Since sometimes I think I have more money than sence I've gone through a number of turntables over the last 5 years. Including a Rega, a Project and a U-turn I feel like I've found a wonderful combination and a Fluance rt85. In my opinion it takes what is strong about the others and combines it into one turntable. I am 60 years old and have gone through many turntables in my lifetime and I find that I enjoy this one the best. It plays some of the older albums I have from the mid-60s all the way into new pressings. I agree with this review in many aspects especially with the tonearm lever as he described it is too small.. I have one regret though.... They had not introduced the bamboo as that would have been the one I would have purchased instead of the piano black. But maybe I ought to put another turntable in the house ! Keep turning.
I’ve had the RT85 for 2 years now and I truly have enjoyed every minute of owning it (for the most part). If your contemplating getting this unit or not, I would say pull the trigger, you won’t regret it.
A little late entry here, but I have to say that was an excellent video. I was offered an outstanding price on this TT today and just wanted to learn a bit more about it. You were very helpful and so were the comments. Great album choices btw.
I was going to buy this turn table an wanted and watched this review, thank you for your opinion. This purchase was to replace my loved Dual 701 that I bought in 1973. I did asked you about this, at that point. I was trying to find a motor and make that choice of the rebuild. I did rebuild the Dual 701, with the help of “fix my dual” it back in true form. I just love the Dual 701. Thank you for your time to give me a note back to give positive advice on the Fluance 85. Thanks for this review.
Good review ATTACK. I almost bought one but got the Audio Technics LP 3 instead. I needed automatic operation so the family can use it too. Happy with my purchase so far.
I have an RT85 and am very pleased for the most part... I too noticed that on the way down the cueing lever, when brought all the way forward in one steady motion lowers the tonearm nicely... on the way up the action is not so hydraulically "damped" but that is easily corrected for... just gently move the cueing lever back with a slow steady motion... the arm in turn will raise gently and not bounce up as shown in the video above.
I got one for Christmas and it has my records bumping soooooo clean and pristine, like I have never heard before. And it shines in rock, metal, and Jazz holyshit Jazz
Another great review. Although I had already chosen this table for my upgrade once my money pot can cover it. This made me feel more confident I am making the right choice for me. Thanks and love the videos.
A quality thoughtful review. Well done. Hats off to Fluance for making it possible a quality entry point to the vinyl experience. Love your reference gear. Greg
I know this is an older review, but I loved your approach... it was fact-filled but also very laid back. I never felt overwhelmed at all. I got my RT85 on October 2, 2021. So after a year I can say it's been fantastic. At first, I thought the Ortofon 2m Blue was the end-all-be-all, but I can hear some of the nuances on it. It's a little bit schrill on the highs, and at times, I'd say screeching on the highs. A little fatiguing at first. After about 40 hours or so of break-in, it has totally settled in and still sounds awesome one year later.
I've had the bamboo RT-85 for eight months with the Schiit Mani as the phono amp. Your review was spot-on, both positive and negatives. I had the Ortofon 2m Blue on my previous TT, so it was very clear that the table itself was a clear upgrade. As you detailed, none of the negatives were deal-breakers and it makes it real easy just to enjoy the vinyl. I hate talking about the point of diminishing returns but this TT really makes it difficult to consider spending more $$$ on a TT. Loving the channel, keep up the good work.
In the current market, you'd have to start to get into the neighborhood of a thousand dollars to make an upgrade really worth while I'd say. I'm glad you liked the review!
@@thevinylattack I think it does but I upgraded preamps around the same time as well and have not switched things around to pin down exactly what makes things sound how they do
I am an old-schooler. Currently running a Pioneer SX-850 with a Pioneer PL-117D table. I decided to give a modern table spin. After viewing your review and many others, I just ordered an RT-85. All reviews that I have spent the time to view have been very positive about the table. I am quite excited to hear the Ortofon 2M Blue stylus. FYI... Your review was the most comprehensive and thorough. Well Done!
@@ungarlinski7965 I have a Pioneer PL-117D table, which is nearing the 50-year mark. It has a replacement AT cartridge. I have not used the new Fluance table much yet, and most certainly, the Ortofon 2 Blue is still in the break-in period. I immediately noticed a difference in volume, but I also could pick up more subtleties in horns, guitars, cymbal crashes, etc. I still need to do more listening with a greater variety of music to compare the sound stages of the AT and Ortofon. My initial take is that the sound stage has improved, too. I want to get more listening hours in, but at this point, I am happy with my purchase. The Fluance RT85 is not a disappointment. Now, I am considering putting together a modern system as well. 🙂
Great video! The “problem” with Fluance is that their entry level TT is a great value, but every turntable up in the line is worth the $$ for the upgrade from the one below it.
Good review I'm upgrading my turntable (Audio Technica LP 60) very soon and have been reviewing different brands. I think your review just convinced me that the Fluance RT85 is the best choice. I was back and forth between Project and Fluance but I think the RT85 is the best turntable in this price range.
I have RT81 an it is nothing short than amazing!!! I has a built in pre-amp for the potential newbie out there looks and sounds amazing. Fluance is legit folks
I own the Fluance RT81, 83 and the 85 and love all three of them. I'm not an audiophile so I suppose I'm easier to please but I have been buying records for 60 years so I suppose that makes me at least a bit of an expert when it comes to turntables and sound quality and these Fluance tables hit the mark with both sound reproduction and terrific looks to match. I'd highly recommend all three.
@@frenchustube I honestly do not have a favorite as such. I use the RT81 in my den to take advantage of the internal preamp with powered speakers because space is at a premium. I use the RT85 in my living room with the PA10 preamp. I’m very satisfied with the sound reproduction I get from both tables. As I stated in my original post, I’m not an audiophile so I’m nowhere near as fussy when it comes to sound reproduction. If it sounds good to my ears, I’m satisfied. My opinion of Fluance turntables hasn’t changed. They’re still terrific.
Great review. I appreciate your insight and honest comments on this unit. I currently have a Sota Moonbeam/Grado Gold and wish to upgrade. Considered the Fluance, but don’t believe that it would be an upgrade. Continue the good work.
It would be a lateral move at best. I would suggest hanging on to your Moonbeam and upgrading the feet on your Moonbeam with the brass feet available on the SOTA website. I just did and there was a definite improvement in the sound and cosmetics of the deck. Also, upgrade the cartridge to a Grado woodie or the Ortofon 2M Bronze, one step above the Blue.
Great review, I would love to see fluance take this table to the next level and offer a fully automatic version of the rt85. No one else offers a fully auto table that high quality anymore. I own a rt85 and once the 2m blue is broken in the sound is amazing to me.
A fully automatic would raise the price, limiting sales to those with significantly more disposable cash. It's too bad fully automatic turntables get negative reviews. I myself have a restored Dual 1219 with a 7 lb die cast platter and monster drive motor, which I'll happily compare to a $2000 turntable.
I knew you were Super Chris....the shirt confirms it!!!! great vid Cris. Excellent info and very informative. Personally I like the auto stop....wish my P3 had it. All the best to you from Newfoundland ...be safe and thank you for the great vids you do. Cheers
I purchased my Rt85 about 3 months ago, installed an LED light strip in the back of the turntable pointing towards the acrylic platter and it looks great but the sound is why we are all here. It’s well worth the $499 price tag. My Vinyl experience has skyrocketed since my purchase. Just the other day I was spinning the RIO album by Duran Duran and I was in awe of the clarity & sounds that I never heard before, especially on the title track! If you’re torn between this & another TT, give the RT85 the nod as I did & sit back and enjoy! Great Review!
That Rio album you played. Was it an original pressing? Or the latest reissue? I have an original pressing and it’s lacking bass and mids and sounds muddy. I have the RT-85 as well btw
I’ve had a RT85 for almost two years. I would recommend this TT without hesitation. I’ve heard many decks that are much more expensive that don’t sound better. I think it’s been a solid deck, even though I expect I’ll be in the market for a MC TT/cartridge in the next year or so. Curious, what TT/cartridge are you using currently? And I would live to hear a review of the EAT phono stage or phono stages, in general.
I'm also curious what cartridge would be considered a good upgrade, that would be slightly more affordable than something like the 2m Black. I've had the RT85 for a little over a year, and know eventually I'm going to need a new stylus, and am lost in the sea of choices.
When it comes to moving magnet, I really like the Nagaoka series. I started with an MP 110 on an old Technics I had and most recently used an MP 150 on my Clearaudio until I picked up the Hana ML.
@@thevinylattack I'm a big fan of the Nagaoka series as well. I have the MP150 on my Technics SL-1500C! Love it! I have also heard that the 2M Bronze is also an excellent Ortofon stylus as well and was recommended to me by the owner of Crescendo Fine Audio here in Denver.
I would also go Nagoaka MP-150 or even MP-200 if you can stretch it. I went from the 2M Blue to the MP-200 on my 1210gr and it was a significant uograde. However the 2M Blue is still very capable, what phono stage are you running? I would argue this should be a first worthy upgrade if not already.
@@TLA1014 I haven't heard the Bronze in person, but I've heard positive things about it as well. I just wonder if the Ortofon house sound is just a too bright for me.
Great review! The RT 85 would be my choice of all the Fluance models, and other similar brands IE: Project, etc. A better choice of arm material would be also be nice, along with an adjustable VTA.
I've had and used a JVC L-F210 TT since I bought it new when it was first introduced, and that has been my workhorse deck ever since. It has weathered four moves and has never failed. Well, until about six months ago when the counterweight shaft broke. I managed to do an iffy repair but decided it was time to let it go. Replacing the tonearm was too expensive relative to the cost of a new deck, so I bought the Fluance RT85. I should note that I have a recording studio and have no need for a listening room, so LPs are played through my JBL studio monitors. My initial impressions are that this TT, in almost every way, is excellent. The sound, to my ears, is well balanced and defined. I have read some reviews that state that the bass is somewhat lacking, but I did not find that to be the case. My only issue is that there is a low frequency hum and also some noise in the midrange that grounding the table did nothing to eliminate. It is quite low in level, and most albums will bury the noise (indeed, at normal listening levels it's inaudible), but it is there and when looking at the scope one can see that it may color the sound somewhat as there is a bit of energy being applied to the signal. Nothing I tried, including having it on its own AC outlet to taking everything else in the studio off line helped. To Fluance's credit, they were very responsive in trying to help me trouble shoot the problem and have decided to send me a new headshell, thinking that may be where the issue lies. I do hope that will fix the issue, as I really like the deck. And BTW, I see no fault in the finish (gloss black). Maybe Fluance has updated their finishing techniques since this review was conducted. Love your channel.
After rocking a Numark TT-1510 for 18 or so years (it was serviceable at best, but the price was right when I was in college), I upgraded to an RT 85 last month, and it's a night and day improvement. It sounds amazing and has completely changed how I listen to music. I love it.
I have ordered the RT 85 turntable. For speakers I have 2 QSC K12.2 powered speakers that i hope will hook up to this. I also ordered the Fluance Pre-amp. can't wait till i get it all hooked up
As an amateur audiophile looking to move up step by step I am leaving my trusted Audio Tech 120 for this model. I actually liked the fact that it did NOT have a pre-amp as I would not have to go in and remove it, and the Ortofon Blue was the closer when comparing Rega and Pr-Ject in similar price ranges. Awesome review, I liked that you tested with my level of equipment and higher end tech.
Have been waiting for this review since you posted the unboxing last week. In the market for an upgrade and have had my eye on both this table and the Pro-Ject Debut Carbon Evo. Still haven't made a decision, but have been leaning towards the RT85 for the acrylic platter and detachable headshell option. Thanks for all the great content!
Christopher I have an Pro Ject debut carbon Espirit. I love it. But it has an Ortofon 2M red, and I imagine the 2M blue on this Fluance is a nice step up.
I can see that being a tough choice. The platter is great on the 85 but the Pro Ject has a tone arm that's hard to beat in the price range. Let us know what you decide.
Alright, through much deliberation and many many reviews read, I ended up going with the Pro-Ject DC Evo. It should be here Thursday. So excited for it! Now I just need to figure out what album to play first 🤔
Hey brother great review! I’ve had my RT-85 for about a year and a half now and I’ve had zero issues with mine and would definitely recommend it to anyone! My previous TT was the AT-LP120, and the Fluance was a huge upgrade in terms of sound and build quality. Cheers🤘
Just ordered an RT85 a few days ago, completely new to the vinyl world. Needless to say, I couldn't be more anxious for it to arrive and have been following the tracking info intently. I plan to pair it with a set of Klipsch "The Sixes" powered bookshelf speakers, which I chose because of the built in pre-amp that will simplify the setup (at least to start). I can see myself making some upgrades to pre-amp and speakers sometime in the future, but I can't wait to get my feet wet in the vinyl world, especially with a turntable that I expect to be pleased with for years to come. Thank you for your thoughts!
What would you choose between RT85 and the Project EVO with the Sumiko? I’m also curious what amp you’d run with the Project. Choices - choices - and more choices. 🤪
I really like the EVO because of the Sumiko. The Ortofon Blue is just a little too bright for my tastes. The RT 85 is a great table for the money though and if you prefer a more lively sound, it may be for you. There are too many amps to list really, lots of great choices out there.
Yep. Fluance RT 85 (and a Technics SL-1200 MK2) into a Shciit Mani = audio bliss😁. I totally agree with the cue lever lift action and lack of VTA. But the Tecnics has VTA adjustment and very smooth cuing lift action - and I only paid 20 bucks….a lucky find for sure. Great review.
The RT85 is at the top of my list for my nest TT. They now have the RT85N with a Nagaoka MP110 instead of the Ortofon 2M Blue. Will likely go with the 2M, but may switch knowing the MP110 ahs warmer sound. That was the best review of the RT85 I've ever seen, and your music selections for the tests were great.
I've had my RT 84 for a couple of weeks and being new to the vinyl scene I am more than pleased with the unbelievable quality of sound I am listening to. I do get some issues with static so I'm guessing an upgrade to the acrylic platter will help with this.
I’ve been without a TT for 28 years and just received my RT 85N since the “N” option is for Nagoaka cartridge. In my research, I thought the 2M blue was the end-all with that nude stylus and a great value on this $499 TT but realized how much more I’d spend replacing that stylus/cartridge in the future. Nagoaka MP-110 is $150 and Ortofon 2M Blue is $240. So I bought the Nagoaka option. I feel buyers remorse sometimes, then put the needle in the groove and the sound is AWESOME. It’s weird that my CDs (it’s all I’ve used for decades) required my base turned up to max and I assumed it’s my old HK receiver was weak. I put on my old vinyl, after cleaning, and on the new RT 85N last week and the base is back! I keep it neutral now.. I almost got the ProJect with Ortofon Red at $50 more, but settled on this Rt85N since $500 was already pushing it. Great channel
I have a RT81 that I upgraded with the 2M blue. The cartridge is a good fit on my home theater with Marantz receiver and Elac Debut Reference bookshelf’s. It’s a great cartridge.
Finally a review that mentions the feet! I do feel that that is my biggest qualm after having it a while. I find myself adjusting them a little too frequently to make sure the platter is level. And it’s on a steady, heavy surface so it seems a little silly to me. Fantastic otherwise.
I have had the now discontinued RT84. I love it and am very pleased with it's performance. I did find the OM2 Blue to be bright for me as well. I changed it out for an AT VM540ML which I find to be much smoother and more satisfying. I use a Cambridge phono pre and overall couldn't be happier. BTW, nice merch. I bought a t-shirt because I enjoy the channel and love the logo. Keep up the good work. Thx.
Hi, I've had the RT85 for a few months. I too upgraded the headshell and a AT VM540ML cart... and do think it's "warmer" and the fine line stylus tracks better than the Orto elliptical. Better separation and imaging too. It did require some tweaks though as the 2 carts are "very close" in height but that pesky cheap cue device would not lower the needle fully, even with adjustment. Ok for 180gram records but not regular thickness ones. No help from Fluance though they were prompt to reply. Finally solved by taking the rubber strip off the cue arm. This also helps get closer to the 2 degree steeper VAT spec for the At stylus ( as opposed to adding a mat). I knew nothing of VATs when I bought the TT. All in all very happy with it none the less...big improvement over an ancient AT full auto. Very good review!
@@dennismanning6684 I feel like that's a pretty common growing pain so to speak. As you gain knowledge in the hobby, you find tweaks you'd like to do and realize you'll probably have to upgrade to do them.
@@thevinylattack Yep, ye old rabbit hole... I second you suggestions for Fluance to offer an upgraded model with adjustable VTA and better cueing device. The good side is I'm enjoying 50 old albums again!
I actually have an 81. The 85 is my next upgrade, but it will still be a few years. I have had my 81 for almost 3 years of heavy usage and I have yet to encounter a single problem. It’s a fantastic table that sounds phenomenal for the price.
Thanks for your Honest review, I do own and love my RT-85 and get pleasure from testing different catridges such as At-VM95E, VM95EN , VM-95ML and the red Ortofon and each time I discover something new from my vinyl. I also have several Dual TT and one Technics SL-D212 which sometimes share the blue Ortofon and it sounds great as well. For now I rather invest in cartidges then in a new turn table but I do have my eye set on The Marrantz TT15S1.
A couple of years ago I waited and waited for the RT85 to come back in stock after their initial sellout. I finally gave up after 5 months and bought the Project Debut Carbon with the Ortofon 2M Blue. Most of my turntable play time is actually a vintage Pioneer PL530. I am now looking to upgrade to my "last turntable" I will ever buy.
Awesome review! Question: what are your thoughts on the new RT85N with the Nagaoka cartridge? You mentioned the Blue seems be a little treble heavy. Do you think the Nagaoka MP-110 will reduce this and maybe add some low tones?
Thanks for the review. I have owned the RT85 for about 3 months and I am very pleased. I agreed that something needs to be improved with the lift lever, it is my biggest peeve. This is probably not my last turntable I will probably upgrade in a year or so. I am currently looking at upgrading my preamp...phono stage...i would love to see you review some of these in the sub $1000 region, ss and tube.
I bought one to replace my 40+ year old Nikko P50. Paired it with an integrated amp from Rotel (RA-1572) andcouldnt be happier. Only thing I am not a fan off is the fact that the platter starts up when you return the tonearm to its rest after the record finished playing. Got used to that right quick tho ;)
Got the RT85 in Jan 2021, amazing turntable for $499. It replaced a Dual CS741Q. I sold the RT85 and got the Mofi StudioDeck with the UltraTracker cartridge. Definitely was a gateway table for me.
I love my RT-85. Mine is walnut, but I'm loving the bamboo look. I use a Musical Fidelity V90-LPS phono stage with mine. The Schitt Mani was out of stock due to COVID! I also dislike the plastic parts, but overall I'm very pleased with my purchase. The 2M Blue is a great upgrade from the OM 5E that came with my Pro-Ject Essential II.
I just found your channel after watching a few Fluance videos. I own the RT84 and am looking to upgrade to the acrylic platter. (I wonder if it's worth the $120) I love your style and look forward to checking out you other reviews.
Unless you're thinking of upgrading to a new turntable altogether at a higher price point, I think it's a good upgrade. Do you lose a bit of value because you did it piece-meal? Yeah. But it's not a rip-off and I think the improvement is worth it.
I am in the group you referred to as considering a Fluance turntable purchase. After watching your review of the RT85 I believe that I favor it over the ProJect Debut Carbon Evo which i was also considering. I like that the RT85 comes with Ortofon 2M Blue. I also agree that the Bamboo plinth is quite appealing. Now if I can locate one in Bamboo I believe I am ready to marry an RT85 and Fluance phono stage to my Anthem and Martin Logans. Thanks so much for the review!
I was pretty much already sold on the RT85. Your pleasant, and thoughtful review made it that much more enticing. I have been a record collector for years with two very modest set ups. I'm looking to upgrade my Technics SL-1210MK2 with the Ortofon Blue Cartridge. I would also like to pick up the RT85 for my office rig. Thanks for makin quality content.
I would like to try the Ortofon Red on my Technics table, Just not sure if it is compatible with the Technics headshell on it currently. Any knowledge on this would be helpful. Some other cartridge suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
After a lot of reading I came to this short list. $299 * Fluance RT-82 * Music Hall MMF 1.5 $475-$499 * Pro-Ject Debut Carbon EVO * Audio-Technica AT-LP1240-USB * Rega Planar 1 …but, I found a U-Turn Orbit with acrylic platter, Ortofon 2M Red, and cue arm that was meticulously cared for and very nicely priced. I’m looking toward the Schitt Mani to pair with it. Loved hearing your thoughts on the Fluance, it really looks nice, thanks for doing these vids!
Did you ever buy a 2m Blue stylus to replace the 2m Red (can use the same cart with either stylus)? I have an Orbit Special but have not upgraded to a Blue stylus yet.
@@CosmicKnight1 saves you a little...price for just the 2m Blue stylus is $204 currently, but at least you don't have to futz with realigning the cartridge, just an easy stylus replacement. Do be careful though to not damage it during the install.
Very happy with my RT85. I’ve owned it for approximately one year, in that year I’ve tweaked it a little, I wasn’t happy with the azimuth so I purchased a Ortofon L-4000 headshell with adjustable azimuth, because of this the VTA needed adjusting this was accomplished by adding a 4mm shim also I needed to add extra weight to achieve the correct VTF. After all of this sonically it’s a great improvement. The turntable is connected directly to my receiver a Sansui G-7700 with AR94 speakers.
I bought the RT-82 cause they were out of the 84/85 at the time, with the acrylic platter that i bought separately which the same as the 85, except the cartridge. Nice unit...BUT had bad ground loop(hum) issues...wall-wart i'd suspect, and yes I got dedicated ground/block-8' ground-rod and the "auto-stop" function mess's with the play speed when it was turned on....anyway I sent it back and got looked over, only to still have the same issues, even with a different cartridge(Sumiko Olympia).... Soooooo I got the Audio Technica at-140xp that uses a REAL AC wall plug paired with the Sumiko.....and it's AWESOME....NO MORE HUM
I'm looking to upgrade my turntable at some point and I am considering the rt85 and the pro-ject debut Carbon EVO. I'm leaning towards the rt85 a little bit more because of the 2m blue and the acrylic platter. I wish it had a better tonearm though.
Chris, this was a really great unbiased review. I was teetering between this and the Pro-Ject DC EVO as a turntable upgrade, you almost got me to buy this one, but the Carbon, just narrowly edged it out and I ended up ordering that one instead. But still, keep up the good work you're doing by providing us with these types of reviews. Cheers man!
I'm also considering these two, what put your over the edge on the EVO over the fluance? I was also considering a customized orbit with the acrylic platter, 2M blue and cue lever option for $595 CAD vs the EVO $750 CAD and Fluance are $650 CAD. Either of you have thoughts on these options? Great video, cheers!
@@KS-ft5dj I prefer the cueing system and cartridge on the Evo. At this price point, it really comes down to personal preference as they are both good choices.
@@KS-ft5dj Chris beat me to the exact answer I was going to give you; it all comes down to your personal preference. The Ortofon 2M Blue and the acrylic platter are some great features on the Fluance. Those are worth a lot of money on their own. For me, it was the Carbon Fiber tonearm that was the deciding factor.
@@samuraix73 yes, if Fluance would offer a carbon fiber arm at the next price point (maybe called a RT-86) it would be great. How about a real solid wood plinth for a RT-87. Haha
Very good review. I'm upgrading from my entry level AT120, and this Fluance RT-85 looks like a better option than the Pro-Ject, Music Hall, and, Riga units. Since I have an MP-110 and Mani on my AT120, and since they share a headshell arrangement, it makes perfect sense to get the OM-Blue version of the 85, as I'll then have the options of the Blue or MP-110. Also, maybe the AT headshell I have will be a bit more comfortable to queue.
Great review! I'll be purchasing myself a new turntable & amp in the next couple of weeks. I've been looking at this, the Rega 3 & the Technics 1500C but I think this review has sold me. What would you consider to be a good amp to go with this? My budget is roughly 500 euro for one. I currently am running a Pioneer PL-100 & a Technics A-600 MK3 amp so I'm looking forward to the better sound quality over all.
I bought an U-Turn Orbit Special and am happy with it. Will upgrade the 2m Red to a 2m Blue stylus one day. My only wish is that yes, I wish I had a removeable headshell so I could have two different cartridges, either to get a different sonic characteristic or simply to have a cheaper one to use for playing questionable "flea market, yard sale, or used" vinyl until I'm sure it won't damage my better cartridge.
Fantastic review! I’m currently using a AT-LP120BT-USB and it’s been great - I love the look of the bamboo and when the time comes to upgrade the RT85 would be a consideration - just wondering if it’s a big enough step up from my current turntable.
I have the same turntable myself for several years... it's clear this RT85 would be a great upgrade for people like us. Although I have been experimenting with different cartridges (not necessarily the 2m Blue) so I wonder how this will be impacted.
I too had the same AT-LP120 USB turntable you have and wasnt quite happy with it, although it is a great value. I took the plunge and bought a Fluance RT85 and a Schitt Mano preamp a couple of years ago.....definitely a solid upgrade and am very happy/satisfied. I dont feel i need to go any further up the turntable chain....
Quick question, how would the sound change if I plug this table straight into a pair of powered speakers that comes with a preamp such as the Klipsch R-15PM Powered Monitors. Is it better to have all parts (preamp, amp, passive speakers) separate vs integrated? P.S. I love how you know names of AIC members.
The sound will end up being pretty dependent upon the powered speakers at that point. It's not necessarily a bad thing, and for some people an all in one solution is a great idea for cost and space. For me though, I much prefer separates as I can have more control over the final sound.
what would be good speakers to pair with the RT85 and the 2M blue to get the most out of my table and amp? I have a ifi zen phono, just missing the speakers which hopefully can come in white.
I have owned RT 85 almost a year now, although it’s a nice looking and great sounding turntable, I have issues with acoustic feedback. The Plinth design on these turntables ( at least the Walnut one that I own) have no damping factor. I have tried all different types of isolation platforms and to my dismay I had no luck isolating the feedback. It all centers on the poor isolation properties of the Plinth. I was not able to use it in my dedicated music room due to this fact. I have several other brand turntables that I have had no issues using in the same room. If it wasn’t for this issue I have with it, it would be an outstanding turntable
I was having bass feedback issues with my ProJect as well. What finally fixed the problem was getting the turntable well up in the air, above the plane of the speakers.
@@jeremyr722 In my listening room the turntable is about even height with the large speakers that I am using, but the speakers are out in front and away of the turntable. I do not use the dust cover on the table when I’m using it ( I know that will be the next question ) My equipment rack where the turntable is located is on a very heavy and stable and it’s on a concrete foundation. I just have had no previous problems other turntables (approximately in the same price range) in that same location with identical equipment being used
Hmm... yeah you’re right, the dust cover was my next thought. Tell ya what tho, I used stick-on sorbathane strips on the inside of my dust cover, and my system will get feedback if I DON’T have the cover on there. Good luck, you’ll find the solution eventually
I'd imagine it comes down to the size of your room. I didn't experience any feedback issues, but I can see how it could be a problem. I'm sorry to hear it.
I sold my uturn Orbit plus and bought an RT82 and paired it with my Ortofon 2M Red and 2M Blue cartridges. I’m in love with this table. The sound is far more detailed and lively compared to Uturn. No regrets.
Hello! For this review you mention using 3 albums to test turntables-one of them being The Cure’s Mixed Up. Do you have this as a picture disc or regular vinyl? I already bought Katanga and I have AiC’s Facelift. Thanks!
I have this bad boy on its way rn and I cannot wait to throw on Bleed the Freak and then Love, Hate, Love. Will be my first turntable ever, and as nervous about setting it up as I am, I can't wait to hear Layne screaming bloody murder into my ears!
Thanks for the review, I just purchased this TT and I am enjoying it very much my only concern is I get a snapping sound while playing.I checked there website and they say it's normal for the first 20 hr break in period, just wondering if you also experienced this?
I personally have not. It could be the records, it could be a staticy environment, it could indeed be the turntable. It's hard to diagnose without being there.
Those older Marantz tables can really be fantastic depending on the condition. A new toy can certainly be fun, but it's not always necessary. Let us know what you decide.
@@davidbailey6350 I would definitely look at a new cart. It's a relatively affordable way to change up your sound without having to buy a whole new table.
A fantastic review. I am not in the market for a table but this was a well presented, articulate, and informative review. I would love to see this continue on the channel and I think it is extremely helpful and educational for both new and veteran enthusiasts. Great video as always mate!
I was considering it and went in end with pro-ject debut carbon evo for one reason only. Fluance is not available in Europe and with shipping and import taxes it would cost 1700€ while pro-ject carbon evo was 540€ and available for pickup in store right away with professional setup. Phono preamp, and speakers with turn table where still under 1000€
is this better then the ProJect Debut Carbon Evo ? I am ONLY considering this as I like the auto shut off as I am not usually at the ready to stop the playback on time....thanks for all your great vids
hello! thanks for the review. I am in a cool situation where a great condition pioneer pl-630 is for sale very close to me, and priced the same as the RT85. The RT85 was originally going to be my purchase but then discovered the pioneer. the 630 functions properly but im unsure if it has been serviced at all, so i do have to take that into consideration. any adivce on what to pick here? thanks!!
Without seeing the Pioneer and knowing its condition, I can't really say. They do have a good resale value though, so if it's a cheap sale you might question why.
Will you recommend a technics sl 1700? It costs around 480 dollars and this will be my first TT so im looking for options under 500 as I saw in your previous video hope you can guide me with your answer greetings from Chile
It would depend on the condition its in. As a used machine you'd have to do that inspection yourself. If it's in good working order, it's a very nice turntable for the money.
Saving up for this one, as it seems to provide the most vinyl acoustic satisfaction per buck. Question: Can the three isolation feet be removed and replaced? I use IsoAcoustics Iso-Pucks for my JBL monitors, and wonder if those would thread in. Thanks, Chris!!
Woah i just ordered RT85 walnut with the holiday promo of free PA10 phono preamp. After watching this review i am confused if i should have waited and got the bamboo version
I have just purchased the RT85 Blue , I am still awaiting the unit. I will be pairing the RT85 with the Denon PMA-600NE your thoughts on adding a pre-amp, even though the 600NE has a built-in pre-amp?
Great Review. Really looking for the tone arm to return to its holder? I have lifted the tone arm lever too quickly bounced the tone arm a few times up and down scared the crap out of me as I could imagine it striking the record. With that said it really looks like a great choice. Any opinions on the Denon DP-400 or the Denon Brand? Thank You!
I am directly in line with the review given, having owned an RT85W for almost two years now. I have the walnut finish and think it is closer to a furniture grade than being a lesser veneer. That being said, I do wish that Fluance would stop calling the plinth "solid wood", when in fact it is veneer covered MDF. It is very nice, however, it is not solid wood. Also, I'm on the same page about the lack of a VTA . That would be a nice addition to what I feel is a very nice turntable. It checks a lot of the necessary boxes and is in a great place in regards to the point of diminished returns.
I have a Rega RP1 (for many years now), with the ortofon 2M Red. Would you think this is a good upgrade for my TT? I was thinking of the Rega Planar 2, but its pricier and the cartridge (Carbon I think) is not better than the 2M Blue. Wich one would you suggest?
Wonderful, articulate review Chris - thanks so much! I’m wondering if in your opinion (or anyone else’s, for that matter) there is a significant jump in quality when you spend $1000 on a turntable as opposed to $500?….
There certainly is. Better isolation ,better tonearm and bearings, better motor, higher mass platter usually, better installed cartridge, nicer finish.............
Same about the bamboo. Looks killer. Gifted one to my sister though. She was blown away. I got the 85 in walnut still pretty awesome though.
One thing I did was get a ortofon red for my older vinyl it's not quite as aggressive.
It's never a bad idea to have another turntable ;-)

I love my RT-85 and spin it up daily after work to unwind. Definitely recommend it to anyone thinking about picking up a vinyl habit.
I’ve had the RT85 for 2 years now and I truly have enjoyed every minute of owning it (for the most part). If your contemplating getting this unit or not, I would say pull the trigger, you won’t regret it.
Thanks for sharing!
A little late entry here, but I have to say that was an excellent video. I was offered an outstanding price on this TT today and just wanted to learn a bit more about it. You were very helpful and so were the comments. Great album choices btw.
Thank you for the kind words.
Glad I could help!
I am adding a turntable set up to my home office. The RT-85 is a leading possibility. Thanks for informative and timely review. Great video.
Glad it was helpful!
I love mine. It’s a great turntable!
Good review ATTACK. I almost bought one but got the Audio Technics LP 3 instead. I needed automatic operation so the family can use it too. Happy with my purchase so far.
It's awesome to hear that you're including the family in your music hobby.
Glad I could help!
A quality thoughtful review. Well done. Hats off to Fluance for making it possible a quality entry point to the vinyl experience. Love your reference gear. Greg
Thanks. I had a great time making this video and I'm looking forward to doing more in the future.
I'm happy to hear that you like it.
I have the Yamaha tsr 7810 which has a phono connection on the back. Would I still need a pre amp?
@@adam_3673 not necessarily. If you like the way it sounds, go with it!
Bought this unit 3 months ago (in piano black), and I’m just as in love with it today (maybe more) than I was the day it arrived.
I'm happy to hear that. I think you'll be happy with it for a long time to come.
Had mine for over a year now. Upgraded to ortofon 2m bronze and could not be happier. Blue was great but bronze took it to the next level
@@aaronschultz7382 I'd like to spend some more time with a bronze to see if it levels off that bite I tend to get from the blue.
@@thevinylattack I think it does but I upgraded preamps around the same time as well and have not switched things around to pin down exactly what makes things sound how they do
Any mention of Alice in Chains (particularly 'Facelift') gets a like!
One of my all time faves.
Well Done!
Let me know what you think of it when you've had some time to break it in.
Have you tried it yet? I have the Pioneer SX-780 myself, and an old Scott TT (piece of crap). I'm ready to upgrade the TT.
It's nice that they offer a line that can work with pretty much every budget.
this is the best review of a piece of audio gear I've heard in ages....thank you.
Wow, thanks!
LOVE my RT 85! got mine at launch and have zero regrets with the purchase
It's a nice table for sure.
Good review I'm upgrading my turntable (Audio Technica LP 60) very soon and have been reviewing different brands. I think your review just convinced me that the Fluance RT85 is the best choice. I was back and forth between Project and Fluance but I think the RT85 is the best turntable in this price range.
I'm glad the video was helpful.
I've yet to try the 81, but I can't imagine it being a bad buy after having spent time with the 83 and 85. Good stuff.
David, since you have the 81,83 and 85 do you have a favorite and can you tell the difference between the three in term of sound?thanks
Glad it was helpful.
It's generally because people who want high quality tables don't want automatic tables.
Lovely video, great review. Feels like friends discussing music and gear. All we need is a few scoops. Also, thanks for the new record suggestions.
Glad you enjoyed it!
I knew you were Super Chris....the shirt confirms it!!!! great vid Cris. Excellent info and very informative. Personally I like the auto stop....wish my P3 had it. All the best to you from Newfoundland ...be safe and thank you for the great vids you do.

I liked the auto stop too, I was a little spoiled using it for the past few weeks.
Amazing that you think the autostop is great! All japanese and european tables had this 60 years ago! Perhaps you should buy his t shirts instead
Just ordered it in Bamboo. Should be here within a week.

That AIC remaster is a phenomenal pressing, my jaw hit the floor the first time I spun it. Nice review!
It really is. I'm glad I picked it up for sure.
I purchased my Rt85 about 3 months ago, installed an LED light strip in the back of the turntable pointing towards the acrylic platter and it looks great but the sound is why we are all here. It’s well worth the $499 price tag.
My Vinyl experience has skyrocketed since my purchase. Just the other day I was spinning
the RIO album by Duran Duran and I was in awe of the clarity & sounds that I never heard before, especially on the title track! If you’re torn between this & another TT, give the RT85 the nod as I did & sit back and enjoy!
Great Review!
Thanks for filling us in on that.
That Rio album you played. Was it an original pressing? Or the latest reissue? I have an original pressing and it’s lacking bass and mids and sounds muddy. I have the RT-85 as well btw
@@thomaslytle5519 Hi, I own the 1982 3rd Edition Jacksonville pressing, Capital label,

I'm hoping they might make another step up model that can include those options.
Keep us posted on the updated headshell.
Very helpful as we are deciding on our first turntable purchase. Very detailed and Now just need to consider a pre amp.
I'm glad to hear it.
I love my RT85. It has great looks, an awesome cartridge, and wonderful features and performance.
That seems to be the standard consensus.
Like that tune that was playing in the background😊
After rocking a Numark TT-1510 for 18 or so years (it was serviceable at best, but the price was right when I was in college), I upgraded to an RT 85 last month, and it's a night and day improvement. It sounds amazing and has completely changed how I listen to music. I love it.
I'd imagine that was a big improvement for sure. Well done.
I have ordered the RT 85 turntable. For speakers I have 2 QSC K12.2 powered speakers that i hope will hook up to this. I also ordered the Fluance Pre-amp. can't wait till i get it all hooked up
Sounds good, enjoy that.
Now I just need to figure out what album to play first 🤔
@@christophervehon9554 I look forward to hearing what you think about it.
Hey brother great review! I’ve had my RT-85 for about a year and a half now and I’ve had zero issues with mine and would definitely recommend it to anyone! My previous TT was the AT-LP120, and the Fluance was a huge upgrade in terms of sound and build quality. Cheers🤘
It's a very popular upgrade, I'm glad it's working out for you.
Another ringing endorsement, I too have the AT-LP120 but I know there is a lot in that table is holding back the vinyl's sound potential
I'm certain you'll enjoy it for years to come.
I bought the rt-85 three months ago and I am very, very happy with it..
It's a solid purchase.
Thank you very much for the kind words.
I've had my RT 84 for a couple of weeks and being new to the vinyl scene I am more than pleased with the unbelievable quality of sound I am listening to. I do get some issues with static so I'm guessing an upgrade to the acrylic platter will help with this.
It's certainly possible.
I think the Nagaoka sounds better.
I have a RT81 that I upgraded with the 2M blue. The cartridge is a good fit on my home theater with Marantz receiver and Elac Debut Reference bookshelf’s. It’s a great cartridge.
It's certainly popular for a reason I'd say.
Finally a review that mentions the feet! I do feel that that is my biggest qualm after having it a while. I find myself adjusting them a little too frequently to make sure the platter is level. And it’s on a steady, heavy surface so it seems a little silly to me. Fantastic otherwise.
You may take a look at Isoacoustics feet. They have several models and they're supposed to be top notch. I'm considering them myself.
Thx.
A simple cart change can go a long way, I'm glad you got it sorted and I appreciate you supporting the channel!
It's nice to hear someone say they're happy with what they have and not worrying about running out to get the latest and greatest thing. Good for you.
That Marantz is a very nice table.
For me, I use a tube-based Fosi Audio preamp. Being tube-based, I can swap-out the tubes to fine-tune the audio. I'm happy.
Ah the mythical 'last thing'. I've heard they exist, but I've yet to see one myself. Best of luck in your hunt.
Awesome review! Question: what are your thoughts on the new RT85N with the Nagaoka cartridge? You mentioned the Blue seems be a little treble heavy. Do you think the Nagaoka MP-110 will reduce this and maybe add some low tones?
I would recommend watching my review of that very table 🙂
Thanks for the review. I have owned the RT85 for about 3 months and I am very pleased. I agreed that something needs to be improved with the lift lever, it is my biggest peeve. This is probably not my last turntable I will probably upgrade in a year or so.
I am currently looking at upgrading my preamp...phono stage...i would love to see you review some of these in the sub $1000 region, ss and tube.
If I can get my hands on some more phono pre amps, I'll certainly make a video about it.
When using the auto stop, yes. I forgot to mention that.
Weird. Mine doesn’t do that
Got the RT85 in Jan 2021, amazing turntable for $499. It replaced a Dual CS741Q. I sold the RT85 and got the Mofi StudioDeck with the UltraTracker cartridge. Definitely was a gateway table for me.
That's usually how it starts. Well done.
@@thevinylattack Hopefully I'm done for awhile :)
It's a very solid player and affordable as well.
@@thevinylattack Thanks for reaching out. I appreciate you taking the time, and your input.
They're available on the Fluance website as of my writing this.
While the RT85 is a fine table for the money, if that Technics is in good shape it's three times the table the Fluance is. Just upgrade the cart.
@@thevinylattack Yeah, the Technics is in great shape. Just needs a new cart. I want the RT85 to replace my budget Audio Technica table in my office.
I would like to try the Ortofon Red on my Technics table, Just not sure if it is compatible with the Technics headshell on it currently. Any knowledge on this would be helpful. Some other cartridge suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
@@MartyDadRiffs That makes sense.
@@MartyDadRiffs Any standard cart will fit just fine on that headshell.
After a lot of reading I came to this short list.
$299
* Fluance RT-82
* Music Hall MMF 1.5
$475-$499
* Pro-Ject Debut Carbon EVO
* Audio-Technica AT-LP1240-USB
* Rega Planar 1
…but, I found a U-Turn Orbit with acrylic platter, Ortofon 2M Red, and cue arm that was meticulously cared for and very nicely priced.
I’m looking toward the Schitt Mani to pair with it.
Loved hearing your thoughts on the Fluance, it really looks nice, thanks for doing these vids!
Looks like a pretty solid list, I'm sure you'll be happy any way you go.
Did you ever buy a 2m Blue stylus to replace the 2m Red (can use the same cart with either stylus)? I have an Orbit Special but have not upgraded to a Blue stylus yet.
No, I didn’t even know you could do that.
@@CosmicKnight1 saves you a little...price for just the 2m Blue stylus is $204 currently, but at least you don't have to futz with realigning the cartridge, just an easy stylus replacement. Do be careful though to not damage it during the install.
Considering it! Thanks for a great review!
Glad it was helpful!
A little more adjustability would indeed be nice for this table, but I'm glad you got it set the way you like.
just purchased one , cnt wait to hear it
Hope you enjoy it.
@@thevinylattack me system consists of musical fidelity m5si intergrated amp with MM phono stage and pr of klipsch la scalas and now fluance rt85…..
Fluance RT 85 is going to be my next turntable I have the RT 81 and love it
A very solid choice.
Interesting, I wonder why it was giving you hum. Sounds like all's well that ends well though.
I'm looking to upgrade my turntable at some point and I am considering the rt85 and the pro-ject debut Carbon EVO. I'm leaning towards the rt85 a little bit more because of the 2m blue and the acrylic platter. I wish it had a better tonearm though.
As much as I like the 85, the EVO is the superior table in my opinion. It costs more, however.
Cheers man!
Glad it was helpful, I'm certainly looking forward to doing more in the future.
You might look at the Iotavx sa3.
Good review I think this will go well with my fluance fi70 and fluance preamp
Fantastic review! I’m currently using a AT-LP120BT-USB and it’s been great - I love the look of the bamboo and when the time comes to upgrade the RT85 would be a consideration - just wondering if it’s a big enough step up from my current turntable.
Unless you're running a pretty fancy cartridge on the AT, it's definitely a big step up.
@@thevinylattack nope running the stock cartridge….
I have the same turntable myself for several years... it's clear this RT85 would be a great upgrade for people like us. Although I have been experimenting with different cartridges (not necessarily the 2m Blue) so I wonder how this will be impacted.
I too had the same AT-LP120 USB turntable you have and wasnt quite
happy with it, although it is a great value.
On point review.
what would be good speakers to pair with the RT85 and the 2M blue to get the most out of my table and amp?
@@jeremyr722
In my listening room the turntable is about even height with the large speakers that I am using, but the speakers are out in front and away of the turntable.
No regrets.
I'm happy to hear it.
Hello! For this review you mention using 3 albums to test turntables-one of them being The Cure’s Mixed Up. Do you have this as a picture disc or regular vinyl? I already bought Katanga and I have AiC’s Facelift. Thanks!
It's a 180-gram black vinyl record. I'm not a fan of picture discs. I think they sound pretty rough.
I have this bad boy on its way rn and I cannot wait to throw on Bleed the Freak and then Love, Hate, Love. Will be my first turntable ever, and as nervous about setting it up as I am, I can't wait to hear Layne screaming bloody murder into my ears!
Let us all know how you like it.
I'll keep my Elac Benjamin Miracord 10H....but might also consider this in the future .
I'd be interested in hearing the difference between the two.
I'm strongly thinking about replacing my 20 year old Stanton ST-100. With my research, I keep coming back to the RT 85.
Good review and good info. Thank you
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you this review.. Still using my original Marantz 6300 and thinking of an upgrade…
Those older Marantz tables can really be fantastic depending on the condition. A new toy can certainly be fun, but it's not always necessary. Let us know what you decide.
The Vinyl Attack! Thank you your info… the unit is in mint condition still. Maybe an upgrade with the cartridge may be in order.. Again, Thanks.
@@davidbailey6350 I would definitely look at a new cart. It's a relatively affordable way to change up your sound without having to buy a whole new table.
Thank you again, appreciate it…
And I may just do that…
A fantastic review. I am not in the market for a table but this was a well presented, articulate, and informative review. I would love to see this continue on the channel and I think it is extremely helpful and educational for both new and veteran enthusiasts. Great video as always mate!
Thanks much bud. I'm really hoping to do more review work as I quite enjoy it.
I was considering it and went in end with pro-ject debut carbon evo for one reason only. Fluance is not available in Europe and with shipping and import taxes it would cost 1700€ while pro-ject carbon evo was 540€ and available for pickup in store right away with professional setup. Phono preamp, and speakers with turn table where still under 1000€
That would indeed be a compelling reason.
is this better then the ProJect Debut Carbon Evo ? I am ONLY considering this as I like the auto shut off as I am not usually at the ready to stop the playback on time....thanks for all your great vids
The EVO has a superior tonearm and operating mechanics. Is that worth another $100? I'm afraid that's up to you.
hello! thanks for the review.
I honestly don't know if the pucks will work with it or not. Do let me know what you find out.
Woah i just ordered RT85 walnut with the holiday promo of free PA10 phono preamp. After watching this review i am confused if i should have waited and got the bamboo version
Meh, it's just a color preference. I'm just spend on darker wood tones at the moment.
I have just purchased the RT85 Blue , I am still awaiting the unit. I will be pairing the RT85 with the Denon PMA-600NE your thoughts on adding a pre-amp, even though the 600NE has a built-in pre-amp?
I always recommend an outboard phono pre-amp.
Thank You!
I've heard good things about the Denon, but I haven't used it. They make good products, I just haven't had a chance to test any of their turntables.
Yes been hearing some negative things about the cover has to be removed and set to the side?
I am directly in line with the review given, having owned an RT85W for almost two years now. I have the walnut finish and think it is closer to a furniture grade than being a lesser veneer. That being said, I do wish that Fluance would stop calling the plinth "solid wood", when in fact it is veneer covered MDF. It is very nice, however, it is not solid wood. Also, I'm on the same page about the lack of a VTA . That would be a nice addition to what I feel is a very nice turntable. It checks a lot of the necessary boxes and is in a great place in regards to the point of diminished returns.
Perhaps they'll address those things in a future upgrade to the line.
I would just look at upgrading the cartridge for now. It'll make a world of difference.
Would you recommend this player, the Rt85N or The Pro-Ject debut carbon evo? Thanks!
They're both fine choices, but the Fluance is $100 cheaper if that helps.
Wonderful, articulate review Chris - thanks so much!
I’m wondering if in your opinion (or anyone else’s, for that matter) there is a significant jump in quality when you spend $1000 on a turntable as opposed to $500?….
Depending on the turntable, certainly.
There certainly is. Better isolation ,better tonearm and bearings, better motor, higher mass platter usually, better installed cartridge, nicer finish.............
I appreciate the feedback!
