  • @danebrewer10

    I think the thing with front drag reels is that the drag washers can be made bigger so you get more power out of them,particularly if you're after his fish, or.ones that fight hard. Rear drag reels with the fast change spools have obviously only a rather small drag system, I may be wrong, but from my experience, a front drag reel tends to have a smoother drag than a rear drag model too.....

    Excellent Graeme,
    Tony is very informative and adds loads to your vids. I think sometimes i go too heavy on main line to avoid shockleaders but of course that greatly reduces casting distance and after a while the line goes all crinkly. Tonys right in that it takes forever to change spools. Surely in todays technology we can design a quick release.
    Steve in Fife.

      Steve, In the film you also see Penn 8000, and these have titanium shaft which won't flex as much as the shaft of these scora 100 will, and they also change spool somewhat easier. (I own both brands, and find the penn is the better one.)
      When the shaft warbles under stress caused by weeds or a nice fish in a strong current, the akios locks up.
      Since the penn has a much stronger shaft, this does not happen that fast.
      Kind regards, Jaak

    I use 60-70 lb braid for the shock leader, much better than nylon. No clicking it's way through the rod rings as nylon does. Just use a good finger stall for distance casting.

    I've got the Penn Surfblaster 8000 and it comes with both the long and short spools, for about £70.00 it was a great deal. Nice to hear Tony's point of view, you can always get good advice from Tony ... Thanks again Graeme

    • @Jaak_the_Belgian
      @Jaak_the_Belgian 7 років тому +2

      Hi David. The surfblaster 8000 spools are long ones and can be used on the affinity 8000 as well. You really mean deep and shallow, not shorter (which would not work). I swapped my shallow affinity spools for deep surfblaster spools and neither of us has regretted we did so. Except for the titanium parts, these surfblaster and affinity reels are much alike. I wanted the stronger shaft, so I paid a little more.
      Kind regards, Jaak

    im dying to get some beach gear since i started watching these vids,think im gonna spend a few hundred quid and buy a couple of rods and reels,everyone seems to rate penn surfblasters and for a multiplier im thinking a daiwa tournament,think these are about £100 each and then another £200 for a couple of rods,id love to get some smoothhounds and rays,havent been sea fishing for years but id love to get into it after watching loads of these films.

    • @jayson2171
      @jayson2171 7 років тому +2

      matt gosling you really don't need to spends loads of money. I spent about £50 on my whole set up when I started sea fishing. I've caught both rays and smooth hounds on it with no issues plus they were a good size. I'm looking to upgrade my reel now, just because I want better casting performance, but you really don't need to spend hundreds of pounds, especially if you're only just getting into sea fishing

    will I be at a disadventage using my shinano st8000 bait runners for spinning? i have wondered how to get a little spinner out a fair way. Does using a fox warrior carp rod affect negativly, for example do spinning rods have different setups? Ta Adam

    • @TAFishing
      @TAFishing  6 років тому

      I wouldn't use either of those for light spinning..Totally unbalanced for small lures,you just need to get setup with a light spinning rod outfit.Check out the Nomura range if your tackle shop stocks them.They seem to get it right,and a 1000 small reel with 10lb line will probably suit .

    Akios scora's are ok for clean beach fishing, any rough ground and they will self destruct. The penn is a better slightly better built reel.
    As for the push on spool, maybe clean beach but any heavy ground work and I can't see it being much use.
    Saying that, all I fish is heavy ground.

  • @brentnanita3939
    @brentnanita3939 5 років тому +1

    Penn Slammer 10500 is the best. those reels dont hold enough line. Penn spin reels can get wet and wont get sand in them. Can hold 500yds of 80lb braid and 50lbs of drag. Can land any beast you will hook up on from the beach.

    • @TAFishing
      @TAFishing  5 років тому +1

      Agree on the amount of line they actually don't take.If you fish the cast out and walk back on a flooding tide system,then you can soon be looking at the base of the spool.

    @larsvegas1505 7 років тому +1

    Id say a push on spool would not be ideal from a engineering standpoint.. it makes the reel more complicated, so more components to break and with that more heavy. Just look at small reels that have this system, they are overall like 10-30% heavier then the front brake ones.. Also the drag on rear end reels tends to be a bit less smooth overall. Also if ur going to change the spool ur prob standing near ur fishing bag anyway,, could just place the cap there or in your pockets. Anyways I've never lost that part.
    If ur going to a spinning reel just get one that has a nice seal and no anti reverse button for water to get in... that way u've got the least stuff to go wrong. (and always rinse after fishing).

    • @DjDolHaus86
      @DjDolHaus86 7 років тому

      Clip on spools don't need to be heavier, more complicated or rear drag. I've got a set of Okuma's that have a push button release on the spool, smooth front drag and its not noticeably heavier. You can also convert conventional front drag systems to a quick drag by adding a few washers and that makes unscrewing the spool take way less turns. The reason manufacturers don't often use clip on spools is purely down to manufacturing cost, no matter how much they say they are committed to quality they are all there to make money at the end of the day

    • @larsvegas1505
      @larsvegas1505 7 років тому +1

      DjDolHaus86 I'd say its not down to manufacturing costs its about engineering abilities and about demand. U can get a rear drag spinning reel for about 20 euro's here.. and even if it would cost more they would just ask more dont u think? If only the demand was there, witch it isn't. Also when do u really have to take of a spool at the water side?.. been fishing for 20 years maybe done it 1 time..

    • @DjDolHaus86
      @DjDolHaus86 7 років тому

      It is sort of down to demand, they don't change anything unless their customers demand it because thats the most cost effective way to go about business. The 20E reel is built to a price, no seals, sintered metal parts and basic bearings that'll shatter as soon as you load them up, it features the cheapest materials and manufacturing processes because they are designed to be disposable units that sell in high volumes. They could of course make it better but then they would have to increase the price and that wouldn't appeal to the same mass market so sales would suffer and a different strategy would have to be employed. Your 20E reel and a top end shimano or diawa contain the same basic bits but the manufacturing quality is the difference. I've also been angling for 20+ years and had plenty of first hand experience with manufacturers through sponsorship deals and suchlike, at the end of the day its a business and while they want to give their customers the best they can build they also need to make money and all decisions are made with this in mind

    • @larsvegas1505
      @larsvegas1505 7 років тому

      DjDolHaus86 Its not like the customer demand anything.. its about opportunities.. if u have a business and a product isn't there and u think u can sell a lot u produce it.. if noone wants the product u dont.. its that simple. Same goes for pricing.. thats why all brands have reels from 20-1000 bucks.. to suit everyones wallet and means. There is just no place for a high end front drag salwater reel there..

    I think quick change spools is crap. Much rather have the big smooth front drag. That's why i also changed my baitrunners for big pit reels. That and the better casting abilities

    • @DbaldetToShuffle
      @DbaldetToShuffle 7 років тому

      PapaBaske well you can get baitrunners with a proper front drag. Shimano has quite some of 'em, some even for a nicely low prize. And stuff like the big baitrunners which are pretty much gigantuam and also damn expensive.....

      @PapaBaske 7 років тому

      I know but the baitrunners with the front drag doesnt have quick change spools either. I'll never buy a reel with rear drag again. And i also think the big baitrunners is fair prized. Actually i think it is the reel where you get most for your money and the best of both worlds. But i have a fetich for quality reels, so i couldn't settle for those 😂

      I throw weights up to 7 ounces on a 12 foot rod with it. Just a standard Beach reel used by many UK anglers. We would rarely use it for spinning(lures),its just too big. Although it must seem strange as in the UK we call it either a fixed spool reel,or a spinning reel.

    bad advice on the shock leader, esecially for beginners.You should be using 10lb shick for every oz casting. So if casting 5oz you need 50lb shock leader.
    Also tapered shock leaders are not always that strong unless if you are tieing very good knots.
    I use 20lb braid with a 60lb braid shock leader and dont have any problems with a leader knot. Or i use 60lb braid straight through.
    Never under estimate using a shock leader unless if you are only casting short distances without any power.

    "suggestion is 26lb braid straight through" lol wat, i use stronger braid on my lure gear for pollock....... for the kind of fishing these reels are made for you need a leader 65-100lb depending on the leads and ground you are fishing unless you go heavy straight through like 60lb+ in which a leader isn't needed unless you want one for abrasion.
