APC Smart-UPS 750 Gets New Batteries & Re-calibrated - Home Network Backup Power Supply (Yuasa NP7)

- In this video I switch out the batteries in one of my APC Smart-UPS battery backup units (750VA model) as the alarm was sounding.
This uninterruptible power supply unit runs my entire home network including the modems, WiFi access points, pfSense firewall, home server, NAS devices and more to keep them online even when the power cuts out.
I replaced the batteries with some brand new Yuasa NP7-12 (12V 7Ah) cells. These are my favorite brand to use as I've never yet had any acid leaks or majorly bulges occur on this brand. They cost a bit more to purchase initially but the extra bit of investment pays off in the long run in my opinion as they also seem to live longer.
When you replace the batteries in these APC battery backup units you must then re-calibrate them with an appropriate load attached to ensure that the low battery alarm only goes off when it should. If you don't re-calibrate the unit then you will find the alarm keeps beeping constantly even when the batteries aren't actually running low!.
In this video I log that process and also relocate the unit to my new home networking rack with the recently build 2U Compact & Silent home server and my 1U low power silent pfSense firewall.
I will be making a home network video very soon on this setup also so subscribe and keep an eye out for that!

One safety tip - if you're testing or calibrating it's best to leave the supply plugged in to an outlet with the switch off. This disconnects the supply but importantly leaves the earth connected. By removing the plug you are also removing the earth connection.
Between live when outputting on battery back up and mains earth will give you 0 volts. Bit like how a shaver point works for safety idea. So having an earth connected makes no difference. In fact it’s safer to have it unplugged as relying on the isolator on the socket it could be faulty though if likely agree it’s slim. Also most socket switches are single pole only breaking the line.
A hardware CPU recalibrate need at least 30% of constantly load (no more than +-5% fluctuation -this is very important-) until battery dies.
Excellent tutorial! thanks!!
Excellent tutorial on battery replacement and "recalibrating" batteries
Well done, thank you for taking the time.
The batteries in that unit are hot-swappable once you pull the battery disconnect plug out of the back. No need to turn anything off or even take it off the shelf.
Apparently you can turn off the beeping
"The UPS switches to battery operation automatically if the utility power fails. While running on battery, an alarm beeps four times every 30 seconds. Press the button to silence this alarm. If the utility power does not return, the UPS continues to supply power to the connected equipment until the battery is fully discharged. "
MAJOR props for using very goos batteries. theres even a better version of these.. the np35 or npx45..
I don't see why anyone wouldn't invest in decent batteries for a piece of critical equipment like this. There isn't even much price difference between these and generic cheap Chinese brands.
Thanks for the feedback! :)

Great job sir thanks
Maybe you can make a tutorial about installing the software, im having difficulty installing it and i dont know why!.
Do you know how to download software to him? And run the software
which app did you use?? to calibrate ups
buena noche me puedes informar donde puedo descargar el programa para conectar mi UPS por usb...gracias
Wow, where abouts are you in the UK, that input voltage is high! Mine is usually between 229-240 volts, with the highest I've seen of 243.
I'm located North-West - Near Manchester/Liverpool.
I live close-ish to a large substation / transformer site which is probably one of the reasons for the high input voltage.
During the early hours at off-peak times the voltage often rises as high as 254 volts and the UPS units over voltage protection begins to kick in and out.
Where did you buy the new batteries from?
I have same model. Any reason why no lights come on at all?
Have you got the battery connector installed at the rear? Do you have some cells/batteries installed, too?
If not connected to the mains, you may have to hold the power button down for a few seconds until the unit begins to beep, then release it to power-on without utility power.
Hope this helps!

And also its not showing me the load, what can it be?

Is your way, can work for apc br900gi ? My ups, can't charging after replaced the battery.

I hit up the Internet time machine for the sw
Can you send me setup link or softwer how i can maning setting
software name
What the software you used to calibrate this ups..?
Hi, The calibration can be done without any software by simply connecting a load and running the batteries down from 100% until the unit powers itself off as I do in this video. The software I used to look at the details within the UPS is APC's own 'Power Chute' utility.
