    I made your hair cream and my hair loves it. I changed the formula a bit by adding mango butter and shea butter. Also, I removed the aloe vera . after doing research, i found out that btms 50 does not go well with aloe vera. No flakes and easily melts in my hair. Thank you for sharing.

    Great video! Just a little feedback, you honestly don’t need to boil flaxseeds long to get a really good thick gel. You only need about 8-10 minutes and it turns out nice and thick when it cools. I like mines thick too. Also strain immediately through a strainer while hot that way you don’t have to use your hands unless you really want some extra.

    So I used your measurements to make my own curling cream and I just want to say you made life easier for me. Before I would boil fenugreek seeds, sea moss, flaxseeds, hisbiscus flower (for the color), roses and chia seeds. strain everything use my emersion blender to merge everything together with some xanthan gum and my oils. with a preservative, it would like for 2.5 months but i cant wait to see how long this emulsion last.

    I do prefer the cream method bc I personally cannot deal with the plain flaxseed after the boil, it reminds me too much of snot. Thanx for showing us there are different ways to actually use flaxseed gel. I had mine sitting in the cabinet bc I just can’t put my hands in it after it boils like that. And I can handle a lot of things but plain flaxseed isn’t one of them. Thx again and very much appreciated ❤

    This is a fun product idea- I might try something similar in a few weeks when I take down my crochet braids.
    For your problems with the final product, I have a few suggestions based on my own experimenting with homemade products:
    1. Reducing the amount of flaxseed gel. I think it’s fine to do 1/2 plain water 1/2 flax gel in your water phase, as the mucilage in the gel adheres strongly to hair. Fine when it’s crystal clear but not great when it’s in a very obvious white product. Flax seed extract is one possibility, but seems a bit pricey. A cheaper alternative is to simply soak the seeds in boiling hot water until the water cools, then blend and lightly strain the mixture. Still extracting most of the lovely benefits, but you’ll miss the worst of the film forming.
    2. Changing the emulsifier. We all love BTMS for it’s cationic conditioning properties, but its applications are much more limited than the DIY community will originally lead us to believe. I don’t want to get too much into the science of it, but plant mucilage can have a wide range of pH’s though the ones lauded in the natural hair community tend to be alkaline and full of lovely electrolytes like Ca, Mg, K, etc., and a bevy of negative ions to bind these lovely electrolytes. These, when mixed with cationic BTMS, is every high school chemistry teacher’s wet dream and hairstylist’s worst nightmare: precipitating salt. So you can avoid the worst of this by switching to a non ionic emulsifier like Montanov 68 or a Polysorbate, blending like hell, and then testing pH adjusting bit by bit to find the best point when you can maximize preservative efficiency while minimizing flake. It’s also worth looking into getting a preservative with good operating at less acidic/neutral conditions.
    3. Like you mentioned, certain co-emulsifiers might work to increase spreadability. Cetyl alcohol is very good, but I find stearyl alcohol works even better to decrease drag. I think it’s also worth looking into changing your main oil to something oilier- an olive or avocado oil or even Shea butter might be a good choice.
    However, I don’t think your stability is going to be an issue at all with this product as mucilage has some emulsifying properties so it’s essentially acting as its own co-emulsifier.
    Those are the main useful suggestions that ran through my mind as I watched this video.
    I’m excited to see where your reformulating takes you!

    The flaking of this is not a drill. The only way I could somewhat compensate was by increasing water fraction and switching to a different emulsifier. Turns out, btms 25 and btms 50 don't do so well with electrolyte rich solutions...

    • @samanthaknapo
      @samanthaknapo 2 роки тому

      Hi @KRenee what emulsifier do you use now?

    • @trianna2008
      @trianna2008 2 роки тому +8

      @@samanthaknapo I’m not the OP but flaking in a hair product is usually caused by compounds inside reacting. When dealing with solutions like these with a high amount of electrolytes (or similar alkaline solutions), a cationic emulsifier like BTMS can react with it and form a solid salt, which will mix with the other ingredients in the cream and result in unsightly flakes.
      The best way to avoid this would be to either use an emulsifier at a similar pH to your other ingredients (basic emulsifiers include glyceryl stearate and your surfactants/soaps. Alternatively, you can use a non-ionic emulsifier like Montanov 68 (my go to emulsifier for any facial products), or the Polysorbates. I’m sure Montanov 68 or Polysorbate 80 would make a fantastic choice for this formula.

    Hello, thank you for the recipe. If I just want to make flax seed gel but add oil and honey how much should I use?

    • @krenee984
      @krenee984 2 роки тому +2

      Use a soap calculator or an excel spreadsheet to figure out the percentages of each ingredient and you will understand the basic formula and can we experiment from there. Scale the recipe down to a 100g project size so you have less waste. Honey goes in the water phase. Honey goes in the water phase.

    Thank you for sharing your recipe! Im thinking of starting to create a leave in conditioner for my hair. I was wondering would it be possible to not add the flaxseed gell in the water phase. Instead of incorporating the gell & glycerine into the oil, can i just add glycerine only?
