  • Shrikes are part of the "perching bird" order. They are well known for how they handle their prey - an attribute that has garnered them a second common name: the butcher bird. Shrikes have raptor-like bills and hunt their prey which they may then store for later on plant thorns and even barbed wire fences. Shrikes have a shriek-like call according to some people and this is believe to be where the name "shrike" originated. These birds with fiercely defend a nest from intruders and may have multiple clutches of eggs in a single year if the timing works out.

We had been noticing a lot of dead animals hanging on the shrubs of a tree near our house - Lizards, frogs, snakes etc all left to rot on the shrubs, foul smell emanating from the tree. We later realised, the long tail shrike was creating it's secret pantry in that tree. Strangely, the shrike would never return back to eat the stuff.

Interesting that they are in Africa, but lacking in Madagascar! That nest footage at 0:55 was insane! They are so clever with their food hoarding, I feel like if Maui was a bird he would be a shrike based on this behaviour 😅

    🙄😁👍 quite interesting 🧐
I know a pied shrike for about three years now and he who I refer to as Spots 😬😜😂🙌 does sing/mimic songs of other bird species 😱😂yes; you got me right, he does sing and mimic tunes that I frequently whistle when we see each other in our daily goings on 😁👌
It appears to me that he does migrate 🧐
Other than that 😎 by monitoring Spot's hunting tactics and strategies 🧐👁️ I personally see shrikes to be more akin to raptors 👁️ such as falcons 😊 with the cunning of ravens 😁💪
What an awesome bird 👁️ like ALL other featherbed friends 😁
    Good show 😎🙌👌👍💪
