  • I was recently confronted by an ex student about how he believed I had abandoned the original method of teaching Pekiti Tirsia Kali.

Beautifully explained Tuhon. I started training in Pekiti nearly 20 years ago with various instructors and was taught and teaching what I knew of the "older" methods (Doce Methodos) for many years. Every time I have trained with GT has been life changing and the first time I encountered his instruction with the Tri-V formula was mind blowing. When I last had the opportunity to train with him a few years ago, he specifically told me to tone DOWN the explosivity I had inherited from prior teachers and gave me several tips to enhance my efficiency. The difference is night and day. I guarantee it's not because GT is getting old (which I agree is disrespectful for people give that as a reason), but because his own knowledge, mastery, and level of efficiency have increased massively over the years. GT will still kill the sh*t out of really everyone I know. I don't care how "explosive" they think they are. This is why I've tried to stay as connected as possible to the SOURCE of PTK and I don't worry so much about what others are doing.

Thank you for sharing sir. It's refreshing to read this because I know for a fact that now days alot of people avoid training with GT.
Reading your comment is really refreshing and reassuring 🙏

Kayse fighting method meshes very well with Pekiti Tirsia Kali.

It's interesting that people don't see the insecurity of a person who always says "I'm the only one" and instead, decide to follow that person. I haven't been doing Pekiti for very long, but long enough to notice that something as basic as Abcedario is done differently by different tuhons, and that it isn't because they are doing it wrong.

People want certainty. Hearing "it depends" isn't as attractive as "this is what exactly you have to do!"
People flock towards those they feel have concrete answers. Even though in fighting the only real answer is it depends on the situation. So teachers will play this character very similar to a religious figure who is attracting a flock of followers by claiming to have the truth.
Thats why you see so many cults in the martial arts.
It's sad but I don't see it changing anytime soon.

I like learning the differences between how each Tuhon teaches techniques, drills, and principles. I think it's interesting how Tuhons McGrath, Waid, yourself, and GT himself teach the same things. Learning from multiple instructors and sources is always the best way to truly understand a subject.
There's also totally a place for historical martial arts practice and preservation -- martial arts, like every art, can lose their historical records and practices if no one bothers to record them. That said, everyone should respect each other's goals and choices here. Some people may want to practice and learn the history of PTK, while others may prefer to learn the newest version of the art as GT is currently teaching it; there's nothing wrong with either, but there is rudeness in disrespecting someone for their choice.
I learned PTK back when Tuhon Waid was still traveling around with GT. I really like Waid's style and methodology, but I also find it just as interesting to learn and re-learn this art from other perspectives.

When Leo dies, PTK will fall apart into different groups...
Personally i absolutely dont care about groups and words, i just train it... every day... thats it!

Tuhon, as individuals who will eventually modify, add, and move into our own way to interpret and use the content of any style we learn, it's inevitable that changes will occur and in many instances the style will evolve. There is nothing wrong with that and nothing will ever remain in it's original form. I totally enjoy, respect and learn so much from you as well as from multiple other instructors Keep doing what you are doing brother. There's a multitude of us who totally appreciate you and, thank you for sharing your knowledge with us. 😎

I don't know, worry about that, art that does not evolve over time does not develop. I have learned a lot from your videos, here from Cuba, greetings

You're absolutely right. And that evolution must continue otherwise it will lose it's relevance.

Agreed completely, trying to do just that. I wonder however as a tuhon do you have creative licence with respect to the foundational principles themselves? I hope so.

    • @lighthavenindia
      @lighthavenindia  6 місяців тому +2

I have creative licence with the expression of the principles. However the principles themselves are pretty universal.
Atleast when it comes to weapon based combat.
For empty hands and grappling i have more freedom to modify or add to existing principle to make them more functional.
