Would you recommend getting medium size grow bags in a pack and then a few larger bags when it’s time to plant those? Or just get all large bags and under fill when you don’t need as much?
I'd suggest to have few bags of different sizes. It will be easier to fill and move them, and some plants do better in a smaller bags. I mostly use 3,5 gallons for herbs and peppers, and 7,10 for plants with big roots like tomato, melons,... hope this helps and thank you for visiting.
Am growing my watermelons in containers, but I am using Clothing Bins, so any way, I used soil mix, sand, perlite & all purpose fertilizer, mix it all up and wholla the plants are growing up a steel mesh trellis, and I got about 10 watermelons in different stages of growth. I planted the Black Diamonds, and also Catalops. Watermelons are costing close to $10 each, and the cantaloupes are all most $5.00 each. So w/these 2 plants growing really well, I got like about $200 in Watermelons & Cantaloupes alone. Watering them, well I had a gallon jug, so what I did, I cut off the top, and I got my sprayer w/fertilizer and aimed it into the gallon jug, and counted 15 seconds, then I poured the water from the gallon jug into a measuring cup. The total of amount of water was 1 3/4 Cups . So for each plant I put the sprayer to the base of the plant, and count to 15. This method saves me a lot of water, before I was using the gallon container until I got the Whopping Water Bill. Now I only use about 2.5 Gallons of water at the 15 second rate, for 30 different plants. W/the grass that I cut each week, I use that as mulch and I mean thick mulch, but I make a "cup" around the base of the plants to put water in, each time I water I make sure my sprayer has water soluble fertilizer of 20-20-20. So far so good. I am very please w/the garden growing, this is my 2nd year, I kept a log as to what I did each year. Please note that on Watermelons and Cantaloupes, the fruit does not grow near the stem of the plants, the vines have to grow I would say about 5 feet for water melons and about 6-7 feet for Cantaloupes, that is what has happen to my plants. Each Watermelon & Cantaloupe has a nylon mesh tied on each side, one side higher than the other, to hold up the weight of the fruit, I don't want the stem going into the fruit to have to put any stress by the weight of it. Lastly, because my back yard is so small, I had to go "UP" w/my plants, and I did not want to dig up what yard I have so I think that for me, Watermelons & Cantaloupes grow better on a Steel Mesh trellis growing upwards not only because of the weight but be cause the bees do not have to fly so low to the ground to pollinated them. Could be that is why I got so many watermelons growing on the steel mesh trellis because of the bees flying high. I hope this post helps someone to at least have an idea as to how to grow these fruits and save money. Thank You.

I watched some your video, from bell pepper and decorative pepper? from seedling until replant to pot did you give your plant fertilizer? Because you just seedling from coco coir and perlite is that enough to provide the plant nutrition?
The mix I use for pricking out seedlings has compost and feeds the seedlings. If I grow seedlings directly in coir and perlite until transplanting, I will feed them with diluted fish fertilizers. You can check my video on here for more details on how I water and fertilize my seedlings: ua-cam.com/video/AIeiB31yEJw/v-deo.htmlsi=gPTBcSwUoSFB7cWP . Hope this helps and thank you for visiting.
Glad you like it. It is best to grow watermelons when spring weather is warmed and night temperatures are consistently above 55°F (13°C). In mild winters Apr-Jun, and cold winters May-Jun. Thank you very much for your comment!
Yes, I did (check video @3:32). You should keep only one seedling per pot. Watermelons are very root sensitive and if you try to remove the extra seedling , probably it won't thrive. Also you risk damaging the other seedling in the pot too. If you need to have more seedlings or don't want to waste any, sow one seed per pot and keep any that germinates successfully. Hope this helps and thank you for getting in touch!
Hi… Love all your videos.. It’s great to see so many people subscribing to your channel. Love that for you. Just had one question, did you make any changes in the frequency of watering when the fruits started to mature? I have read that less watering makes the watermelon taste more sweeter. Have you made any changes in your watering? If not, did you find any difference in the taste of the fruit? Please do let me know. TIA!
Hi. Glad you love the videos. I usually keep watermelons well-watered and don't change the watering schedule. I do that for the melons but haven't tried it on watermelons. The all taste great at the end. Thank you very much for your comment!
Hey! I am looking to start growing my own watermelon (sugar babies) due to having a smaller growing space. When you say “Seed starting mix” do you mean use a seed starting mix on top of the coir+perlite or would I be using the coir+perlite as the seed starting mix?
My seed mix is coir+perlite. But any seed mix available works too. Check this video ua-cam.com/video/cJZcGDAro6w/v-deo.htmlsi=bRfyVPAmbWtplkz5 for the my seed starting recipe. Happy growing and thank you for visitung.
I think you will need to add some sort of aeration, such as perlite or vermiculite to the mix. If you mean bagged potting soil,, then that is fine, but garden soils don't have any of that. I think you will need to add plenty of holes on the side of the bag too. Happy growing and thanks.
@@TowardGarden Thanks. New gardener here. I bought nine 1 cu ft bags of garden soil for tub container gardening. Oops. Watch more voids & I should have used "potting soil. I did add twigs & compost to bottom before I added the garden soil. I returned 3 unopened bags & got two 2 cu ft bags of "potting soil" for the cantaloupe plants.
I'm glad I found this video because I need good instructions on how to grow watermelons in containers. I looked up "chicken wire," and the search term did not pull up anything that looks like the fencing in the video. Could you please tell me what is the gauge of the fencing and what is the diameter of the sticks in the trellis? I may have to improvise, but the trellis looks sturdy and easy enough for a beginner to make. Thank you.
The wire mesh is sold as tomato wire but you may not be able to find the exact item online. I have listed similar wire mesh on my amazon page if interested: amzn.to/3VaYoXf or amzn.to/4by1xGl . You may also use regular welded wire fence 16 Gauge 2"x4" or 2x3" mesh available in major retailers like Home depot or Lowes with the same function and no major effect on growing. The bamboo sticks are 6ft. Here is a link for the sticks amzn.to/4a0WNYR . Hope this helps and thank you so much for your comment!
@@TowardGarden Do you think using a thicker gauge like 14 or 12.5 gauge would be too hard to work with in this simple project? I haven't had any experience with metal fencing.
@metalrabbit09 yes, you can use those too. The lower number of gauge means the wires are thicker, so more heavy duty, but also more resistant to bending. For an easier application in trellis making, I wouldn't go below 14ga. Happy gardening.
@@TowardGarden Thank you. Just about all the videos that discuss using metal wire for trellises don't cover basic information like gauge or the correct tools to cut different gauges.
I had a question to keep crops warm during the frost season would you recommend something like a plastic cover or even tarp I know you can get a greenhouse but the other ways could work right or any recommendations?
Thank you for your videos. If I could ask a question what week did you start fertilizing was that at the 10 week mark or was that when you first planted your seedlings?
Does watermelon grow slower in winter? Is this best to grow beginning of summer? I've started the very last week of summer here in New Zealand. It's been about 12 wks now. Still very small.
Almost all vegetables grow slower in cold weather. Once it gets warmer it will start to grow faster and catch up with the season. Wishing you a great harvest and thank you for visiting!

Great video, thanks for sharing! By any chance do you do videos with only the sound of the work your doing? No background music, hearing the containers and tools tap and what not was sort of my favorite part of it all😂 Anyways, again, Thankyou for sharing this video with us.
It is always better to check the pH level of the soil before adding the garden lime. If your fertilizer contains calcium, then adding garden lime is not needed and is optional. If needed, follow the instruction on the bag, or 2 Tbsp per pot should be sufficient. Thank you so much for your comment!
Thank you for the video, I have a question about starting inside. I have some seeds do I need to put them under a grow light on top of a grow mat? Or under a dome under a grow light and keep them moist? I’m in zone 6b Michigan if that helps.
If you are keeping the seed pots inside, the the room temperature should be enough for germination. Heat mat is only required if the temperature is below 70F. For the light, yes you definitely need a source of light. A sunny window sill is much better than grow lights. If you want to use grow light make sure they are high power/output ones (200 Watt equivalent or higher amzn.to/3VpwW8y ). My choice would be to expose them to 4-6 hours of morning sunlight in a clear tote or a cold frame. You can bring them inside in cold nights. Hope this helps and thank you so much for your comment!

Thank You.
Sounds good. Thanks for sharing.
This was so helpful! thank you!

10 gallons? Is that about a 40cm pot?

Growing watermelon in containers is a rewarding experience, yielding delicious fruit even in small spaces. 🍉
Yes indeed! Thank you so much for your comment! 😊
I've got fox farm soil which is super rich. I am thinking I don't need compost. I'm also using fox farm fertilizer
super rich and super expensive too. Glad you found something that works for you and thanks for visiting!
@@TowardGarden not sure if it’s working, the plant is kinda yellow and dry and only about 2 inches high. Hoping it continues to grow in my huge pot
Awesome 👍😎.
Thank you so much!😊
Wooooow that was effin awesome 👌

Thank you! Gracias!!
@@TowardGarden aaaa thank you 💐
Thank you for sharing your information which season is good for planting watermelon
Glad you like it. It is best to grow watermelons when spring weather is warmed and night temperatures are consistently above 55°F (13°C). In mild winters Apr-Jun, and cold winters May-Jun. Thank you very much for your comment!
The music is ao soothing

Once you’ve planted two seeds per container for germination do you have to pluck one out? Can I transfer one seed sprout into a container?
Yes, I did (check video @3:32). You should keep only one seedling per pot. Watermelons are very root sensitive and if you try to remove the extra seedling , probably it won't thrive. Also you risk damaging the other seedling in the pot too. If you need to have more seedlings or don't want to waste any, sow one seed per pot and keep any that germinates successfully. Hope this helps and thank you for getting in touch!
@@TowardGarden thank you this helped. 🙏

Hi im just new subscriber I love watching your water melon my fav fruits
Hi 👋 so glad to have you with us. Welcome and thank you very much for your comment!😊
nice idea dude! i try it !!!
Have fun. Thank you so much for your comment!
Happy growing and
thank you for visitung.
Can I plant watermelon plant directly in the upright bag the garden soil comes in? Holes punched in bottom for drainage of course.
@tayfan2 I think you are on the right track. Wishing you a great harvest.
Hi did you pinch the main prunes?
Hi, I usually don't. But if you see stems grow too leggy and fruits are maturing, you can pinch them. Thank you for visiting!
Love this video, after you cut the watermelons will the plant keep producing? I will definitely try this 🙏🏻🍉
So glad you love the video. Watermelons are annual and won't produce after harvest. Happy growing and thank you so much for your comment!
I had a question to keep crops warm during the frost season would you recommend something like a plastic cover or even tarp I know you can get a greenhouse but the other ways could work right or any recommendations?
Watermelons usually are not frost hardy, so I think the only way would be if you have a warm green house. Good luck!
Thank you for your videos. If I could ask a question what week did you start fertilizing was that at the 10 week mark or was that when you first planted your seedlings?
I usually start fertilizing couple of weeks after planting in pots. Hope this helps and thank you very much for your comment!

do you prune the watermelon after getting 1-2 fruits to keep the plant focused on the fruit?
The vine can handle 3-4 fruits, but yes, it is better to limit it to 2 fruits. thanks for visiting!
Hi, how do you estimate the ratio when preparing the soil to maintain the required pH? Thanks for great inspiration.
Hi, the best way to check the pH is to use one of those soil pH meters you can find online for about $10. It is great investment for your garden and I use it quite often. Thank you very much for your comment!

Where do you get your plant clips? Also do you use grow lights for your seedlings?
You can get the clips from amazon. I have a link in my amazon store page here www.amazon.com/shop/influencer-3dd9a3b6/list/1DV0D2DY178MS?ref_=aip_sf_list_spv_ofs_mixed_d . And I generally do not use grow lights. I keep my seed trays in a shed like room in my backyard until the seedlings sprout. As soon as they pop out, I move them outside in indirect sunlight (under a patio umbrella), or 3-4 hours of direct early morning sunlight. But you sure can you grow light if needed. Hope this helps and thank you for visiting!

I love watching your videos why did you harvest watermelon unripely
That is as ripe as it gets. Not sure how you see that unripen?? Thanks for watching.
Oh sorry i lied its ripe
How tall do they get when you grow them vertically like this?
They can grow to 4-6ft (about 1.5-2m) tall. Thank you for getting in touch!
Thank you for the tutorial. How do you differentiate between a male flower from the female flower??
Female or fruit flowers, as the name suggests, have tiny fruits (like a tiny watermelon) attached at the base. But the male flower don't have any fruits attached. It is shown in the video too @4:45 . Hope this helps and Thank you so much for your comment!
Look awesome I hope my plants 🌱 can have fruits 😊

Awesome video! How much garden lime should I add to my 10 gallon grow bag?
It is always better to check the pH level of the soil before adding the garden lime. If your fertilizer contains calcium, then adding garden lime is not needed and is optional. If needed, follow the instruction on the bag, or 2 Tbsp per pot should be sufficient. Thank you so much for your comment!
@@TowardGarden thank you for responding 😃
@tawandawhite6101 glad to be of any help!

Awesome! Do the melons ever get to heavy for the vines?
For this variety that don't get very heavy, the vines can support the melons well. Thank you so much for your comment!
