Pere Marquette Railway N-1 Class 2-8-4 "Berkshire" #1225 was built by the Lima Locomotive Works in 1941, one of 39 locomotives of the wheel arrangement that the railway had purchased for mixed traffic use in the heartlands of Michigan. The engine managed to escape the torch and later became a static display engine on the Michigan State University campus. Eventually a group of students found interest in the locomotive, and began their own efforts to restore the engine to operational condition. The Lima Berk saw her first steam since retirement in 1975. Since then, the engine has became both a preservation icon, as well as a movie star, having been used as the basis for the 2004 CGI movie "The Polar Express". Today, she continues to see service as an excursion engine for the Steam Railroading Institute, based in Owosso, Michigan, pulling passengers on seasonal trips on the Grate Lakes Central Railroad.
This video expands on the original video from the Lerro Photography charter, "The Marquette Limited", as a "Part 2" of sorts. While the original video included many exciting scenes from the charter, I also had many clips that weren't included in the original that I did want to include in a future upload. Now, please enjoy this exciting video brought to you by Blue Comet Productions and Lerro Photography!
This video was filmed on January 12th and 13th, 2019.
I loved watching this video. No tasteless music, no obnoxious commentary, just the unfiltered sounds of a blowing train whistle, the chugging steam locomotive and the clanging of metal parts. Just the way it should be.

Beautiful piece of machinery indeed. Had a unique opportunity to drive 1225 this past October it was incredible!!
U technically just drove one of the most unnoticed, yet, most recognizable vehicles ever since the Back to the Future DeLorean. You know what I mean?
wow i wish a could drive a iron horse what a great experiance.
So lucky to be able to ride it!My dream is to be in the cab of the SP4449 Daylight,That’s be soooo cool!
It’s a magic carpet on a rail
Never takes a rest
Flying through the mountains and the snow
Ride for free and join the fun
If you just say yes!
'Cause that’s the way things happen
On the Polar Express
Woo woo the whislte blows
That's the sound of her singing
Ding Ding the bell will ring
Golly look at her go
You'll wonder if we get there soon
Anybody's guess
Cause that's the way things happen on
THE POLAR EXPRESS
When we get there we’ll say YEAH we arrive with a bang bang bang woo woo woo
.njn
Now the real question is
Can you Tokyo drift it on thin ice
yes but it wouldn't last very long ;P
̧B̨͠l̢̛ỳ̢t͘̕h͝e̶̴͡ I̧̛ţ́҉á͠͡ǹ̷ ̢̕W̶ind̢͠͡h́o͡҉w̨z̕e͘͜͡r͢ sorry you say it pal, but the train weighs over a Million Tons. The ice won’t hold it even in a second
Now this is where the power of plot armor comes and defends the 100+ ton steam train on thin ice
@@didosauce6008 Ice: *wants to break but fails*
Also ice: What the heck?
Polar Express: Plot armour, *MATE!*
😂😂😂😂😂😂
This is 1 of top 5 steam locomotives I so want to see in person some day
Same
What are the others?
@@Jamersonde
5. Wilmington and western 98
4 1225 obvious
3. Frisco 1522
2. Nickel plate road 587
And my favorite one .Canadian Pacific 1293
@@atsfevan0242 A good list. Of those, I've seen #4 and #2. And #2 belogs to my home railroad museum.
@@Jamersonde sounds great I really hope 587 will run again eventually since she hasn't run since 2002 and I was born 9 to 10 months before her removal from service same goes for 1522
The only thing to make this the official Polar Express is to get a whistle that actually sounds like the Polar Express in the movie.
The movie whistle is from the engine in back to the future 3. 1225s whistle is iconic. It shouldn't be changed.
The whistle from the movie is actually from the Seirra Railways Number 3 engine. Also known as the "Movie Queen" due to the number of films it is used in.
Not to mention at least 5 passenger cars, including an observation car, painted exactly like the cars in the movie.
I agree but it would be hard to find a 5 chime whistle and get Pere Marquettes attention
Actually the polar express was based modeled and sounded by this engine the writer of the polar express rode this train IRL and loved it
That is really the best looking train in the world, and will always be my personal favorite.
Great video. I would love to ride on that train. Pere Marquette Railway N-1 Class 2-8-4 "Berkshire" #1225 is a great Locomotive. I love The Polar Express as well.
Actually, you can. From November to December 21st you can ride the Polar Express. It starts in Owosso and goes to Ashley for a Christmas Festival and then back to Owosso.
It’s gotta be live action Polar Express time by now! 😆
Excellent photography 👍
I might be a British railwayman but American locos like this have always been a favourite!
My grandfather drove this train. Wow what a memory!
The items added to give it a 50s feel really work well. If this was B&W it could be easily mistaken for back then. It's amazing.
I never saw the movie, but you’ve done an amazing job filming. I’m from the state just south of you and mom was from Michigan. The locomotive and cars are paired so beautifully. Pere Marquette is amazing.
Your setup is so lovely with the landscapes, the locomotive chuffing away. Truly amazing and awe inspiring. Great job.
If you like trains, I have a feeling that you'll like the movie. The Polar Express was what got me back into trains. You see, when I was a kid, I had a TON of Thomas VHS tapes & DVDs, including the 2000 Magic Railroad movie.
I find it intriguing that at speed the chuffing makes it sound like a galloping horse
It's about a 2 and half hour drive to where 1225 is kept from my house. One of these years I'm gonna take a drive over there and see it in person.
Easily the best whistle of any locomotive ever
polar express in film : time travel steam locomotive train
polar express in real life : historic steam locomotive train that still used
What a beautiful locomotive! As a child the " Tweetsie" rail was in front of our home. In her youth, my grandmother would ride to and from work for 10 cents per day.
Its road number is quite fitting, 1225, December 25
Christmas!!!
That's why the locomotive inspired the creator of the film the Polar Express. The 12, as in December, and 25, also known as Christmas day.
@@ronanvave560 no, the writer of the book grew up with 1225 in the park and played on it and loved that engine so it was his inspiration of for the book, the number is just a VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY amazing coincidence
@@HoboJoe-tr1tm Yeah I know. What a coincidence.
@@ronanvave560 yeah I mean I thought that it was only because of the number too but that is an unbelievable coincidence
Idk which i like more, the old Chevy's or the Berkshire... Gonna have to go with both lol
She's downright GORGEOUS!!! ❤️❤️❤️
That sunset scene.... *perfection* .
Awesome video man! Good job
The whistle is just beautiful
My god the steam exhaust is beautiful
A magical train that leads to the North Pole called, The Polar Express.
Love the video, also shots of old Chevrolet truck. Good combination
My favorite shot was the one from 0:00 to 13:00!
Good stuff. It has been many years since we have seen similar action around Ontario.
This video was posted on my birthday!
Spectacular footage! 1225 seems to be an impressive thing to see in person. I recently heard that 1225 was having some boiler issues this past week. Any confirmation on that?
Louisiana Rail Productions I believe so. Know it didn’t run last weekend. Ran today though.
Yeah friend of mine shot it today.
Build by Lima on October 6th, 1941.
They need to make the pere marquette look more similar to the polar Express in the movie like they need to give it the whistle that makes the same sound as in the movie and they need to build the polar Express passenger cars from the movie
Actually when they made the movie they used all the sounds from this engine.
The movie also came out how many years ago?
@@swirlyfox2947 i think 9 or 10 years ago i don't know because i was born sometime after it was released
The train cars in the movie are in real life but I forgot the name
@@benjaminmenken5693 the grand canyon passengers cars
BEAUTIFUL shots my friend
I just love those carbon unit going up.
Amazing video man!!! The Polar Express is my favorite movie of all time! So cool to see the real thing!
0:56 sounds like the start of the song "The Polar Express"!
Excellent video, well done!
Nothing like the chugging clickety-clack and whistle blow of a steam engine!
Dang how do you pan shots or move the camera so smoothly
This is incredible. 😱😱
This is the best locomotive video I’ve ever seen! Love it! May I share this video on Facebook or Instagram with proper attribution?
someone should make a documentary about this engine
trains are so Big and beauiful, I love the raw power of a train .
Beautiful!
I Love I Love I Love that Steam Locomotive so Much! :-D
Beautiful
Pere Marquette 1225: EXPRESS COMING THROUGH!!!!!
Now this train is AWESOME!!! So this is how the Polar Express looks like in real life? Wonderful! And the 1950s era trucks just add to the atmosphere! Only thing is, the locomotive seems to be hard on pollution. Like, look at how much smoke is being released from its stack.
The amount of smoke it creates is nothing compared to the amount of cars that pollute our air everyday. It doesn’t even register as a concern.
Awesome video
Conductor: All aboard! (x2) Well, you coming?
Chris: Where?
Conductor: Why, to the North Pole, of course! This is The Polar Express!
Fun fact PM 1225 was used for the cuffing sound in the polar express
Great video. I wanted to get there to do some filming myself. Is it gone for the season? Can't wait to see more.
You should check out the Crossroads Village and Huckleberry Railroad in Flint, Michigan
WOW!
Excellent,but why so few passengers...?
Imagine if it was pulling freight for that chart. People would’ve quickly been making a ton of black and white photos out of it to make their photoshops look more vintage as if it were from the 1940s
I think the movie was giving hints on how to make a real polar express.
It was
Waw pere Marquette in the polar express
Wundervoll 👍👍👍👍👍
Cool
If only it was snowing..
This is probably a dumb question, but does anyone know why and what makes the Nathan 6 chime on 1225 sound so unique? Why is it high pitched?
27 tree huggers disliked this video, but I DON'T CARE! AWESOME WORK MAN! KEEP IT UP!
1225 simple. 12 stands for Dec and 25 stands for the day of Christmas
Actually the 12 represents it is a member of the 1200 series of Class N 2-8-4 Berkshires on the Pere Marquette, while 25 represents its individual number in the class.
Why does the exhaust sound off beat?
Rukkkis the way the steam cylinders are built creates the small then big thump it’s pretty unique I think it’s sounds cooler like that
I am a Ex steam mechanic. Notice the steam exhaust notes, this is not correct. There is an imbalance to the exhaust notes. Love the Video, great Quality!

Made me sub.
Are those the Capitol Limited's cars?
Where is this. I must ride!
Can it drift on an ice lake then
Anybody out there know how many ex-GTW / UP cars SRI has in their livery?
It’s a train that was in Polar Express
Yesss
Man, she is leaky! She needs a good once-over in the shop!
