The Tufted Titmouse | Full Overview

- The real-life Disney bird, as if a drawing but here in real life. Bearing all the key elements required, a dainty bird, with big cute eyes, a charming crest, and pretty coloration.
Tufted, refers to the crest on their head and titmouse comes from the old English words, “tit” and “mase”. Meaning a small bird. Mase became obsolete and replaced with ‘mouse’ a familiar word that described their quick movements, much like a small rodent.
The Tufted Titmouse measures 5 and a half to 6 and a half inches and weighs roughly 6-9 ounces. They have large heads, thick necks, and are full-bodied. Their back has a pretty silvery gray color and their belly is white. Some individuals have a vibrant peach or rust color on the flanks. Giving them a snub nose look is a noticeable black patch just above the bill. When it comes to males and females, their plumage is the same so it is hard to distinguish between the two. The only slight difference is their size with males being just a little bit larger.
Belonging to the Paridae family the Tufted titmouse is a regular feeder visitor, for people in the Eastern United States.

🟢54 Days on the Inside of a Black-capped Chickadee Nestbox🟢
👉ua-cam.com/video/CgO_zDGgTjA5/v-deo.html4
I've been blown away by how large their vocabulary is. A lot of cool songs; some quite melodic. There's one who has trained me to throw peanuts in the air and is insanely good at catching them.
Yeah, I can concur. I thought Tufted Titmice just made the nasal Chickadee-like call. I was also surprised that they had a vast repertoire of calls and songs. I have mistaken at least several of their songs as being sourced from Carolina Wrens. LOL
I thought I was the only one. One trained me to feed him by hand, not the other way around. His mate wouldn't come very close, so I would leave some nearby for her.
We have tons of them here in Atlanta. I was playing this video on the porch and a Titmouse came to see what was going on. :-) Excellent video!
Too cute! :) Thanks for the nice comment
Same here in NW Georgia! I actually came here to say, when I play their call on my patio via UA-cam, they will gather around in the trees!
I have a bunch of them in my yard too. The chickadees aren't as brave but the Titmouse that comes to my feeder will let me watch it cracking seeds through my kitchen window.
Here too in JAX,FL.Heard one yesterday!
I love these guys. We see them fairly often here in Syracuse, NY.
I read that when a group of small birds bands together to chase off a predator, the tufted titmouse often leads the way.
I have often seen this!
The tufted titmouse is also my favorite bird. The clarity of its voice, and it’s fearlessness when snatching a peanut from our feeder while a squirrel is sitting in the tray dining, makes me smile. Thanks for this video on these cute little guys!🥰
They are indeed fearless!!!
No wonder birds love you. It's your easy going nature and calm voice, Lesley.
Too kind, Cindy. Thank you :) My mom has said from the beginning that she thinks my calm nature is why the birds are comfortable around me! Love the birds
We love these little guys. We have a lot of them in our yard. We call them the hillbilly housewife of the bird world because they yell at us if we are late putting out the seeds. You can almost see them wielding the frying on when they are scolding us. Love them!!
I have one watching me hand feed the Chickadees. It seems to be building up the courage to fly to my hand.
Our local winter chickadees always are accompanied by at least 2 tufted titmouse, they seem to be good friends! We love seeing them!❤️
Our titmice run with the chickadees, They are always at the feeder together. I fill my feeders up while it's still dark and they sit near and sing for me. They and chickadee's were the reason I started feeding birds 30 years ago.
I love whistling back and forth to these little cuties! They're so charming
I used to get lots of "tufties" at my feeders when I lived in Massachusetts. Now that I'm in Maine I don't see as many, but there have been a few around this spring. You gotta love those big eyes and that cute tuft.
They pretty much live at my feeders all year round in West Virginia
I love that nickname, "tufties!" I might have to use that one!
They’re great little birds and seem to be doing well in my area. It’s entertaining to watch these little guys carry a 2 inch unshelled peanut into a headwind.Evan after a few failed attempts and drops they prevail as they’re a very determined bird. 👍😃✌️
@S. G. they love the peanuts for sure! 👍😃✌️
They usually take the largest piece which is peanuts at my place in east central Arkansas
Hi, I am in middle TN and feed while birds. The Titmouse is one that visits my feeders daily. Along with chickadees and an occasional sighting of the woodpecker who will come down for peanuts at times ( whom I can hear pecking on part of the home I live in ). I get so much joy watching and listening to all the birds here.
Haha! Too cute about the woodpecker, they are little rascals, too. I'm glad that the birds bring you so much joy. :)

I love the tuffed titmouse 🥰😍
Great video ad usual 👏! Very informative . I was wondering , what is the best time to set up nest boxes ? Much of the surrounding woodlands save my meager few acres have been clear cut in recent years . I have many tufted titmice and chickadees visiting my feeders and after watching this and other videos I worry about if their breeding this year will be negatively impacted by the lack of nesting sites. I wanted to do something positive before now but my budget until now couldn't handle much extra spending . Any ideas to help provide for nesting sites ?
@@highlandtenerec6447 Ouch, clear cutting is such a shortsighted environmental nightmare, >_< Some people are selfish and evil hope you can help our feathered friends get enough insect larvae to raise their babies....
@@Dragrath1 I wholeheartedly agree . I see it more and more . I don't know of any good solutions to the problem. The land owner isn't usually conscious of the environmental consequences and the timber agent / lumber company are looking for ways to sustain their livelihoods. Very rarely does anyone think of what becomes of the wildlife. If they do those concerns become overshadowed by profits . At the moment I've had three neighbors harvest their wooded land and I'm living on a meager few acres of mostly hardwoods like an island in a sea of brush and stumps . I've allowed as much of my property as is prudent to return to the wild offering what habitat is possible. The brush does offer much cover for rabbits and certain birds. The open land gives the hawks hunting opportunities. Yet the number of woodpeckers is dwindling . Wild turkeys are becoming scarce . Quail are extremely rare . I could go on .
I have them here. I'll never forget one that came up when I was whistling his song back to him. He didn't get close enough for me to hold him, but he was determined to find the "other bird" in his territory.
Too adorable. I love it when birds come to investigate. 😄🐦
Oh Leslie, “ …, might have enjoyed this..” Enjoyed the show the entire way! Well done! Tit Mice are common here and a regular visitor to water and feed. I cherish them and yes, indeed, they are adorable characters and sing so pretty and proud. Have struck into a window before, been knocked silly but none killed…have bee honored to gather them up while loopy and talk to them and warm them close to my heart as they revive ( or not die alone) and it is easy to tell when they are ready to go again! Budgie Cherokee is terminally ill, yet she had two very good days and three good nights and is actually playing between naps today…took her for a ride and we ran errands together and she was so happy! ✌️
Aww, Greg, I'm sorry to hear of your sweet little Cherokee. You are so kind to the little one bringing her for a ride, and I love that she plays in between her naps. Cherish every moment and know that you have given her so much just by being there. Much love to you both.
Thank you for the sweet comment, too. I'm really happy that you enjoyed the video and how nice that you get them in your area. You're so kind to take the time to help the ones that hit your window. Thank you
These tiny bursts of energy are such sweethearts !. Their eyes are so wide. They don't miss anything. I love to watch them flying off with a lerge peanut in the shell. Thanks, Leslie for this. How sweet.
Whatever is wrong with his( Greg's) Budgie, I pray comfort and peace on both. God enfold you all. My cat is ill and I get it.☔
@@donnajohnson3334 Thank you Donna for your kind words and spiritual blessing, your prayer is comforting. Budgie Cherokee passed away last night cradled in my hand sleeping upon my chest. Her struggle is over, and is laid to rest in a beautiful gravesite here near her home. God is good and His mercy endures forever. I will pray you and your cat are ever in God’s compassion!
Tufties are such adorable birds indeed full of personality too having been regular feeder visiters for years particularly in the context of mixed winter flocks. One of the most magical things I have ever seen was watching a nest of tuffty fledgelings fledge thanks to serendipitous timing some years ago.
Really, really appreciate the tremendous amount of work you must gather in order to introduce us to each bird. Thank you MUCHLY!👍👍
Hey! Thank you so much. It's a lot of work but I truly love making these videos and even more so, I enjoy seeing others getting some enjoyment from them :)
Yes, she's a lovely lady with a perfect voice for narration.
@@LesleytheBirdNerd thank you 😊
Agreed! I have learned so much from your videos, thank you!
We have daily visitors of Tufted Titmice to our feeding deck here in southwest Ohio. They're one of our favorite birds to watch! They never stay at eat but will grab a morcel of food and take it to a nearby tree to eat. Then it'll come back for more. I guess they're shy eaters!
They are so sweet. You're lucky ri have those little rascals 🐦🥰
Hi Lesley! I used to see these cute little birds when I lived in California. They were quite friendly and I called them "cartoon birds." Thanks for another great video. 💚
California has the similar Oak Titmouse, not the Tufted Titmouse.
Wonderful video on the tufted titmouse Lesley! Thanks for sharing with us!💖👍😎JP
One of my favorites...they'll readily take an unsalted peanut-in-the-shell, bigger than their head, competing with the giant Blue Jay who wants those even more...
yes I'm amazed how their tiny beaks can pick up a big peanut.
They are usually regulars at our feeders. Hopefully they, and the other regulars, will be back when these huge flocks of Goldfinches leave. Have never seen anything like it. 😳
Omgosh, us too! We have a huge flock of gold finches this year!
These guys always know the second I put down peanuts at the feeders. I dont even have time to walk back inside before they swoop down for em
I found that when I moved the platform and hopper feeder away from the cylinder feeder that the smaller birds came back to feed. We have had a flock of Blue Jays ever since we bought a platform feeder and began feeding a mixture that has a lot of nuts in it. The nuts were meant for the woodpeckers that also enjoy the woodpecker suet. Instead we got a huge flock of Jays. We do have woodpeckers but they will not even come near the suet while they Jays are around.
Even though we have the cylinder type feeder for smaller birds they do not want to be around the Jays either. Once the smaller feeders were farther away from the platform and hopper feeders, which the Jays have taken over, some smaller birds came back.
We actually got the platform feeder to attract the Cardinals that had also disappeared even though they used to dominate the area. It seems that they do not like the Jays and Grackles either.
Having such a dry summer has brought the black bears down the mountain earlier than usual so the heavier feeders are put away until the bears are definitely in hibernation. We leave the smaller feeders up because I can carry them in at night to help protect them from bear destruction.
We are going to have to do some planning to decide how we are going to change things up long term. The Jays are really a bother. They eat all the nuts and then sit out there and scream on and on when the nuts are all gone. 🙄
One of my favorite visitors.
Here all year round mid-Michigan. Cute as can be. They love the nuts & sunflower seeds.
I actually have a rose gold cardinal hanging around, with PLENTY of other birds
Its my favorite little bird! It is so nostalgic for me to hear it since it reminds me of my time as a child at my grandmothers house in Carolina
Thank you for suggesting The American Bird Conservancy as a valuable organization to donate to in order to support our bird population. I always appreciate UA-camrs who do the background vetting so I know where my money is best spent.
Well done Ma'am as always! They always fuss at me when I'm filling the feeder and replacing their suet!!! LOL I always say....give me a dang minute and I'll be done!! LOL
Hahaha, that sounds like how it is for me with the Chickadees when I replace their food. They have no patience at all, lol
These little birds are one of the cutest around our feeder and the ones around our house will respond to whistle calls similar to theirs and come in to check it out, then will often hang around for a while after. They’re a real treat to have around.
Amazing collection of photos and videos from various bird lovers! I really enjoy seeing them from various locations with seemingly slightly different personalities. Thank you so much for making this video!

Never see em in my backyard in Houston, but drive an hour to the sides of the city and you'll find em. Fun to watch!
They are the only little bird that grabs peanuts from my yard. They are my very favorite. Thank you for your content ❤
Yes them and our big mouth Blue Jays 🙂
I see them visiting my tail-prop suet feeder (my newest feeder) along with little Downy Woodpeckers. I bet one reason is the mentioned tendency to re-use old woodpecker nest holes! Didn't know they are related to my other most liked species, the Chickadee!
This is my one of my favorite birds you would love them! super cute with lots of personality!
I can see their personality so clearly in videos, I would be fully into getting to know those birds. Awesome, and you are so lucky to have them

Love these guys! We have the oak titmouse here in the West, and just as adorable. They can approach humans, too. Thanks for this wonderful video.
These sweet little guys are what I have the most of at my house next to the woods in WV . They are also the most brave lol they love coming up on my porch stealing the cat food (I put out for the strays). They do the same on my porch in N. Georgia! When I brush my cats, I send it to the bushes for the birds.
So adorable. I hear them where I live.❤
With a cute bird like this, no wonder Homer Simpson can't say it's name without giggling like a schoolgirl
I’m blessed to have the Tufted Titmouse year round in my area. My husband 3D printed me a window bird feeder and a pair visits it daily. Makes me (and our cats) very happy.
This is my number one favorite backyard friend.
We have one of our bird boxes that is home now for the last 3 years by Titmouse, we love listening to them and watching them day after day
Endearing is the perfect word to describe this wonderful, cheeky species. I love seeing them at my feeder!
I live in Pennsylvania and nickname them Ghost birds.
They are the first birds out in the morning.
Often on the ground below feeders before morning light. 🐦
I wish so much I had little tufted titmice, they are the cutest birds ever! Great Video Lesley!
I love those little birds and they are quite vocal. ❤❤
Great video Lesley! These are one of my favorite birds, I am fortunate enough to see them at my feeders all the time 😀
These little guys have been here year round, their chirps wake me up every morning. Great video, thank you.
Aww how sweet hearing them in the morning. :)
Thank you as always - it's an attractive little bird. The European crested tit is of a similar appearance but with darker and sharper coloration. In the UK it's mostly restricted to some of the remaining old pine forests in the Scottish Highlands. Therefore not at all common.
I really want to do a video on the birds in the UK.
@@LesleytheBirdNerd That would be a great idea. There are many bird lovers here and feeding garden birds is really popular. There is a national garden birdwatch at the end of January and we have some great bird organisations including Royal Society for Protection of Birds, a charity with millions of members and British Trust for Ornithology who are professionals. There seem to be some good British birding channels on You Tube. I'm sure it would be interesting for your Canadian and US audience to learn about some of our distinctive birds, perhaps the "cousins" of your favourites - sadly we have no cardinals or bluebirds but we do have nuthatches, several familiar titmice, gold- and firecrests, wrens, robins and European jays among others, however. If I could help at all I'd be delighted but I'm afraid I'm not a photographer. Good luck if you do go ahead.
I love these little guys! I have lots of them in Western North Carolina. Once they start visiting your feeder, they become quite fond of peeking in your windows to see what you're up to
Treasure of treasures Leslie!!! I think my resident titmice love to play a game of seeing HOW FAST they can swoop in and grab a sunflower kernel from my feeder. They are ALWAYS hanging out with chickadees and my canary goes absolutely APESHIT when he hears the peep peep call of the males it’s like they’re taunting him 😂🌎
Hahaha too cute about your Canary going silly when hearing the tufted titmouse 😄🐦 thanks for the nice comment 🥰
I have these beauties at my feeder almost daily. They do have a "call or sound" that is a lot like the Chickadees who are at my feeders every day, usually twice a day. Beautiful little birds. I'm in Texas and I am very thankful we have such a variety of birds. I also have a pair of red bellied woodpeckers, and two pair of blue jays, a pair of white brested nuthatch, many Cardinals along with many Chickadees! Loved the video! Thanks Lesley! 🐦
My titmice love, and I mean LOVE shelled peanuts. They take one from the feeder, fly to a nearby branch, then hammer away until they're done and ready for the next!
And the name is perfect, just a "small bird". Yeah, the word "titmouse" might get a few giggles from a few people, but I love that you broke the word titmouse into its Old English roots. Nomenclature is a fascinating study in itself! Thanks for the video Leslie!
I agree, the history behind where names come from is interesting.
Too cute about your Titmice loving the peanuts, what sweeties.
I hear this bird a lot in my neighborhood, they have that sweet song they sing.
It really is a sweet song 🐦🥰
I love Tufted Titmouse. They are daily guests at my feeders.
What a coincidence that you would release this video today! I saw one of these for the first time this afternoon! I just put some seed out on my porch for the juncos and within a few minutes one showed up. I couldn't believe it! Happy birding from central Wisconsin!

Cool birds- I don't recall seeing any in this area, but knowing what they sound like will be helpful- keeping my ears peeled. Their alarm call is like a cross between a chickadee and nuthatch. :^) Also, could Feisty Jay be considered a Tufted Blue Jay? Seeing some similarities there... ;^)

They are adorable cute birds. I've been blessed to see them in my feeder outside my window.
I'm blessed to have many here in my yard. They are absolutely adorable to watch and so funny! This past winter I had a few to stick around but I didn't see them daily.
That is awesome!
We have them and they are very friendly. They're the first birds to come land on your feet begging for food when we're outside. If you're not outside they come land in front of windows and state at you until you acknowledge them, then they're expecting you to bring seed outside.
Such a cute and awesome bird! Here in Pennsylvania I see them in a patch of woodland. I put on their calls and they boldly call back and try to find me. Small but very bold indeed.
I live in Virginia Beach Virginia and for years Chicadees, Cardinals and Blue Jay's have been the majority of who we see. Recently in the past two years we are seeing Juncos when the weather flips and Titmouse, Bluebirds, and Finches have been showing up. It might be development taking down more trees than I would like to see but I am glad to have these guys hanging out. The Woodpecker is occasional but because we are seeing lots of these little guys has brought Kestrals into the area. The Red Tailed Hawks, Eagles and Ospreys rarely attach these birds but the Kestrals go for them a lot. That has prompted the past 5 generations of Cardinals to nest in my overgrownrose bushes (that I won't trim if they are nesting there).
Great posts Leslie. Always bring a smile when I see you post on here.
So adorable ☺️
These little cuties are my favorite backyard birds. I love their calls and their mannerisms!
I love the peach blush near their wings.❤
Love Tufted Titmice!! I watch them everyday, and love seeing them grab peanuts in the shell that look as big as they are! Thanks for sharing this sweet video!😊❤️😬
Ty for another great, fun, delightful video! I have titmice at the peanut feeders in the winter here in Wisconsin. Always great to see them!
Wonderful video as always. I have several Titmice that come to my feeders, they like the sunflower seeds but seem to always grab the peanuts (out of the shell) first. I could watch them for hours :)
Thank you so much. They seem like great birds to watch, I'd be watching hours for sure :)
I love their little sweet eyes and animated movement☺️ their call always sounds like they’re laughing at something very funny which makes me smile
In the woods I've had more meaningful encounters with the Tufted Titmouse than any other bird. They are very curious and often come close.
I just saw one of these today for the first time. I thought it was a nuthatch at first, but the posture and behavior was all wrong. Very cute little bird.
I learned a lot more about a bird that's a regular visitor in all four seasons to my region, New England. I always hear them before I see them, titmice have a very distinctive call. With their crests, they look like miniature versions of the bluejay and cardinal, but of course have their own coloring and behavior. Titmice are so fun to watch! Thanks for another great video Lesley ✌️💙🐦
They sure seem like wonderful birds. I have to see one someday. Glad you enjoyed the video. :)
This was a very fascinating video, especially since I never had the pleasure of seeing a Tufted Titmouse. I always hear their "peter peter" song, and I was under the impression that these birds were very elusive. I will definitely try to look for them perched in high tree branches, as you suggested in the video. They've always looked like little gray cardinals to me :-) I would love to have them at my feeder and have not given up hope; it took the White-breasted Nuthatches two years before they showed their sweet faces at my bird feeder. Also, the derivation of the word "titmouse" from "mace" was very interesting! I've always wondered about the name "titmouse". Thank you for another great video, Lesley!
Thank you again Lesley. With my low vision, I can't follow these small birds outside, but with your great camera work, I get to see them much better, on my smartphone.
Wonderful. So glad these videos help you see the birds that you enjoy better :)
I've never seen these birds, they are absolutely beautiful and I love your voice. Thanks.
🙂🐦 thank you
So glad I could help, and be a part of this video! Thanks Lesley!
I'm so happy to see this video on the Tufted Titmouse. For me, this bird has been one of the most influential birds that has peaked my interest in bird watching.
Perhaps one of the most wonderful things about this bird is that in fall, winter and very early spring, local Titmouses tend to make their presence more known in residential neighborhoods in the NYC area, that have enough trees around for them to shelter. I was beyond thrilled last fall of 2022 when I noticed that familiar call echoing through my neighborhood in Jackson Heights, Queens.
Other than White-throated Sparrows, Black-eyed Juncos and the occasional, passing Vireo, Titmouses are one of the more interesting and less common birds found in residential neighborhoods in NYC. Obviously, tons of Robins, Starlings, Blue Jays, House Sparrows, Cardinals and Crows can be found just about everyday in my neighborhood, not to mention Monk Parakeets.
I love the Tufted Titmouse! They are so adorable! I see some footage in there from @Luna's Window! So great to see two channels I watch working together.
they come up to me when i'm out on the back deck sometimes and i love them so much they're so sweet and curious. they'll stand and stare for a little bit, move, do more staring, and then finally go down to where the feeders are. currently they are my favorite bird by far
I love these little guys. They're always hanging out around my feeders with the chickdees and nuthatches.
6:23 Love you mesmerizing, silky soft, yet rational descriptions.
My family and I absolutely adore these little guys and the "weep-weep-weep" they make when we fill our feeders. They are bold! So bold they don't mind knocking at the window to tell us the feeders are low.
Yes yes I too had one come up to the door and peck on the window, then fly over to the feeding !
@@TheCybertiger9 smart little buggers!

I recently started putting bird feeders out in the yard and we get a lot of these little birds stopping by. At first I kind of disregarded them because there plumage didn’t stand out at first glance and they were so abundant. Fast forward to now, they’re one of my favorite birds we get. They have such big personalities, and between them and the chickadees, my yard gets some funny interactions!
I have said that these lil' guys are my Favorite, but then I see a Nuthatch and say OHHH those are my Favorite, or a Bluejays or Cardinal, or a Swallow.....I love them all❣️ I have grown very loving to the Blackbirds after I saw a video of yours and Family oriented they are, too precious❣️ My husband does not care for all the Blackberrys he shares with them over the summer from his bush, but I remind him there is plenty and he couldn't eat them all anyway😅 Thank you again for an Amazing video❣️ I feed the birds daily here in KY....see the Titmouse everyday, truly Blessed ❣️
I hear you. They are all so darn awesome that it's impossible to save one is a favorite over another. Too cute about your husband not being too happy about the birds eating his black berries 😄🐦 thanks for your kind comment. I'm so glad that you enjoyed the videos. Have a wonderful week ahead 🥰
I've seen countless bird behavior, feeding and watching videos and yours are, by FAR, the best! Thanks!
Hi Lesley. These perky, little birds along with the chickadees were absent from southeastern Pennsylvania in 2018, because of the extreme wet weather that summer. Researchers believed that they were afflicted with West Nile virus. It’s been a few years now, and it seems that they are starting to appear in this area once again. I was very excited to see the first titmouse last year, since then, there are several more now. I hate to correct you, since I consider you an expert, but these tiny birds don’t weigh 6-9 ounces. They only weigh .6-.9 ounces. That is 6-9 tenth of an ounce, or 17-26 grams. I actually held one once, it was like holding nothing.
That's cause they were all at my house in southwestern Pa.
Oh my gosh, that was a big mistake, we missed that and have no idea how. Oh my good lord! Thank you for pointing that out, I will put a note on the video.
@@robertganther3695 they have gray wings right
They are precious little creations....I just love birds...they seem to have individual characters....so sweet....
Thank you for such an enjoyable video! Loved it! The titmouse and chickadees are my favorite birds! They visit my feeders year round here in Virgina. I always have peanuts and black oil sunflower seeds for them and they come everyday 😊
Titmice are my favorite little clowns. They swing back and forth on our wind chimes and tap on the windows and look inside. They will go from window sill to window sill doing that. At the bird bath, they take turns bathing, while one of them stands watch from a branch above.
