I learned about D'Anninzio when I was studying the actress Eleanora Duse ...she influenced many actresses in Europe and US....she loved that man and supported his work.
Fascinating! Lived in Italy many years ago and not aware of Italian history other than art history. However conversing with an old man at a Christmas party in Rome my eye was drawn to an eagle pin on his suit lapel. Young as I was I knew it was an ominous symbol.
D'Annunzio received a brief mention in history at school when we covered Mussolini and the rise of Fascism but that was all. A most interesting podcast.
Fantastic podcast. Really well researched, informative and entertaining. When they cover, what one might feel, are well known events they always have information and data that I had never heard before. They did a recent series on the Titanic and that was amazing
Super excited to hear the rests take on this polarizing character. I'm not a fan of the man, but I'll concede that he may have been a substantial artist.
39:00 Trieste was not occupied by the Austrians. Trieste was Austrian, since 1382. That is more than 500 years before d'Anunzio came and dropped leaflets from an airplane. The few Italien irredentists in the town were in the absolute insignificant minority. The majority of the Italians in Trieste were pro-Habsburg, pro-Austria, even during the war. And the non-Italian part of the city's population was even more.
And yet it was Italian for hundreds of years before that, not counting when it was part of the Roman empire a thousand years before Austria or more accurately, the Holy Roman Empire. Go figure.
After 7:20 ... D'Annunzio contribution to the fascism of Mussolini: - militarism - extreme nationalism - élitism - anti-democracy - manipulation of the press - theatricality, sense of politics as a performance art
Interesting that at a time when more people were enfranchised in Europe that they rushed to support these strong men type leaders and tge romantic notion of bloodshed and valour
Surprise, surprise....allies did not keep their word. The same happened with Poland after 2nd World War, with very serious and long lasting consequences for the Poles.
Moses is perhaps one of the first recorded fascists , enforcing his dogma at sword point , marking his male population , jewish marriages only and lets not forget they are Gods chosen people , a polite way of saying master race .
A poliglot version of Goebbels! So ... the *only* part of Fascism that stuck is advertisement and propaganda? Interesing - thank God we don't have Fascism anymore!

Same here. I was aware of his role in the occupation of Fiume.
Best podcast I've never heard of.

This is an outstanding episode. I’ve returned a few times. 👍

They should correct that
Yes it is forgottenhistory that the primary language spoken by the Imperial-Royal Austro- Hungarian Navy was Croation

Great episode! Andronikos Komnenos next please.
I would propose Charles Maurras, the leader and theorist of Action Francaise, as the first Fascist.
Could you please do something on Joseph Duveen. Much love from South Africa.
Cor blimey, Lucy Hallet has a sexy voice! Honor Blackman eat your heart out.
How does one pronounce "Gabriele D'Annunzio"
The " " is silent

Very interesting
Who was Gariboldi?-) Fumie is charming this time of the year.
Garibaldi, unified Italy in the 1860’s.
@@Vretenaes Did you know he was the only French commander that won the battle in the Franco-Prussic war?-)

And the Middle East as well.
I've read that d'Annunzio's state of Fiume was the first state to formally legalize homosexuality ?
Plausible--his right-hand man in Fiume, fellow Italian aviator Guido Keller, was bisexual.
Super Duper!!!
~ "the last fascist,,,"
Kipling was imperialist who supported genocide.

Correct
However, he didn’t exist as a human being. He was merely a mythological/literary character.
@@rdf098311 I cannot deny or confirm that , but what i do know is that all three of the monotheist incarnations of the Arab people are false

Oh yeah…exactly… ironic lol
Oh yes we do.
Smart women but women always look at history and politics through emotion.
Just a tip: stop playacting what today is anachronistic, a 19th century patriarch wannabe, and step into the 21st century.
