Throughout this series of podcasts, I have envisioned the people as Brian Blessed, Sian Philips, Patrick Stewart and George Baker. John Hurt, Christopher Biggins, and Derek Jacobi to come. Looking forward to them. Great work, Tom and Dominic.
I love your sincerity lads, no one could accuse you of a lack of sincerity in your tireless passion for saily or indeed the many other products you've championed over the years 😅!
I guess that Tiberius ordered the fisherman's torture as he thought that he was being made fun of by drawing attention to his mullet hairdo which was obligatory if he was to drive his Capri
One has to take into account the mullet might've laid in the neck like a flattened rat after his morning swim that had surely just taken place, instead of the wonderful fluffy guinea-pig that it otherwise must've been. A grave mistake from the fisherman indeed.
According to a Star Trek show writer/novelist, it was a family tradition and he used it as a mantra to think things through and not react before being ready.
@stuartwald2395 Thank you. But all that does is push the question back a few generations. Why does Captain Kirk's family have the name of one of the most notorious sex criminals in history...? Although in the podcast it says that this might be an exaggeration
@@robertwilson-lq1lr I am sure that there are lots of great people who were called Adolf... but the name has seen a drastic decrease in popularity... For mysterious reasons.
Stabilising the frontier after the Battle of the Teutoburg Forest is an extraordinary achievement, the only person who might be capable of smth like that is Caesar
Some things did happen during Tiberius's reign. I read somewhere that some guy in Judea was executed for rebellion(according to his enemies) by that province's prefect. Some say that he was one of the more famous contemporaries of Tiberius. And I heard that Tom is a big fan of him and I wonder how he did not get a mention is this episode.
HA! That's hilarious. Seems like I may have heard something to that effect, also. Perhaps, in the fullness of time, that event became one of the most consequential events in human history, or something like that....?
Hey Tom & Dom. Wait a mo, Dom! You went from pink-shirted Dom to blue-shirted Dom in an instant when you started talking about Saily! ~ Damn your eyes!
Fast forward through it, sponsors are most of the time around a minute long. If it means they can spend more time and effort on these episodes then I'm all for it!
unless you donate in some way please don't complain about sponsorship deals. shows like this take a lot of money and a lot of effort to produce, which you then get to enjoy for free. one sponsor announcement is not remotely comparable to UA-cam's absurd saturation ad-bombing.
Yes, they were Tiberias' great-nephews through his brother Drusus, and Drusus' son Germanicus (brother of Claudius). Reference to a family tree would add some clarity to this series.
One of the most underrated tragic figures. The Caesar who never wanted to be Caesar and is still one of the longest reigning during the imperial period. When you include the last 10 years of Augustus's life, where Tiberius was running day to day operations of the empire, he was master of the Roman world for over 30 year, and he sacrificed more than any of his other family to preserve the lie. He was one of the only individuals to defy his stepfather and not lose everything as a result, he was a very capable supreme commander of the legions. He just became so disillusioned over the years that I think he stopped giving any fuck whatsoever.
Nothing brings me more joy than listening to Tom Holland talking about Roman Emperors. However - humble note to the editor: not at all keen on the needless quick cut edits and random slow zoom-ins happening in this episode. Really takes away from engaging with the flow of the content x

I understand the reasoning of a lighter author to make Tiberius seem like a scoundrel but that doesn't mean that it's not necessarily true. Obviously there are not enough sources and since he was on capri with very few other people there's probably not enough witnesses. I think the only thing that you could maybe start a case against siberius with would be the changes that happened to Caligula are the changes we tare old happened to Caligula after being basically held captive on Capri.
this episode feels a bit rushed . - skimming over important events. you can just extend it into a two-parter like you used to....we really won't mind 😉
@@Jfavorite1483 John Tzimiskes is not underrated. he is very well regarded by people who know who he is. Tiberius is not, being seen as a deranged, murderous tyrant.
@@countdowntorevolution9986 Right, he adopted his great-nephew as his son and presumptive heir, even though they still played like it was business-as-usual in the Roman Republic.
No, Domitian is the most underrated emperor. If Tiberius had died around the same time as his son and heir Drusus in 23, he might be deserving of the spot, because up till then he was a fairly good emperor, if a bit on the sour humorless side. But he didn't die then. He reigned another decade and a half and during that time was responsible for some pretty unspeakably cruel things which canceled out a lot of the good he did during his early reign. Tiberius is an often poorly understood emperor. But he is not an underrated one.
So pregnant Livia returns to Rome with her husband and Tiberius to be forced to marry Augustus. So Augustus dumps his old wife and gets a new one, a virgin to him, thats already pregnant. Seems a difficult story to sell to the Roman public...
