Those big gatherings of far flung communities remind me of the Mongolian and Saharan tribal get togethers for livestock trading and competitions and as a chance for young people to find a partner from another tribe. This would bind the tribes and be a incentive for peaceful co existence

Omg, you had me with Spinal Tap. I recognized it immediately. Greatly appreciated 👍I wonder if they'll ever know what & why Stonehenge was built for.

Another absorbing episode; but I am not sold on the use of the River Usk to transport anything from the Preseli range. Connecting these two points even now requires travel through well-wooded terrain which before sheep would have been even more dense, and crosses several watersheds, challenging the sled pullers with steep gradients.. The obvious route is down from the hill range and onto rafts at the earliest point possible [weight is easier to move on water than over land] -the Cleddau river system [there is evidence of a sled-way on the South slope of the Preselis leading in this direction]. Yes; this requires a lot of water navigation, but this is inshore travel and is assisted by incoming tides; shore-hopping up to a point opposite the Avon would have been far preferable for a people whom. Mike Pitts himself acknowledges were skilled enough to cross the English Channel, so their aim would presumably be to utilise water access at the earliest opportunity on the journey?

Why are they laughing so much and saying Stonehenge was futile? It’s beautiful and represents our culture. It’s wondrous.

The French mathematician Monge developed what are known in linear optimisation theory as "transport equations " to model the transport of soil etc in the building of cathedrals etc (this paper was in 1781) . One can derive energy expenditure levels for such projects and you can build models of how many people and how many calories are needed to perform a task with a given level of technology. The problem has always been that modern people I think systematically underestimate how a really efficient system once invented can be. After all, during WW2 the US could build a bomber in much less than a day and a Liberty ship in a couple of days. You only needed a dude like Archimedes to figure out the system and supervise it and you were off. Clearly these people existed as they do today and they have an enormous impact.

It seems that what I'm left with is that no one really knows a lot about the construction of Stonehenge. The revelations of MMP about the blue stones has been shot full of holes by those who have analysed the documentary the BBC put out and the claims about the 'exact' location/quarry in Wales have been seriously challenged. Not sure what Mike was getting at about people crossing the Channel with cows etc. Britain was populated long before 5000 years ago, even 15000 or more through Doggerland before the Channel had opened up and after the ice sheets had retreated. Popularist programmes on history and archaeology by TV networks are just looking for sensationalism and actually are damaging to their professions. The dismissal of the notion of erractics is alsorather casual, the melt water from the ice sheets must have been significant as it was in the American northwest. Just the thoughts of a fan of geology and archaeology, but need better evidence than speculation like much of this was. Love the podcasts by the way, guys.

From Archaeology channels I've seen the Blue Wales stones is viewed as an old theory likely incorrect.
