It's just that when there's so much tech going off (much of which require precise inputs) it becomes harder and harder to maintain good fundamentals. It doesn't necessarily matter if you can pull off a given tech or not when your opponent is just far better at, for example, spacing. Nevertheless it takes an insane amount of fundamental skill to be able to surpass people who're pushing the game to it's absolute technical limits. Borp is a god.
I mean it depends on your level. I think you can be a good player without tech and a lot of people focus on tech over fundamentals and suck mentality but you can never be a top top player without some of that tech

I'm a fairly experienced player who never focused so much on technical and flashy stuff. I rely on fundamentals like shffling, wavedashing etc but I often win over players in my own league who are a lot more technical. They're usually very easy to exploit because they have less "ingame IQ". With that being said, someone who's technical and smart will most likely outplay me every time.
I wasted the first year or so of playing practicing tech skill because I assumed if I could be fast and controlled with my character, I would insta win.
You see it in other games, too. Like Tekken movement. At a certain level in Tekken, there are scrubs that dash in and out crazy fast, but still lose and rage about how you must suck because you didn't even Korean backdash.

So all i could do is watch videos and try to build a gameplan around what pros would do in certain situation. People tend to forget that people with a godlike core are the ones that get dubs. I started playing melee around the time borp was all the talk in the community so while my friends would play someone would yell "BORP HIM" it was then proceeded by slow walking and spot dodgeing.
As a Tekken player, my first reaction is "Well no shit you can get good results without needing advanced movement", but I keep reminding myself that in Melee, you really do need it if your name isn't Peach. This is genuinely sick.

In terms of universal tech, she def has to take advantage of sdi in or out when it comes to fighting fox's correctly or she can die incredibly early to shine upsmash, or sdi falco dair correctly. She has to def take advantage of shield drop aerial for her movement since she's slow af, and her options from ledge are super frame tight due to limited options. She also has the ability to no impact land immediately tech chase on platforms like battlefield. You'll see trif and llod do it. Float cancel does make landing easier but you still have to be good with movement after the float cancel, like jumping immediately and up airing to catch an opponent jumping out of shield or float cancel Nair into dash attack when reading a roll. There's a lot of Peach specific stuff like item tossing turnaround Bair for movement options, instant turnip dropping that you'll see Llod do in-between stocks, or even turnip pull slideoffs which I never see Peach pros use but I suppose it's too difficult for the reward. Another cool think ryobeat will do is double jump cancel backwards fair for movement options...like the fair animation won't even finish but Peach can kinda retreat a bit faster than normal.

The mental game of melee is extremely fascinating to me. In a way, it’s like “camping” but in your face - borp’s is an especially good way to obliterate opponents that are expecting to fight a particular style and cover particular options by doing the “wrong” move, of which there is a much higher chance of happening if the target is known to risk flubbing tech skill. I cannot consistently get into that mindstate, but when I do it feels like I’m able to marry the mental and physical games into one and perform some of my favorite moments

As an old school style of gamer myself, I understand what Borp was trying to prove here. Fundamentals are incredibly important, moreso than any tier list or current meta. I've played many games where people lean so hard into what is 's tier' or 'meta' but seem to be lacking in even the most basic mechanical skill when it comes to the game itself, and they rely entirely on these things to carry them through their games. I saw this a lot in the early years of Overwatch, where people would constantly just use meta picks or swear by ranking systems, but when you actually played them they were incredibly easy to read because they simply copied what they were told without understanding the basics of the game itself. Back when I began playing games, we didn't have leagues, or internet guides, tier lists or tournaments. You picked up a controller, and you learned to play by trial and error, until you figured out what worked best for you. I feel people like Borp understand this, and even if they could play the same way that others do to get an advantage, I can tell he's trying to teach people that what people think is 'meta' is only psychological thing.
Doing this playing as a low tier is basically an insult to other player. I did this with Roy and pichu, I made three players quit after the first stock and made one player say I had a bad connection. It was funny.

Using the mechanics to the fullest in the game is not required per se but knowing that there's someone out there who is doing it good without the crazy tech means they definitely know something is up.

this is a cool concept, from you and from this player. I love love love when players flip the knowledge we think we have on its head. Maybe things aren't as figured out as we tell ourselves... I'm of course not saying faster movement isn't a good thing to use generally, of course. just that thinking outside the box is harder than we think.
the thing about not teching is that you free up a lot of mental and physical energy to focus on straight fundamentals and reading your opponent. I play Melee with minimal tech (I L cancel sometimes) and have been told by many advanced players I could be amazing if I utilized more tech. I simply don’t have it in me to do all of that and am more focused on having fun 😂
Yes that is a fair point. Doing advanced stuff does indeed give your more tools, but if you don't do them, you get to focus more on fundamentals and so on. Same thing can be seen in real life martial arts. Take Taekwondo for example: Some Taekwondo practitioners focus on throwing a lot of complex kicks and doing a lot of moves to trick you. These things do indeed work for their purposes. But thre are Taekwondoins who stick to the basics so they can use their energy to figure you out! So, if you were some kind of machine that can do all of these advanced techniques while also focusing a lot on your opponent and the mental warfare (like many of the top Melee players do), then sure, go for it! But i would recommend everyone else to play like this first

I'm surprised that people saying this because for me, mind game is not just about when there is a binary choice or more, it's about reading EVERYTHING, at long term, you read every fucking step, way of jumping and attacking opponent etc... in fact im not so surprised because a lot of time (90% of time) I can see people literally playing like robot and changing a few things to their gameplay when things are bad, I can see that people hate to read others, but earing "mind games aren't real" is just a proof that some humans want to play a 1v1 game without playing with other people, they just want to learn combo's and tech because they saw this on a video, but it never go that far, for me, people are limiting themselves to a few choices, without thinking that you can literally mind everything
@@trunk2365 Yep. Well said. Tho I don’t think people don’t believe in mind games, they just hate the term. But for some people, like borp, this is a perfect term. And most players pre M2k who were the best were the players with the best mind games. The reason M2k was nicknamed “the robot” was because he played differently from everyone back then- they all were winning by playing the player, while he was winning by covering the most options and punishing harder with each opening. (He still had mind games, they just weren’t why he was winning. He put punished you) Mango was a hybrid. He was insanely technical and could overwhelm you with pressure and force you to act how he wanted you to, and then he would read your option and punish. (He still is doing that to this day.) But because punish game wasn’t as developed, there were less flowcharts and it was less about mixups because there was less pressure, and it was more about baiting and reading. So mind games was the best umbrella term way of saying “they are winning neutral more by being the smarter player”

I played against borp in doubles at a pittsburgh local a couple of weeks ago. I think I got shieldgrabbed at least 10 times in one game. no matter what I did it just felt like I gravitated to the spot in front of his shield every single time. playing against him was so alien to everything else I've ever experienced in the game
Borp is my melee idol. I also play sheik and I also have very little tech skill. Half the time I don't even use the c stick for aerials, mostly due to muscle memory. I just play for fun!
He's amazing, but he's the opposite of fun to me. He's only playing to win, which is fine, but I personally don't consider his gamestyle as fun whatsoever.
Borp is the the avatar for every single person who ever played smash and was the best in their friend group. We are all garbage when it came to tech skill, but our friends got so mad everytime we won anyways

As someone who, due to fucky hand joints, physically can't do many of the techs for comp melee, Borp is a bit of an idol for me.

Using the mechanics to the fullest in the game is not required per se but knowing that there's someone out there who is doing it good without the crazy tech means they definitely know something is up.

I'm of course not saying faster movement isn't a good thing to use generally, of course. just that thinking outside the box is harder than we think.

the thing about not teching is that you free up a lot of mental and physical energy to focus on straight fundamentals and reading your opponent.
I play Melee with minimal tech (I L cancel sometimes) and have been told by many advanced players I could be amazing if I utilized more tech. I simply don’t have it in me to do all of that and am more focused on having fun 😂
Yes that is a fair point.
Doing advanced stuff does indeed give your more tools, but if you don't do them, you get to focus more on fundamentals and so on.
Same thing can be seen in real life martial arts. Take Taekwondo for example:
Some Taekwondo practitioners focus on throwing a lot of complex kicks and doing a lot of moves to trick you. These things do indeed work for their purposes.
But thre are Taekwondoins who stick to the basics so they can use their energy to figure you out!
So, if you were some kind of machine that can do all of these advanced techniques while also focusing a lot on your opponent and the mental warfare (like many of the top Melee players do), then sure, go for it!
But i would recommend everyone else to play like this first
People say that mind games aren’t real, but all we’ve done is split that term into “baits” and “reads”. Simply put, this guy has mind games
wtffff, aren't real ? I'm surprised that people saying this because for me, mind game is not just about when there is a binary choice or more, it's about reading EVERYTHING, at long term, you read every fucking step, way of jumping and attacking opponent etc... in fact im not so surprised because a lot of time (90% of time) I can see people literally playing like robot and changing a few things to their gameplay when things are bad, I can see that people hate to read others, but earing "mind games aren't real" is just a proof that some humans want to play a 1v1 game without playing with other people, they just want to learn combo's and tech because they saw this on a video, but it never go that far, for me, people are limiting themselves to a few choices, without thinking that you can literally mind everything

Tho I don’t think people don’t believe in mind games, they just hate the term. But for some people, like borp, this is a perfect term. And most players pre M2k who were the best were the players with the best mind games. The reason M2k was nicknamed “the robot” was because he played differently from everyone back then- they all were winning by playing the player, while he was winning by covering the most options and punishing harder with each opening. (He still had mind games, they just weren’t why he was winning. He put punished you)
Mango was a hybrid. He was insanely technical and could overwhelm you with pressure and force you to act how he wanted you to, and then he would read your option and punish. (He still is doing that to this day.) But because punish game wasn’t as developed, there were less flowcharts and it was less about mixups because there was less pressure, and it was more about baiting and reading. So mind games was the best umbrella term way of saying “they are winning neutral more by being the smarter player”
"mind games" is just super vague people prefer more specific terms

My friend played borp. He kept screaming when borp grabbed him to mess up his tech chase. Borp didnt seem too pleased and didnt say a word to him
I'm sure he could be a top player if he did all that tech. But it's clear he wouldn't have fun. He has the mentality and reactions required. He proves fundies is golden.
I played against borp in doubles at a pittsburgh local a couple of weeks ago. I think I got shieldgrabbed at least 10 times in one game. no matter what I did it just felt like I gravitated to the spot in front of his shield every single time. playing against him was so alien to everything else I've ever experienced in the game

Borp is my melee idol. I also play sheik and I also have very little tech skill. Half the time I don't even use the c stick for aerials, mostly due to muscle memory. I just play for fun!
He's amazing, but he's the opposite of fun to me. He's only playing to win, which is fine, but I personally don't consider his gamestyle as fun whatsoever.
