Danny Gatton and Funhouse at Gallagher's 2.19.88 - Washington, DC

- K. Nelson shot this original video of Danny Gatton and The Funhouse. It features Danny Gatton on guitar, Barry Hart on Drums, John Previti on Bass and Chris Battistone on trumpet. The song is "Oleo". This group is often referred to as Funhouse I. This excerpt features a great solo by Danny Gatton. There is a funny moment when Danny's cigarette finishes burning just as the solo is done.
The team behind "The Humbler - Danny Gatton" is thrilled that K. Nelson has donated the use of this original material to our feature documentary!!

Like Charlie Parker - some musicians are hard to explain, they can't be brought down to earth with analysis, and you just shake your head in amazement. They're just in their own league.
I've been playing guitar for nearly 40 years. I'm just 4 years younger now than when Danny left us. I don't think I could ever come close to having the kind of skill Danny had. There never was a guitarist like Danny before or since. I just marvel at his playing. Wish I could've seen him live.
Danny's improvising could get damn surreal at times. Love it.
An absolute beast. A jack of all trades and master of all.
I don't think anyone can out do Danny G......Amazing...!
What a guitar extraordinaire.........!!!!
The name of the tune is "Well You Needn't" and was written by Thelonious Monk.
Holy damn!! Definitely one of the best examples of his prowess.
Beyond Human Reasoning! Word can’t even begin to describe how Amazing Danny Gatton is !
Was, unfortunately.
I am humbled by the Humbler. I keep getting better and learning more on the guitar, but I'll never climb this mountain. God bless Danny!
My favorite player...
Danny was amazing I don’t think anyone had his versatility on the guitar
Holy smoke, cowabunga, hay chi mama, and jumpin' gee-monetti that man is GOOD!
He was a monster ! 😮😮😮
Wow jaw dropping!!!!!!
Whenever the subject of the best guitarists ever comes up, it's always the same ol' 50 "Popular" guitarists. Don't get me wrong, Dimes, Hendrix and Ingva were some of the best of the best. But I always love the opportunity to submit to the argument, Danny Gatton. To which people are ALWAYS like, "Danny WHO?" I then point them to this video. I first saw Danny on Austin City Limits when it first aired. I was in shock. I've never forgotten that moment. But this video is so good in showing just how good he was in dancing around 5 or more disciplines within a single measure. From jazz through to rockabilly seamlessly. It's like Les Paul said, "I don't care who you bring, Danny could do it better, faster and more accurate." He Humbled the best of the best over and over. I would have loved to have seen Danny take on Jack Butler in "Crossroads." They'd of all been heading for the exits crying for their mommies!
yngwie?
Amen !!!!!!
Danny truly the best that ever lived!!
Danny had no equals simply stunning guitar prowess some other guys close were Scotty Anderson Roy Buchanan Rory Gallagher Gary Moore Wes Montgomery junior brown Alvin lee Bill frissell Lenny breau joe pass frank marino tommy Emanuel Roy Clark Jeff beck joe bonamassa among others of top calbre
@@claytongillaspy8847 That's a pretty good list. I guess you'd have to put James Burton in that mix. And then Danny would have smoked them all...
I'm glad I watched it to the end when the ashes finally fell off his cigarette.
His proficiency is staggering!🤘
You’ve all listened to the rest. Ladies and gents and now for the best!
This is fantastic !!! Danny is one of the greatest guitar players !!!
Probably the greatest.
Danny was put on the earth to play the guitar. I’m glad he found his true calling in life, not many people do.
He’s so locked into the drummer. A real tour de force
good point. I have always admired Gatton but this sounded like a just a collection of licks and tricks until you pointed out his connection with the drummer. Then it made so much more sense.
@@boblafond4482well it was also lifted out of the middle of the song so maybe a bit of context missing…but he’s playing Monk here…he also played rockabilly, country, rock, blues and jazz…so much music at such a high level coming from one person..
Absolutely fantastic! Thanks!
Just phenomenal, jaw dropping as ever
Musically, the man had it ALL; he could pull any tone out of a Tele, from pinch harmonics, to a jazzbox-style roundness to the notes with his thumb. He could play any style and make it sound like he studied it exclusively, I don't think there was an inversion on a fretboard he didn't know, he could play with straight tuning or altered. You could stick him on a stage with an Ibanez Jem and he could outshred Guthrie Govan and play it like he'd been raised on Metallica. Hand him a jazzbox and he could straight up convince Pat Metheny or Bireli Lagrene to re-rack their guitar and take a seat.
He was one of those players that every single player in the known world wants to be, but only maybe 10 in the world truly are; he could say on a guitar what his brain had conjured up a millisecond before, without relying on well-trodden riffs, and play it so fluid and articulate you'd think he'd been practising that routine every night. The other video from this performance, his solo over What'd I Say should be subtitled "Separating the wheat from the chaff", because he plays a six minute solo incorporating a multitude of different styles, and I don't think he repeats even a single two note phrase once.
Absolutely incredible. The kind of musician the word "genius" was coined for.
Get off the fence, do you like him?
Everything you say is truth…he and Lenny Breau were friends…there’s a bootleg cd of Buddy Emmons, Lenny Breau and Danny Gatton playing together…that’s quite a gathering of guitar talent…
Many things are true. But in terms of complexity Lenny Breau was lightyears away.
@@stephanvogt8038I’m going to respectfully disagree here…in an interview with Ted Greene, Ted says the greatest guitar player is Danny Gatton, then he says Lenny too…he says those two were the best. Lenny did some things Danny didn’t do and Danny did some things Lenny didn’t do. They were friends and there is a bootleg cd of Buddy Emmons, Lenny and Danny playing together…not even Lenny would solo after Danny…Danny took the last solos. And Buddy who played with both Lenny and Danny said that Danny was the only guitar player that ever blew him off the stage and there was nothing he could do about it. I believe the two of them should be on the guitarist Mount Everest together…and I don’t think either cared who was better. As a matter of fact Danny told me that Lenny was his hero. I don’t think you can be wrong if you pick either and say he was the best. It’s those two for me. Cheers 🙏
Can I get some Roy Buchanan love please????
The Boss !
Ladies and gentlemen, there is no such thing as the greatest guitarist of all time - but if there was?
Who’s it be if there was one tho?
@@lopezpresentsthestories8624 I’ll tell you who it is - Danny “The Humbler” Gatton ! Equal considerations goes to Chet Atkins !
Ted Green said the best guitar player was Danny. And Lenny. Those two.
hell of a solo with strange modulations - outstanding
Danny is, was and always will be the best.
I can only stand in awe.
I was just thinking the same thing! The music world is nuts!! What a master he is, it almost seems like guitar playing is too easy for him
Danny was the best 🎼🙏
Simply amazing
Amazing
Wow!!! He's still my favorite!
It doesn't get any better on guitar than Danny Gatton. Otherworldly and in a league of his own.
I suppose someone, somewhere below has made this correction, but the tune is not "Oleo". They are obviously playing the chord changes to "Well You Needn't" by Thelonius Monk.
Incredible, I have the full 3 hour video. There's stacks more unbelievable guitar work on it.
John Berry full three hour video???? Please share, PLEASE.
@@joncorbin888 I got it from a guy in the States who calls himself Dannygattonmaster on UA-cam. See if you can find him. He put it on a DVD for me and he said this is just for you.
I do to John I have a bunch of bootleg Danny gatton videos he’s my favorite guitarist bar none this Gallagher’s performance is incredible but then everything Danny did was incredible jaw dropping playing gatton was the man there will never be another guitarist of this caliber again simply awesone player
So do I John this video and many others from this master guitarist my favorite for a long time now
C'mon man, you gotta share that with the world. Please.
There is no best guitarist .. there are just great guitarists and of course this guy is there
What a legend!!!
He couldn't make mistakes because he knew a dozen ways to get out of any note. Intuitively. He'd be like, "OK, lets do this then."
Right. Years ago I remember my uncle saying Danny couldn't play badly even if he tried. It was true.
That's what I was just thinking! He'd never 'freeze' cause he had a way out no matter where he was on the neck! Rip Danny Gatton🙏
“Songs over was over ‘cause ash fell, what next?” My guess to what mr. Gatton said! Love it!
This was the best, Danny at the center of the music.
That this man was playing like that in front of a dartboard tells us something about the way the world is
Amen
Man, is that the truth or what?
Any more videos from this "session" I have only seen one other and would love more.
He preferred dart boards to people
How? What does it say?
Holy moly! What a solo!
this is just beautiful!
God I miss him… ❤️
No one else like Danny.
Incredible.
This is mind blowing!
One of the most tragic losses in music ever.
1994 was the year music died. again.
Danny Hatton was the best player of all.
Spell check Danny Gatton.
I have never heard anything like this......
You've got to be kidding...Some guitarists who have hovered near this know whats taking place musically and physically ...This is what 30,000 hrs of practice would bring you pretty close to this if you learned Travis picking at 12 to 13 yrs old and flat picking. Thru the teenage yrs on a good guitar that didnt hinder the process but helped ...But one would still be in awe of the dedication dues paying that Danny achieved...Danny had exactly all the components to achieve virtuosity and he did...I wish he'd stuck around longer...or I wonder if they got to him like they get to all people of renown who dont play their satanic evil games...?RIP DG.
Funny that Danny spent more time restoring old cars than playing guitar!! Some people are send by God with unbelievable talent.Danny could listen to ANYONE then play what they played but play it better!!! That's magic to have an ear like that
I remember chatting with Danny, I asked him how he can play sets and never repeat a lick. He told me that when he stepped on stage it was like flipping a switch. If he had 7 sets of hands he couldn’t get out the ideas that were running through him.
That was ridiculous!
Utter shame this man and Roy Buchanan are snubbed from greatest of all time lists. Those two are easily top 5 to ever pick up an instrument
They used to play together in the same band! I can only imagine how phenomenal those shows must have been!
Genius!!
Yeah... I'm humbled.
Incredible technical playing he was a genius.
Sensacional.
Wow😳

With wide spatula, turn; cook 2 minutes more or until golden. Transfer to platter or keep warm on a cookie sheet in 225°F oven.
Repeat with remaining batter, brushing griddle with more oil if necessary.
Lol!
Peak perfection
Lucky it wasn't darts night
rightshag i bet he would've won
He would have caught the dart in midflight, used it as a guitar pick then trow it over his shoulder and scored a perfect shot all without missing a beat...
I like this comment so much I've just started saying it randomly and no one knows what I'm talking about.
@@2skyland lmao we gotta make this a saying
Where are those licks and runs coming from. I've never heard anyone as gifted
If you hadn't seen or heard Danny before this video, you would initially think, "pretty hip jazz guitarist", then "great blues player", then, "great country-rockabilly". By the end of it you're, oh that's why he's the humbler.
Lol I’m gonna go play jesses girl and make more money doing it than this guy ever made…and that’s a sad fact. What a legend this dude was….
sick
He should have been on the big stages not in front of dart boards. He was destined to be a huge star. Tragically his life ended before that happened.
Amazing artist and lucky to have lived there and then. He had no business playing someplace with a dartboard by his head.
He didn’t know theory, and he didn’t practice much, but Danny Gatton was pure, unadulterated genius, mind connected to fingers, picking and fretting fingers perfectly synched, could hear something, and then reproduce it, with embellishment, on guitar.
and in the key of F...
1988 was the first time seeing him play U.S. BLUES on Bond st in lower Manhattan went home told my brother who turn me on to STEVIE RAY VAUGHAN when he was playing clubs so had to turn him on to one of the GREAT ONE'S.
The best stuff that Danny did was always what he did live. He had to tone everything down in the studio to try to get along with the record companies. Used to watch him down in Annapolis at Charlie's West Side back in the 1970's. I wish I could have got some lessons from him back in the day. Some of his licks are quite playable for most intermediate guitarists. His other licks either take a lot of work or are just impossible for most of us. Most of us can be really good players, but we are either unable or unwilling to put in the time. Danny put in a lot of time as evidenced by the wear on his Tele. Learn his easier licks and move on from there. There is a lot more in the musical universe than pentatonics...
I agree. His on stage prowess bowed to NO ONE!
Well said
I watched so many documentaries and read so much on him and he always said he was too shy to play big shows and didn't like playing shows at all
Steve, Danny's genius was born within that fear. That's where he became a MONSTER. Just look up what Les Paul said about Danny. "I don't care who you bring or how good they are, Danny could do ANYTHING they could do Better, Faster and more Precise. Danny will eat um' for lunch" Les Paul would know. He seen and played live with Danny many times. And Danny did all of this instantly, improvisational and with superior confidence.
@@BooBooJonez amazing man
Mother of God!
@ 1:12 WOW! Unreal...
Why do I even try....
You try because you are unique.
Danny was an absolute guitar monster there is nobody today or then that could touch him a guitar genius some close to him would be Roy Buchanan Rory Gallagher tommy Emanuel Gary Moore Scotty Anderson Alvin lee frank Marino Johnny Hiland junior brown Wes Montgomery Chet Atkins mark knopfler Jeff beck lee ritenour Larry Carlton pat metheney just a few guys who are awesome guitarists!
Is it really "Oleo"? It sounded to me like he was playing over the changes to "Well You Needn't" , which he and Joey DeFrancesco did on a Jazz album.
Is he playing 'well you needn't'
by Thelonius Monk?
I think that's what it is..
Well he needn't, but I'm rather glad he did
I believe it was Danny's bass player who said that he heard God coming out of Danny's amplifiers....🎸🎸🎸
😨 Dam . I dont know that song 😂 he's the man.
Thelonious Monk's 'Well You Needn't'
eee gads danny was good. lord.
Think of the ungodly amount of practice it takes to be able to play like that.
@beepbopboh it’s funny you say that…there’s truth in it. Nashville Cats according to John Sebastian was written after he saw a young Danny Gatton playing in a Holiday Inn and wondered why he got to play the big rooms while a player as talented as Danny Gatton was relegated to a lounge in Holiday Inn.
Even at 70 years old I keep trying but there is no way... 😂🎸
Is Just warmig up..
Anybody got the tab for this? 😂😂
Danny at Gallagher’s playing on the fly improv Danny could do it all I wish someone would upload the rest of this event another hour of jaw dropping virtuosity in action! The best that ever was! Nobody could outplay this guy nobody then or today
he died too soon,by his own hand. play free, Danny!
Is there a full version of this concert? That video from this show where he jams on the blues for 7 minutes is the shit (in a good way.).
I believe so, if not there are many clips from it.
Looking for Clayton Gillaspy anybody ?
Ken Wheeler at GuitarPlayer magazin did say: who can outplay him.......
My attention wanders to this music after awhile...I can appreciate jazz but have a hard time following it. I need a structured melody to make my fur rise. Danny on guitar seems to be equivalent to many of the great jazz players, who drew a large audience, but many could not grasp what was going on musically.
That's how you play a guitar people

Another one who made a deal with the devil long ago to become a supernatural instrumentalist and ultimately father death came a knockin'.
Is this not a Monk tune?
Yeah, I think it's "Well You Needn't..."
Agree, this is "Well You Needn't", not "Oleo".
All other players sit with mouths open....How does he DO that?
Holy shit! the holy grail. wha? what just happend to me?????????????????/????.>L
