Great job!!! As a teacher myself, I really like the way that you organize and present concepts. You are probably one of the most informative FMA teachers on UA-cam!
This channel is SEVERELY UNDERRATED! The way you tell about CONCEPTS vs just techniques is phenomenal. I am a Kyokushin Karate practitioner, who got interested in Kali, this channel is a boon.
Great video, my instructor taught the same principles use of the angles as your way of attacking...try to avoid open hands so you don't break the hand within a fight. But he did teach me Muay Thai to help fight at a distance with the use of Kali principles/mindset...
Thank you 😊 I believe in using the right tool at the right time to solve the right problem. Muay Thai with Kali Principles can be very effective on the street.
Just train, spar, test, train some more. There's no secret. I spar multiple times a week. I train multiple times a day apart from teaching. It's a simple formula
Ideally you want a good group of people around you who will push you while staying safe. Or you do it in a way where you spend the year training and then once a year travel to a school with good training partners, spend some time there, train and spar. Like how you came for Beltons camp. Both work
One of the best videos on ptk empty hand technique. One question sir, in a video Doug Marcaida said about the guard that kali practitioner doesn't keep it high since it comes from bladed hand concept so it becomes easier to cut so they keep it a little down. Though I'm not an expert to comment on this. Just a doubt. Another thing sir, does the empty hand technique of PTK differs from other systems of Kali like illustrsimo or modern Arnis? By the way I requested for this video and you made it 😃 thanks a lot
I'm not actually familiar with the video of Doug Marcaida that you're referring to. I'd need to see it to understand exactly what context he's speaking in. My rule for most things is to come to a conclusion based on practicing and then testing a technique or principle in sparring. But that doesn't mean there aren't other ways to do it. This works for me. I hope my videos help you to think about how you can find what works for you. The beauty of Pekiti is that it's so fluid. Unfortunately I also have very very very limited experience with other FMA styles so it would be wrong for me to make any claims or judgements on those. I do have a pretty decent network of Filipino Martial Arts Friends from around the world. Hopefully once covid ends we can get them to India, ask them this question in person and make a video about it. Lastly please keep requesting. It helps us decide what to make :)
@@lighthavenindia thanks a ton sir. You never forget to reply. Your art of teaching is really great. You teach in a simple manner. You are like Richard Feynman of martial arts .
Nice video, as always! One question: In the FMA you often hear about "Panatukan" or "Dirty Boxing", that includes the basic jab and cross for longer distance. Is this even a thing in Pekiti Tirsia Kali? I let my students work on the basic boxing strikes, primary that they can delivere clean stricks for practice, but i also prefer the closer distance when i use PTK.
The Jab is a very important technique in ptk, boxing exists yes but i highly recommend avoiding boxing, use jab, slap, hack, ellbows. The risk to break your own hand trough boxing in combat can be very high if you fail to do it correctly, and the last thing you want is a broken weapon hand, fill the gap with jab, nr1 slap and or nr.2 hack, depends how close you are, then ellbow, ellbow followed by a takedown or go away.
Thank you. I haven't actually ever seen GrandTuhon throw a jab cross. I base my assumptions on Pekiti based on what GT has taught me/what I've seen GT doing. I've also heard him often talk about his views on striking. For longer range he prefers open hand strikes. So slaps or palm strikes. To be very honest I also practice and teach Muay Thai. It really gives me a different perspective on my Pekiti striking. It also gives me a place to test my theories. My ideal combination is for long range I use a Muay Thai flavoured PTK, at closer range I use a PTK flavoured Muay Thai and at grappling range i use a BJJ flavoured PTK. I practice all these arts but I keep Pekiti as my foundation.
What I've been told is Dumog means grabbing the Carabao by the horns and bringing him down. That's what GrandTuhon has told me. Butttt I don't speak the language so I may have misunderstood. Either way Dumog encompasses pretty much all aspects of Grappling including ground fighting. The ultimate goal is to get you to a position of non counterability where there are no avenues left for your opponent to launch a counter. Depending on the context and what you want to do you can choke, break, control, arrest etc.
