Something that's always interested me about Plup is how he just does this kind of thing ALOT. Winning or losing, if he doesn't wanna play he just kinda gives up mid-set. He's still good enough that him not trying can still net him a set win as this set also proves. I've always felt like Plup could be the best player in the world if he just had the mental fortitude to continue playing as incredible as he's shown capable to do. It's definitely not easy to have that will, especially against even better players, but he's capable of so much and he's so emotive you can see the moment he tunes out the game usually, at any time in the set. This set and video is a really good introspective on a big trend for someone like Plup. Great video.

I think one of my favorite ultimately insignificant sets in Melee history has to be Taj vs. Colbol at The Big House 6. It was Taj's only major tournament that year, and he hadn't made a particularly notable run at any Melee tournament since Evo 2013 over three years prior. Then out of nowhere, he comes back to beat the No. 25 player in the world with Mewtwo, finishing in 33rd. From what I remember, that was Taj's last really notable win at a major tournament.

the big house 6 is full of those sets.
axe vs r2dliu, zain vs plup (it didn't matter for a while, after that) and I think rudolph vs ice? Big House is always filled with anomalous sets.

I think he mentioned enough of that in the video. His main point is that life isn't a story, where there's a clear main thread that summarizes absolutely everything. This is sometimes true, but the world is often a lot more complicated than that.
If Melee, and the world in general, had a script, then there would be tons of dropped plot arcs and no deeper meaning. Looking for grand narratives generally ends up with you being flat-out wrong. Sometimes, there is no real deeper meaning to analyze.

Puff is only good in melee because its THE Fox counterpick: turns Fox's best trait into a hazard and preventing the execution of the main Fox gameplan.

Bodies peach and ICS. Does well vs sheik as well. That's 3 of the other 6 in the top 8 that puff easily wins.

@@jakefromstatefarm6969 yes and most characters have 3-6 members of the cast they are strong against; if Fox was not the best character, Puff would have its roll usurped by the counter pick vs that best character; Puff punishes fast aggressive play, if the best character was DK for example, say all his attack started on frame 2 and had extended hit box/more invo frames: Puff would have very few tools that would be useful in that match up, the character with the best dodge+counter hit game would have Puffs current poition in the meta; Puff is good in each of your examples because its gameplan is unchanged, and thats the point of a counter pick: to force the opponent out of their optimal gameplan, while being able to execute their preferred method of combat.

@@leonvalenzuela4096 but its not just 3-6 characters that puff is strong against. Puff has a winning MU versus all but 4ish characters in the cast. That right there kinda makes her a top tier, regardless of the fox MU

@@jakefromstatefarm6969 you mean when looking at top two puffs in the world? we see that in no other players, Hbox and the other player is who everyone trains vs to get ready for Hbox; we see almost everyone else using Puff struggles vs far more than just 4, thats my point, Hbox is favored in that matchup, not puff
