  • The winds have been quite strong recently and debris has washed up along Chesil beach, great for beachcombing but not for spearfishing . The visibility is too bad at Chesil Cove so I dive at Church Ope Cove instead. I catch golden grey mullet, grey mullet and a pollock.

Hi Ryan . Videos are great. Informative and educational including the problems with discarded rubbish and fishing gear. I live approx 6 miles from where the plastic teignmouth tray comes from in south devon.!. thinking of coming up to your neck of the woods sometime on a neap tide probably . Question I have is what is the window for slack water on both chesil and hope cove . Many thanks if you can help Pete

Thanks Pete, I started making the videos for my friends and family but turns out quite a few other people are interested! I lived in Exeter for 3 years so I've done quite a bit of spearfishing down in Devon.
I've got some tips for you (if you want them). I don't know what experience or kit you have but carbon fins make a load of difference to swimming ability.
At these locations slack water only really matters if you want to spearfish a long way out from the shore.
      • Chesil Cove is a pretty safe spot at any time of the tide, there are loads of rocks and kelp in the corner and lots of fish can be found there, often big shoals of mullet.
      • Church Ope Cove can have more currents running but that's only really a problem if you want to dive further out from the shore and deeper. Most fish can be caught in close so there's no need to dive miles out and deep.
I reckon I've found more fish when I dive either side of high/low water. If I dive for 4 Hrs then I'd get in the water 2 Hrs before high/low water. I think the fish may move in as the tide changes.
At this time of the year though the winds and generally rubbish weather can ruin the visibility. If there has been strong winds from W to SW then Church Ope Cove may be your best bet but Chesil Cove can be a really enjoyable dive area.

@@ryane8881 Thanks Ryan for reply. Scuba dived for close to 20 years mostly in Devon and occasionally Cornwall. Never Dorset though Gave up about 10 years ago in pursuit of motorbikes and have only just recently got back in the water without all the tanks etc etc and absolutely love it (50 years old now and wish I'd done it earlier). I know bass are not allowed on the menu at the moment but I've seen more bass in the 20 - 30 spearfishing trips I've done in the last 2 summers than I ever saw when scuba diving along with other fish keep up the good work Pete

I'm 25 now and I scuba dive but fish can see and hear you when you're scuba diving and I don't think they like the bubbles, probably looks unnatural and so they don't come in as close. I've seen loads of small school bass but I guess it makes it interesting looking for other species. Hopefully the ban won't be in place for too many more years!

@@ryane8881 we like the look of the free diving and have purchased a couple of spear guns, got to do it once so far in North Wales but the day we went the viability was very poor, and was grateful that the fish take away were open lol, and then the unmentionable so a lot of thing's in the air, but we also have fishing kayaks there great fun also 👌👌

Another good video - Do you fish alone and what average depth do you go?

    • @ryane8881

Cheers, I normally shore dive between 6-12 meters I probably find most of my fish at about 8.5 meters and most of my dives are about 2 minutes at the moment.
Finding someone with the same time availability/interest/spearfishing kit can be tricky. I do go with friends and a cousin when I can. I go to the coast with scuba divers so while they are off diving I go spearfishing!
      Do you spearfish much?

I used to go a lot but circumstances changed work/life etc so haven't been for 10 yrs plus. I still like to watch videos and keep up to date with things hence sub'ed to your channel. It makes me cringe when I see others pointing a loaded gun at mates or themselves just for selfies. Keep up the good work and looking forward to the next one.

Sorry to hear that man, I'm hoping to get the rib out and dive off the bill so that should be a future video, thanks for supporting my channel. Yeah some people do lack a bit of common sense sometimes.
