BMW M6 0-100kmh Test: Can The V10 Symphony Keep Up With Modern Metal On A 0-62 Run?

  • A few weeks ago we were lucky enough to get our hands on an immaculate example of a E63 M6, yes the one with the fearsome V10 engine. We have actually had a E60 M5 work car for 10 years now, so are fairly familiar with the engines and SMG transmissions, however, we were genuinely surprised in the differences between the M5 and the M6.
    This video is the traditional Vbox Zeroto60 test. She's still a spicy meat ball.

    You should record 100-200 km/h time with this car. Recording 0-100 km.h with 1500 RPM start is absolutely useless!

    • @ZeroTo60Tube

      You are right, these are way more impressive on the 100-200kph run, but we try and emulate the old traffic light drag race scenario with this channel. FYI these fry tyres if you try and launch from too higher RPM. Anything higher that what you see here on a normal road surface results in a slower 0-100 time.

      You can try recording 100-160 km/h with this M6. It would be great if you test this speed range because leading German magazine Sport Auto tested M6 back in 2005 and they recorded 4.2s 0-100 km/h & 8.7s 0-160 km/h. So, they achieved 100-160 km/h in 4.5s. They also tested the car with 2 people on board (just like you!). That's why I really love to know how your M6 performs. We can compare it to a brand new M6 in 2005 and see the differences. So, go ahead and test this M6 with your Vbox! 100-160 km/h doesn't require more than 200 meters distance with such a powerful car like M6!

      Just noticed this, we will try and get the car back from the owner. However, in the mean time we could try it with our M5.

      @@ZeroTo60Tube Woooow! Great! I am so excited so see the times in your new video! Your channel is great! Yes, you can try 100-160 km/h with E60 M5 too. Let me tell you what German Sport Auto magazine achieved with M5 in late 2004. They recorded 4.5s 0-100 km/h and 9.2s 0-160 km/h which means 100-160 km/h in 4.7s! Let see what you will achieve with M5 in your new video! I wait for you to upload it! I introduced your channel to my friends too. They subscribed and loved it! This is a scan of the test data page of Sport Auto magazine which tested E60 M5 in 2004:

    Great vid guys! Love seeing some Aussie content on the UA-cam. Having an E60 M5 myself, I agree, these cars are hard to launch cleanly! One thing I noticed when you used launch control, is that the car did not upshift by itself. This is an indication that the car has either exited the LC program, or it never entered correctly. The usual cause of this is not depressing and holding the throttle to the floor, to the point where the kickdown switch is triggered. As soon as you lift the throttle ever so slightly, the DME aborts the LC as it thinks you are taking control. However, while keeping it floored the car will modulate the clutch to maintain traction and even take care of upshifts.
    The problem is of course trying to keep your foot pegged with all the violence of the launch... bit of a silly design.

    • @ZeroTo60Tube
      @ZeroTo60Tube  4 роки тому

      Thanks for checking the vid. There is a very good chance we lifted due to the wheel spin, it's second nature when you are so used to trying to put the power down. We've owned our e60 m5 since 2009 (work car, ha) and its never been quicker with the launch control. It always just lights the rear up and leaves the nice smell of clutch lingering for a few minutes (which is very worrying). That said we have never launched it on a drag strip/prepped surface. Its like the LC is tuned for a better surface that we ever get to launch on. Even lowering the launch RPM with the cruise stalk, didn't help its time. Have you had a chance to launch yours on a decent surface?

    Put Turbo Maxx oil additive in this car and it will save the rod bearings, will never need changed, unless they are already trashed before the additive is added.

    I've had mine for almost 9 years. I'm on my second engine but BMW replaced it under warranty for a total of $53.95USD out of my pocket. Mine has Dinan Suspension, Air Boxes, CF rears stress bar, Evolve Tune and AC Schnitzer Billet Aluminum Upper stress bars. I also have Tubi Mid-Pipe and Section 3 Exhausts. I daily drive my car and it has 128K miles between the two engines. It is an ABSOLUTE JOY to drive. I highly recommend them if you can afford the care and feeding.

      I would love to do the mods you have done. How long have you been running the Evolve tune? We test a E60 M5 back in 2017 with that tune and the higher rpm rev limit made shifts simply intoxicating.

  • @Sum_Ting_Wong
    @Sum_Ting_Wong 4 роки тому

    I had one of these cars. 5.5 is regular for a 0-60mph run.
    To get into 4 second bracket you need everything to be perfect, including a very tight clutch. Once I got mine, along with flywheel, replaced the difference was very noticeable.
    Try launching it with higher rpms (3000rpm+) that way you can access the power and torque band much earlier rather than from 0rpms. Launch control is pretty much useless to be honest as it implies 4000rpm is the best rev point but in reality its in the 3000rpms.
    Remember these engines are like big VTEC power units, the power is developed way high up in the rev range.

    • @ZeroTo60Tube
      @ZeroTo60Tube  4 роки тому

      Very good info and totally agree with it all. We have gotten our e60 in the 4 a couple of times, but that was many years ago and only one person in the car. Then again these are about so much more than just the 0-60. How long ago did you sell yours?

    • @Sum_Ting_Wong
      @Sum_Ting_Wong 4 роки тому

      @@ZeroTo60Tube I sold mine in 2015, I only had it for 18 months. They're woefully unreliable and a constant source of aggravation. However, when they do work properly they are utterly epic cars. By the time I had everything replaced on mine, it was pretty much a brand new car 🤣....from what I could tell on yours, the clutch is starting to slip slightly too hence the wheelspin even well into the rev range. The friction plate on the clutch wears out very fast one these compared to regular M cars with a manual gearbox (I know its SMG3 but the hardware is the same underneath it all). You can also prolong clutch life by slightly lifting off the accelerator when changing gear as you would do a regular manual car.

    • @ZeroTo60Tube
      @ZeroTo60Tube  4 роки тому

      Yes, a big issue with the SMG is people not knowing what is actually going on with the transmission and clutch setup. That is very good advice about lifting off during the shifts. Not only helps the clutch but makes them a lot smoother to drive.

      For a car to drive, as long as it’s been maintained it will be fine. Clutch will most likely be due soon and expect to do rod bearing ASAP. But aside from those I wouldn’t expect other costs apart from normal oil changes, plugs, filters etc.
      If the car has no maintenance history, you’ll need to dig deep when checking it out. If it’s has long oil change intervals, things like vanos issues are more likely to arise. So a good pre purchase inspection is worth doing.
      But if priced reflecting the higher mileage, buy it, look after it and drive it!!!! 👌

      Depends where you getting the info from. And also whether they tested 0-60mph or 0-62mph/0-100km/h. BMW Australia claimed 4.6 0-100km/h for the M6 coupe and 4.7 0-100km/h for the M5 sedan. We done over 100 timed launches in our e60 m5, only once did we break in to the 4's, high 5's low 6's are normal. The manufacturer times always used to be quite optimistic. But it was interesting getting low 5's in this car. The M6 does appear to be faster off the line.
