12 volt lead acid battery I have 3 12 volt lead acid battery 7.2Amp each and 20Amp lead acid battery and 40Amp fused for my ups and I was testing it today with my laptop battery cant charge so I plug in my laptop in my ups at 4:00pm today its 11:19pm and my ups is still running been on battery 7hour and 20minutes now still running
Change the battery 12volt deep cycle battery 100A 2 12 Volt 100A each run much bettery those battery life sucks i have ups 350 i have one 12Volt 75A Deep cycle battery with 40A fused on it run much better
not a intrest
Can you leave the unit on while changing the batteries??
I often do - but I've never run a calibration on new batteries.
Hello Sir, regarding my last comment I would be very thankful if a genuine service manual with repairing tips is uploaded on my W/app number. Thanks.
