I saw Gatton and SRV live a bunch of times. By 1990 so many new blues guitarist sounded like SRV, but nobody could copy Gatton. His harmonic knowledge, unpredictability and chops were from another planet.

To paraphrase Archilochus, Danny Gatton knew many things, but Stevie Ray Vaughan knew one big thing. In this case, as I've gotten older, I like the fox more than the hedgehog, though I appreciate both.

I've watched this so many times. This guy was beyond belief imaginative and consistently creative. One thing I have to say is, the drummer has amazing perception to what's happening. Listen to how many times the feel changes based on what style Gatton decides to morph into. That's an A class drummer in my opinion.

Dan was known to start when he was ready. His band mates were amazing in that when they were caught off guard when he started, could assimilate in an an instant. Not sure who the drummer was her but it may have been Dave Elliott, consummate professional.

I've had this clip for years, watched it 100's of times--it still amazes and inpires. I hear a LOT of Buddy Emmons steel guitar influences in there. As well as rockabilly, chicken-pickin', western swing, jazz chord substitution, etc. All seamlessly put together and swinging heavy. He had IT.

You can compare Danny Gatton for example to Birelli Lagrene the same way you can compare an apple to a pear. They are fruits(guitar player) and taste sweet(many-faceted) but you cannot tell which one of them is better in a holistic way. Finally its a matter of taste. They are both masters in their own way. By the way danny gatton is one of the few guitarist that drop my shoes off.

Danny Gatton discovered the remarkable fact that the guitar was designed for the hand... four frets and four fingers with an opposable thumb for leverage/pressure... this is why he was able to reach so many notes so quickly... He discovered the secret of hand posture very early in his career... still, he was a melodic genius.

Danny never compromised his style, never played anything that went against his... grain. His sound and style, so very unique and so "Danny". I saw Danny play many times in my youth, every time, without fail, I left with the feeling that greatness had just been made visible. Though I think I know the answer... I always left wondering who was Danny playing for?

Mark8395217 it maybe for all guitardom .
being as no one outside of musicians, care about technique , i think Danny knew. how to use a lit of technique and always sound cool .
he sounded cool to non guitarists , and non musicians.
i remember a metal guitar player saying to me (the engineer) ," i will play my solo as many times as i want , till i am satisfied with it"
this guy would fight till death to get it down .i was blown away by how important it was to him
that is the music community we deal with . we find importance in something no one else cares about to this extent
Danny had both things , the ability to do all the technique
and the ability to just sound musical and cool .
It maybe the benevolence of a guitar hero is 5% for other technique freaks , but the other 95% is for the joy of rhythm, and way cool rockin little melodic songs

Jimi Hendrix was the most innovative and exciting electric guitarist ever. Jimi isn't the greateat ever because he didn't know what an Eflat diminished 13th scale was or because he didn't shred up and down the neck playing 50 notes a second, but because he wrote incredible songs and came out with a new music (based in the blues) and invented a totally new guitar canon. His affect is still being realised today. He encompassed so many styles and he did it all naturally.

His brain is different than ours, probably so is his nervous system. I don't mean mechanically different, but just better at this stuff than we are. In terms of things that everyone does consciously thinking in music and what folks do reflexively, things we'd have to think about, his brain takes care of. Or maybe he thinks that fast. I played guitar for 15 years as a kid to young adulthood, and never got that good at it - my brain and sense (and every single other thing that goes into music) just aren't as good as his. I can live with that!
Shawn lane said the same thing about his speed, that his nervous system works faster than the average person's.

Fabulous technique and a delicious sounding Tele. Danny deserved to be more famous but his style didn't really fit into any of the standard categories.

As Les Paul said: Danny Gatton plays all american guitar history in one tune. He was a very creative guitar player like Lenny Breau was!

This is some of the hottest playing you'll hear anywhere. When I lived in Cincinnati there was a guy named Junior Spivey who reminded me a lot of this. He had this same kind of off-the-wall approach where you never knew what was coming. And Scotty Anderson was from around that area as well. He's a monster.

This is about the best electric guitar playing I've ever heard. It's simply mind-boggling the different styles and techniques he includes in one song. He was simply from a different planet.

Every time I take a spin around UA-cam and light on a number of great guitar videos that floor me, I keep coming back here for a reality check thinking "Hang on -could Danny really have been that good????"
And every time the same answer gets forcibly knocked into my head once more: "Don't be stupid - here is clear evidence that Danny was/is light years ahead of the game"

This is fnk ing crazy!! I love Danny! I’ve been playing 30yrs and am fairly accomplished. I can watch most players and at least have a basic understanding of what they are doing. But with Danny it’s like he is so far ahead of what the normal brain can keep up with!!! He is unreal!!! Not of this solar system!!!!
